How do you make yourself live healthier, longer? At LIW we work with people on the factors that really matter for their healthspan. Among the core elements of your well-being is social connection and relationships. But, really, just how important are they? What kinds? Some argue that exercise is "the most potent longevity drug we have." Yes, there's pretty good evidence for that. But there's a strong argument to be made that if we exclusively focus on things like exercise, diet, sleep, even our purpose, we may overlook a factor that's even more influential long-term for us: connection to others. Rob Metcalfe's guiding principle is that leadership is not just an individual pastime; rather it needs to be embedded at all levels within and across organisations so those closest to the need can meet it in an aligned and autonomous way. This belief stems from his career in the military where alignment between Headquarters, Operations Rooms and the person on the ground is so vital, whether on conventional or alternate activities. The strength of this belief was forged in both peacetime activities and operational theatres that included the Falklands War and various roles in Northern Ireland.Since then, he has dedicated his career to enabling leadership at every level through consulting, facilitation, training and coaching. He encourages people to think and respond through the lens of self, others and the system, proactively and consciously choosing where their focus should be. This is achieved by creating clear goals alongside simple habits and routines that enable consistency between a person, team or organisation's inner and outer games. This experience includes 14 years as CEO of LIW, expanding the organisation from start up to global leadership consultancy, preceded by 14 years as an officer in the Royal Marines Commandos. More recently he spent 3 years as a Partner with Denali Venture Partners and he now operates as an associate and investor to his previous organisations, as well as an independent consultant to a small number of other purposeful organisations across sectors and throughout the world. He is motivated by organisations that have a positive impact and has recently concentrated on working with the UN World Food Program across Africa and the Middle East including working with leadership teams and operational leaders in Yemen, Iraq, Sudan, Syria and Somalia. He also works with the Kids Cancer Project in Australia who are dedicated to saving childrens' lives though investment in cancer research.Rob and his team held the world building abseil record in 1992 for scaling to, and abseiling from, the upper deck of the CN Tower in Toronto, alongside a team from the Canadian School of Rescue Training. He was also “Mentioned in Dispatches” during his service, acknowledging that this was due to the efforts of the leaders and the people he had the good fortune to command.Rob sees how neuroscience is proving what was previously only a belief about good leadership practice. Many of his top tips are based on this truth. His top tip for your reflection is to “do whatever you want but know what you are doing”. He picked this quote up from someone else and has since observed that it is often not the case! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Effective dialogue is the one thing getting in the way of senior teams. Listening is a fundamental part of team communication, and it begins with curiosity. Without it, leadership can be a lonely pursuit with less diversity of thought. Before heading up design and research at LIW, Andy Chevis was an HR director and a salesperson, and has taken his curiosity in how we communicate effectively through his career. In this episode, he shares some of the common – and very human – pitfalls we all fall prey to, and how we can bridge those gaps to hold space for fresh ideas.Takeaways from Dan and Pia Curiosity has a place at all levels in the System Team Self model.
The title of the show has officially changed...again... Sorry about that. This title is just so much better and fitting with Phoenix's personality. In this, he talks about the title change, upcoming LIW projects including a new scripted sci-fi podcast and books, going to 98 KUPD's Battle Of The Bands and seeing a member of Goth Brooks applying make-up in the bathroom of Copper Blues, going to a man's house for an obscene amount of Christmas lights, the differences between serial killers and murderes and finally how weird Carrie Fisher's death must be for all the nerds that masturbated to her as teenagers. Phoenix then reveals weird feelings from childhood about being attracted to Natalie Portman in Leon: The Professional and then watching the movie as an adult. It gets weird. But not illegal because it's all a bit. Seriously. Check out that Goth Brooks song played on the show here: Let them know we sent you! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6i51bbQU_U
We were joined by author/comedian Patrick Tracy who is plugging his new book GEAR'D, a sci-fi series that releases weekly, every Tuesday on Amazon. Phoenix talks about going to the Bulls Vs. Suns game and having to ignore a fight behind him so he could watch a game, his lack of Lego brand toys as a kid, Patrick reads a letter he sent to a book publisher that wasn't favorable, Brent reads news that involves animal cruelty, Psy's new song Daddy and a ton of random shit. Seriously, go get the book, it's a quick read and worthwhile. Go get your free copy of the book here: http://www.amazon.com/Geard-Rust-Dust-Patrick-Tracy-ebook/dp/B0182YIGTC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449021099&sr=8-1&keywords=gear%27d www.loiteringinwonderland.com Check out the other shows on the LIW network on iTunes, YouTube and Stitcher! 1. This is the angriest episode of The Phoenix West Show! to date. It starts off with such joy too because Phoenix is 2 1/2 hours away from finally owning Fallout 4. He talks about his disgust with breaking down to buy an X-Box One, his anger all systems only come with one controller nowadays, he bought a Ghostbusters Ecto-1A plastic model set that intimidates him to no end and probably won't ever be finished, how him and Bri spent an hour and a half watching videos of people falling down and hurting themselves, how he really hopes a man that repeatedly head butted his car window is dead, he goes to great lengths to describe how he hopes they all died, then he talks about how much he hates the woman that recorded her own drunk driving on Periscope before going into how much he hates everyone at concerts that hold their phones over their heads to record videos they won't watch of a concert they already missed despite being there. People suck. www.loiteringinwonderland.com Check out the other shows on the LIW network on iTunes, YouTube and Stitcher! 1. In this episode, Phoenix explains the sound at the beginning of the show's theme song, the awkwardness of going to a Halloween party at a random church, the worst conversation in the world is when you tell someone you're a comedian and they ask you to tell them a joke, his Halloween costume, drinking beer while walking around during actual Halloween, and a quick LASIK update. www.loiteringinwonderland.com Check out the other shows on the LIW network on iTunes, YouTube and Stitcher! 1. In this episode, Phoenix talks about his experience with an Arizona pumpkin patch, the differences between city pumpkin patches and the one he grew up with, how he believed Randy Quaid was hiding out on that particular pumpkin patch, how he might suck a dick or two if they dispense pumpkin spice lattes. He also does an update on his Lasik before talking about Back To The Future II day. He framed the newspaper. It's sad, really. www.loiteringinwonderland.com Check out the other shows on the LIW network on iTunes, YouTube and Stitcher! 1. Phoenix got LASIK this week and was bombarded with quotations about it. Instead of just reading you information and actual facts on the subject, he decided to just share his experience with the ENTIRE process. Lasers are assholes and shouldn't be feared. Secretaries are bitches. The title of this episode isn't serious so don't think it's a reflection of anything that actually happened. In this episode, Phoenix discusses his recent trip to Out Of Africa, a zoo north of the city of Phoenix. He saw lions and tigers and bears...no. Not doing it. He did a zipline ride and fucked it up pretty badly. He also saw a show where the performers pretended to be attacked by tigers. They were real dicks. All of it worked because Phoenix kept forgetting that he wasn't really in Africa. www.loiteringinwonderland.com Check out the other shows on the LIW network on iTunes, YouTube and Stitcher! 1. In this episode, Phoenix explains all the shows that are coming to LIW studios. (See below for details) Then he finishes the episode with explaining how the trip to Vegas went over the weekend. His hatred for Siri in the city, his confusion with mixing burlesque and zombies, his hatred for parking garages, his confusion for directions with the lack of signs in the hotel/casino/malls, his hatred for screaming theater during Evil Dead: The Musical 4D Experience, his confusion for the proper pronunciation of the word Adidas, his hatred for homeless men vomiting on the sidewalk in broad daylight. It was a glorious mess all around. www.loiteringinwonderland.com Check out the other shows on the LIW network on iTunes, YouTube and Stitcher! 1.
