"There's no other place on the planet where you can get together with owners of these communications companies and talk turkey." — Joe Marion, President, Cloud Communications Alliance As global tensions reshape the telecom landscape, the Cloud Communications Alliance (CCA) is assembling top leaders for its 2025 CCA European Summit in Zaventem, near Brussels, on June 16–17. In a conversation with Doug Green, Publisher of Technology Reseller News, CCA President Joe Marion offered a detailed preview of the timely and high-level agenda that will bring together executives, analysts, and policy experts for frank dialogue and strategic planning. With the theme "Navigating the Geopolitical and Economic Crossfire," this intimate 75-person summit is designed for C-level executives and decision-makers. Marion emphasized the event's relevance to both European and North American providers: "There are no walls in communications," he said, noting how cross-border policy changes, tariffs, and credit issues are affecting providers globally. Key Highlights of the Agenda: Opening Remarks by Maheen Khan, Economics Editor at The Times (London), on global polarization. Market Impact Session by Matt Townend of Cavell on the shockwaves facing European communication providers. Special Presentation from Zoom, the event's Gold Sponsor, featuring a yet-to-be-announced product update. Keynote by His Excellency Herman Van Rompuy, former Prime Minister of Belgium and first President of the European Council. Industry Insights from Dave Michels, Principal Analyst at TalkingPointz. Presentation by Destiny CEO Daan De Wever, on growing a pan-European telecom powerhouse. Panel Discussions on AI Adoption, Industry Disruption, and Strategic Partnerships. Marion noted that the conference has been designed by European members, for European members, ensuring relevance on topics such as tariffs, trade barriers, and innovation gaps between the U.S. and Europe—particularly in mobile and AI. “This isn't a trade show,” Marion stressed. “It's where real conversations happen—where partnerships are formed, deals are made, and innovation is shared.” Attendees can expect meaningful networking in a close-knit environment that fosters transparent exchange, away from the sales pitches and crowds of conventional events. Event Details: Dinner Kickoff: Evening of June 16 Main Event: June 17 at Destiny headquarters in Zaventem, near Brussels Airport Registration: cloudcommunications.com/EC25 Limited Seating: Only 90 seats available; over half are already sold. Amidst all the doom and gloom of the current zeitgeist, Harvard University literature professor & DLD 2025 speaker Martin Puchner remains cautiously optimistic about our high tech future. Reflecting on cultural and technological changes over the past 20 years. Puchner explains how digital technology has transformed academic research and teaching since 2005, noting how the internet has made obscure texts more accessible and changed how scholars work. While acknowledging concerns about declining humanities enrollment and student reading habits, Puchner maintains a cautiously optimistic outlook. He observes that while fewer top students choose to study literature, there's been a growth in public engagement with humanities through book clubs, podcasts, and adult education. Puchner offers nuanced perspectives on several contemporary issues, including the rise of student anxiety (which he attributes more to psycho-pharmaceuticals than technology), the paradox of people valuing reading while actually reading less, and the role of AI in education. He suggests that AI's ability to summarize texts might complement rather than replace deep reading, particularly for fiction where the reading experience itself is central. Looking ahead to 2045, Puchner is particularly optimistic about education's future, believing that interactive online platforms and AI could help democratize high-quality education globally. However, he maintains that human teachers will remain essential due to the affective, interpersonal nature of education—something demonstrated during COVID-19 when in-person interaction was lost. He sees technology as augmenting rather than replacing traditional educational experiences, much as print didn't eliminate lectures and film didn't replace theater.Martin Puchner, the Byron and Anita Wien Professor at Harvard University, is a prize-winning author, educator, public speaker, and institution builder in the arts and humanities. His writings range from philosophy and theater to culture and technology and have been translated into many languages. Through his best-selling Norton Anthology of World Literature and his HarvardX MOOC Masterpieces of World Literature, he has brought four thousand years of literature to audiences across the globe. His book, The Written World, which tells the story of literature from the invention of writing to the Internet, has been widely reviewed in The New York Times, The Times (London), the Financial Times, The Times Literary Supplement, The Atlantic, The Economist, among others, covered on radio and television, and has been translated into over twenty languages. It appeared on the Wall Street Journal bestseller list and received the Massachusetts Book Award. His book The Language of Thieves has been praised as an unusual combination of scholarship and memoir, and the writing, compared to Stevenson's Treasure Island and Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. An adventurous foray into the philosophy of language, it is also a reckoning with Germany's past. His book Literature for a Changing Planet is based on the inaugural Oxford University Lectures in European History, delivered in November 2019, has been reviewed in the Financial Times, The New York Review of Books and other venues. It calls for a new approach to storytelling and climate change. His most recent book, Culture: The Story of Us, tells a global history of culture that raises fundamental questions about how culture works, and how different cultures should relate to one another. In hundreds of lectures and workshops from the Arctic Circle to Brazil and from the Middle East to China, he has advocated for the arts and humanities in a changing world. At Harvard, he has instituted these ideas in a new program in theater, dance and media as well as in the Mellon School of Theater and Performance Research, which lasted from 2010-2022. Among his prizes are a Guggenheim Fellowship, fellowships at the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin and at the Cullman Center at the New York Public Library, the Berlin Prize, and the 2021 Humboldt Prize. He is a permanent member of the European Academy.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. In this episode I talk with Nate Klemp, PhD. Nate is a bestselling author and formally trained philosopher. He is the author of the new book OPEN: Living With an Expansive Mind in a Distracted World. Nate is also the coauthor of the New York Times Editors' Choice, The 80/80 Marriage: A New Model for a Happier, Stronger Marriage, and the New York Times Bestseller, Start Here: Master the Lifelong Habit of Wellbeing. I cannot think of a better guest to have on the podcast during these uncertain, catastrophic times. His new book, OPEN: Living With an Expansive Mind in a Distracted World is an important antidote to the ongoing trauma and division of the times. He offers the remedy of opening our minds and hearts despite our instinct to close them. Stay tuned as we talk about: How we're living in a time of closure: closing in through our screens and closing to each other. "Annihilating the power of the smart phone." The practice of skillful closing when things get too intense. How our mindset is contagious and how it reinforces our environment of closure. How we talk to each other about politics in either "strategic mode" where we're trying to 'win' or "communication" mode where we're trying to understand. Non-drug psychedelic experience and psychedelic-assisted therapy. Mindfulness, meditation, and the practice of open-awareness (like Dzogchen) meditation. And more! I'm sure you'll enjoy the conversation with Nate as much as I did. He is wise, funny, and a delightful conversation partner! In February 1942, Gordon Cummins, a twenty-eight-year-old Royal Air Force Serviceman, murdered four women and attempted to murder two others over a six-day period in London, leading the press to dub him “The Blackout Ripper.”At a time when the fear of imminent bombings was high and London was on high alert, authorities nonetheless launched an investigation and, quite remarkably, were able to catch Cummins quickly, thereby preventing any further murders; yet the question remains, how was it that a brutally violent killer manage to kill so many people in such a short amount of time and barely attract attention of the police and press?Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesBolton News. 1942. In response to the onset of German bombing raids during World War II, many of England's most vulnerable citizens evacuated or were temporarily evacuated out of urban areas to safer, more rural parts of the country. Those who remained in the cities would ultimately spend years enduring wartime blackouts, periods where the city was plunged into complete darkness in order to prevent German bombers from easily identifying their targets. The blackouts were a significant inconvenience and safety risk for everyone, but for at least one Londoner, they offered a perfect opportunity to enact his darkest fantasies.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesBolton News. 1942. On April 25, 2004, Broadmoor Hospital inmate Peter Bryan attacked a killed fellow inmate Richard Loudwell, a man awaiting sentencing for the murder of an eighty-two-year-old woman. The fact that the murder occurred in England's most famous and supposedly secure psychiatric hospital was shocking, but more shocking was that this was Bryan's third murder, and the second in as many months. Indeed, just two months earlier, while he was under the care of doctors and social workers in an open in-patient mental health hospital, Bryan left the facility in February and a few hours later he'd killed, dismembered, and partially cannibalized forty-three-year-old Brian Cherry.Peter Bryan's murders were highly sensationalized by the press, particularly the tabloids, who fueled the ongoing moral panic over the abysmal state of England's mental health system. While the reporting did little more than exacerbate the public's growing anger with the government, they nonetheless highlighted a very important question everyone wanted answered: How was a man with Bryan's mental health and criminal history able to get released institutional care, and moreover, why was he not under surveillance when he murdered a third time—this time in heavily guarded psychiatric hospital?ReferencesBennetto, Jason. 2005. On February 20, 1949, police in London arrested thirty-nine-year-old John George Haigh on suspicion of his connection to Olive Durand-Deacon, a wealthy widow who'd gone missing a few days earlier. Haigh had a long criminal history of fraud and theft, so when police discovered that Haigh had recently pawned several items belonging to the missing woman, they naturally believed he had robbed and possibly killed Duran-Deacon. The truth, they soon learned, was far worse. After days of interrogation, Haigh eventually confessed to the murder of Olive Durand-Deacon, telling detectives he had drained her of her blood, which he intended to drink, then disposed of her body in a forty-five gallon barrel of acid—but she was far from the first of his victims. By the time his case went to trial, investigators had connected Haigh to six victims, all dissolved in acid, and he'd confessed to three additional murders that were unconfirmed. In his confession, Haigh claimed he'd murdered his victims in order to drink their blood; though, it's far more likely his motive was primarily greed. Nevertheless, Haigh's claim was immediately seized upon by the British tabloids, who labeled him a “vampire killer” and provided endless sensational coverage of the arrest, trial, and his eventual execution. Philip Cunliffe joins us to talk about his recent book ‘The New 20 Year Crisis' which draws inspiration for the classic 1939 text ‘The 20 Year Crisis' by E. H. Carr to advance a powerful, incisive critique both of the liberal internationalist project of the past two decades, as well as the discipline of IR itself which beguiled by the ‘unipolar imaginary' has failed to comprehend the depth of the transformations currently underway in international politics. Philip provocatively argues that we are living through a wholesale structural reconfiguration of the international political order, a reconfiguration which spells the end of ‘the utopian dream of the receding era of unipolarity'. This claim sets the stage for a lively conversation where we touch upon questions of realism versus idealism, the autonomous logic of realpolitik, liberalism post-unipolarity, why Karl Rove is the ultimate constructivist(!), and, ultimately, why a fundamental rethink in how we practice and teach international relations is now essential if we are to fully reckon with rising multipolarity and shifting global power dynamics. Philip Cunliffe is Associate Professor in International Relations at the Institute for Risk & Disaster Reduction, University College London where he researches and teaches on the topics of international order, multinational military intervention and conflict management. He has 20 years of academic experience, having previously worked as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Kent and a Temporary Lecturer at the UK's Joint Services Command and Staff College. He obtained his PhD in War Studies from King's College London. He has also worked as a contributor to the Economist Intelligence Unit. He is a prolific author and editor, having published eight books and numerous academic articles and chapters on various aspects of international politics and security. He is committed to engaging with the public and the media, and writes for various outlets, including UnHerd, the New Statesman, the Spectator, the Times (London), Daily Telegraph, Compact, among others. At its simplest, Bayes's theorem describes the probability of an event, based on prior knowledge of conditions that might be related to the event. But in Everything Is Predictable, Tom Chivers lays out how it affects every aspect of our lives. He explains why highly accurate screening tests can lead to false positives and how a failure to account for it in court has put innocent people in jail. A cornerstone of rational thought, many argue that Bayes's theorem is a description of almost everything. But who was the man who lent his name to this theorem? How did an 18th-century Presbyterian minister and amateur mathematician uncover a theorem that would affect fields as diverse as medicine, law, and artificial intelligence? Fusing biography and intellectual history, Everything Is Predictable is an entertaining tour of Bayes's theorem and its impact on modern life, showing how a single compelling idea can have far reaching consequences. Tom Chivers is an author and the award-winning science writer for Semafor. Previously he was the science editor at UnHerd.com and BuzzFeed UK. His writing has appeared in The Times (London), The Guardian, New Scientist, Wired, CNN, and more. He was awarded the Royal Statistical Society's “Statistical Excellence in Journalism” awards in 2018 and 2020, and was declared the science writer of the year by the Association of British Science Writers in 2021. His books include The Rationalist's Guide to the Galaxy: Superintelligent AI and the Geeks Who Are Trying to Save Humanity's Future, and How to Read Numbers: A Guide to Stats in the News (and Knowing When to Trust Them). His new book is Everything Is Predictable: How Bayesian Statistics Explain Our World. Shermer and Chivers discuss: Thomas Bayes, his equation, and the problem it solves • Bayesian decision theory vs. statistical decision theory • Popperian falsification vs. Bayesian estimation • Sagan's ECREE principle • Bayesian epistemology and family resemblance • paradox of the heap • Reality as controlled hallucination • human irrationality • superforecasting • mystical experiences and religious truths • Replication Crisis in science • Statistical Detection Theory and Signal Detection Theory • Medical diagnosis problem and why most people get it wrong.

Hello, listeners! I've got a special surprise for you this week. I've been waiting to share this amazing conversation that I enjoyed recently with expat and author Joanna Moorhead about her fantastic new biography, Surreal Spaces: The Life and Art of Leonora Carrington. The British-born artist and writer Leonora Carrington (1917–2011) is one of the vanguards in the history of women artists and the history of Surrealism. The interests of this visionary—feminism, ecology, the arcane and the mystical, the interconnectedness of everything—are now shared by many. Challenging the conventions of her time, Carrington abandoned family, society, and England to embrace new experiences and forge a unique artistic style in Europe and the Americas. In this evocative illustrated biography, writer and journalist Joanna Moorhead traces her cousin's footsteps, exploring the artist's life, loves, friendships, and work. Leading readers on a personal journey across Britain, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the United States, and Mexico, Surreal Spaces describes the places and experiences that would become etched in Carrington's memory and be echoed, sometimes decades later, in her art and writing—whether her grandmother's kitchen with its giant stove; a remote Cornish hideaway where she holidayed with Max Ernst, Lee Miller, and Man Ray; the Left Bank of Paris; an asylum in Santander, Spain; New York, where she lived among other European exiles; or Mexico City, her final sanctuary. “Houses are really bodies,” Carrington wrote in her novella The Hearing Trumpet. “We connect ourselves with walls, roofs and objects just as we hang on to our livers, skeletons, flesh and blood streams.” Featuring photographs, drawings, and paintings of the spaces that so richly influenced Carrington's work, Surreal Spaces is an intimate and vivid portrait of a fascinating artist. About the author: Joanna Moorhead is a British journalist and author whose critically acclaimed memoir, The Surreal Life of Leonora Carrington, chronicles her relationship with Carrington, her cousin. Moorhead writes for the Guardian, the Observer, the Times (London), and many other publications. Please enjoy this bonus episode, featuring my discussion with Joanna. In this episode I will be taking a look at the ugly side of unrestricted capitalism, and how lobbying has skewed the public debate and shifted the Overton window to the right. Some would argue that unrestricted capitalism has been a great boon lifting society into an age of plenty. Others would argue that it has done this by maintaining an economic class hierarchy that enables the rich to enslave the poor. Are workers entering into employment agreements between equals for a mutually beneficial exchange of labour for wages, or are people forced into degrading wage slavery under duress by withholding the essentials of life like food, housing, and healthcare? My guest today will help us grapple with these issues. Naomi Oreskes is Professor of the History of Science at Harvard University and the author of nearly 200 scholarly papers and popular articles and numerous books including Merchants of Doubt and The Big Myth, both co-authored with Erik M. Conway. Her opinion pieces have appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, the Times (London), and many others. Her TED talk, "Why We Should Trust Scientists" was viewed more than a million times. She is an active participant in the World Economic Forum in Davos. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 4, 2023 is: girandole JEER-un-dohl noun Girandole can refer to an ornamental branched candlestick, as well as to a pendant earring usually with three ornaments hanging from a central piece. In its earliest uses, girandole referred to a radiating and showy composition, such as a cluster of skyrockets fired together for a fireworks display, or to a fountain issuing a rising column of spreading water. // The newlyweds found the most gorgeous girandole at an antique sale and couldn't wait to put it in their living room. // She admired the girandoles and topknots of the characters in her favorite period piece. // Seeing girandoles light up the night sky was his favorite part of the holidays. See the entry > Examples: "A girandole is no newcomer to the jewellery scene: it became fashionable in the 18th century—think rose-cut diamond drops twinkling in a candle-lit room. Sticklers for accuracy will want a central design motif, often a bow or similar, with three pear-shaped stones suspended underneath. David Morris, Gucci and Graff have some great modern-day versions. But the most covetable of all? Rare originals that occasionally come up for auction, having survived centuries without being separated." — Jessica Diamond, The Times (London), 28 Nov. 2022 Did you know? The word girandole can refer to several different things, all of them designed to provoke oohs and aahs. The earliest uses of girandole in English, in the 17th century, referred to a kind of firework, or to something with a radiating pattern like that of a firework, such as a fountain. Such a pattern is reflected in the word's etymology: girandole can be traced back by way of French and Italian to the Latin word gyrus, meaning "gyre" or "a circular or spiral motion or form." By the 18th century, girandole was being used for a branched candlestick, perhaps due to its resemblance to the firework. The word's use for a kind of earring was lit during the 19th century. While pinwheel and Catherine wheel are more often called upon for firework duty today, we note that there's nothing stopping you from applying the elegant girandole to the impressive displays that light up festive night skies.

The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style
The book I wanted and needed to read. Repeatedly, indirectly and directly women and the entire society at large are told that aging is bad, and it is especially an unwelcoming reality for women, but is this true? Fashion Director for The Times London since 2015 Anna Murphy recently turned 50, and in her new book (being released on May 30th in the states; in the UK it was released in March) Destination Fabulous: Finding your way to the best you yet, disagrees wholeheartedly with this false truth that women have begrudgingly or willingly accepted and explains exactly how each year, each decade can usher in more fulfillment, more life satisfaction and thus more contentment. She joined me from London last week before heading down to Mexico to take in Dior's Cruise presentation, and we had a lovely conversation about everything from the benefits of doing the hard work of getting to know yourself, how your style can bust clichés, the benefits of being age agnostic, how living our best life does physically affect our skin and visage, as well as the false promises made my anti-aging procedures, plus so much more. We begin our conversation with why she is the happiest she has ever been, and with that, I will encourage you to tune in to our conversation. I do hope you enjoy. Sam gives a thorough explanation into his present thesis on solving the hard problem of consciousness, explains how the concept of free will can be limiting with understanding psychopaths, and if he believes that artificial intelligence will one day become conscious. https://www.wakingup.com/knowthyself for free 30 days of Waking Up App ___________ Timecodes: (0:00) Intro (2:41) The Illusion of Self and the Process of Suffering (11:08) Our daily psychosis - Identification with thought (16:35) The Transitory Nature of Thought and the Benefits of Meditation (27:14) When ego is useful, and when to let go (32:40) Breaking the Spell of Negative Emotions (35:19) Understanding Impermanence and its Relation to Suffering (43:31) The concept of "Emptiness" in Buddhism (56:32) Pitfalls of the ‘goal' of enlightenment (59:11) The Duality of the Spiritual Path (1:12:15) The Illusion of Seeking and False Beliefs in Meditation Practice (1:14:58) How non-dual teachings got twisted (1:17:31) Waking up vs embodiment (1:25:21) Why spiritual teachers misbehave (1:30:57) Sam's Personal Pivotal Moments in the Journey of Self Inquiry (1:44:46) The hard problem of consciousness (2:09:24) Consciousness and Intelligence in AGI (2:17:42) Do we really have Free will? ABOUT CHARLIE'S GOOD TONIGHTThe fully authorized and official biography of legendary Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, one of the world's most revered and celebrated musicians of the last half century. British journalist Paul Sexton-who has covered the band for more than thirty years-has been authorized to write Watts' biography by his family, who have maintained a low-profile dignity both before and since the drummer's death. The welcome result is CHARLIE'S GOOD TONIGHT: The Life, the Times, and the Rolling Stones: The Authorized Biography of Charlie Watts (Harper; October 11, 2022; $27.99), a frank, affectionate portrait of an iconic musician and singular man. The book also has the approval of the Rolling Stones themselves, with forewords by both Mick Jagger and Keith Richards."Watts was the proof that not all rock stars are created equal, and that clichés are there to be avoided. Such as the one that, in his mind, he was a rock star at all," Sexton writes. "He was the global celebrity who hated attention and once said that he preferred the company of dogs to humans; the car enthusiast who didn't drive; the horseman who didn't ride; the man of wealth and taste who grew up in a prefab; the drummer who toured the world for five and a half decades and spent all of them yearning to be home. The jobbing musician who thought the Stones would be finished in a year and ended up as their pilot light with a whole-life tariff. If you made him up, you would find few believers."Drawing on exclusive interviews with bandmates and fellow musicians, with family and myriad friends from childhood through his late life, Sexton gives the full measure of the man. From working class beginnings during World War II to the Swinging Sixties when he was recruited for the Stones months after their formation, through the celebrity and debauchery of the 1970s and 80s, weathering band bust-ups and battles with personal demons, Watts remained remarkably even keeled. With roots in jazz, he openly admitted that the Rolling Stones' music was not really his cup of tea, but faithfully kept the steady beat of the band for almost sixty years. While it offers new glimpses behind the scenes, CHARLIE'S GOOD TONIGHT is not a retread of the legend that is the greatest rock 'n roll band in history, says Sexton. It is a portrayal of the life and times of a "someone whose like we won't see again, who almost seemed to belong in another epoch altogether: a man out of time, but always perfectly in time. The biography not only draws extensively on Sexton's huge archive with the Stones, but contains countless fresh interviews, including new reflections by Jagger, Richards and Ronnie Wood; Watts' daughter Seraphina, sister Linda and granddaughter Charlotte; former bandmate Bill Wyman; engineer and confidant Glyn Johns; and many more.ABOUT PAUL SEXTONPAUL SEXTON is an author and broadcaster whose work has appeared in The Times (London), Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, Billboard and numerous other publications, and extensively on BBC RadioBook Available on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/Charlies-Good-Tonight-Authorized-Biography/dp/0063276585/

He's worked for many famous publications such as The Economist, The Wall Street Journal and The Times (London).Matt is probably best known within the FIRE community for his award-winning book, The Rational Optimist, published in 2010.This is one of the best books I've ever read that offers a counterpoint to the prevailing pessimism of our age and proves, however much some people like to think to the contrary, that things are getting better. Some of the topics we cover are:How did Matt come to be a writer? In April 2020, just after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Roger Federer floated the idea of merging the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), the governing bodies of men's and women's tennis, respectively. Billie Jean King founded the WTA in 1973 after failing to persuade the men to create a joint venture. Nearly five decades on, the idea to project tennis's progressive face, of men and women competing together and as equals, and thereby creating a big enough product that is financially self-sufficient, is taking shape again. It doesn't necessarily mean a merger of the two competitions, but of the calendar, governance structures, decision-making, sponsorships, etc. A year ago, investment group CVC Capital Partners, a private equity company which has bought stakes in Spanish football's LaLiga and has a presence in the IPL with the Gujarat Titans, had floated a potential $600m agreement at turning the tours into a single commercial entity. As if on cue, on Tuesday, The Times (London) reported that CVC had struck a deal with the WTA for a 20% stake (about $150 million). There are expectations of a similar agreement with the ATP. Here we discuss various facets of the potential merger. Guests: Ankita Bhambri, a former tennis player and most recently the coach of the Indian Fed Cup (now Billie Jean King Cup) team; Sunder Iyer, secretary of the Maharashtra Lawn Tennis Association, which has hosted both ATP and WTA tournaments Host: N. On October 16, 1843, while on a stroll along the Royal Canal in Dublin, mathematician William Rowan Hamilton had an aha moment which led to his famed discovery of the algebraic equations known as quaternions which is now etched on the bridge. Research shows that although creative insight and analytical thinking are distinct modes of thought, they do complement each other. These aha or eureka moments are typically considered the manifestation of creativity in a few creative geniuses; however, having access to one's own creative process can be different for different people. On this episode, professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Drexel University, Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science and the Psychonomic Society, and international best-selling author, John Kounios, Ph.D., discusses the process and science of creative insight and analytical thinking that marks our discovery of a brilliant solution for small or big problems. We all need strong Executive Function mastery to counter the effects of a lack of insight and a lack of immersive experience into “problematic” components which can take away the focus needed for solving one's own problems.About John KouniosJohn Kounios, PhD, is a professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Drexel University. He has published cognitive neuroscience research on insight, creativity, problem solving, memory, and Alzheimer's disease and coauthored (with Mark Beeman) the international Amazon Bestseller, The Eureka Factor: Aha Moments, Creative Insight, and the Brain (Random House). John's research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation and has been reported by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Times (London), National Public Radio and was featured in BBC Television and Discovery Science Channel documentaries. His work was profiled by The New Yorker and The Saturday Evening Post and is part of a permanent exhibit at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. Helen Leake is one of Australia's most accomplished creative producers. Her feature credits include HEAVEN'S BURNING with Russell Crowe, BLACK AND WHITE starring Robert Carlyle, SWERVE with Jason Clarke, and WOLF CREEK 2. Her films have been selected for over 30 international Film Festivals, including Venice, Toronto (twice), London (twice), Karlovy Vary and Pusan. Helen develops intellectual property into world-class screen stories for the big screen, streaming services or networks depending on the content and style. Helen is working again with writer Louis Nowra after a successful collaboration on BLACK AND WHITE, a period drama which opened the Sydney Film Festival. Justice Michael Kirby said “every person in the country should watch this film”, critic Andrew Urban “(it is) the sort of film Australia should be making” and The Times London said “… a challenging film that dares to trust our intelligence”. Louis agreed to take on the commission of MONASH and the script has attracted one of Australia's most talented and accomplished directors, Bruce Beresford. This film will be an important contribution to Australia's culture, and tells the story of one of Australia's greatest heroes. www.duoart.com.au www.dancingroad.com Producers Helen Leake and Gena Ashwell and director Bruce Beresford aim to start shooting Monash, a biopic of Sir John Monash, hailed by many as the foremost Allied military commander in World War 1, in Europe in the northern spring. The screenplay is by Louis Nowra, who started collaborating with Leake in 2012. Beresford joined the project in the middle of last year. Leake and her Dancing Road Productions partner Ashwell have secured investment from the UK and France and are confident of raising the rest of the budget in Australia, including the Producer Offset. They plan to start shooting in France and England next May/June with a high-profile ensemble cast of Aussies and Brits. Screen Australia has provided story development funding. Explaining the rationale for the film, Leake tells IF: “Monash was a winner, a hero, unlike the Gallipoli story which was about loss. As Bruce said, ‘We have to make this film because there is a whole generation who know nothing about him or WW1 generally.'”
