It's the end of 2023 and for this episode I have collected my 3 favourite pieces of advice from interviews I've done this year.To be honest, I had a HUGE selection to choose from and have left many good things out..but a top 3 isn't a top 6 so that was always going to happen.Listen to Danika Sanchez from "Baby Steps Concierge Nursing" talk about baby's sleep and how they should not really sleep through the night. Her full interview can be found hereThen we have Teresa Yang, a top dentist, explain to me why there should always only be 1 choice when it comes to buying a toothbrush (and boy was I wrong!)Teresa's interview can be found hereAnd finally, it's one of my favourite people in the health science space; Dr Heather Hausenblas talking about the importance of journaling.Dr Hausenblas' interview can be found hereLike I said, I could have picked many, I have had tremendous guests on this year but I had to whittle it down and these 3 bits of advice really stuck out.A HUGE "thank you" to all my listeners and guests and I'll be back in 2024.Just a reminder that HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles! So this means that you not only get 3 months FREE access, no obligation! What does the journey look like to evolve from an expert presenter to a sought-after speaker and thought leader? How can you escape what I call “the expert trap” and make the shift into thought leadership? My guest and Thought Leader Academy graduate, Teri DeLucca, PhD, has done exactly this. I know you'll be inspired by Teri! In this episode, Teri and I talk about: Why she started her business a few years ago Her initial reluctance to share personal stories and be vulnerable - and what changed her mind Her desire to escape “the expert trap” and go beyond her comfort zone of academic presentations The impact storytelling and vulnerability has had on her, her business, her customers, and her audiences Why she joined the Thought Leader Academy and what she got out of it The elements we've worked on together to create her signature talk, from incorporating humor and video clips to coming up with an acronym and planting sales seeds for her offer About My Guest: Dr. Teri DeLucca is the Founder and CEO of Impact Early Education, a professional development institute for the preschool industry. She completed a dual PhD in developmental psychology and educational psychology from the University of Florida where her research focused on the cognitive, social, and academic development of children. She previously worked as a research scientist for a children's early literacy intervention program and then accepted an applied position as Vice President of Operations for a system of preschools and extended day programs. Her work has been recognized by multiple awards including the Sigma Xi Women in Science Award, Academic Pediatric Association's Young Investigator Award, the Institute of Education Sciences Randomized Trials Award, and most recently she was recognized as one of the Top 40 Under 40 Business Leaders locally. Dr. DeLucca is a member of the John Maxwell Leadership Team and is a John Maxwell certified speaker. She is also a graduate and certified speaker through the Speaking Your Brand Thought Leader Academy. She enjoys serving the community both locally and abroad and her favorite volunteer endeavors are serving at a children's home in Guatemala for several years and serving with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. She has been matched with her “Little” sister Hannah for 18 years now! Heather joins me to talk about psychology being a big part of a healthy lifestyle. What we say to ourselves is important but also how we view ourselves in comparison to others (or our ideal version we have for ourselves) is a big piece of our health. Some key thoughts we need to consider when approaching a healthy lifestyle change:How well you know yourselfHow honest you are with where you are and where you need to beHow small changes in your diet/exercise are often better than massive changesWhat works for others might not work for usWe are human, we will make mistakes and it's ok, get back on track as soon as you canThe difference between food deserts and food swamps - what does your community look likeShe explains the importance of the work of Wellness Discover Labs validating the claims of some of the products on the market. In this episode, we provide tips for achieving an injury free and productive training cycle. Now that races are returning this fall, runners are eager to jump back into training. Before doing so, check out our tips to ensure a healthy, happy, and productive training cycle. Following our conversation, we welcomed, for second time to the show, Heather Hausenblas, PhD. Dr. Hausenblas, who was our guest on Episode 61 during which we discussed exercise addiction, is back on the show to discuss the believes we can ALL (even athletes) make small changes in our daily routines and behaviors to optimize our health. Dr. Hausenblas recently started a company called Healthy Moves Journaling, whose mission is to improve people’s health and wellness through science-based journaling. The first journal is to get people more active and it is based on the latest 24 hour movement guidelines. These guidelines state that all our movements each day count towards our health – not just the time we spend at the gym. The four “S’s” of daily movement – Standing, Stepping, Sweating, and Sleeping-- are the foundation for a healthy lifestyle, and even runners could use some improvement! The journal can be found online here: https://healthymovesjournaling.com/journals/. Dr. Hausenblas is a health psychology expert, award winning researcher, and author. Dr. Hausenblas is the co-author of six books, and she has published over 100 scientific journal articles related to health, sport, and wellness. She has been recognized for her research, and she has been the recipient of several awards including the Sport Science Award of the International Olympic Committee for her research on social determinants on physical activity. Dr. Hausenblas is an advocate for improving people’s health and she currently serves as the Vice-Chair for the Mayor’s Council on Fitness and Well-being for the City of Jacksonville and is a member of the Humana Bold Goal initiative, Movement for Change. She is a mom to three boys, and she enjoys exercising outdoors, spending time with her family and friends, and coaching and watching her sons play sports. It's been called “the universal panacea” - exercise has a positive effect on almost all health measures, and governments are actively campaigning for us to do more. But at the opposite end of the scale, the realisation that some people may be addicted to exercise is gaining traction. In this podcast we're joined by Heather Hausenblas - professor of kinesiology at Jacksonville University, James Smoliga - associate professor of physiology at highpoint University, and Katherine Schreiber - who's experienced exercise addiction, and written about her experience. They describe the condition, and what drives people to become addicted to exercise. They also outline the key indicators of the addiction, and what options there are for treatment.
