Can't Hurt Me Full Book ReviewMore Content On Bookey Best App For Book Summary. Each time we encounter what appears to be an insurmountable challenge, our first instinct is usually to give up. Not the author of this book, David Goggins, who has an insatiable appetite for pain – not only does he deliberately seek out challenges that stretch his endurance to breaking point, he would attempt them again and again till he not only conquers them, but does so better than everyone else. He believes everyone should callous their minds, give up victim's mentality and eventually realize their maximum capacity. In this book, Goggins provides us with a candid account of all the hardships that he has conquered, from his abusive childhood to his brutal military training, in order to live life on his own terms. Overview | Chapter 1Hi, welcome to Bookey. Today we will unlock the book Can't Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds by David Goggins. In this book, Goggins shares with us how he turned his life around and overcame one obstacle after another by mastering his mind. Growing up, Goggins did not enjoy the typical carefree childhood that many of his peers did. Instead, he and his mother and brother lived under the tyranny of his abusive father, who exposed them to a world of violence and pain from a young age. This affected him for a long time. Young Goggins was unmotivated and aimless, with a rage within him which continued to eat him from the inside. Although he tried out for the Air Force at one point, he lacked the tenacity to complete his training and eventually dropped out on medical grounds. Struck by his own failure, he abandoned his health by binge-eating, and resigned himself to a mediocre life of working in pest control. All this started to change when he happened to watch a television programme about Navy SEALs, which captured on camera the most notorious part of SEAL training – Hell Week. Instantly, Goggins was reminded of all the aspirations he once had, and decided it was time to pull himself together. From that point onwards, he never looked back, enduring three Hell Weeks to finally graduate top of his class as a Navy SEAL, and thereafter going on to set new records in long-distance running and endurance sports. Goggins turned his life around through what he calls “mastering the mind”. At any point when he felt like giving up, he would confront his own weaknesses, give himself a good scolding, and push himself to embrace his pain. In this book, he candidly shares the hardships he has endured throughout his life as well as the strategies he used to gain mastery over his own mind and successfully conquer the odds, thereby inspiring us to do the same.

Entrepreneur Jesse Itzler will try almost anything. His life is about being bold and risky. So when Jesse felt himself drifting on autopilot, he hired a rather unconventional trainer to live with him for a month-an accomplished Navy SEAL widely considered to be "the toughest man on the planet"! Living With a Seal is like a buddy movie if it starred the Fresh Prince of Bel- Air. . .and Rambo. Jesse is about as easy-going as you can get. SEAL is. . . not. At turns hilarious and inspiring, Living With a Seal ultimately shows you the benefits of stepping out of your comfort zone. Jesse then partnered with Zico coconut water, which he and his partner sold to The Coca-Cola Company. He's a former rapper on MTV and wrote and performed the NBA's Emmy Award-winning "I Love This Game" music campaign and the popular New York Knicks anthem "Go NY Go." When he's not running ultra-marathons, eating vegan food or being a dad to his four kids, Jesse can be found at the NBA's Atlanta Hawks games, where he's an owner of the team. He is married to Spanx founder Sara Blakely. IntroductionIn https://geni.us/goggins-free-audiobook (Can't Hurt Me), Goggins reveals a path that anyone can follow to push past limits, eliminate fear, and live life to the fullest. For Goggins, childhood was far from innocently playing outside without a care in the world. Instead, he experienced trauma from an abusive father and extreme prejudice and poverty in rural America. Statistically, Goggins was going nowhere and was destined for a life of depression and poverty. But, he defied all odds through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work. No longer was he a depressed, overweight young man with no future. By committing himself to weight loss and improving his test scores, Goggins became a U.S. Armed Forces icon. On top of that, he is now one of the world's top endurance athletes. He has become the only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller. He didn't stop there, though. Goggins set records in extreme endurance events and has been named The Fittest (Real) Man in America. “You are in danger of living a life so comfortable and soft, that you will die without ever realizing your true potential.” - David Goggins The Early Life of Goggins Goggins' Father Goggins was born in New York in 1975. He did not have a typical carefree childhood. Instead of playing outside with friends, Goggins was controlled by his abusive father. His father, Trunnis, was a self-made businessman who owned a disco. Instead of hiring paid workers, Trunnis would force his family to work every night of the week. Goggins was already working at the rink by the age of six. Even at this age, his father would force him to work until midnight. Instead of taking him home, Trunnis would often leave him to sleep in the office. Goggins would hardly sleep at night, though, as the disco was loud and would stay open until the early hours of the morning. On top of forced labor, Goggins' dad was extremely violent. Goggins and his mother fell victim to domestic abuse, often for the smallest things. For example, Goggins once contracted a nasty ear infection. His loving mother took him to the hospital. But, Trunnis hated the family spending money, even when his children were ill. After returning, Goggins witnessed his father beating his mother senseless with a belt. When he intervened, his father beat him too. He had to attend school, hiding the bruises he had been given.... DISCLAIMER: This is an unofficial summary and analysis. I personally have had PMDD for 15 years and have a partner with whom I have after years and months of trial and error we have created My signature Transformational Trauma Techniques. My TTT techniques help you cope with your PMDD symptoms, stop the cycle of wanting to break up with your partner every month and have the supportive relationship that us PMDD Champions Desire and Deserve. My signature Transformational Trauma Techniques. Let me be clear, Trauma does not cause PMDD but PMDD definitely causes Trauma. So lets jump right into this episode. Today I will be teaching you “How to Keep the Peace when youre in Hell week” First lets address what Hell week is specifically. This is a term widely known in the PMDD community as the Weeks that PMDD is active in your life which is right after ovulation and leading up to your period. Essentially the symptoms do not subside until you get your period, which provides the well deserved relief from the symptoms. During Hell week your symptoms could range fromDifficulty concentratingDepressionAnxietySadnessFeeling of hopelessnessAnger or irritabilityLethargyLoss of interest in normal activitiesFood cravingsInsomnia or hypersomniaMisophonia- sensitivity to noiseSuicidal Thoughts1. Know that your partner is going to trigger you2. Acknowledge your triggers in regards to your partner- for me it is snoring and noises such as closing drawers and doors, something he normally does but during hell week it seems almost intentional and I get resentful because when I am suffering I just want peace and silence so every sound is like a slap in the face. My partner feels like he has to walk on eggshalls around me and when I am out of PMDD I feel bad about it.3. Know what it feels like for you to be emotionally triggered. This is different for everyone. For me, I can feel my heart begin to race and I feel my body heat up and my jaw gets clinched. It took me time and consciousness to be able to stop myself in the moment and recognize what I was feeling and actually labling it. How you feel when you are triggered is systematic, meaning it will occur everytime you are triggered and that is your cue4. Once you have identified that you are triggered next we will go over How to Handle Your Emotional triggers while keeping the Peace in Your relationship!

We are always on the lookout for fun and unique stories to illustrate important life lessons. And recently we stumbled across a video online of Jesse Itzler sharing his experience inviting a Navy Seal to live with his family for 31 days and following his every command. Now, here’s the catch. Jesse did this voluntarily. And the man he invited is none other than David Goggins -- who many regard as the world’s toughest man. David is the only member of the U.S. Armed Forces to complete SEAL training (including two Hell Weeks), the U.S. Army Ranger School (where he graduated as Enlisted Honor Man) and Air Force Tactical Air Controller training. David also once held the Guinness record for most pull-ups in a single day and has run over 60 ultra-marathons. Why would Jesse (the owner of the NBA Atlanta Hawks who has enough money to never have to work another day in his life) decide to invite David into his home and subject himself to the most intense workouts imaginable? Well in this episode, Eva shares some of the hilarious stories from Jesse’s experience, and most importantly, explains WHY Jesse made this decision. This is a really fun episode that you will love listening to as a family, and Eva even issues a mini-challenge at the end! For show notes, please visit DreamBigPodcast.com/167
Cade Courtley was born in Columbus, Ohio and raised in Boulder, Colorado where he spent much of his early life in the outdoors. He graduated from the University of San Diego with a degree in Business Administration and was commissioned (ROTC) into the United States Navy as an Ensign. A standout from the beginning of his military career as a Naval Officer, Courtley was the Class Leader in his BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition/ SEAL) training. After 19 months, two Hell Weeks, broken left leg (twice), a broken right leg, and a fractured skull, LT Courtley graduated (CLASS 202) and became a Navy SEAL. He was then chosen to attend the elite SEAL Sniper school, privilege only given to a select few. His strong background in military Special Operations made him the obvious choice to Host and Produce the Spike TV/Discovery International original series “Surviving Disaster” (2010) that to date has aired in over 150 countries. Author can now be added to Courtley’s list of accomplishments when the folks at Simon & Schuster decided to publish SEAL Survival Guide “A Navy SEAL’s Secrets to Surviving Any Disaster.” (2012) As well as Host of the original TV series “America Unplugged” (2014) Cade is also the founder of Victory Coffee. Favorite Success Quote “If it was easy everyone could do it” “You have to get your ass kicked every once in awhile” Key Points 1. You Need to Constantly be Challenged One of the reasons that Navy SEALs are the best of the best is because they are always being challenged and forced to grow. Obvious from their motto “The only easy day was yesterday” Seals believe that to be the best, you have to push yourself beyond your perceived limits, and they do this every single day of training. Whether or not you want to be a SEAL, the lesson remains the same. Men need challenge, they need adventure, they need to do something other than sit in a damn cubicle. Start challenging yourself today. Get outside, exercise, take a cold shower, give up a bad habit, learn a martial art; do whatever you need to do to get out of your comfort zone and stretch yourself to new limits. 2. You have to Find a Strong Why At BUD/s there is an attrition rate of nearly 80%, meaning that for every 10 recruits who show up on day one of training, 2 will graduate. Although there doesn’t appear to be much rhyme or reason as to who makes it and who doesn’t physically, the one thing that all successful SEALs have in common is a strong why. You have to have a strong enough reason why you are doing what you are doing to get you through the inevitable shitty times. Whether you are in entrepreneurship, fitness, family or war, you have to have a reason for what you are doing and it has to be strong. 3. Train in Peace so You Don’t Bleed in War One of the core principles of SEAL training is to sweat hard in peace, so you bleed less in war. In layman’s terms, this means that you have to put in the work before the shit hits the fan. You must develop yourself into a grounded, self reliant man before you meet the woman of your dreams, you must save up and be financially intelligent before recession hits, you must work hard at your fitness before some sort of physical disaster arises. Prepare now so that you have peace of mind later. 4. Find Your Passion and Follow It Life is freaking short. Too damn short to waste in a cubicle doing something that is uninspiring and boring. Find your passion and follow it, because God only knows when your last day is. You might not have another tomorrow and the worst thing in the world would be to get to the other side and think to yourself “Damn I really blew it, did I even matter?” Do yourself a favor. Follow your passion and make your life count.
Do you challenge yourself to push past limitations or do you avoid them? It you truly want to succeed in life and business, you have to have the courage to face your fears head on. If you’ve never heard of David Goggins, just picture a superhero story come to real life. After a devastating childhood that left him broken and lacking ambition, everything changed. He set his sights on becoming a Navy SEAL, and in the process became the only individual in U.S. military history to go through Air Force Tactical Air Control Party Training, Army Ranger school and 3 “Hell Weeks.” He not only accomplished his goal of becoming a Navy SEAL, but then went on to earn a reputation as one of the world’s premier endurance athletes. I was extremely proud to introduce David and his incredible life story to our audience at the 2017 Success Summit. Now, as his new book “Can’t Hurt Me” continues to dominate the Amazon Charts, he joined me for this fascinated interview. Learn more: https://tfi.media/2ML7cyb
About the Author David Goggins is a retired Navy SEAL and is the only member of the U.S. Armed Forces to complete SEAL training (including two Hell Weeks), the U.S. Army Ranger School (where he graduated as Enlisted Honor Man) and Air Force Tactical Air Controller training. An accomplished endurance athlete, Goggins has completed over 60 ultra-marathons, triathlons, and ultra-triathlons, setting new course records and regularly placing in the top five. He once held the Guinness World Record for pull-ups completing 4,030 in 17 hours, and he’s a sought after public speaker. Over the years, he’s shared his story with hundreds of thousands of students across thecountry, numerous professional sports teams, and the staff at Fortune 500 companies. David chooses to run the toughest races and put himself through some of the hardest military training programs in the country for no other reason than to see what he’s made of. For him, physical and mental suffering are a journey of self-discovery, no other experience makes him feel more clear, focused and alive. (Source: https://davidgoggins.com/about/) About the Book David’s author bio gives a good overview of the book. The book is David’s life story from an abusive, poverty-filled childhood through his military experiences and how he turned his life sround to become the only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller. As that wasn’t enough he then went on to set records in numerous endurance events, inspiring Outside Magazine to name him “The Fittest (Real) Man in America.” The book is packed with life lessons, reflections and realisations. There’s plenty of inspiration and ass-kicking included to move you towards whatever you want to do – from fitness to career to business - and his 40% rule is one that has floated around my mind a lot since reading the book. More on that later. BIG IDEA 1 (2:40) - Anyone can do anything. David’s belief in life is that you are only limited by your own belief in yourself. In his 40% rule he explains that people only use 40% of their true potential, which means there is a huge percentage of our capabilities being wasted. Another big idea that David shared is that we need to get past and push through our fears. We are capable of so much more than we think we are and to ‘break’ the 40% rule we need to identify whether our fears are physical, mental, emotional or psychological. He shares the concept of ‘callousing your mind’ - to callous your mind the same way you do your hands when you lift weights. He used this metaphor to toughen up his mind to be able to face more challenging situations in life. BIG IDEA 2 (3:54)- Talent is not required. David credits his success to dedication and consistency - not talent. He had this realisation when he did his first 100 mile race. He looked around and saw that those who were doing a lot better than him were not those who he would think could win, showing it was a battle of the mind rather than the body. BIG IDEA 3 (4:50) - Be uncommon amongst uncommon. Find a higher talent to compete with or a bigger goal. This is about going beyond what you think is your ultimate success, keep finding other people who are doing better than you as use that as a yardstick. When David achieved his goal of getting into the SEALs, he still kept training in the same way - even though others told him he could relax as he’d ‘made it’. Being in an elite unit wasn’t enough, he wanted to be even more elite. He was dedicated, consistent and kept looking for that next challenge. He was looking to be uncommon amongst uncommon. “You have to go to war with yourself before you can find peace”David GogginsI can think of no better guest to usher in 2019 than the mighty one himself.Incontrovertibly the most inspirational person I have ever met, today David Goggins returns for his second turn on the podcast — a conversation that will catapult you into the new year with the tools and hard truth you need to chase huge dreams, shatter personal limits and transform your life wholesale.Often referred to as the hardest man alive, David is the only member of the US Armed Forces to complete SEAL training (including three Hell Weeks), the U.S. Army Ranger School (where he graduated as Enlisted Honor Man) and Air Force Tactical Air Controller Training. But David is perhaps best known for his superhuman feats of strength and ultra-endurance.After several of his friends died in a 2005 helicopter crash while deployed in Afghanistan, David honored their memory by tackling the most difficult endurance challenges on Earth to raise funds and awareness for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, which provides college scholarships and grants to the children of fallen special ops soldiers.Hence began a most unexpected yet remarkably storied athletic career as one of the world's most accomplished endurance athletes. Highlights include:* 2005: ran 100 miles in under 24 hours on no training;* 2013: world record for most pullups in a 24 hour period (4,030);* 2007: 3rd place — Badwater 135 – a 135 mile ultramarathon across Death Valley widely considered to be the world’s most difficult foot race;* 2006: 2nd place — Ultraman World Championships, a double-ironman distance race widely considered to be the world's most difficult triathlon;* 2007: 1st place — 48-Hour National Championship endurance foot race, where he ran 203.5 miles, beating the previous record by 20 miles; and* 2007 – 2016 — additional top finishes at dozens of the world's most grueling endurance races, including The HURT 100, Leadville 100, Western States & more. But David’s greatest accomplishment isn't athletic. It's self-mastery.From day one, David has faced a concatenation of seemingly insurmountable obstacles – poverty, psychological and physical abuse, obesity, learning disabilities, asthma, sickle cell anemia, and even a congenital heart defect that often left him competing — and winning — on a mere fraction of his actual physical capabilities. It's a scenario that would have buried the best of us. And yet, against all odds, David conquered them all, and ultimately found a way out. It's the story of a man who transformed pain into obsession and, phoenix-like, rose from a state of utter desperation to take complete ownership of his life and total command of his mind to manifest a most extraordinary life.David's implausible journey is laid bare in his recently released memoir, Can't Hurt Me* — one of the most honest, powerful and impactful stories of hardship, redemption and personal perseverance I have ever read. Certain books instruct. Others inspire. But it's the rare read that holds the potential to reframe your sense of personal capability and completely change your life. This book does just that — a statement I don't make lightly. I highly suggest See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Author can now be added to Courtley's list of accomplishments when the folks at Simon & Schuster decided to publish SEAL Survival Guide “A Navy SEAL's Secrets to Surviving Any Disaster.” (2012) As well as Host of the original TV series “America Unplugged” (2014) Cade is also the founder of Victory Coffee. Favorite Success Quote “If it was easy everyone could do it” “You have to get your butt kicked every once in awhile” Key Points 1. Men need challenge, they need adventure, they need to do something other than sit in a cubicle. Although there doesn't appear to be much rhyme or reason as to who makes it and who doesn't physically, the one thing that all successful SEALs have in common is a strong why. You have to have a strong enough reason why you are doing what you are doing to get you through the inevitable bad times. Whether you are in entrepreneurship, fitness, family or war, you have to have a reason for what you are doing and it has to be strong. 3. Train in Peace so You Don't Bleed in War One of the core principles of SEAL training is to sweat hard in peace, so you bleed less in war. In layman's terms, this means that you have to put in the work before the stuff hits the fan. Too darn short to waste in a cubicle doing something that is uninspiring and boring. Find your passion and follow it, because God only knows when your last day is. You might not have another tomorrow and the worst thing in the world would be to get to the other side and think to yourself “I really blew it, did I even matter?” Do yourself a favor. Follow your passion and make your life count
CHOOSE THE PATH OF MOST RESISTANCE. Do you avoid challenging yourself? If you do, you’re cheating yourself of reaching your full potential. There is so much you can learn through pain. But we want to avoid it. We want to stay in our comfort zone. Growth, though, is found in the discomfort zone. You have to have the courage to face sickness, disappointment, and discomfort. That’s why I’m so excited to share this conversation I had with someone who has mastered the art of using pain as a way to better himself: David Goggins. David Goggins is a retired Navy SEAL and is the only member of the U.S. Armed Forces to complete SEAL training (including two Hell Weeks), the U.S. Army Ranger School (where he graduated as Enlisted Honor Man) and Air Force Tactical Air Controller training. David is indisputably one of the world’s best endurance athletes. He has completed over 60 endurance races, regularly placing in the top five and taken home first place several times. David says that if don’t give yourself a way out, your body will figure out a way to persevere. We are capable of so much more than we know. Mental toughness isn’t a class, it’s a lifestyle. Learn how to change your outlook on the “bad things” that happen to you and to be excited about what you can learn through hardship on Episode 715. Some Questions I Ask: What was the hardest obstacle to overcome growing up? (16:53) What was the greatest lesson your mom taught you? (25:04) When someone’s lacking confidence, how can they gain more? (33:37) What’s your biggest insecurity? (36:21) Do you have any fears today? (1:11:52) What’s the greatest lesson your father taught you? (1:26:50) In This Episode You Will Learn: What made David apply for the Military (23:04) What David believes the key to life is (35:44) Why getting sick was the best thing that ever happened to David (37:43) About the 40 Percent Rule (38:49) How to retrain your mind when you want to seek comfort (41:10) What haunts David the most (47:33) The importance of long-term gratification (1:04:20) Why you need to be quiet with yourself to succeed (1:11:08) David’s morning routine (1:17:18)
This conversation is with David Goggins. It's real. This podcast is not for kids -- it's for adults -- who want to understand toughness and authenticity. David is clear. Very clear. He lives in true alignment. He's figured out who he is -- and he lives accordingly. Period. The odds were stacked against David ever making anything of himself. He grew up in an abusive household, barely graduated high school, and struggled with serious health issues, to name just a few of the challenges David had to overcome. In spite of all of these obstacles, David never had a “woe is me” mentality. David is the only member of the U.S. Armed Forces to complete SEAL training (including two Hell Weeks), the U.S. Army Ranger School (where he graduated as Enlisted Honor Man) and Air Force tactical air controller training. David has completed multiple ultra-marathons, triathlons, ultra-triathlons, bike races and arduous mountain ascents, setting new course records and regularly placing in the top five. His achievements made him the subject of a lead feature in Runner’s World, where he was named “Running Hero”, and Outside Magazine named him “The Fittest (Real) Man in America.” The Navy SEALs even asked him to be their poster-boy and appear in a recruiting commercial.
