Send us a textJosh Dech wasn't long into his career as a paramedic when he realized that he was working in “sick care” instead of health care. His patients weren't getting better; in fact, they were getting worse. After driving the same people to the hospital repeatedly, and watching most of them get sicker or die, he left Paramedics and went into personal training. After working with hundreds of clients, he realized that the common denominator for his clients' health issues, including skin issues, brittle hair, hormones, weight loss resistance, etc., was related to nutrition, gut health and stress. Josh went back to school and became a Holistic Nutritionist and specialized in gut health. He had numerous clients who were getting relief, but he quickly realized the extent of digestive issues with his clients who were living confined to their houses, with up to 50 bowel movements a day, crippling pain and brain fog, who were afraid to leave their house for fear of having accidents. His love for this field of health care came from watching adults get their lives back. Most doctors believe gut diseases are forever.Josh wants to prove them wrong. Find Josh at-IG- @joshdech.healthTW- @gutsolutionhttps://gutsolution.ca/Josh's Awesome Podcasts!- https://gutsolution.ca/podcastHow It's Made: Canola Oil. Hey Girl!   Nutrition and Exercise go hand in hand, and having my Bachelors in Nutrition, I definitely address diet with all my patients and have talked about various nutrition concepts on this show. Yet, even sometimes I worry if my awareness and knowledge around food has caused some sort of eating disorder or almost obsessive relationship with food and what my kids and I are eating. And with all the confusion out there on the internet and social media, it can become very overwhelming to know how much food/calories and what types of foods are truly the best for your overall health.  It is definitely individualized and meal planning should not be a one size fits all approach.   That is why I am SO excited to have Registered Dietitian and fellow 505 podcaster, Jessika Brown on today's show! Aside from also being from New Mexico and having graduated UNM's Nutrition program a couple years earlier than me, Jessika has been helping women relearn their relationship with food through value- based goals, using biofeedback and evidence based nutrition. She has a private practice coaching women as well as her own podcast, The Fuel Her Awesome Show (linked below). She dives into so many great insights as well as some practical tips that will help you identify if you have a healthy relationship with food or not, how to start rebalancing your hormones through your gut and helping to overall improve gut and microbiome health. I personally love her approach as it is very similar to intuitive eating, but has a much more individualized and science based framework!   We know things like IBS, Chrons, anorexia, binge-eating and other eating/gut disorders are linked to pelvic floor pain and dysfunction so make sure you listen to this weeks episode as it will have lots of great insights in there for you to start healing your relationship with food, your gut and therefore, your pelvic floor!       As always, if you are experiencing any pelvic floor/women's health issue like urinary incontinence/leaking, pelvic pain, pain with sex, urgency, heaviness/prolapse or any other back/hip/joint pain let's get you booked for a virtual coaching session or in person physical therapy session for a more individualized plan and one-on-one instructions so you can feel confident in your body and start healing today!!    Make Sure to reach out to> PTDes@balancedmomtality.com  AND/OR Join my FREE Facebook community for ACCOUNTABILITY and a safe and supportive place to share and support each other!> https://www.facebook.com/groups/1696216757461633/    Join my VIP Insider group and receive my Newsletter full of great tips and tricks and upcoming resources! > https://newsletter.balancedmomtality.com/   Follow and get tips/tricks on:  Facebook> @thebalancedmomtality Instagram> @the_balanced_momtality Learn > www.balancedmomtality.com   Jessika Brown Follow Up Information: Fuel Her Awesome Podcast- https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fuel-her-awesome-food-freedom-intuitive-eating-empowered/id1547179580  Website: https://www.jessbrownrd.com/  Instagram: @Jessbrownrd

If you've been around here long, you've heard of BPC-157. This powerful peptide has drummed up many questions, and today's episode dives into the answers!    In this bonus episode of Biohacking Superhuman Performance, I discuss BPC157 - the multipurpose peptide. BPC-157 has benefits for gut health, tissue regeneration, and a balanced immune and inflammatory response as well as supporting a myriad of other body systems. I dive into the basics of the peptide, where to get it, how to take it, as well as what animal and human research has shown for this popular supplement.    Overall, this episode gives guidance on the healing properties of BPC-157 and who it's best for.    To learn more about peptides, and where to get them, check out my “Nat Recommends” page on my website. It has all things peptides! https://www.natniddam.com/nat-recommends-peptides  Thank you to our sponsors for making this episode possible:   Berkeley Life: Consumers may register and place an order using my code NIDDBL for 10% off at berkeleylife.com   Peptide Info:  Peptides Nat Recommends: https://www.natniddam.com/nat-recommends-peptides  LVLupHealth (ships worldwide): Use Code NAT10 Healthgevity: http://healthgevity.com/Nat Use Code LONGEVITY  LELabs Use Code NAT20 Find more from Nathalie: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmholC48MqRC50UffIZOMOQ Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/biohackingsuperhumanperformance Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nathalieniddam/ Website: NatNiddam.com Join Nat's Membership Community: https://www.natniddam.com/bsp-community   Work with Nat: Book Your 20 Minute Optimization Consult: https://calendly.com/nniddam/intro-call?month=2021-08   What We Discuss:  (2:14) The Basics of BPC157 (4:11) The popularity and applications of BPC157 (11:09) Scenarios to use BPC157  (14:24) Wound healing (17:00) pain relief (19:20) BPC157 is neuroprotective (21:30) Who benefits the most? (24:24) Available forms of BPC157  (37:00) Got more questions?  Key Takeaways: BPC157 is shown in research to have huge healing implications on the GI tract. It originates in the GI tract. It's a compound that can help repair any damage done to the lining of the digestive system, from wounds in the mouth to ulcers in the stomach. It's been used in research to try and heal diseases like Chrons.  It also can repair skeletal muscles, joints, tendons, and ligaments. Tendons and ligaments get really poor blood supply, so it's very hard to heal that area. BPC157 drives angiogenesis. It can drive new blood vessels to the area to help heal the injury.  BPC157 can be used as an injectable or taken orally. When taken orally, it does wonders for gut health. It can help other issues when taken orally, but it's not as potent as an injectable.

Osteoporosis is often a condition reserved for older people, specifically women. But did you know that it affects young people as well as men? Protecting bone health can start at a young age if we continue to discuss the importance of it as Kevin Ellis and I do in this episode of Biohacking Superhuman Performance.    In this conversation with guest Kevin Ellis, the Bone Coach, we explore the world of bone health and bone disease. Osteoporosis is affecting more and more people at younger ages due to the sedentary lives with low-nutrient diets that society leads.    We dive into the standard recommendations that follow an osteoporosis diagnosis, as well as the medications, side effects, and long-term results of these procedures. Most medications require even more follow-up medications, so knowing what you're getting into is important when selecting the route you want to take. Natural bone restoration is an option for those who don't want to blindly follow the medication route.    Overall, this conversation offers guidance on exercise, nutrition, and gut health procedures for building and maintaining quality bone tissue for longevity.    Kevin Ellis is an Integrative Nutrition Certified Health Coach, osteoporosis "thriver," and founder of BoneCoach™. He has made it his mission to help over a million people around the globe address bone loss, build bone strength, stop fearing fractures, and lead active lives. He's most famous for helping people with osteopenia and osteoporosis gain clarity and confidence that improvement is possible.   Thank you to our sponsors for making this episode possible:   BodyBio: Visit BodyBio.com today and get 15% on your first order when you use code Nathalie Sensate: Use code NAT at www.getsensate.com/Nat Inside Tracker: Use code NIDDAM20 for 20% off at InsideTracker.com/NIDDAM20 Find more from Kevin Ellis Website: https://bonecoach.com/  Podcast: The Bone Coach Podcast  Instagram: @bonecoachkevin Stronger Bones Masterclass: https://bonecoach.com/stronger-bones-masterclass    Find more from Nathalie: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmholC48MqRC50UffIZOMOQ Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/biohackingsuperhumanperformance Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nathalieniddam/ Website: NatNiddam.com Join Nat's Membership Community: https://www.natniddam.com/bsp-community   Work with Nat: Book Your 20 Minute Optimization Consult: https://calendly.com/nniddam/intro-call?month=2021-08   What We Discuss:  (0:50) The start of Bone Coach (2:20) Osteoporosis isn't just in old people or women (3:20) How PPIs play into long-term issues (5:33) The difference between osteoporosis and osteopenia.  (9:20) Dairy isn't the only solution for bone health.  (12:20) The issues with the standard treatment recommendation for an osteoporosis diagnosis.  (15:00) Quality bone is just as important as bone density (18:50) Important nutrients for your skeleton (20:15) What you have to know before taking medication  (26:25) A natural approach to healing bone loss (46:44) The Bone Coach Program  (48:17) Stress, sleep, and bone health (50:00) You need K2! Not just magnesium, calcium, and D3.  (52:30) Find more from Bone Coach Key Takeaways:   Decade-long use of PPIs is highly damaging. It reduces stomach acid, but you need stomach acid to break down food in order to absorb important nutrients like amino acids, B12, and more. If PPIs are taken at all, it should be for just a short while.  Osteoporosis means porous bones. It's not enough bone formation or excessive bone loss. Bone quality and density are reduced. Osteopenia is a precursor to osteoporosis - it just means low bone mass. Most people aren't getting scanned until later in life, or towards menopause. Peak bone mass happens near 30 years old. Getting a bone density scan around that time frame can help you monitor changes over time.  A sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and a low-nutrient diet can cause bone loss. You can naturally build bone without medication. The most important foundations for bone health are diet, gut health, and exercise. Without a healthy gut, we cannot absorb the nutrients that we need to build bones. People with gut diseases like Celiac or Chrons need to have bone scans often. Protein is highly important along with calcium. For exercise, walking is not enough to build bones. You need muscle pulling on bone and impact. A mix of weight bearing exercises (walking, yoga, gardening, pickleball, hiking) non-weight bearing exercises (long-distance cycling and swimming) and muscle strengthening exercises (barbell, dumbbell, machine work, squats, deadlifts, squats in the 5-10 rep range) are all needed to build quality bone as well as dense and flexible bone.

Brett Ender is the co-host of The Meat Mafia Podcast, one of my favorite podcasts to listen to, which addresses fundamental problems in our food and healthcare system. His principles are simple: eat real foods, buy locally, and cook your own meals. Brett is an advocate of carnivore & animal-based forms of eating. Brett Ender embarked on a healing journey in 2016 that would see him hospitalized from debilitating ulcerative colitis and taking a $65,000 drug once every 6-8 weeks. He eventually changed his approach and evolved to having zero signs of inflammation or microinflammation. This was due to Brett adopting an animal-based died. Brett ended up going full carnivore and within 2 weeks and saw a complete abatement of symptoms. His story led him into a deep exploration of health and nutrition, food systems, and regenerative agriculture. Today, he is half of the Meat Mafia duo, alongside his friend Harry Gray, where they explore nutrition and food with guests on their podcast. I hear a lot of talk on coffee. Mainly about sleep cycles and blocking adenosine. And then the usual worship of loving coffee. I have a stressful job and I find that giving up coffee does wonders for anger management, stress, burnout, and all around negative feelings. I do occasionally use it when I have a morning of zero motivation as I think it increases cortisol. I usually stick to gunpowder green tea, it doesn't take me to dark places. I wonder how many people have kept drinking 5 cups a day and then got on Lexapro or something like that without taking stock of the situation. Should there be more talk around the negative aspects of coffee on mental health?   Chron's Hi Robb & Nicki, I can't tell you how much I appreciate the work you have done over the years.  I'll jump to the punchline that last year (at the age of 54) I was diagnosed with Chron's.  The Chron's is under control with biologics infusion and I'm just trying to get back to health and fitness and I was wondering if you had nutrition recommendations in living with Chron's.  Are there resources you recommend? I live in Vancouver Canada, 55 years old (6ft, 215lbs) have been reasonably athletic in my life, playing football, hockey, lacrosse, boxing into my mid 20's and then got into running, then with young kids took a break from fitness and then got into road cycling, started playing lacrosse again and finally got into powerlifting 10 years ago.  I've been doing keto off and on since 2016 and bone broth fasting.  I've never been sick then the wheels fell off last year when I got sick and was diagnosed with Chron's.  The Chron's is under control with medication and I've resumed powerlifting and road cycling (I have a 100 mile bike race in July).  Apologies for the long message and thanks again for the years of great information you provide.  With kindest regards, Fred   Seed Oils Mae writes: Hi Robb and Nikki, I love your guys podcast-it's always the highlight of my week to listen. You both have such a balanced view on health issues I wanted to ask about seed oils. I know they are not good for us in large amounts (or am I wrong about that?) but what about small amounts here and there? Like if we go out to eat a couple times a month or have a few tortilla chips here and there? Is that still super damaging to health? I see so many health influencers talking about how bad seed oils are and how we shouldn't touch the things with a ten foot pole. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:    Ciro: Hi Dr. Cabral.Thank you for all the knowledge that you share.I have a question about weight training. I'm a 45 years old male; weight 194 lbs. and 5ft 11. I have a fairly robust looking body/torso with good muscle percentage in general, but my arms look very lean in comparison to the rest of my body. My biceps get toned fairly easily but my triceps just won't get toned. I don't take any supplements with regards to muscle gain, but I do weight training (using YBELL training or CrossFit inspired exercises) 2 times a week and soccer once a week. I go to a gym now but have the YBELL's at home as well. What would you recommend I look into? Which specific exercises do you recommend me doing so the arms will be more toned and specifically the triceps and shoulders?   Julia: Hi Dr. Cabral! I was wondering what your thoughts are on young livings Ningxia Red. They claim that “antioxidant drink is clinically shown to increase physical energy levels, improve sleep patterns, and reduce daily stress. It's packed with powerful antioxidants to help against oxidative stress, support normal cellular function, and promote healthy energy levels.” Some people I know swear by it and drink it daily and it anted to know if it's a good product. I searched the archive and couldn't find anything on it. Maybe you can do a product review? Thanks!   Natalia: Hi Stephen - I've been listening to your podcasts for a couple months now and they have helped me so much and I'm implementing things as I go. I feel fantastic so far on a 14 hour fast etc, but I would love to know how I can help my partner who has Chrons - he had the bag for a year, he had the surgery - the bag was removed - but they anticipate he will have more surgery - I would love to avoid that - his diet recommendations are so different to what I know as ‘right' for most people his diet recommended white bread, white rice, no vege skins etc. would you recommend he do a full lab test? He works hard all day - but he gets tired - I would just love to help go feel as energetic as I feel now - pls direct me to how I can help him - thanks   Samantha: Hello, I listen to the podcast all the time and it has helped me so much. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us. My question is I have been told to stop taking DIM if I'm taking HRT. I only use the oestrogen gel as I have a Mirena coil fitted for progesterone. Please can you tell me if this is correct? Also please can you comment on hearing aids with blue tooth are they safe? Much appreciated. Samantha   Anonymous: Thank you for all you do! I've done a lot of work on my health (multiple DCD, CBO, HMD, take daily supplements, etc.). One thing I'm working on is getting into the parasympathetic more and lowering my slightly elevated heart rate. I've listened to podcasts on this subject and your interview with Patrick McKeown on how important breathing is. It seems every time I focus on my breath I feel more stressed. I've tried different breathing techniques, yoga and I make sure I'm not over oxygenating. It just seems to raise my heart rate and I haven't seen the relaxing benefits. Even when I try not to manipulate my breath and just move my focus to it, I feel the stress response. Any suggestions? Faith Is A GiftMark 11:22-24 “ And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God.  Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.  Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you receive it, and you will.”I love this verse.  I love it and it is confusing to me at the same time.  I love it because it shows how powerful our faith can be.  It is confusing because I can't imagine having the faith to tell a mountain to be taken up and cast into the sea.  Do you have passages like this in the Bible?  Verses you really like and at the same time you aren't sure what they mean or how to interpret them?  Or maybe you really like them and you think they are true for other people but they are not true for you?  I think today may be one of those days where we talk about the verse and yet you might be left with more questions than answers.  We are on this journey together and I don't have all the answers.  I am learning right along side you.  I love to imagine what it would be like if I commanded a mountain to get up and through itself in the sea. Even though I can picture it in my mind, I don't actually believe that I could do that.  It feels way to big and too out there.  A whole mountain, throwing itself into the sea, that seems a bit far fetched.  I know God can do anything.  I don't doubt that God could cast a mountain in to the sea, I doubt that I could, even if I believed.  It seems to always come down to that.  I believe God could do anything, but I don't necessarily believe He would use me to do it.  Do you feel this way too?  Yes, maybe God does want to heal people today, but not through me.  I am not good enough for the that, I am not holy enough, I am not Catholic enough, Christian enough, strong enough, you get the picture.  I am not enough for God to use in that way.Man, what a number the enemy plays on us.  He just whispers these stupid lies into our head and we don't know any better and we buy them and believe him.  Well, actually, they aren't complete lies, which is where he gets us.   Yes, we are not enough on our own to have God work through us.  We aren't worthy on our own, God makes us worthy because He created us in His likeness and image and because we have the Holy spirit inside of us.  God wants to use us, even in our brokenness and the enemy knows this.  This is why Satan left heaven.  He knew from the beginning of time that God was going to make humans and that we were going to mess up and yet God was going to love us anyway.  That was too much for Satan's pride.  This is probably why Satan attacks us in this way so frequently.  He is constantly trying to tell us that we are not enough and we don't live up to God's standards.  However, it is not God's standards he is wanting us to live up to, it's his own.  He is projecting his feeling onto us.  He doesn't feel we are worthy.  God says otherwise!I know it is possible to get to a point where you know God wants to use you for something.  You might not know what but you know He wants to use you or He is using you.  You no longer question if you are good enough for Him to use.  You still might not understand it, as we don't see ourselves through God's eyes.  We usually see ourselves through the lens of this world and that is not always kind.  However, you start to see fruit in your life and you know God is using you.  This is when this verse can get tricky, or at least it did for me.  When you are convinced that God can't or won't use you, you don't worry about this verse because you don't think you will ever have that type of faith so the verse isn't relevant to you.  What about when you do believe God is using you?  What about when you do feel you have the faith of a mustard seed?  What about when you feel you believe God is healing in this world and even believe He can use you to do it?  When you believe all of that and then you read this passage you can get discouraged.  Yes, I believe God can heal through me, but do I believe I can cast a mountain into the sea, not really.  I don't think this verse is about mountains though.  I think God is just letting us know that faith is powerful and whatever we say, if we do not doubt in our heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.  Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you receive it, and you will.”I think many of us struggle with this verse because we do have faith.  Many of us have seen miracles, and if we have't seen our own miracles, we believe the ones we read about in scriptures or we hear about on line or on TV.  We know God can do miracles.  We believe, and yet we don't always get what we ask for.  We feel there is not doubt in our heat and yet the healing we desperately wanted for our loved one did not come to pass.  What do we do now?  How do we reconcile with this verse as we know all that is written in the Bible is truth and yet this verse says if we believe with no doubt in our heart it will come to pass?  This is where the enemy can come in and start whispering half truths again.  See, God doesn't really do the things you want Him to do.  See, you aren't good enough for God to heal your loved one.  See, you don't have the faith you thought you had.  Why couldn't you just have more faith?  It is your fault this person died.  The enemy loves to make us feel bad.Have you ever had these thoughts?  Have you ever wondered about this verse?  Have you ever brought this verse to God and asked Him what it means?  The last line in this verse says, “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you receive it, and you will.”  I get stuck on this one a lot.  I take this one to God a lot.  I had a friend, a prayer group member, and her name was Iris. Iris was young, kind, so full of life.  I joined prayer group in 2018 and Iris got throat cancer in 2020.  At this point I had been reading all the healing books I could for a year or two now.  I had seen some success when I had prayed over people for healing.  I truly believed that God would heal Iris.  I believed that God would use me to heal her completely and that she would be back to prayer group in no time. In August of that same year, Iris went home to be with the Lord.  I was so confused and honestly, angry.  I asked God why He didn't heal her.  I asked why He tells us that whatever we pray for in faith we will get and then He took my friend.  I blamed myself.  Have you done that before?  Have you prayed for a healing or for a loved one to get better and then when they didn't you blamed yourself for not having enough faith.  I think this happens more often than we would like to admit.  I also think sometimes other people may make us feel this way.  Well, Jesus said if you have faith it will happen so maybe you just didn't have enough faith.  Honestly, I really struggle with understanding this passage and other ones like it.  I truly believe God can do anything, I know He can.  There is no doubt in my heart.  But then even as I say that the Holy Spirit brings up some pretty severe illnesses and I don't doubt that God can do it, but sometimes I guess I doubt that He will do it.  For instance chronic illnesses like Chrons disease.  I know God can heal it, I honestly do. However, it is hard for me to picture Him doing it, if that makes sense.  I feel I did not have any doubt that Iris would be healed and so I was confused when she passed away. I wondered if it was my fault.  If she died because I didn't have enough faith.  If I could have saved her if I just had more faith.  I know I am not alone with going down this line of thinking.  Although I don't have any answers and I still struggle to understand verses like this at times, God gave me two pieces of insight during my prayer time that were very helpful.First, He did actually answer my prayers because Iris is healed now.  There is no sickness in heaven.  Iris is no longer suffering.  She can eat food, swallow, and can talk again.  I am sure she is up there singing with the angels right now.  Second, God told me I can not manufacture trust.  Trust is a gift and it is a fruit of the Holy Spirit.  I can't will myself to have no doubt in my heart.  God gives us faith.  There are things that build our faith, such as reading the Bible, learning about God and all He has done, and hearing about miracles that others have seen as well.  If our loved ones, or anyone we pray over is not healed God does not want us to blame ourselves.  God is the one responsible for healing people and He is also the one responsible for making our prayers fruitful.  God has a plan and it is our job to following His promptings.  It is our job to pray over someone if we feel called to do so.  It is our job to step out in faith and say the prayer and then leave the outcome of the prayer to God.  Hopefully you understand this verse a bit better.  As I said at the beginning of the episode, I am learning right along side you and have struggled with this verse.  My prayer is that I did not leave you with more questions than answers and that if you do have questions you seek the answers.  God is a mystery and we will not understand everything about Him while we are here on Earth.  And yet, we can seek to learn as much as we can.  If you only take one thing away from this episode I pray it is the reassurance that you are not responsible for the outcome of your healing prayers.  You couldn't have saved your loved ones by conjuring up more faith on your own.  Faith is a gift from God.  Dear Heavenly Father I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today.  Lord, we ask that you impart your wisdom about this verse on us.  Help us to understand what this verse means.  Help us to fight off the enemy when he is trying to tell us our loved one death is our fault.  Help us to ignore His lies and replace them with the truth.  Fill our hearts and minds with the truth Lord.  Fill our hearts and minds with your love, your peace, your grace.  We love you Lord, you are amazing!  We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus holy name, Amen!Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus.  I look forward to meeting you hear again on Monday.  Remember Jesus loves you, and so do I!  Have a blessed day!

Chronscast - The Fantasy, Science Fiction & Horror Podcast

We're joined today by Tade Thompson, the multi award-winning author of such books as Rosewater, Making Wolf, Far From the Light of Heaven, and the Molly Southbourne novellas. He is also a self-confessed comics junkie, which he proved when he joined us last year to delve into the great WATCHMEN. This year Tade talks with us about Sandman, arguably Neil Gaiman's greatest piece of work, and another example of the comic book medium bursting free from its pulpy roots and demonstrating that it can stand up as art and literature. Sandman's mantelpiece, groaning under the weight of a World Fantasy Award (the only comic to have achieved this), a Bram Stoker Award, and no fewer than 26 Eisner awards, attests to this. The recent and long-awaited Netflix adaptation of Sandman starring Tom Sturridge has also been a worldwide success.Be warned! This show comes with huge spoilers not just for the first couple of volumes of Sandman, which have been adapted by Netflix, but for the whole comic book series, and we will be discussing the final ending. You have been advised! We talk about the psychoanalytic and mythological structures that form the foundation of Sandman, and particularly the characters of Dream and his siblings. We discuss our capacity as humans to use our dreams to simulate strategies in the waking world, and why dreams rub up against desires. Tade walks us through the history of the Sandman IP, and we pontificate on whether a piece of work such as this can be fully formed in the mind of the author, or whether it was discovered as Gaiman progressed through the telling. We also discuss horror more generally, reflecting some recent conversations on the Chrons boards, and how to best define that slippery genre. In particular we talk about Tade's most recent novella Jackdaw, a magnificent exploration into obsession, art, the creative act, and its relationship to science.Elsewhere The Judge wraps up the topic of plagiarism, with some advice to authors on how we can protect ourselves against copyright infringement, or having your work stolen. Important stuff for all writers, so take note. Our winner from January's 75-word challenge is Ashleyne and, staying with our topic of dreams, we see what happens when Captain Halkmilkcarton from Mars Radio 14 attempts to stay awake for three weeks straight.Listener Poll Lastly, please fill out our very short poll, which is going to inform some future content we're bringing to the show.Next Month Next month we'll be joined by none other than Bryan Wigmore, author of the Fire Stealers series, including The Goddess Project and The Empyreus Proof, to talk about John Boorman's 1981 cinematic take on the Arthurian myth, Excalibur. Intro  (0:00) This week we are doing something a little different! Love to read books and I Love health and wellness, so I love anything that can give us as much information as possible about our bodies and lives! We have all gone through something that has led us into an Ostomy and we are looking to live it the best we know-how. So how can we help ourselves be better and healthier and help others to do the same? The podcast is all about a book I have been reading. Life Force By Tony Robbins How new breakthroughs in precision medicine can transform the quality of your life and those you love. We are going to talk about the first half of the book and I will do another podcast for the 2nd half of the book. Written by Tony AND an advisory board. Diving Into The Book (3:34) Starts by talking about our GREATEST GIFT. And our greatest gift is our bodies! We have to be our own advocates for our bodies if we think something is not right without our bodies. We have to sit back and listen to our bodies. Doctors only know as much as they know. Meditation Exercise Going for walks Sitting with things Acupuncture Massage therapy   Lifestyle And Diet Chapter 12 (27:51) Our bodies need movement. We need to heal ourselves and take care of ourselves so we need to move. When it comes to longevity and diet, they talk about how they found people who adopted a healthy lifestyle, had an 82% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. And a 65% lower risk of dying from cancer.  This should say it all! HEALTHY LIFESTYLE! What does a healthy lifestyle mean? It means eating well and feeling great.  It means eating the right things for our bodies. There is a test you can do called the Geno Palate DNA test.  Tests you and tells you do you burn carbs better than fats, what should your protein goals be? What should your carb goals be on a daily basis?  What are the best foods for you?  Gets very specific.  Tells you the top vegetables for you based on your DNA Find out what vegetables, fruits, meats your body really thrives for and loves.  Diets high in protein without accompanied vegetables and fruits are at higher risk for certain cancers and heart disease. Replace bad carbs with good carbs.  Get the right amounts of fruits and vegetables. Certain veggies, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and brussels sprouts; these veggies contain Sulforaphane. The group that ate high levels of protein also had a 74% increase in their risk of dying from any cause. What really mattered in the study that I'm reading you was whether the protein they ate came from plants, or from animals.  The study found that in people aged 50 to 65, plant-based proteins were healthy, whereas high levels of animal proteins promoted mortality. Fasting and the power of fasting.  Fasting can be a 12 hour fast while we sleep.  Eat dinner and eat breakfast 12-14 hours later. Drink your water. Mayo Collaborative is a for-profit diagnostics laboratory affiliated with the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. In 2004, they began to sell diagnostic kits using an identical method to the one patented by Prometheus. Prometheus sued Mayo and the case made it to the Supreme Court–twice. Finally, in 2012, the Supreme Court held that Prometheus's method was unpatentable from the outset because it was akin to an unpatentable "law of nature." Gut Health? What Improves it & What Destroys it – Dr. Jason Jones Elizabeth City, NC, Chiropractor The health of your gut has a huge impact on your body and it goes a long way in determining your overall health. The trillions of bacteria present in the digestive tract make up the gut microbiome (made up of good and bad bacteria, yeast, fungus molds, etc). And they help in digestion and contribute to the health of our entire body, including our brains, immune system and more. Below are some ways your gut health impacts your overall health: The immune system The bacteria in the gut microbiome play a fundamental role in protecting us against infections. The beauty is that our immune system which detects and destroys pathogens does not attack the bacteria in the gut microbiome. Instead, it works in a mutually beneficial partnership and helps to maintain the symbiotic relationship of the host with these microbes. That’s more reason why the bacteria in our gut have a large influence on our susceptibility to immune-related diseases.  So when we eat foods that can be disruptive to our health our gut works as our first line of defense. Digestive health Many good bacteria in our gut help with digestion, nutrient absorption, and even more functions. But when there is a disruption in the balance of gut bacteria, this can often lead to various gastrointestinal problems, including Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diverticulitis and other inflammatory bowel diseases. Brain health You might have noticed a sick feeling in your stomach whenever you hear bad news or you’re in a stressful situation. That’s because the gut has a strong connection with the brain.  In fact, there is a constant flow of signals between the brain and the gut via the enteroendocrine cells located in the lining of the gut. So any problem with your gut health can contribute to depression, anxiety, or stress. Research has shown that the gut also has an impact on mood and behavior. Heart health When you hear the saying, “the road to a man’s heart is through his stomach,” it means something more. There’s actually a link between the gut and the heart. Part of the chemicals produced by the microbes ends up in our bloodstream and moves throughout the body. One good example is trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), which has been shown by studies to potentially cause blockage in the arteries and increase the risk of heart disease. However, another study showed that gut microbiome helps to increase the level of triglycerides and HDL cholesterol (the good kind). Weight gain, Obesity, and Diabetes The bacteria in the gut microbiome also play a role in the body’s metabolism. In fact, research has shown that an imbalance in gut bacteria levels could lead to an increased risk of obesity and diabetes. Studies are still ongoing into how the signals from the gut influence metabolism and contribute to conditions like Type 2 diabetes. What destroys your gut health? These gut busters are destroying reducing the number of good bacteria in your gut: Heating and eating hot fermented foods, such as sauerkraut or kimchi (eat them cold) Eating foods containing artificial sweeteners and refined sugars Eating high-sugar diets Eating processed foods containing additives Indiscriminate use of antibiotics How to improve it You can improve your gut health to maintain the right balance of the bacteria in your digestive tract. Here are some simple measures to follow: Load up on fresh fruits, veggies, and beans, and eat more whole grains and nuts. Brush and floss your teeth regularly Limit sugars and artificial sweeteners Keep fermented foods like kimchi refrigerated below 1150F Eat prebiotic fiber like bananas, garlic, asparagus, and chicory Avoid indiscriminate use of antibiotics Reduce stress Exercise regularly Get enough sleep You can consult Dr. Jason Jones at our Chiropractic office at Elizabeth City, NC to learn more about how to improve your gut health naturally to enhance your overall health and wellbeing.

Improving Gut function TOP to BOTTOM - Organs Involved & Gut-brain connection- Dr. Jason Jones Elizabeth City NC, Chiropractor The food we eat moves through the gastrointestinal tract (a long, connected, hollow tube that starts from the mouth and ends in the anus), and there are lots of organs involved in this process. Along the way, the body absorbs the beneficial part of the food after digestion, giving your nutrients and energy. The remaining part is given out as a waste product. A series of muscles work together to coordinate the moment of food and cells that produce enzymes and hormones involved in the process of digestion. Other “accessory” organs, including the liver, gallbladder, and the pancreas also involved in this process. What organs are involved in the process of digestion? The major organs that are part of the digestive system includes: Mouth Esophagus Stomach small intestine large intestine rectum   These organs work hand-in-hand to convert foods into nutrients and energy that is needed for survival. In the end, it packages the solid waste or stool and gets rid of them through the bowel movement. Mouth This is the starting part of the gastrointestinal tract. It starts working even before you ingest food. The moment you see and smell that warm bread or pasta dish, your salivary glands gets active. After ingesting your food and chewing into smaller pieces, your saliva mixes with the food, breaking it into an absorbable form that your body can use. The tongue helps to move the food to the next organ Esophagus The esophagus is a long tube close to your trachea (windpipe). It receives food from your mouth, and move it to your stomach through a series of muscular contractions called peristalsis. But for this food to move down, the ring-like muscle called lower esophageal sphincter has to relax to allow passage into the stomach. After that, the muscle contracts to prevent backward flow into the esophagus, which may cause acid reflux or heartburn. Stomach The stomach holds food and serves as the mixer and grinder of food. The cells in the lining of this sac-like organ secrete a strong acid and enzymes that are involved in the breakdown of food into a usable form. After proper processing of the food in the stomach, changing it to a consistency of paste or liquid, the content is then moved to the small intestine. Small intestine This organ is a muscular tube 22-foot long, having three segments- the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. This organ is the “workhouse” of digestion, and most nutrients are absorbed here. Foods are mixed with digestive enzymes released by the pancreas and bile produced from the liver. Peristalsis is also in action in this organ, moving food through as it is being mixed with digestive juices. The duodenum is the first segment and it is largely responsible for continuing the breakdown process. The jejunum and ileum are responsible for the absorption of nutrients into the bloodstream. Once the nutrients have been absorbed, the leftover (the waste) passes into the large intestine or colon. Large Intestine (Colon) The large intestine is a muscular tube that is 6-foot long, and it links the small intestine directly to the rectum. It has segments, including: Cecum Ascending (right) colon Transverse (across) colon, Descending (left) colon, Sigmoid colon This organ is highly specialized and it is responsible for processing waste to ease emptying of the bowels. The stool or waste left over is sent to the colon through peristalsis, and any remaining water is absorbed. The stool is stored in the sigmoid colon until a mass movement pushes it down into the rectum to begin the process of elimination through the anus. Accessory Digestive Organs and functions Liver The liver secretes bile and process the nutrient-rich blood coming from the small intestine. It purifies this blood of impurities before allowing it to travel to the rest of the body. Pancreas The pancreas is the main factory for digestive enzymes that helps to break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. These enzymes are secreted into the duodenum segment of the small intestine. Gallbladder This is a sac for the storage of excess bile made in the liver. This bile is released via the bile duct into the small intestine, where it helps to break down fat and move waste out of the liver. Gut-brain connection The brain has a strong connection to the gastrointestinal tract, especially the stomach and small intestine. For example, the thoughts of food alone can trigger the release of the stomach’s juice even before eating. The walls of the digestive system are lined with more than 100 million nerves, starting from the esophagus to the rectum. That’s called the brain in your gut, otherwise known as the enteric nervous system (ENS). So those moments when you’re nervous and feel “butterflies in your stomach,” the ENS is at work. This brain in your gut mainly controls digestion, from swallowing to enzyme release and food breakdown and absorption. Although this ENS is not capable of thought as we know, it has a direct link with our big brain. More so, the ENS can trigger big emotional shifts, especially in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and bowel problems like diarrhea, constipation, bloating, stomach upset, and pain. Little wonder people with these issues tend to develop depression and anxiety. You can consult Doctor Jason Jones at our Chiropractic office, Elizabeth City, NY, to get mind-body therapies to help your gut function.

A Better Ostomy Bag

As a kid and a young man Michael Seres, the founder and CEO of 11 Health, was plagued by Chrons disease and intestinal problems. Eventually, this required him to have an intestinal transplant, just the 11th ever performed in the UK. The surgery left him with a permanent companion, an ostomy bag. Tapping on business skills he developed creating product merchandising for TV shows like The Apprentice and Who Wants to Be A Millionaire, he created a better ostomy bag and launched 11 Health. TRANSCRIPT: Intro: 0:01 Inventors and their inventions. Welcome to Radio Cade a podcast from the Cade Museum for Creativity and Invention in Gainesville, Florida. The museum is named after James Robert Cade , who invented Gatorade in 1965. My name is Richard Miles. We’ll introduce you to inventors and the things that motivate them, we’ll learn about their personal stories, how their inventions work, and how their ideas get from the laboratory to the marketplace. Randy Scott: 0:40 For those of you expecting the wisdom of Richard Miles, I apologize, but this is your guest host today, Randy Scott, and I’m here today for Radio Cade, with Michael Seres, the founder and CEO of 11 health and the inventor of the Alfred smart optimi bag. Hi Michael, thanks for joining us today. It’s going to be interesting to chat about this. So as we normally do here, Michael, we’d like to start actually with having you explain and, you know, fairly simple terms, just what the Alfred smart bag is and why it’s important. Michael Seres: 1:16 Sure. Let me start by explaining a little bit about, an ostomy, typically, an ostomy is where part of your intestine is brought to the outside of your tummy and you have a bag attached to that part of the intestine. And that’s known as an ostomy bag. And most people I guess understand about a colostomy bag, but it’s generally after surgery that would come from either bowel cancer or inflammatory bowel disease and where your bowel either needs to rest or isn’t working. The part of the intestine is brought on the outside and those bags traditionally are collection vessels. They fill up and they leak and spill. And when you’ve had that surgery, part of your nerve endings is cut. And so you don’t actually know when those bags are filling and what’s happening to them. It’s kind of like a diaper as it feels, and you don’t necessarily know when to change it. And so what I did really, after my own experiences as an ostomy patient was to deconstruct an existing bag and rebuild it with a series of senses inside. And those senses are mainly temperature, sensors, and capacity senses that out. You understand when the bags have failed, that the sorts of senses that you would have in a car there , you know, sometimes the cars beep when you get too close to another car or when you’re crossing over a lane. And so I integrated those senses into an optimi bag, and now they will send a signal to my cell phone when my bag is filling. And so it can prevent the leaks and the spills. And what it also enables us to do is send that information to the doctors so that they can help manage mine and other people’s conditions better. As an example, if you have too much output in a day, you are prone to dehydrating and if you have too little out put in a day, it might indicate there’s a blockage or there’s some inflammation in the intestines . So your doctors need to know that data in real time. And currently the existing bags don’t do that. Randy Scott: 3:24 So you’ve mentioned that you’re an ostomy patient yourself, so I guess you kind of come by this vention honestly, so to speak and you and I have already talked about this a little bit of course, but maybe for our listeners benefit, kind of describe where did you grow up? Cause I tell from your accent that you’re obviously not originally from Southern California, but maybe a little bit about your childhood, but then tell us how you came to become an ostomy patient the first place. Michael Seres: 3:50 Sure. So as you can tell from my accent, I speak the Queen’s English. I grew up in Northwest London and I’ve been out in Southern California, the last two and a half years, but I’ve got a younger sister, mum and dad, and grew up as a , a massive sports fan, became interested in my late teens in politics and law. But most of my childhood was interrupted with health challenges. I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, which I’m sure many of the listeners will know is, is an incurable inflammatory bowel disease. And I was diagnosed with that age 12. I had my first surgery at age 14, and then I went on, unfortunately to have 25 further intestinal surgeries, or basically they will continue to resect part of my intestine and my bowl. And then I got to a point during my working life where I had intestinal failure. And basically your intestine is down to less than a hundred centimeters, and you’re really kept alive through intravenous feeding. And that lasted for about 18 months before I became the 11th intestinal transplant patient in the UK, which is why my company is called 11 health. And so, Randy Scott: 5:02 Well that answers one of my other questions. Michael Seres: 5:04 Yeah, I would love to tell you it was a really great branding exercise, but it was just from that. So I’ve lived my life connected to medical bags for most of it, which was the inspiration behind the company. Randy Scott: 5:17 Going on, I guess a little bit about your history before founding 11 health, just to dig in a little bit more there and we’ll come back to the, you offered a bag and all, but it sounds like you were a natural entrepreneur from early on too . I think you started a candy business when you were a youngster, even before all of this other intestinal issues came up. Hopefully not from eating too much candy. Michael Seres: 5:38 Yeah. I grew up around both grandfathers who were , uh , own their own businesses, one in the clothing industry, one in the o ld b ristles trade. And so I grew up, Randy Scott: 5:49 Bristles ? Like Brushes? Michael Seres: 5:51 Yeah. He made the shaving brushes. You put the shaving cream on and the old traditional style. And he was one of the first people to fly out to China, and those days it would be for months on end, then come back. So I grew up around relatively entrepreneurial, I guess, family, as you said, I ran the alternative school candy shop from my locker, which probably upset the teachers, but it did make me some extra pocket money. I did paper rounds . And I’ve been lucky enough and always been intrigued and interested in how business ran prior to 11 health. I then had a career in consumer product licensing and merchandising. So, television programs that , that you probably aware of, like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, The Apprentice, T.he X-Factor my job was to commercialize those programs off there. So take the intellectual property, take the gaming format . And so one of the first commercial agreements that I signed was the mobile phone or the cell phone game for Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, which now probably feels very outdated. But at the time was one of the first games on a cell phone that you could play. So I’ve always been in and around b usiness. Randy Scott: 6:57 So if you’re doing the apprentice, I’m guessing you’re doing Donald Trump action figures before they were cool. Michael Seres: 7:04 Yes, absolutely. And the book and it was interesting. So in the UK, we had our own Donald Trump figure known as Alan Sugar and exactly the same thing. It’s books, it was figures. It was you name it all, all the merchandise that you’d see in traditional retail outlets . That was our job. Randy Scott: 7:23 But then you started , uh , like a toy company or something also doing licensing. Is that right? Michael Seres: 7:30 Yeah, that’s right. So, because I was working in and around building brands, I was lucky enough to cure the rights to various toy brands. People may have heard of Thomas the Tank Engine and Bob the Builder, little kids brands. And so at some point I took the right for myself and built a small toy company, manufacturing those products and then selling them into retail. And in fact, all those learnings have been fantastic instruction manual for , for where I am today. I’ve been lucky to have great mentors and just intrigued about how you build businesses across different countries with different rights. Randy Scott: 8:08 And so at some point you moved over to the U.S. From the UK? Michael Seres: 8:13 Yes . So I moved about two and a half years ago to the U.S. Really as, as 11 health was starting to expand. And I was lucky enough to be mentored by someone I’m sure, you know, by Mike M oritz Firms, S equoia Capital, and he and Mike really in a sense gave me two rules. When he first worked with me one, you need to be based in the U.S. If you’re trying to grow your business out here. And secondly, don’t run it like a British company. And so I u pped s ticks and I , at the time I left my family in the UK and I was commuting eight weeks in the U.S. two weeks in the UK, and then finally convinced them to come over just under a year ago. So now we’re all Southern b ased. Randy Scott: 8:55 I’m not surprised he made the comment about the U.S. In part, because of course the U.S. especially in medical products is always by far the largest market in the world, but this notion of don’t run it like a UK company. Well , what did that mean? Michael Seres: 9:09 I think to me, the big difference that I noticed here is you put more time in terms of building your technology growing a little bit more aggressively, even in healthcare , it’s slightly more opportunities for younger companies to grow. If you get regulatory approval here, you can really expand a lot quicker in the UK. The traditional model is you invest a little, make a little bit of money, put , perhaps put half in the bank and invest the rest. And it’s a slower churn and a slower build. Whereas there’s more value as well put to growing technology. And I think, I mean, you’re the expert far more than I am because of what you do. But I think if the addressable market is big enough and you’ve got an opportunity, it’s a much quicker pace here. And I think that was at the half of the lesson he was trying to, Randy Scott: 9:58 That makes sense. Things in the UK are a bit more conservative, maybe old school in terms of how to grow the business, as opposed to the California approach . Michael Seres: 10:06 I think you’ll braver here about trying new things, about giving an opportunity to younger companies to grow. We’re a little bit more old school. I think that’s a great phrase. Randy Scott: 10:16 So going back, you had, as you’ve described for issues , medical problems, you’ve got the ostomy bag. And I think I gathered from the research. I did that, one of the things that may be sort of steering you in this direction and got you plugged into the ostomy community, was that you started a transplant blog that took off kind of virally, is that right? Michael Seres: 10:36 Yes, that’s absolutely right. So an intestinal transplant, as I said, I was number 11 and sadly five of the first 10 had passed away. And actually the unit at Oxford in the UK where I had mine brought their surgeon over from Miami to run the program. And I was his first and everybody inevitably wants to know how you’re doing it . There’s an awful lot of interest and love. And actually I started the blog at the beginning, just so that people didn’t have to call and so my wife didn’t have to repeat the same stories. It was a way of sharing what was going on, but then I actually discovered that my transplant surgeon was reading it and that he was sharing it then with the medical students at the hospital. And it just grew really through luck. And then it became a story of my journey. I was very honest about the ups and downs of the journey, and it connected me with a new community and it really opened my eyes as well to the power of the role that the patient can play. And also how you can connect people on social media. And in a sense, I was late to the social media party, but it really allowed me to connect with people all around the world, which was fantastic. Randy Scott: 11:47 Yeah I’ve noticed that 11 health habit just innovated with the product, which has clearly unique and serves a specific need, but it looks like you’ve created an entire, almost support structure around these patients that include some social network kind of elements, but also patient coaches. And you’ve got something called club 11 and in some doctor and nurse training and this kind of stuff . So maybe describe the ecosystem that you had to build there. And for that matter, why you felt the need to do that, as opposed to just, Hey, I’ve got a cool product, I’m going to go sell this cool product. Michael Seres: 12:24 You definitely do a better job of selling less than half than I do. Thank you. But as a 16 year old, I went to see a , uh , leading gastroenterologist in the UK. He was actually the Queen’s physician and he was a quite a scary man. And as a 16 year old, I was a bit all over the place. And when I went to see him on the first day with my parents, he asked my parents to leave the room. And he said to me, here’s the deal, Michael, I will only treat you if you take as much responsibility for your care as I will, we’re going to teach each other and we’re gonna work together on this and transplant surgeon, pretty much repeated the same words all those years later. And so I’ve always grown up believing that as a patient, I have to pay as vital role in my own care as my medical team. And so the reason for sort of sharing that backstory is that when we built 11 Health, I really was plugged in and believed that actually the role of patient to patient can not only improve outcomes, but also can save money for the system, but really improve quality of life mentorship, the education side. And so we built this originally the support network that now really starts a pre-op, when you’re told you’re going to have surgery, we pair you up with an existing ostomy patient who becomes your coach and your mentor. And now with the way health coaching is growing, particularly in the U.S. we put these patients through coaching accreditation and they become your , your mentor and your guide, and they become part of the pre-op and post-op planning on what we’ve been able to see then is we can actually reduce the number of clinical interactions a patient needs to have, because so much of what they go through after surgery is actually nonclinical. It, it’s social, it’s educational, it’s hints and tips. It’s the practical things of how do you get back to a normal life? And I really value that peer to peer side of things. For me, it’s the greatest thing I can do is to support another patient. And this is just an extension of it. Randy Scott: 14:28 It sounds like you connect with your patient slash customer, future customer or whatever, before they actually have even had their surgeries. So this means, obviously you’re really integrated with the surgeon somehow to them. Michael Seres: 14:41 You’re absolutely right. And we’ve become part of that pre-op education. So the surgeon and often the nurse will go in and say, this is the surgery your having, this is what it means. And then 11 Health patient coach will be brought in to explain in more practical terms and be there as that support. And I think that builds that relationship right at the start of the journey. And we’ve even seen where patients perhaps have had their bag reversed. So they’re not on it anymore. They continue on with our patient coaches because they become almost a friend and a support system to them. I think that value is going to grow. And I think in a healthcare system, which is moving globally to sort of outcomes based, which is moving the term precision medicine and keeps coming out well, how do you really understand the outcomes unless you include the patient? Cause sometimes the surgical outcomes and the patient outcomes, aren’t always aligned. And so, Randy Scott: 15:37 Yeah I think frequently they aren’t aligned exactly. Michael Seres: 15:39 Yeah, And I know for myself that there are times when actually the most important outcome to me is to go to my daughter’s concert and not sit in hospital for three hours connected to an IV drip. And how do you facilitate those in a sensible way? So that’s really important to me, 11 Health, that it’s not just about technology, it’s about the human being as well. Randy Scott: 16:03 No that’s great. Yeah, one of the other things that I’m curious about is even as a very young company, you’ve been able to surround yourself with a lot of impressive kind of board members and advisors and that kind of stuff. You get several pretty important surgeons. And I noticed even Joe Kiani, who is the CEO of Massimo multi-billion dollar global health care products company, how did you get Joe to agree to be on your board? I suspect there’s thousands of startups that would love to have somebody like him as an advisor and board member probably get plenty of invitations, but something about this one got him to actually sign up, is there a story to that? Michael Seres: 16:41 Yeah. So Joe was actually instrumental in me, settling in, in orange County and stuff in California, and had advised me to come over and it was going to be traditionally in Silicon Valley. And I’ve , to be honest with you, I looked at the costs and I’m not an engineer by background. And I didn’t want to just necessarily recruit a group of people who we might be the hottest startup today, but not necessarily tomorrow. So I looked at where a lot of medical device manufacturing was going to be a nut was in orange County. And I wrote to Joe and I guess got lucky. And originally it was about the ecosystem in orange County. Is it a place that you would suggest settling or starting a business in? And he said, yes, that was how I got originally to start. And it was just some advice on the area. And then the relationship grew. And I think what we were trying to do from an engineering perspective peaked his interest, but we built a relationship and in the end he said, look, I’m happy to invest in and come on the board. And he’s been a fantastic mentor. He built his business from nothing to where it is, if we’re anywhere near as successful as Joe’s been , I’ll be over the moon. Yeah . I mean, to be honest with you, I’ve been incredibly lucky. I reached out to you and your team and we’ve connected and we’re on this call is, I don’t know whether it’s a patient trying to build a solution, opens the door. I think sometimes people don’t always ask for help. I’m learning what I’m really good at and what I’m really bad at. And I’m not frightened to ask for the help . Maybe that’s something. Randy Scott: 18:12 Yeah probably a good piece of advice for other entrepreneurs and inventors and they listen to, don’t be afraid to ask for help. That was in my experience also. Michael Seres: 18:19 There’s a tendency to think that you built something, it’s yours, you’ve got to know everything. You’ve got to do everything. And for whatever reason, I’ve never approached. What I’m trying to do is that I’m the only one that can do it. It’s how do I surround myself with amazing people to support me? And I’ve been lucky. I’ve learned with Joe, what a s you have with different people i s h e w ants to go straight to the nub of the problem, straight away, answer it and move on. And, u h, when you’ve got 10 minutes of p eople’s precious time trying to use that wisely is k ey. Randy Scott: 18:49 So jump back for a moment to the Alfred bag. So you’ve got this bag and you described this , having these sensors in it and the sensors I gather tell you at a minimum, the volume of the bag, and it’s communicating that this mobile app on your cell phone, is there other information being gathered as well, or is it really just kind of volume and it’s time to change it ? Michael Seres: 19:13 One of the main things that we look at is skin temperature change. We have sensors that effectively are picking up around the site of the wound, a temperature change, and that’s a very strong indicator for infection markers. It’s also a strong indicator that your bag is leaking. So there’s a clinical relevance to that and a patient application. And we’ve now started to pick up our first electrolyte markers so we can pick up sodium and pH. And if I had privilege of coming back to talk to you in sort of nine months time, we’ll have integrated some bio sensors. So we can analyze some of the large molecules and pick up inflammatory markers and bacterial issues. That’s sort of the trajectory to turn effectively the bag into a, almost a lab in a bag that we can pick up clinically relevant data and then help treat the patient that way. I’m very wedded to it being relevant data. Randy Scott: 20:06 Yeah , for sure. Again, it’s I kind of looked through your website and there was a lot of description of this being technology for medical bags, as opposed to just ostomy bags . I’m guessing that means that you’ve got some long-term dreams and visions outside of just the ostomy backspace space and some applications for the technology more broadly. Michael Seres: 20:26 Absolutely. I mean, we have started the development for urology to look at urine analysis. And so yes, I think the medical bag industry is an old established industry. And I think I view the bag as an opportunity to collect data that that can really make a difference clinically into patient lives. So , so the goal has been to really transform that whole sector. And ironically, we probably started with the hardest bag enough , an ostomy bag is not solid. It’s not stable patients move around the whole time. So actually analyzing data from an ostomy bag is the most challenging, but it stands us in good stead as we move to the next area. And , uh , one day I actually have a vision that we could take the array of sensors that we’ve built and drop them into anybody’s bathroom. And actually if you’ve got inflammatory bowel disease or you’ve got a condition that isn’t connected to a bag that we could pick up clinically relevant information, but I’m giving you my dream. Randy Scott: 21:22 Smart toilet that we’ve been hearing about for a long time. Michael Seres: 21:26 Absolutely. And that’s the dream into the future. I’m aware we’ve got a long way to go. Randy Scott: 21:30 Yeah, of course. Yeah. People will have to decide whether they really want a smart toilet, whether everyone else I kind of like mine being dumb, but I can certainly understand the medical value too. Michael Seres: 21:38 Yeah , I think you’re right. But for today and tomorrow, it’s definitely about bags. Randy Scott: 21:42 This has been great talking by the way. And I look forward to obviously continuing to hear about the progress, but we’re just about out of time here. So any words of wisdom that you would give to other entrepreneurs and inventors you talked about, don’t be afraid to ask for stuff that’s actually think is a really great piece of advice, but any other bits of advice you’d like to share? Michael Seres: 22:03 One thing I’d probably say, and I’ve learned, mainly from mistakes is you have to solve the problem for all the end users. And so whilst I’m very patient focused and everything is about improving patient quality of life, unless we deliver data in a meaningful way to the doctor or we integrate the right way with the system or we bill our services, that makes sense. And we provide economic value to the payers you can’t scale. And so I think one of the big things I would say particularly, I guess in h ealth c are, is u nderstand who the end users are and the solution has to solve problems for all of them. Randy Scott: 22:40 That’s a good piece of advice. You know, there’s a book out actually in the middle of reading right now, ironically, that is kind of along this line, it’s called The Wide Lens by a guy named Ron Adner and a wide ledge, really just talking about this innovation ecosystem and making sure that it works, whatever your innovation is, works and kind of rewards everyone in the ecosystem as opposed to just the end user . I think that’s kind of what you’re talking about. It seems like you guys done a great job of hinting to that. Where there’s, you know, there’s something to be gained by everyone around while you’re doing. Michael Seres: 23:13 I think you have to understand everybody’s pain points. Don’t you? I mean, as I said, you’ve got more experience with companies than I have, but I think that you have to solve problems for everybody that’s going to interact with it. Otherwise you just can’t scale. And I think we naively went off after the patient pain point and then realized actually we have to do everything for everyone else as well. Randy Scott: 23:32 Well, yeah , I think that is increasingly true these days in part, because everyone has a million new innovations or whatever to think about and deal with and react to and so people are too interested in innovation for innovation’s sake. They want innovation. That’s going to somehow make their life easier, even if they’re not the user to your point. So yeah, Michael, appreciate the time here. It’s been great chatting and look forward to staying in touch with you and seeing how 11 Health continues to succeed and thrive. Michael Seres: 24:06 Randy, it’s been an absolute privilege. Thank you so much for inviting me onto your show. Detailed Show Notes Coming Soon! For Learn True Health Listeners: Get 20% off EnergyBits by using coupon code: LTH  Visit EnergyBits.com http://EnergyBits.com   Algae  http://learntruehealth.com/algae/ Algae is considered a superfood because it is not processed and is packed with minerals, vitamins, and amino acids.  It also has antioxidants which are why my guest today, Catharine Arnston is such a strong advocate for educating people about the benefits of algae. Discovering Algae Catharine Arnston is Canadian but currently lives in the United States. She discovered the benefits of algae when her younger sister was diagnosed with breast cancer ten years ago. Upon the advice of her sister’s oncologist, Catharine Arnston’s sister had to change to an alkaline diet to help her healing. So her diet was primarily green tea, green vegetables and had to eliminate acidic foods. Fast forward a decade later, Catharine Arnston’s sister celebrated ten years free of cancer this year. This whole experience made Catharine Arnston decide to give up her corporate career of 25 years to help people. Making A Difference Catharine Arnston eventually pursued further studies at the Institute For Integrative Nutrition. After graduation, she put up a nutrition counseling company wherein she offered a curriculum teaching people how to eat healthy greens. Catharine Arnston also gave free workshops for corporations and hospitals for almost a year, trying to convince people to eat more greens. Catharine Arnston primary goal was to find a hassle-free way for people to digest more greens. During her research in 2010, she suddenly thought of algae tablets. Surveys showed that her friends were willing to take algae tablets, so the venture looked very promising.  Origin Of Algae According to Catharine Arnston, algae has been used for hundreds of years. Documented for approximately the past 50 years, it is the most studied food in the world and has been known to improve health aspects of mental acuity and athletic performance. “Algae is the very first plant life on earth three and a half billion years ago and they have fossils to prove it. It has been around three or four years longer than we have,” said Catharine Arnston. “So there’s got to be something special about something on earth that has existed four times longer than we have. That’s why I feel blessed to be to one to explain to people the importance of algae.” Quality Of Products The algae that Catharine Arnston uses for her products is grown in Taiwan. Taiwan is world-renowned to have the highest quality algae and the highest quality controls in place because it is such a significant crop. All the other algae are grown in Japan, China, India, and a small amount in Hawaii. Apparently, algae have different attributes, flavors, and components like wine. Catharine Arnston says that the water they use for their products comes from a mountain. She also assures that their water is very clean since it is triple-filtered. “The company that is growing algae for us has been growing algae for 50 years. They have a GMP certification, an ISO 9000 certification, and is certified organic,” said Catharine Arnston. “The company has an Asian certification. Getting U.S. certification is complicated because it is not in America. We also have a 3rd party FDA lab here in the United States, where we test every batch.” Catharine Arnston proudly adds that they are by far, the only algae in America that are endorsed by doctors. Laboratory tests that show there is no metal and pesticides in Catharine Arnston’s ENERGYbits products. They are also the only company wherein the Chlorella products contain no lead. Competitive Industry Catharine Arnston attests that algae products are a multi-billion dollar industry in Asia. She says it is almost as big as the beef industry in the United States. But in making algae products mainstream, people have misconceptions about what algae are. “Nobody knows about it because it is food. It’s no different than broccoli. Biotech and pharma companies were interested in promoting algae because there’s no patent. You can’t patent broccoli or algae because it is just a vegetable,” said Catharine Arnston. Catharine Arnston further reveals that the companies selling algae in the United States tend to be just the same as the companies selling algae in Asia. Apparently, only the packaging is different. “Most of the product comes from China, and there’s insufficient quality control. So nobody knew for sure what they’re putting in their bodies. And to think they’re supposed to be taking this to improve their health,” Catharine Arnston said.  She adds,”Most chlorella products contain lead but not ours. There’s great uncertainty on who to trust. I had to be sure ours is the highest quality. So I started this journey after helping my sister.” Catharine Arnston also shares that the statistics of cancer and heart disease show that 98% of chronic illnesses are lifestyle and diet-related. That is why she is trying to help people understand how to be healthy, using the gifts from Mother Nature. Catharine Arnston’s goal is also to teach people how to differentiate the different kinds of algae, which ones are good for us and which algae to use for different purposes. Spirulina Algae There are about 15 strains of algae, and it is part of the seaweed family. But seaweed is grown in the ocean and does not have the same nutrients. In a category called algae, the only two that are produced as crops are spirulina and chlorella. Spirulina is known as the earth’s very first plant life. It is a blue-green algae wherein the blue color comes from a pigment called phycocyanin. “The blue pigment has incredible healing properties. One of which is that it stops cancer. It stops the growth of blood vessels to tumors or cancers and is called anti-angiogenesis,” explains Catharine Arnston. “Angiogenesis is when blood vessels are grown to support a tumor or cancer.” She adds,”There are certain foods and different things that have anti-angiogenesis properties that stop the growth of blood vessels. And the blue phycocyanin in spirulina is one of those things.”  Benefits Of Spirulina Catharine Arnston says we 99.9% can get all the protein within 15 minutes and literally within seconds if we chew spirulina. This is because all the protein in Spirulina is already in an amino acid form. And because there is nothing left for our body to break it down, it is instantly absorbable because it is technically a bacteria. “Spirulina is not a detoxifier. It is a cleanser. In Japan, when babies are born, they cannot digest mothers milk and would die otherwise. The only thing that keeps them alive is spirulina in water,” shares Catharine Arnston. “During my research, I looked at the nutrient profile and the amino acid profile of mother’s milk colostrum. It has the same nutrient profile as spirulina.” Chlorella On the other hand, chlorella does not have the blue pigment. It is a plant that contains the highest chlorophyll in the world. Chlorophyll is good for cleansing and it is also very healing.  “Most pigments and antioxidants are water-based. Chlorophyll is one of the few fat-based pigments and antioxidants,” Catharine Arnston said. “Our cells need fat. That’s what Omega 3 does. It helps heal the cell. So now, nutrients can easily flow into the cell, and toxins can easily flow out of the cell. That’s one of the benefits of chlorophyll.”  She adds, “It aids the health of the cell. If the cell wall and cells are healthy, the immune system will be healthy, and the mitochondria will be healthy. Everything will work a lot better.” Catharine Arnston also says only 10% chlorophyll gets absorbed in the stomach. The rest of the Chlorophyll stays in our gut and moves into our entire digestive tract, through the liver, and down our colon. It cleans up garbage in our body as it goes along and heals all the cell walls. Importance of Vitamin K2 Most heart attacks and heart diseases are not caused by cholesterol. According to Catharine Arnston, it is caused by inflammation and hardening of the arteries because of too much calcium in arteries. “The arteries become brittle and not flexible. In effect, blood can’t flow and can cause high blood pressure. And the only thing that pulls this excess calcium out is vitamin K2,” said Catharine Arnston. “The only place you can get vitamin k2 is either grass-fed animal protein, fermented foods, and chlorella. If you take vitamin K2, your body will take out all that excess calcium that’s hardening your arteries and moves into your bones or teeth.” I can vouch for what Catharine Arnston said. I had Dr. Carolyn Dean on episode 227 of my show recently, and she said that our body does need vitamin K2 and magnesium. This is to help deposit calcium and other minerals into our bones. Another excellent reference was Dr. Weston A. Price’s discovery a long time ago. In his research, Dr. Weston A. Price discovered indigenous cultures had great teeth good healthy bacteria in their mouths because vitamin K2 was plentiful in their gut and diet. For added reference on chlorella, I’m inviting my listeners to check out my interview with Dr. Dietrich Kinghardt on episode 218.  Energybits Products Catharine Arnston has a fantastic line of products called ENERGYbits, RECOVERYbits, SKINNYbits, and VITALITYbits. All her products are 100% organically grown, non-GMO spirulina and chlorella algae tablets. “These are complete food-based replacements for multivitamins. They are eco-friendly and a natural source of omega food,” assures Catharine Arnston. To celebrate the second anniversary of the Learn True Health, we have a special treat for all the listeners to Learn True Health.  Upon ordering any of the products on Catharine Arnston’s website, don’t forget to enter the LTH coupon code to avail of the 20% discount upon checkout. Bio Catharine Arnston has a thirty-year career as an international Attache for the Canadian and British Governments, publisher of an international magazine and Founder of three startups. But in 2009 when her younger sister was diagnosed with breast cancer and advised by her oncologist to change her diet to an alkaline one because it would help her heal, Catharine Arnston put her career on hold to help her sister.  In the process, she discovered algae, the most alkaline, nutrient-dense plant in the world that no one seemed to know about. Catharine Arnston knew algae would be a game changer for the world if she could just help Americans understand it. Because of that, ENERGYbits was born. They faced health problems, had a new baby, were sleep deprivation, fought colic, and spent a lot of complaining and arguing. They chose to learn from the experience and now work together to help other couples make intentional choices to care for each other and nurture their marriage. Leah's Answers To The Fun Questions: • What are you loving right now? 5yo reading independently, 3yo adult in a little boy's body, 16mo ham, spring in Tennessee, and getting to work with her husband. • What’s your favorite food/meal/snack? All the things (she's pregnant), but especially Chipotle. (Leah's favorite Chipotle hacks: https://www.buzzfeed.com/dartanionlondon/how-to-hack-your-chipotle-order?utm_term=.jv3oExg442#.okP64rEGGq) • What are you doing to take care of yourself? Joined a gym! • What are you doing to be brave? Writing a book (buy your copy here: https://theredoakcollective.com/collections/all-products/products/intentional-love-31-ways-marriage-bundle?aff=15) Connect with Leah: BLOG: LeahHeffner.com FACEBOOK: facebook.com/LifeAroundTheCoffeeCup TWITTER: twitter.com/LeahHeffner INSTAGRAM: instagram.com/LeahHeffner Connect with Becky: BLOG: BeckyLMcCoy.com FACEBOOK: facebook.com/BeckyLMcCoy TWITTER: twitter.com/BeckyLMcCoy INSTAGRAM: instagram.com/BeckyLMcCoy PINTEREST: pinterest.com/BeckyLMcCoy NEWSLETTER: BeckyLMcCoy.com/email  Share your Sucker Punched story at BeckyLMcCoy.com/Submissions Please subscribe to and rate this podcast to help others find Sucker Punched. We are not alone! Did you know that we are 10 times more bacteria than we are human? The bacteria that live in (and on us) play a significant role in how our body responds to stress, food, and our environment. In today's episode, microbiologist Kiran Krishnan helps us gain a clearer understanding of the human microbiome and how it relates to our overall health. Many health conditions--including skin issues like psoriasis and eczema to diabetes and Chron's disease, to candida, yeast issues, and even arthritis and cancer--can stem from an imbalance of bacteria in the gut. Kiran explains why popping a probiotic pill is not the solution and he offers refreshingly different suggestions for what to do to improve the health and strength of your own microbiome.
