The Electricity Association of Ireland (EAI) has published a comprehensive strategic roadmap to decarbonise the electricity sector, economy and society. This marks the shared view of the all-island electricity sector, from generation through to retail, of the critical role of electricity in achieving Ireland's climate goals. Ireland must increase electrification of industry, heating and transport in tandem with our accelerated renewables adoption as the key to our zero emissions future. Electrification of industry has stagnated in Ireland, increased ambition in this area is required so that excess renewables can be consumed in Ireland giving Irish industry a distinct advantage in greener industrial outputs. Investment of close to €2bn annually in electricity grid reinforcement, renewal and resilience is needed to drive this transformation. This is a level not previously seen on the island but necessary to avoid fines of over €8 billion. All-island policy, investment strategies and frameworks must be clear and cohesive to attract the necessary capital for post-2030 technologies. An investment framework that supports the decarbonisation of the All-island Electricity System and aligns with the scale of capital commitment and projected revenue streams is required. Presented at "Ireland's Zero e-Mission Future," a major all-island energy conference in Dublin yesterday organised by EAI, the roadmap envisions the electricity sector decarbonising ahead of society, paving the way for an emission-free future. By fostering greater investment and policy alignment, Ireland can lead the way in delivering a clean, reliable and affordable energy system for all. Keynote speakers Declan Hughes, Secretary General of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (ROI), and Ian Snowden, Permanent Secretary of the Department for the Economy (NI) addressed industry leaders including energy company CEOs and senior level stakeholders. Ireland's path to a low-carbon future relies on accelerating renewable energy adoption in tandem with increasing electrification across Industry, heating and transport. However, there has been slow progress in these areas after an initially positive start. Electrification of Industry has stagnated in; this roadmap calls for increased ambition so that excess renewables can be consumed in Ireland, giving Irish industry a distinct advantage in greener industrial outputs. The Climate Change Advisory Council has recently stated that Ireland could face EU fines of over €8bn after 2030 if the country stays on its current trajectory and misses climate targets. The Electricity Association is urging policymakers to revamp the current investment framework, ensuring it aligns with the scale of capital commitment to deploy new technologies and the projected revenue streams associated with them. In addition, close to €2bn annually will be required for future grid reinforcement, renewal and resilience to enable a 60% reduction in emissions from the sector by 2030. The roadmap outlines key actions, including a comprehensive review of the Capacity Remuneration Market (CRM) (which ensures sufficient generating capacity, especially during peak times) and the assessment of Investment options to support low-carbon technologies. Commenting on the report, Dara Lynott, CEO of the Electricity Association of Ireland, said: "The electricity sector has led the way in reducing carbon emissions while providing a safe and secure energy supply and is ambitious in its goal to power a decarbonised society. This roadmap sets out how, with the right investment signals and greater ambition, this can be achieved. "The electricity sector must decarbonise in advance of society, but the potential technology options that will help us achieve this goal all carry high levels of uncertainty. They share a requirement for significant capital, long construction times, decades-long lifespans, and a critical need for investment decisions to be made well in advan...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Alignment Research @ EleutherAI, published by Curtis Huebner on May 3, 2023 on LessWrong. The past and future of AI alignment at Eleuther Initially, EleutherAI focused mainly on supporting open source research. AI alignment was something that was acknowledged by many of the core members as important, but it was not the primary focus. We mainly had discussions about the topic in the #alignment channel and other parts of our discord while we worked on other projects. As EAI grew, AI alignment started to get taken more seriously, especially by its core members. What started off as a single channel turned into a whole host of channels about different facets of alignment. We also hosted several reading groups related to alignment, such as the modified version of Richard Ngo's curriculum and an interpretability reading group. Eventually alignment became the central focus for a large segment of EAIs leadership, so much so that all our previous founders went off to do full time alignment research at Conjecture and OpenAI. Right now, the current leadership believes making progress in AI alignment is very important. The organization as a whole is involved in a mix of alignment research, interpretability work, and other projects that we find interesting. Moving forward, EAI remains committed to facilitating and enabling open source research, and plans to ramp up its alignment and interpretability research efforts. We want to increase our understanding and control of modern ML systems and minimize existential risks posed by artificial intelligence. Our meta-level approach to alignment It is our impression that AI alignment is still a very pre-paradigmatic field. Progress in the field often matches the research pattern we see in the ELK report, where high level strategies are proposed, and problems or counterexamples are found. Sometimes these issues can be fixed, but oftentimes fundamental issues are identified that make an initially promising approach less interesting. A consequence of this is that it's difficult to commit to an object level strategy to make progress on AI alignment, and even harder to commit to any grand strategic plan to solve the problem. Instead it makes more sense to have a meta level strategy that makes us better able to leverage our unique position within the AI research ecosystem, and pivot when we get new information. Going forward, this means we want to pursue interesting projects that meet a few general desiderata. Our volunteers, partners, and collaborators are enthusiastic about the project. We believe that pursuing the project won't lead to a net increase in existential risks from AI. We'll check for this even if the project is ostensibly a project that will greatly increase our understanding of AI alignment. The project is something that EAI is better equipped to do than anyone else in the space, or the project seems interesting or important, but neglected by the broader community. In order to pull this off, we aim to stay on top of both the latest developments in AI and alignment research. We'll also carefully consider new projects before we embark on or allocate resources for them. Problems we are interested in and research we are doing right now Given the current state AI landscape, there are a few directions that we find especially interesting. We'd love to collaborate with others to make progress on these issues. Interpretability work Interpretability work, especially with current models, seems like a very tractable and scalable research direction. It seems especially easy for current ML researchers to pick up and make progress on it. EAI is well equipped to enable this kind of research, especially for larger language models that more closely resemble the ones we see in modern production systems. This is arguably where most of our recent eff...

This week on the show we are visiting with Rebecca Cleman, executive director of Electronic Arts Intermix. EAI has of coursed already come up on the show many times, and recently in episode 54 we visited with their director of preservation and media collections – today we will be going deeper into this history and evolution of EAI, and getting a look behind the scenes of an organization that has been incredibly central to the history of video art, and incredibly impactful for countless artists. At EAI Rebecca has built a long and rewarding career of working with and collaborating artists – starting years ago focused on their distribution program, sitting down with artists and facilitating the hard work to ensure that their work made it into the hands of curators, art history professors classrooms, and ultimately in front of your eyeballs in a way that honored the artist's vision and intentions. In 2019 Rebecca stepped up as executive director, and in just a few short years has already left an unmistakable imprint on the organization, stewarding EAI through a move of their HQ, growth of their team, and really doing some important work to think through what enabling distribution means in an age where artists have infinite means at their own fingertips. Rebecca's own professional journey is a great story and is just bursting with tales of the evolution of the art world in NYC, and life-long relationships with artists that she has built over time. Today's episode is all about the impact we can have when we make informed, ethical choices. It can be nearly impossible as a consumer to know where your clothes are coming from and to ensure that they were ethically and sustainably produced, from the spinner of the cloth to the dyer of the fabric to the person sewing the garment together. This is why Dr. Robert Handfield and Dr. MD Rejaul Hasan of North Carolina State University Poole College of Management are creating an Ethical Apparel Index, which will create transparency around apparel manufacturing for both consumers and investors. They're hoping the EAI will promote human rights in the garment supply chain around the world. This week we're visiting with media conservator and conservator Caroline Gil Rodríguez, who last year became director of preservation and media collections at the Electronic Arts Intermix. EAI played an incredibly pivotal role in cementing video art's place in history, and there Caroline is doing exciting work not only to safeguard their important collection, but also to help shape and rethink what role a place like EAI plays within the broader time-based media conservation ecosystem today, many decades after the organizations founding. In our chat we hear about Caroline's vibrant professional journey, and the incredible array of positions she has held across many different contexts within the moving image preservation world – from handling nitrate film, preserving Catalonia's legacy of silent film – to assessing software based works of art at the Museum of Modern Art and the MET. Our chat with Caroline further expands the global map we've been building on the show of time-based media conservation practice, as we hear all about her origins and early professional years in Puerto Rico. Tune in to hear Caroline's story! At the time we're releasing this episode Puerto Rico is reeling from the devastation of hurricane Fiona. In this episode of Mold Talks Docs, Michael Rubino sits down with Dr. Lauren Tessier, a Naturopathic Physician, mold illness specialist, and awareness advocate to discuss her experience in the field and her passion for helping people who are suffering from chronic illnesses due to toxic environments.Dr. Lauren Tessier is a Naturopathic Physician licensed by the state of Vermont. Her practice, Life After Mold, uses a patient-centered approach to help those suffering from mold-related illness recover. Her approach is informed by her Naturopathic Medical education, in combination with Functional and Integrative Medicine. As a Shoemaker Certified Physician, she specializes in the treatment of Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) as a result of exposure to mold and water-damaged buildings. She also specializes in the treatment of non-CIRS mold-related illness: mycotoxicosis, mold allergy and etc.She travels around the United States, giving lectures regarding mold illness, and she operates as an indoor environmental health advisor for various companies. Additionally, she is the current President of ISEAI; a nonprofit dedicated to the advancement of medical knowledge surrounding Environmentally Acquired Illness, or EAI.In this episode, they dive into:1:30: Dr. Tessier explains how she got into the realm of medicine and treating mold illness. Her journey took her through the Shoemaker process, noticing how prevalent this issue is, creating treatments geared towards these affected patients, and joining ISEAI.5:15: Dr. Tessier reveals how close mold toxicity is to her heart, including personal experiences and negative reactions from family members.7:40: Dr. Tessier details how prevalent she believes mold toxicity and exposure are, and the growing awareness people are beginning to have about this issue. As she said, even the CDC is shining a light on how much this can negatively impact the health of those living in toxic spaces that have water damage and contamination.12:00: Dr. Tessier explains how a paradigm shift is needed to bring greater awareness to water-damaged buildings, toxic environments, and chronic illness. From science to insurance coverage, the lack of representation and evidence is directly impacting affected individuals. One of the main issues, she said, is the difficulty in analyzing and creating scientific studies because no one wants to make individuals sick.18:00: Dr. Tessier details a few literature pieces that go against the idea of why mold exposure can impact autoimmunity and the flaws in their argument.23:30: Dr. Tessier goes through what it will take for change to occur and for the impact of mold exposure to be taken seriously. Insurance companies, in particular, have a fantastic opportunity to spearhead the initiative to provide better protection for individuals impacted by mold growth. 28:30: Dr. Tessier explains why individuals cannot heal in the environment that's making them sick in the first place. For those who can't, she details a few things people can do to help reduce exposure and the importance of not trying to seek perfection.34:00: Dr. Tessier goes through the steps an individual should take if they're suffering from mold exposure and toxicity. She said that you should document all of your symptoms so that a medical professional will have a more clear picture of what's going on in your body and use this to help determine a diagnosis. She then further explains how she helps treat her clients and the steps she takes to detox their bodies.48:00: Dr. Tessier explains one main thing she hopes people will take away from this discussion.Learn more about Dr. Lauren Tessier:https://www.lifeaftermold.com/dr-lauren-tessierInstagram: @lifeaftermoldMichael Rubinohttps://www.themoldmedic.com/https://www.homecleanse.com Instagram: @t

When you know that you need to hire someone, what do you look for? How do you know if the person you are interviewing is a good fit? What does your hiring process look like? In today's market, do you still find it easy for you to find the right person for an open position? If hiring the right person is something that you are struggling with, then this episode is for you. My lab partner today, Chris Bellizzi, is someone who has been coaching business owners for years on this topic, and this is something he is very passionate about. Chris Bellizzi started his career in the Water Treatment industry fresh out of college. After graduating with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1994 from the University of Washington, he went on to work at NALCO. He started as a Sales Representative, and was promoted to District Manager three times and eventually became the Regional Manager in the middle market business sector at NALCO. Currently, Chris is the General Manager at EAI Water and the Managing Partner at ApHinity. ApHinity from EAI is a brand of technologies based on the science of chemical affinity. The technologies ApHinity offers play a critical role in the challenging water conservation, reuse, and recycling environments of today. Chris is also a Certified Legionella Water Safety and Management Specialist and a Certified Water Treater. Chris and his wife Elsa have four daughters - two of whom are now working in the water industry (not for Chris!), and he loves being able to “talk shop” with them. If you are a Water Treatment company owner or a hiring manager, this episode is for you! Chris will share with us why building trust and delivering results are the foundations of finding the right people for your company, the 10 traits that he looks for when interviewing someone, why setting expectations is important, and how perpetuating the OKG (our kind-of-guy / our-kind-of-gal) mentality made him and his team better Water Treaters! Bottom line: Chris Bellizzi will share with us his keys to hiring the best people for open positions at your company. Your roadside friend, as you travel from client to client. -Trace Timestamps: Why the water treatment industry is the best industry for people who love to learn [00:54] Thinking On Water With James [06:55] Promoting Legionella Awareness Month in August and other industry events [08:15] Finding the right people is difficult [11:23] Introducing Chris Bellizzi, the General Manager at EAI Water and the Managing Partner at ApHinity [14:02] Why building trust and delivering results are the foundations of finding the right people [18:49] Where to find candidates and the 10 traits to look for when interviewing candidates [22:00] The art of hiring slowly [43:21] Setting expectations [50:33] Perpetuating the OKG (Our-Kind-of-Guy / Our-Kind-of-Gal) mentality [55:04] Lightning round questions [1:03:57] Thinking On Water With James: In this week's episode, we're thinking about how to properly store pH probes. Why is pH probe storage important? What can happen if stored improperly? Can a pH probe be stored dry? Can it be stored in city water or distilled water? What about storing it in a pH 4, 7, or 10 buffer solution? Why would one be better than another? Is there a storage solution designed for pH probes? How might the storage solution be applied to the rubber cover often used to protect probes between uses? Take this week to think about your pH probe and what proper storage means to its accuracy and lifespan. Quotes: “I was able to become a District Manager at a very young age, and it forced me to learn how to run teams and grapple with the issue of hiring at a very early age.” - Chris Bellizzi “What are the core values that clients really buy from over the long term? Number 1, they buy trust, number 2, they buy results.” - Chris Bellizzi “Credibility + Reliability + Intimacy ÷ Self-Focus = Trust.” - Chris Bellizzi “The non-negotiable traits I look for in an interview are people with low self-ego, high-integrity, high emotional intelligence, someone who cares, and a passion for mechanical and chemical things. The negotiables are work ethic, someone that got your back, social leadership, competitive drive, an aptitude for mechanical and chemical things.” - Chris Bellizzi “There is no one solution in Water Treatment; there are a variety of ways to get from Point A to Point Z.” - Chris Bellizzi “In the Water Treatment Industry, people that are successful are those that are very comfortable initiating the relationship.” - Chris Bellizzi “The longer the interview process, the better. The art is in managing your expectations as the hiring manager and the interviewee's expectations, and not losing people along the way.” - Chris Bellizzi “Prioritize hiring the right values and behaviors over experience and booking business.” - Chris Bellizzi “The Water Treatment Industry should never be boring. It comes with its built-in alarm, and that alarm is if you ever feel bored, you are doing this job wrong.” - Trace Blackmore “Life is too short. Do something you love, you'll never work another day in your life.” - Trace Blackmore Connect with Chris Bellizzi: Phone: (949) 939-7162 Email: cbellizzi@eaiwater.com Website: eaiwater.com LinkedIn: in/chris-bellizzi-a08b6863 Links Mentioned: The Demographic Drought - presentation by Author and Economist Ron Hetrick 173 The One With the Exit Plan Coach Herb Brooks Coach Chris Petersen The EntreLeadership Podcast The Every Man Ministries Podcast The Rising Tide Mastermind Submit a Show Idea AWT (Association of Water Technologies) Events: August is Legionella Awareness Month Smart Water Summit – August 29 to 31 in San Antonio, Texas Water Infrastructure Conference – September 11 to 14 in Portland, Oregon StormCon 2022 – September 26 to 28 in National Harbor, Maryland Books Mentioned: The Ideal Team Player by Patrick Lencioni Revenue Growth Engine by Darell Amy
Zebra Technologies is one of the largest suppliers of barcode printing and scanning devices globally. In 1991, Zebra introduced 2D barcode scanners followed by Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tracking tags, rugged mobile computers, tablets, and wearable devices for increased inventory and asset visibility. Lately, it's been acquiring companies in software, robotics, AI, data capture, and real-time location systems, all to help it transform from a traditional hardware-centric company to a software solutions organization to realize a vision it calls enterprise asset intelligence (EAI) at the edge. Today, Zebra has customers in manufacturing, retail, healthcare, transportation, logistics, and the public sector, with over 10,000 partners across 100 countries. In today's episode, Chris Hood sits down with Janet Kennedy, Vice President, North America Regions at Google Cloud, and Tom Bianculli, SVP and CTO at Zebra Technologies, to go behind the scenes of this Transformation Debrief conversation to learn how Zebra Technologies has navigated these changes.

Ela abre o jogo e conta se realmente já fez Malhação, sobre como é ser a presidenta do Fã Clube da Narcisa Tamborindeguy e sobre os próximos passos da sua carreira depois de bombar na internet. Ficou curioso? Então prepare seu lanche e dê o play no Só 1 Minutinho. #So1Minutinho #SÓ1M
Dr. Scott Taylor is the President of the Expanded Awareness Institute. EAI helps people curious about near-death experiences explore what that experience means to them and to our culture as a whole. Dr Taylor has served as President and Executive Director of The Monroe Institute. He has been a trainer for The Monroe Institute since 1985. He is an expert in the use of binaural beat technology to achieve and hold expanded states of consciousness. He is also the author and voice of six best-selling CDs of guided meditations on near-death experiences in his Into the Light series. He is a spiritual teacher, speaker and researcher on near-death experiences. Dr Taylor is also an experiencer and in the show recounts his own moving ‘shared death experience'. We go on to discuss, what happens in NDE's, what in fact is ‘the light' and how NDE's are malleable, participatory experiences. In the Plus show we get into dimension sliding, folklore analogs for the NDA entity experience. We also discuss the strangest story he ever heard in this territory and finally the importance of meditation in order to be focused when in an expanded state of consciousness. He reflects on how some of the frightening things people experience are metaphors designed to get our attention and how meditators tend to do better in these cases. Dr Taylor then goes into detail on how binaural beats can be used to induce the same state as experiences during NDEs. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Preserving and continuing alignment research through a severe global catastrophe, published by A donor on March 6, 2022 on LessWrong. [Epistemic status: Shallow dive into research questions, backed by some years of on-and-off thinking about this kind of plan.] Introduction There is some chance that civilization will cease to function before we hit an intelligence explosion. If it does, it would be good to preserve existing alignment research for future generations who might rebuild advanced technology, and ideally have safe havens ready for current and future researchers to spend their lives adding to that pool of knowledge. This might delay capabilities research by many decades, centuries, or longer while allowing basic theoretical alignment research to continue, and so be a potential Yudkowskian positive model violation for which we should prepare. Setting this infrastructure up is a massively scalable intervention, and one that should likely be tackled by people who are not already on the researcher career path. It would have been good to get started some years ago given recent events, but now is the second best time to plant a tree. Preserving alignment knowledge through a global catastrophe What data do we want to store? Thankfully, the EleutherAI people are working on a dataset of all alignment research. It's still a WIP and contributions to the scripts to collect it are welcome, so if you're a programmer looking for a shovel ready way to help with this then consider submitting a PR. How do we want to store it? My shallow dive into this uncovered these options: We could print it out on paper Lifetime: 500+ years in good conditions (might depend significantly on paper and ink quality, more research needed). Vacuum sealing it with low humidity seems like it would help significantly. Pros: Totally human readable. Microsoft's Project Silica is the longest lasting option I could find Lifetime: 10000+ years Cons: Would require high levels of technology to read it back. I'm not seeing an option to buy the machines required to write new archives and expect them to be very advanced/expensive, so this would be limited to storing pre-collapse research. CDs could be a minimalist option Lifetime: Maybe 50 years if stored in good conditions Pros: Good ability for researchers to explore the information on computers while those last) Cons: It's very plausible that a severe GCR would set us back far enough that we'd not regain CD reading technology before they decayed so they aren't a full solution. The Arctic World Archive seems worth including in the portfolio Lifetime: 1000+ years Pros: It's a pretty straightforward case of turning money into archives Cons: Not very accessible in the meantime The DOTS system (a highly stable tape-based storage medium) might be a strong candidate, if it is buyable. Lifetime: 200-2000+ years Pros: Human readable or digital archives. Each has advantages, so some combination of them might be ideal. Where do we store it? Having many redundant backups seem advisable, preferably protected by communities which can last centuries or in locations which will not be disturbed for a very long time. Producing "alignment backup kits" to send out and offering microgrants to people all around the world to place them in secure locations would achieve this. We'd likely want basic (just pre-collapse work) and advanced (capable of adding archives for a long time post-collapse) options. If you'd like to take on the challenge of preparing these kits, storing an archive, or coordinating things, please join the Alignment After A GCR Discord (AAAG). I'm happy to collaborate and give some seed funding. If you want to help collect and improve the archive files, #accelerating-alignment on EAI is the place to go.
