This week's workout is all about pacing, form under fatigue, and dialing in your endurance one rung at a time. We kick things off with a smooth 200 at Zone 2, just to get things flowing. From there, we sharpen technique with some 6/1/6 drills and one-eyed breathing to help you stay long and balanced in the water. Main Set 1 x 500 Build to Z4 (20 sec) 1 x 400 Build to Z4 (20 sec) 2 x 300 @ Z4 w/Paddles (20 sec) 2 x 200 @ Z2 (20 sec) 5 x 100 @ Desc to Z4 w/Paddles (20 sec) 125 Alternating Drill Choice/Free by 25 (25 sec) Cool Down Balance of time @ Z2 and/or repeat warmup drills as time permits. Session tip: As the intervals get shorter and your rest gets more generous, resist the urge to get sloppy. Hold that form, stay efficient, and finish as strong as you started. Swim ladders are sneaky good—they build aerobic strength while training your brain to stay focused when fatigue sets in. Climb smart, descend sharper. Fun Segment: Triathlon Would You Rather – Disney Edition! “Okay folks, it's time for a magical twist on our favorite game—Triathlon Would You Rather: Disney Edition! We're diving headfirst into the world of castles, sidekicks, and talking animals… but with a triathlon twist. Closing Line: “So…to our listeners, what's your pick? And remember, there are no wrong answers—just magical ones. Share your choices with us on Instagram, Facebook, or tag a Disney-obsessed training partner who needs to hear this!” "All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them." – Walt Disney Closing: Before we close, I want to wish you (April) good luck at tomorrow's “The Bear” MTB race by Rattler Racing. The ONE Thing provides a powerful framework for busy athletes looking to balance training, work, and life while staying laser-focused on what truly moves the needle. His insights can help endurance athletes simplify their approach, build consistency, and achieve breakthrough results—both on and off the racecourse.. Get Gritty Tip: The principles outlined in *The ONE Thing* can be incredibly effective when applied to triathlon training. Here are five ways they align: 1. **Prioritize Your Focus**: The book emphasizes focusing on one thing that matters most. For triathletes, this could mean identifying the weakest discipline (swim, bike, or run) and devoting extra time and energy to improving it. Alternatively, it might mean prioritizing recovery or strength training if those are key to your performance. 2. **Set Clear Goals**: The ONE Thing encourages setting specific goals that align with your long-term vision. For triathletes, this could mean planning a race calendar and defining what success looks like—whether it's completing your first triathlon or achieving a personal best in your next Ironman. 3. **Time Blocking for Training**: Keller and Papasan emphasize time blocking—dedicating undistracted time to your priority. Triathlon training involves balancing three sports, so time blocking ensures you consistently make space for swim, bike, and run sessions, as well as rest and nutrition planning. 4. **Leverage the Domino Effect**: The concept of tackling the most impactful task first can be applied to triathlon preparation. For example, improving your swimming technique could have a domino effect, boosting your confidence and setting a positive tone for the rest of your training sessions. 5. **Combat Multitasking**: The book warns against multitasking, advocating instead for deep focus on one task at a time. In triathlon training, this could mean being fully present in each workout—focusing on your stroke during swimming, your cadence during cycling, or your form during running—rather than allowing distractions to dilute your effort. Triathlon training requires discipline and strategic planning, and *The ONE Thing* offers a framework to enhance your focus and efficiency. TriDot Workout/Drill of the Week: Bike Power Intervals This week's TriDot Workout of the Week is all about *Power Intervals*—and learning how to generate strong, sustainable watts using two different techniques. After a solid warmup with some Z4 primers, you'll hit two rounds of 4-minute efforts at Zone 4 with a low cadence of 70 rpm, emphasizing raw force. Then you'll dial it back to Zone 2 and hold 90 rpm to recover. Power equals force times speed, and this session trains both sides of the equation—so you build strength *and* speed control. Keep those Zone 4 intervals crisp and clean, and remember: low rpm = grind, high rpm = spin, both equal *power*. Ready to break it down? Warmup 10 min @ Z2 with 2 x 30 sec (30 sec) Spinups and 3 x 1 min (1 min) @ Z4 Main Set 2 x 4 min @ Z4 ~70 rpm (2 min) Balance of time @ Z2 Session Note When performing Power Intervals, the hard efforts are all at Z4 but you'll be producing that power using two different techniques. Power is force times speed (cadence). During the initial Z4 efforts, you'll emphasize force production to produce power by pedalling at 70 rpms. During the latter Z4 efforts, you'll shift emphasis to producing power with a higher cadence by pedalling at 90 rpms. Your rest periods between harder efforts are at Z2. Perform Z2 efforts @ 90 rpms. Perform Z4 efforts @ 70 or 90 rpms as directed. And there you have it—your Power Intervals session designed to help you crush your bike splits by training both force and speed. Get after it, stay focused on your cadence zones, and remember: every stroke counts when you're building power with purpose. Now… let's shift gears—literally and figuratively. It's time for one of my favorite parts of the show, where we trade sweat for smarts and see just how well you know your triathlon gear. This week, we're kicking off a brand-new game I'm calling… “Guess That Gear!” Here's how it works: I'll read a few clues about a piece of triathlon equipment—could be from swim, bike, run, or transition—and it's up to you, Rich (and all of you listening), to figure out what it is before I give the answer. Ready to test your triathlon IQ? Let's play Guess That Gear! Fun Segment: Life in the fast lane!!! “Guess That Gear!” – Triathlon Edition Segment Intro (Script): Alright, triathletes, it's time for our fun segment and I've got another completely brand new one for you—It's called, “Guess That Gear!” I'm going to describe a piece of triathlon gear—could be something from the swim, bike, run, or transition—and it's up to you, Rich (and our audience) to figure out what it is… How It Works: I'll give a series of clues about a piece of triathlon-related gear, equipment, or accessory—starting vague and getting more specific. Round 1 Clues: I'm lightweight but can make or break your race. I'm often strapped, clipped, or buckled. Lose me in transition and you're disqualified. What am I? Answer: Helmet Round 2 Clues: I'm packed with calories but not flavor. You'll probably get sick of me around mile 40. I can be fruity, salty, or even a complete mystery… What am I? Answer: Energy gel Round 3 Clues: I'm often forgotten until it's too late. I can mean the difference between crying and cruising. You probably applied me in T1… if you remembered). Answer: Body Glide / Anti-Chafe Balm / Sunblock Round 4 Clues: I sit quietly under pressure. I'm small, but without me, you're not going far. I love CO₂, but I'm not a soda can. Answer: Spare tube Round 5 Clues: I make you look like a superhero... or a sausage. I'm built for speed, not bathroom breaks. If you forget me on race morning, you're going to panic. Answer: Tri suit Okay, that last one's a rite of passage. You haven't really lived until you've tried to wiggle out of one of these in a porta-potty at mile 56. Closing: Thanks again for listening this week. Please be sure to follow us @303Triathlon and @grit2greatnessendurance and of course go to iTunes and give us a rating and a comment. We'd really appreciate it! Stay tuned, train informed, and enjoy the endurance journey!

Trigger warning for talk of disordered eating behaviors and weight control. Feel free to skip this episode or fast-forward from 34:00 to 43:45. This episode of the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast is with professional Ironman triathlete Dede Griesbauer. Dede shares her remarkable story from an NCAA DI swimming career to working on Wall Street. Over a decade later, she returned to competitive sport and became a professional Ironman triathlete aged 35. At 52 years old, Dede won the Ultraman World Championships, a multi-day triathlon event, and is still performing at an elite level now. We discuss tips for career longevity and how Dede has maintained her health and love for sport throughout. Dede's events, Ironman and Ultraman triathlons, are long endurance events requiring considerable fuel before, during and after training and racing. We dive deep into fueling during exercise, comparing real food and sports nutrition products like gels and chews, creating a fueling plan, and problem solving GI issues. Dede shares advice for meeting your nutrition needs on a busy schedule, as well as how she uses food trackers to her benefit. We highlight how, with the support of a professional, trackers can support performance nutrition goals. This is not something I recommend my clients do because the risk of negative impacts is too high. Dede opens up about the negative food, body and weight messaging she received in college, and how her mindset has totally shifted to not monitor her weight, instead fueling for health and performance. Next Level Soul with Alex Ferrari: A Spirituality & Personal Growth Podcast
If you need some inspiration in your life this is the episode for you. We have on the show podcast, author and one of the fittest men in the world Rich Roll. At age 40, and after years of struggling with drugs, alcohol, and unhealthy living, Rich dedicated his diet to plants and his body to purposeful action. Just two years later, he began clocking top finishes at Ultraman World Championships and leading a community of others looking to transform their lives.A graduate of Stanford University and Cornell Law School, Rich is a 55-year old, accomplished vegan ultra-endurance athlete and former entertainment attorney turned full-time wellness & plant-based nutrition advocate, popular public speaker, husband, father of 4 and inspiration to people worldwide as a transformative example of courageous and healthy living. In 2012, Rich became a #1 bestselling author with the publication of his inspirational memoir Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World's Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself.Taking up where the book leaves off, in 2013 Rich launched the wildly popular Rich Roll Podcast, which persistently sits atop the iTunes top-10 lists. In 2014, Rich & his wife Julie Piatt published the bestselling cookbook and lifestyle primer, The Plantpower Way: Whole Food Plant-Based Recipes And Guidance For The Whole Family. In May 2010, Rich and his ultra-colleague Jason Lester accomplished an unprecedented feat of staggering endurance many said was not possible. Something they call the EPIC5 CHALLENGE– an odyssey that entailed completing 5 ironman-distance triathlons on 5 islands of Hawaii in under a week. Commencing on Kauai, they travelled to Oahu, Molokai and Maui before finishing on the Big Island, following the course of the Ironman World Championships on the Kona coast. In addition, Rich has been a top finisher at the 2008 and 2009 Ultraman World Championships in Hawaii. Considered by many to be one of world's most daunting and grueling endurance races on the planet, Ultraman is a 3-day / 320 mile double-ironman distance triathlon that circumnavigates the entire Big Island. Limited to only 35 carefully selected invitation-only participants from all over the world, Day 1 involves a 6.2 mile ocean swim immediately followed by a 90 mile cross-country cycling race. Day 2 is a 170 mile cycling race. And the event culminates on Day 3 with a 52 mile double marathon run on the searing hot lava fields of the Kona coast. But what makes Rich truly remarkable is that less than two years prior to his first Ultraman, he didn't even own a bike, let alone race one.Although he competed as a butterfly swimmer at Stanford University in the late 80's, Rich's career was cut short by struggles with drugs and alcohol — an addiction that led him astray for the next decade, alienating friends, colleagues and family, landing him in jails, institutions and ultimately rehab at age 31. Although sober, Rich soon found himself 50 pounds overweight; the furthest thing from fit. Everything came to head on the eve of his 40th birthday. Defeated by a mere flight of stairs that left him buckled over in pain, he foresaw the almost certain heart attack looming in his near future."It was time for a major life change." – RICH ROLLThe day immediately following his staircase epiphany, Rich overhauled his diet, became a dedicated vegan, put on his running shoes and jumped back into the pool. It wasn't long before ambition took hold and his quest to participate in Ultraman slowly began. Two years later, 50 pounds lighter, and fueled by nothing but plants, he surprised the triathlon & ultra communities by not only becoming the first vegan to complete the 320-mile über-endurance event, but by finishing in the top 10 males (3rd fastest American) with the 2nd fastest swim split — all despite having never previously completed even a half-ironman distance triathlon. In 2009, Rich returned to Ultraman twice the athlete he was the year prior. Despite a stacked field, he took home first day honors with a blistering 2:21 swim victory (6th fastest of all time) and a third fastest bike leg to win the day with a 10 minute lead on the field. On Day 2 Rich suffered a serious bike crash but managed to salvage the day in 6th place overall. With an injured knee and shoulder Rich nonetheless went on to a 7:51 Day 3 double-marathon to hold onto 6th place overall.Rich's plant-fueled feats of boundary-pushing athleticism have been featured on CNN and major publications including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times Sunday Magazine, The Huffington Post, Stanford Magazine, Men's Health Living, VegNews, Triathlete, Outside, 3/GO Magazine and Men's Fitness Magazine, which named Rich as one of the “25 Fittest Men in the World.”I can't think of a better guest for our 100th episode of Next Level Soul. Enjoy my conversation with Rich Roll. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4858435/advertisement

For the final episode of this season 515 is offering you a special double episode. This is Part A.Link to Part BMy two Ohana guests today share a number of ideas that have propelled them to the top of the podium in world events in 2022. They are both in their 50's; they both believe in doing more than just swimming, biking and running to stay in shape; and they believe the records they are setting are only there to push other women to break them.My first guest, Dede Griesbauer, is currently the oldest pro triathlete on the planet at the age of 52. She smashed the 50 - 59 age group record at the Ultraman World Championship in 2022 where she topped the women's podium against, what Steve King states is, one of the toughest women's fields to face off on the big island. Dede proudly coaches in the Julie Dibbens crew and is also a broadcaster for Ironman Live when not training or racing herself. The second guest is Yvonne Timewell, amateur triathlete from Penticton, BC, who won the 2022 Ironman World Championship in the 55-59 age group. Yvonne used the toughness she learned on day 3 of the Ultraman Canada race in 2014 to propel her to multiple podium finishes in Kona over the years. Hey Friends!! This week's guest episode has everything – laughter, tears, and the unmistakable hand of God. Joining me on the podcast this week is Scott McDermott, a man who has had not one or two, but three near-death experiences in his life, all of which could have taken him out…but God. When Scott says, “my life is a miracle,” he is absolutely telling the truth, and his story is one that is a true testament to the miracle power of God. After going from fat to fit, Scott built a 15,000 square foot gym in 2002, and wrote a book called “If Your Body Were a Car, You Wouldn't Treat it This Way”. He entered his first Triathlon in 2005 and fell in love with the sport! In November 2015 at the Ultraman World Championships, Scott crashed his bike going 43mph, breaking multiple bones, including his skull. After a remarkable recovery, Scott went back to the World Championships in 2018, and placed 25th overall. Scott's life is truly an inspiration, and it's my honor to share it with you. With the Ultraman World Championships starting tomorrow in Kona, we wanted to talk to a past champion. That's why this week, Haley and Alyssa chat with Amy Robitaille about her win at the 2022 Ultraman Canada. With a 10km (6.2 mile) swim and 144km (90 mile) bike on the first day, a 276 km (171 mile) bike on the second day, and an 85km (52.4 mile) run on the final day, Amy pushed her body to its limits. Amy shares her key to winning, which in fact, means slowing down a bit. As Amy says, "you can walk and win". Finally, the duo chat about the upcoming race. It has been 3 long years since the Ohana has had the opportunity to have a family reunion on the big island at the Ultraman World Championships. Sheryl and Dave Cobb are happy to be hosting 40 athletes from 15 countries at this race once again. Sheryl gives us the roster of athletes and Steve King joins us to share his insights and statistical knowledge of a field that he says may be the strongest that he has seen compete at a single race. There are plenty of stories to be played out between those who are there to complete and those who are there to compete -- especially in the women's field. These include, an athlete looking to be the oldest woman to finish an Ultraman event at age 67, an athlete looking to win her 5th World Championship at 5 different distances, an athlete who is competing in their 20th consecutive World Championship, and an athlete looking to go sub 20 hours.Resources mentioned in this episode:Ultraman World Championships Ironman World Championships Ironman 70.3 World ChampionshipsUltraMx 515 UltraMx 515 Non-StopEpic 5Ultraman FloridaUltraman CanadaEpic DecaChallenged Athletes FoundationBadwater 135Ultra Tri Sweden 615UB 515Israman Ultra Israel Shout outs and mentions in this episode:Sheryl Cobb / Dave Cobb (S2E6)Steve King (S1E1 E2 E3)Van Sanchez (S1E6) (S3E9)Diane Anderson (Athlete)Dan JensenYonnatan Alejandro Rivas Venegas (Athlete)Carlos GalvisJD Tremblay (Athlete)Steven Keller (Athlete) (S2E10) Richard Thompson (Athlete)Kiel Omerod (Athlete)Pheng Lor (Athlete)Ryan Rinear (Athlete)Barry Berg (Athlete) (S1E9) Rob Gray (Athlete)Asparuh Borisov (Athlete)Sebastien Lefebvre (Athlete)Brad Sawa (S1E10)Jeremy Couch (Athlete)Rodrigo Vasconcellos (Athlete)Acyr da Luz (Athlete)Jon Greyell (Athlete)Randy Latza (Athlete)Shane Mascarin (Athlete) (S2E4)Eiko Hibino (S1E5)Makoto Hoshino (S1E2)Bob Babbitt - BabbittvilleHeidi BabbittJen McVeay (S2E8)Shane Duffy (Athlete)Miguel Madrid Lopez (Athlete)Ariel Gorga (Athlete)Ismael FrancoAlessandro Medeiros (Athlete)Armando Armellini (Athlete)Olov Berg (Athlete) Juan Craveri (Athlete) (S1E5)Luis Hernando De Arriba (Athlete)Michael Morrissey (Athlete)Brian Fredley (Athlete)Sarah McLartyGary Wang (Athlete) (S2E6)Howie Nordström (Athlete)Adam Grant (Athlete)Antonina Reznikov (Athlete) Leanda Cave (Athlete) (S1E8)Amy Robitaille (S3E6)Jamie Harris (Athlete) (S2E11)Karen Woodward (Athlete)Meredith Terranova (Athlete)Dede Griesbauer (Athlete)Amber MonforteTara Norton (Athlete)Shannon Callies (Athlete)Fiona Siemelink (Athlete)Hans Siemelink Wendy Minor Jane Bockus (S1E4) Show Contributors:Host : Larry Ryan Contributing Raconteur : Steve KingAnnouncer : Mary Jo DionneProduction : 5Five EnterprisesMusic : Run by 331For show notes and past guests, please visit the Podcast Website: https://515theultrapodcast.buzzsprout.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/515TheUltraPodcastInsta : 515theultrapodcastEmail : 515Ultraman@gmail.com

In triathlon, he represented Canada at the World Triathlon Championships and has competed in Kona for both the Ironman World Championships and the Ultraman World Championships.Ferg has challenged all of the big names in Ultra and made friendships along the way. He has compelling stories about his adventures and the people who have shared them. As a top performer in the sport he also gives great insights into training and volume. Now age 65, he has slowed the pace a little but the outdoor adventures continue and he still has another Chuckanut 50 on the horizon.Resources mentioned in this episode:Rose City 50The Eagle 100Western States Marathon Des Sables100km World ChampionshipBadwaterIronman World ChampionshipsUltraman World ChampionshipsWorld Triathlon Championships Grouse GrindVancouver MarathonVancouver Sun RunBellingham TriathlonChuckanut Mountain 50k Knee Knacker 50k CCC - UTMB IM CanadaUM CanadaThe Distance of Truth DocumentaryValley of Fire MarathonImpossible 2 PossibleIM Coeur d'Alene Rim 2 Rim 2 RimShout outs and mentions in this episode:Bill HawkeRobert LangHayden HawksMax KingDr Jack TauntonCarter HawkConnie Hawk Cheryl HawkSteve KingMoe BeaulieuMonica Fernandez Patrick BauerMagnus VerbruggeDean Karnazes Charlie EngleChristopher BerglandChris KostmanScott JurekRay ZahabDavid GogginsMarshall UrlichGraham FraserJane BockusDavid SecordGerry Van de WintRyan MackenzieJohn NicklesSharon SecordAnatoly Levsha Jochen Demback___________________________________________________________Show Contributors:Host : Larry Ryan Contributing Raconteur : Steve KingAnnouncer : Mary Jo DionneProduction : 5Five EnterprisesMusic : Run by 331___________________________________________________________For show notes and past guests, please visit the Podcast Website: https://515theultrapodcast.buzzsprout.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/515TheUltraPodcastInsta : 515theultrapodcastIf you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes or where you get your pods. You will enjoy this episode, I guarantee it. It is a story of health and wellness from a true expert in the field, but it is also a story of survival and defying the odds from a horrific accident that happened to this Ultraman. I had the honor of speaking with Scott McDermott, Personal Trainer, Coach, Ultra Endurance Athlete and Speaker who loves to inspire and coach people to reach their full potential in spite of massive obstacles. He has been in the health and nutrition space for over 20 years so we had lots to talk about regarding that important topic, but the last part of the interview is worth the wait as Scott details his horrific injury that he suffered while racing in the bike portion of the Ultraman World Championships in 2015. His story about perseverance during his 3 year recovery to not only live his life again, but to get back to the Ultraman World Championships, is truly inspiring. His accident, road to recovery and his return to the Ultraman race is chronicled in an award-winning documentary on YouTube entitled "The Warrior Code" (https://youtu.be/dwANynO24eA). You can learn more about Scott, his story and the amazing work he does for his clients at his website: https://scottyfit.com

We are super pumped to have former professional triathlete Leanda Cave with us today. Leanda is a multi-time world champion, coach, an absolute legend in the sport of triathlon, and most recently, an Ultraman athlete. Leanda placed 2nd overall at Ultraman Canada, beating the first male overall by 11-minutes which means that women claimed the first two podium spots. So very, very cool. Leanda started competing in triathlon in 1993 at the age of 14, eventually leading her to become a Junior Elite in Australia. At age 21, she returned to her home country of Great Britain, where she pursued a professional career in multisport. In the early days of her professional career, she focused on Olympic distance draft-legal racing and, in 2001, became the European Under-23 Olympic Distance Champ. In 2002 she won a silver at the commonwealth games, silver at the European championships, and her first world title in Cancun. Five years later, she moved into long-distance triathlon, winning her second world title at the ITU long-distance world championship. And then, in 2012 became the first woman in history to complete the double when she won the Ironman 70.3 and 140.6 World Championships just five weeks apart. She is one of the greatest athletes to ever compete in the triathlon and BJ, and I have followed her career for a long time. So we are honored that she is sharing the mic with us, and we hope you enjoy the show. In this episode we discuss: - not scared of figuring things out - seeking the path with the most obstacles - singular focus vs having fun & enjoying life - the mental side of Ultraman - tricks to bring the mind back into focus - why pursue Ultraman? - racing for something bigger than yourself - injury is part of the job description as an athlete - cross training for Ultraman - how to train an athlete through injury - being intuitive vs fixated on data - race day is a dance floor - taking life too seriously - passions of being a coach - using training to dial in nutrition to fuel performance - mobility, stability, and strength training - focusing on what you can do, not what you can't do - the approach going into Ultraman World Championships - fueling advice for entering into long-distance triathlons Thank you to all patrons on Patreon for keeping this podcast commercial-free, we are grateful for you. Namaste- Jess
Thanks to Scott McDermott for joining me on "The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner!" Scott is an elite athlete, regularly competing in the Ultraman. This competition covers three days and makes a 26-mile marathon run look like a walk in the park. The Ultraman World Championships are held on the Big Island of Hawaii. The race includes a 6.2 mile ocean swim, 261.4 mile bike ride, and 52.4 mile run. What a test of human endurance! The prize? The thrill of competition, a sweaty tee-shirt, and a wet bathing suit!In 2015, Scott experienced every athlete's nightmare. His bike skidded in the rain, and he crashed. Three days later, he woke up in an intensive care unit with a severe traumatic brain injury requiring neurosurgery, a fractured shoulder, wrist, and a variety of other injuries. After returning home, Scott struggled to run his previously successful 15,000-square-foot gym. Finally, the COVID pandemic dealt a death blow to his business. With the help of an amazingly supportive wife, friends, an extensive medical team, and three years of cognitive and physical rehabilitation, Scott recovered, started a new business and thrives as a fitness trainer and motivator. He has also returned to the Ultraman World Championships. Wow!Here's a link to the feature-length documentary film about his accident and recovery, "Living the Warrior Code," on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwANynO24eAPlease listen as Scott shares his inspirational story during this 25-minute interview.Scott can be reached at his website: http://www.scottyfit.comThanks to CompHealth, the first locum tenens company, for sponsoring this program!

I had to see if he was serious about it or just starting another discussion. Never one to shy away from the political side of the Ultra family, we also discuss the future of the sport. After going from fat to fit, Scott McDermott built a 15,000 square foot gym in 2002, wrote a book called “If Your Body Were a Car, You Wouldn't Treat it This Way”. Scott entered his first Triathlon in 2005 and fell in love with the sport! In November 2015 at the Ultraman World Championships, crashed his bike at nearly 70 kph, breaking his shoulder, arm, ribs, and skull. He nearly died that day and has made a remarkable recovery and made an award-winning documentary; “Living the Warrior's Code”. At his 2nd Ultraman World Championships, he crashed his bike at nearly 70 kph, breaking his shoulder, arm, ribs, and skull. He nearly died that day and through a long, painful and gritty 3-year recovery, he made it back to the world championships to place 25th overall. This remarkable journey was made into an award winning documentary; “Living the Warrior's Code”. Today, Scott enjoys coaching people to reach their full potential in spite of any obstacles. Legends! In the studio today I am joined by the legendary Rich Roll. Rich is a primary thought leader in society, with a podcast ranked in the top charts for years and a social platform reaching millions, Rich is truly a voice for the people. Being able to learn from Rich as a friend is truly an honor and a blessing. In this episode, we gain a vulnerable and in-depth look into who Rich truly is. We dive into his story from a Division 1 swimmer in college to battling with drugs and alcohol all the way to how he maintains emotional sobriety now in the midst of his success. Rich is one of the most impressive, supportive, and caring humans I have met. He graduated from Stanford University and Cornell Law School, became a lawyer, and was making good money. At the age of 30 Rich had hit rock bottom working as a lawyer in the hopes to prove himself to his family and peers. He became a workaholic for 10 years striving to please others while neglecting himself. Through this low point, he reached the age of 40, had a heart attack scare, was addicted to junk food weighing 50 pounds overweight, and wasn't happy. He had a wake-up call. Rich became a vegan, focusing on the energetic benefits of plants and how to eat for performance. In his 40's Rich became one of the first vegan ultra-endurance athletes paving the way for those to follow. In 2008 and 2009, Rich competed in the Ultraman World Championships in Hawaii which is one of the world's most daunting and grueling endurance races on the planet. He was a top finisher. Later in May of 2010, Rich completed the EPIC5 Challenge: completing 5 ironman-distance triathlons on 5 islands of Hawaii in under a week. He also became one of the world's fittest men. These are incredible physical feats that many couldn't even imagine achieving and these are just one aspect of who Rich is. In 2012, Rich launched his book Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World's Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself, and became a #1 bestselling author. After publication, Rich launched his podcast The Rich Roll Podcast which resides in the Itunes Top-10 List. Rich is a legend. In the episode we specifically discuss:How Rich Roll became plant-basedHow and why he started running ultra marathonsHow he began building his business after Finding UltraHis journey into creating The Rich Roll PodcastThe power of rehabHow to increase aerobic capacityWhat activities increase aerobic capacityHow to train for an IronmanHow should a beginner train for an ironman? How do you train for a half Ironman?Currently, Rich is helping thousands transition to plant-based diets through the in-depth discovery of their bio-individuality met with his incredible service, Meal Planner, which provides customers with recipes, videos, articles, meal deliveries, and everything you could need to make a healthy transition to veganism. The Full RundownA graduate of Stanford University and Cornell Law School, Rich is a 50-year old, accomplished vegan ultra-endurance athlete and former entertainment attorney turned full-time wellness & plant-based nutrition advocate, popular public speaker, husband, father of 4 and inspiration to people worldwide as a transformative example of courageous and healthy living. Defeated by a mere flight of stairs that left him buckled over in pain, he foresaw the almost certain heart attack looming in his near future. It was time for a major life change. The day immediately following his staircase epiphany, Rich overhauled his diet, became a dedicated vegan, put on his running shoes and jumped back into the pool. With an injured knee and shoulder Rich nonetheless went on to a 7:51 Day 3 double-marathon to hold onto 6th place overall.Rich's plant-fueled feats of boundary-pushing athleticism have been featured on CNN and major publications including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times Sunday Magazine, The Huffington Post, Stanford Magazine, Men's Health Living, VegNews, Triathlete, Outside, 3/GO Magazine and Men's Fitness Magazine, which named Rich as one of the “25 Fittest Men in the World.”Along with his wife and four children, Rich resides in Malibu Canyon outside of Los Angeles. When he isn't writing, podcasting or spending time with his family, you can find him lost on the remote trails of the Santa Monica Mountains.Follow Rich on Social Media buy his latest book and listen to his Podcast: Instagram Facebook Buy his new book hereRich Roll Podcast Follow The Story Box on Social MediaInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/thestoryboxpodcast/ Facebook Page - https://www.facebook.com/thestoryboxpodcast Website - https://thestoryboxpodcast.com/The Story Box on Podcast Platforms & Subscribe for more! Check out Scott's award winning documentary film! www.warriorcodefilm.com Here is Scott's bio: After getting fit and finding his passion in life after 13 year career in Architecture that had him overweight, sick and stressed, Scott McDermott built a 15,000 square foot gym; Best Body Fitness in 2002. Scott wrote a book about health and fitness called “If Your Body Were a Car, You Wouldn't Treat it This Way”, as well as a fitness journal and a recipe book. Since getting back in shape, Scott has enjoyed an amazing journey and after deciding to try out the Sylvan Lake Half Ironman Triathlon to see if he could finish it, he qualified for Ironman Canada. Within a few years he was representing Canada at the World Championships in Holland and Australia as well as racing all over Canada and the USA. 4 Ironmans and 2 long course world championships later, Scott decided to attempt a triathlon 2.5 times longer than Ironman, called Ultraman. At the 2011 Canadian Ultraman Championships, he crossed the line in 6th place overall, only 20 minutes form 2nd in a 3 day race spanning 520kms. He has since completed the Ultraman World Championships several times, including a 21st overall finish in 2013. He has ridden a bike 400 kms in one day for Cancer research several times, ridden a mountain bike 700kms to Montana along the great continental divide, and completed every Spartan Distance including an Ultra Beast (a 50km run on a ski hill full of obstacles) in addition to ultra marathons and a total of 7 Ironmans, plus too many Half Ironmans to count. In November 2015 Scott was racing at the Ultraman World Championships again and crashed his bike at close to 70 kilometers per hour, breaking many bones including his shoulder, arm, ribs and skull. It nearly cost him his life. He has made a remarkable full recovery and raced again 3 years later in November 2018, placing 25th in the world while filming the process for an award winning documentary; “Living the Warrior's Code”. Scott is very active in Rotary, serving on 3 missions to deliver wheelchairs and has been President as well as Rotarian of the Year. Scott has been awarded Sylvan Lake's Citizen of the Year twice and Business of the Year Twice as well. He hosts the Annual Terry Fox Run, and has organized the BBF Sprint Triathlon, Zombie Run, Father's Day Run, Sylvan Lake Half Ironman, Amazing Race Sylvan Lake and more. Having shut down Best Body Fitness in March of 2020 forever, Scott is now focused on his long time passion of being a professional speaker and working to get his documentary out on streaming to the world, as well as writing a book about the experience. Welcome to episode eleven of the Low Tide Boyz, a Swimrun Podcast! On this week’s show we chat with the legendary Jonas Colting. We were pretty star struck when we interviewed him while we were in Catalina for Ötillö but he was an awesome guest and we think that you’ll really enjoy the interview. More on this interview later in the show. Our top story this week, and pretty much the top story in the world is COVID-19. In the Bay Area, where we live, we’ve been instructed to shelter-in-place for the next three weeks and local gyms and pools have closed. In addition, a bunch of races have been getting canceled around the world. While this is always a huge letdown, be kind to your race directors and listen to the medical and public health experts and basically do what they say. We will get through this together. In other news, we’ve officially launched our collab shirt fundraiser for the WILD Youth Initiative created by WILD Swimrun. All proceeds from this apparel will go towards providing scholarships to help girls attend the WILD Swimrun camps. Have enough shirts (and/or pillows)? Head over to lowtideboyz.com to donate to the WILD Youth Initiative.Let me just start by saying that our guest today has his own Wikipedia page. We are honored and humbled to have had the one and only Jonas Colting on the show today.Jonas has won six World and European medals in triathlon and has been competing in the sport since 1991. He won the Ultraman World Championships in Hawaii twice. (For those that don’t know what that’s a 320 miles [515 kilometer for our metric system fans] three-day competition.) He’s also won the Ötillö world championship three times and is the only person who has done the race every year since its inception in 2006.Jonas launched his own wetsuit company, Colting Wetsuits, in 2016 and his brand has been innovating swimrun-specific gear since the beginning. We chatted with Jonas about the origins of swimrun, which interestingly the sport wasn’t even called that until about 6 years after the original Ötillö race took place. As mentioned above, Jonas has participated in every Ötillö World Championship. He told us the story of the original race and how the sport evolved into the Ötillö that we all know and love today. The first couple of years were pretty interesting as you will hear. The gear and style of the race has been pretty consistent since 2008. The race saw exponential growth every year and Jonas gives a lot of credit to Mats and Michael for their vision for what this sport could be.We chatted about the first race in Ötillö in the U.S. and Jonas thinks that giving endurance athletes a new extreme physical challenge and a change of pace for triathletes that might be tired of doing the same races over and over. Jonas came to Catalina to support Ötillö’s expansion to the U.S. and raced the World Series distance race.Jonas started developing his own wetsuit after not being satisfied with all the options out there. He cemented his idea to start his own brand in 2015 while he was doing a charity swim from Stockholm to Gothenburg (640K or 400 miles away!!!!) and raised over $100,000. During that swim he ended up mostly swimming without a wetsuit because nothing was working. He launched his own brand, Colting Wetsuits, in 2016.We talked about the future of the sport and the hope to keep some of the grassroots feeling about the sport, including how wild and crazy the sport is. We all agreed about the values of the sport to take care about the environment and the friendliness of everyone that competes in the sport made the sport really unique. Basically a love fest about swimrun and its future. You can follow Jonas Colting and Colting Wetsuits on Instagram. That’s it for this week’s show. Michael Scragg is an experienced endurance athlete in his own right. After breaking his neck in a downhill mountain biking accident in the early 2000s, Michael made the switch to road cycling and ultimately into triathlons. Since finishing ‘dead last’ in his first Half Ironman, Michael has gone onto finish 9 Ironman triathlons as well as multiple 24-hour mountain bike races and ultra-marathons. He is also married to 2x Sparta Chicks Radio guest and ultra-endurance athlete, Melissa Urie! (Mel was on the podcast in 2017 to share her experience at the Epic 5 LINK and again early in 2019 to discuss competing at the Ultraman World Championships). Over the last few years, Michael’s racing career has taken a backseat while Mel pursued her ultra-endurance goals, which have included Ultraman races in Canada, Australia and at the World Championships in Hawaii, the Epic 5 as well as her upcoming race at Uberman. So in this episode, Michael and I discuss what it’s like to be on the flip side; how to crew for, live with, support and encourage the endurance athletes in your life. And this topic isn’t complete also without discussing why it’s important for the athlete in the household to be aware of the impact their sport has on the family (in ways you may not have anticipated). This is a very different conversation from the ones we’d usually have, but it is I think just as important. “You are never going to be the same person you were yesterday because there’s always something you learned in that workout about yourself, your fitness, your mind, and your nutrition. That’s the training process.”Chris HauthMaking his latest appearance in our ongoing Coach’s Corner series is none other than Chris Hauth, one of the world’s most respected endurance and ultra-endurance coaches.A sub-9 hour Ironman, Chris (@AIMPCoach) is a former professional triathlete, Age Group Ironman World Champion, and 2-time Olympic Swimmer. In 2006, Chris won the Ironman Coeur D’Alene and went on to be the first American amateur & 4th overall American at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. When he’s not training and racing, Chris hosts the Weekly Word Podcast and runs AIMP Coaching, mentoring a wide spectrum of athletes ranging from elite professionals — including Ironman and Western States top finishers, Ultraman winners and Olympic Trials qualifiers — to first time half-marathoners.Whether you are an elite athlete or just starting out, Chris knows how to get the best out of athletes the right way. A long-time friend and mentor as much as a coach, I have been under Chris’ tutelage since 2008, during which time he deftly guided me through three Ultraman World Championships (’08, ’09 & ’11), EPIC5 in 2010 and the Ötillö Swimrun World Championships in 2017, an event we raced together as a team.I could have never achieved the level of athletic success I have enjoyed without Chris’ deft counsel, so it is with pleasure that I share more of his wisdom with you today. As we put the cold winter months behind us, today's conversation focuses on balancing your fitness goals against life's demands as we welcome warmer days. As always, Chris drops knowledge applicable whether you are a professional athlete or a cubicle warrior just looking to improve the quality of your day to day. Mel joined me on the podcast way back in episode 14 to share her experience of becoming only the 2nd woman ever to complete the Epic 5 - a race consisting of 5 Ironman-distance triathlons on 5 Hawaiian islands over 5 days (you can find that conversation here). This week, Mel returns to the podcast to share her experience of competing at the Ultraman World Championships on the Big Island of Hawaii in 2018. Ultraman is a 3 day triathlon, consisting of a 10km swim, 420km riding and an 84km run. #spoileralert Mel missed the cut-off on Day 2 by 8 minutes (after 12 hours of racing). Some in the same situation might describe this DNF as a ‘failure’. However, Mel views it as a battle she lost, rather than a ‘failure’. In this fun conversation, we discuss: - what her experience at the Epic 5 means to her now (almost 2 years down the track) and how it’s changed how she sees herself, - her advice to women who struggle with their athletic identity and naming and claiming who and what they are, - how she found her way through an intense period of experiencing the Imposter Complex in the lead-up to the World Championships, - how the race at the Ultraman World Championships unfolded including the point at which she realised she may not make the cut-off on day 2, - why she describes the race as a battle she lost (as opposed to a ‘failure’) - the incredible event she’s decided to tackle next, and - her experience of being on the Rich Roll podcast and whether her pesky Imposter showed up too. “Everybody wants the finish line. Everybody wants a medal. But people don’t want to put the work in.”Danielle GrabolIn 2010, the tireless and intrepid Jason Lester hoodwinked me into his latest fit of voluntary suffering insanity: an attempt to complete 5 Ironman-distance triathlons on 5 Hawaiian Islands in under 5 days. Hence was born the EPIC5 Challenge — and somehow we survived to tell the tale. Now institutionalized, EPIC5 annually attracts a global handful of athletes adequately unhinged to retrace our steps. Over the last 8 years, 29 individuals have successfully completed the challenge. Three of these intrepid humans are women. Two of them are here today.Meet real-life Wonder Women Danielle Grabol & Melissa Urie – both athletes thriving on the cutting edge of ultra-endurance.But it wasn't always that way.Pushing 225 pounds, 15 years ago Dani was a junk food junkie and a pack-a-day smoker who couldn't even climb a flight of stairs without losing her breath (sounds familiar!). In 2005, her doctor told her that if she didn’t change her ways she’d be dead before she turned 40.So she hit the gym. It was hardly overnight, but ultimately Dani reinvented herself wholesale. Down 70 pounds, an athlete was born. But on a training ride a year later, Dani was struck by a drunk driver. Her injuries were so severe she was told she would never run or bike again. Instead, she went on to compete in multiple Ironmans and even a double-Ironman. In 2013 she was one-half of the youngest two-person female team to finish RAAM — the legendary bike race across the entire United States. And in 2016, Dani became the very first female to compete in and finish EPIC5 — a stereotype shattering story she lays bare in her beautiful memoir, Fear No Distance*.A mental health nurse from Melbourne, Australia, Mel grew up active but never competitive. But in 1998, in an effort to lose a bit of weight and get fit, she participated in the Great Victorian Bike Ride with her dad. Thus was sparked a passion for ultra-endurance. Over the years, Mel has completed 6 Ironmans and a few double ironman distances races, including Ultraman Canada and Ultraman Australia*. Like Dani, she discovered EPIC5 by way of Finding Ultra, signed up and in 2017, Mel became the second female to ever complete the challenge. The bottom line? Mel and Dani are two badass women who know how to get it done. And this conversation is about just that. It's about putting in the work. It's about patience. Determination and grit. Not being afraid to fail. It's about the mindset required to break stereotypes. And it's about the mental toughness demanded to compete at the highest level in an arena dominated by men.So check your excuses at the door and enjoy! To view our conversation on YouTube, visit bit.ly/danielleandmel421. And don't forget we're also now on Spotify here: bit.ly/rrpspotifyPeace + Plants,*I recorded this interview way back in mid-November. At the time, Mel was preparing for the Ultraman World Championships in Hawaii. Unfortunately she did not finish that race. I'm not sure what happened but I'll find out and let you know.Listen, Watch & Subscribe See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
“We're able to give so much more when we take care of ourselves on a daily basis.”Chris HauthMaking his latest appearance in our ongoing Coach’s Corner series is none other than Chris Hauth, one of the world’s most respected endurance and ultra-endurance coaches.A sub-9 hour Ironman, Chris (@AIMPCoach) is a former professional triathlete, Age Group Ironman World Champion, and 2-time Olympic Swimmer. A long-time friend and mentor as much as a coach, I have been under Chris’ tutelage since 2008, during which time he deftly guided me through three Ultraman World Championships (’08, ’09 & ’11), EPIC5 in 2010 and the Ötillö Swimrun World Championships in 2017, an event we raced together as a team.I could have never achieved the level of athletic success I have enjoyed without Chris’ deft counsel, so it is with pleasure that I share more of his wisdom with you today.Today's discussion centers around maintaining fitness engagement during the cold winter months, when the halo effect of your New Year's resolutions have faded and inspiration tends to wane. We cover a wide variety of topics, including:* setting proper goals;* creating enthusiasm for your yearly resolutions;* maintaining connection with your fitness when motivation fails;* how self-care can provide clarity, reflection and intention;* why this is the season for functional strength work; and* the importance of connecting with self and nature through physical activity2019 is now. “You have to go to war with yourself before you can find peace”David GogginsI can think of no better guest to usher in 2019 than the mighty one himself.Incontrovertibly the most inspirational person I have ever met, today David Goggins returns for his second turn on the podcast — a conversation that will catapult you into the new year with the tools and hard truth you need to chase huge dreams, shatter personal limits and transform your life wholesale.Often referred to as the hardest man alive, David is the only member of the US Armed Forces to complete SEAL training (including three Hell Weeks), the U.S. Army Ranger School (where he graduated as Enlisted Honor Man) and Air Force Tactical Air Controller Training. But David is perhaps best known for his superhuman feats of strength and ultra-endurance.After several of his friends died in a 2005 helicopter crash while deployed in Afghanistan, David honored their memory by tackling the most difficult endurance challenges on Earth to raise funds and awareness for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, which provides college scholarships and grants to the children of fallen special ops soldiers.Hence began a most unexpected yet remarkably storied athletic career as one of the world's most accomplished endurance athletes. Highlights include:* 2005: ran 100 miles in under 24 hours on no training;* 2013: world record for most pullups in a 24 hour period (4,030);* 2007: 3rd place — Badwater 135 – a 135 mile ultramarathon across Death Valley widely considered to be the world’s most difficult foot race;* 2006: 2nd place — Ultraman World Championships, a double-ironman distance race widely considered to be the world's most difficult triathlon;* 2007: 1st place — 48-Hour National Championship endurance foot race, where he ran 203.5 miles, beating the previous record by 20 miles; and* 2007 – 2016 — additional top finishes at dozens of the world's most grueling endurance races, including The HURT 100, Leadville 100, Western States & more. But David’s greatest accomplishment isn't athletic. It's self-mastery.From day one, David has faced a concatenation of seemingly insurmountable obstacles – poverty, psychological and physical abuse, obesity, learning disabilities, asthma, sickle cell anemia, and even a congenital heart defect that often left him competing — and winning — on a mere fraction of his actual physical capabilities. It's a scenario that would have buried the best of us. And yet, against all odds, David conquered them all, and ultimately found a way out. It's the story of a man who transformed pain into obsession and, phoenix-like, rose from a state of utter desperation to take complete ownership of his life and total command of his mind to manifest a most extraordinary life.David's implausible journey is laid bare in his recently released memoir, Can't Hurt Me* — one of the most honest, powerful and impactful stories of hardship, redemption and personal perseverance I have ever read. Certain books instruct. Others inspire. But it's the rare read that holds the potential to reframe your sense of personal capability and completely change your life. This book does just that — a statement I don't make lightly. I highly suggest See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Returning guest Mary Knott, a.k.a. Finding Kona, and Head Coach BJ smackdown their recent performances at Ironman Mont Tremblant. Tune in and get the inside scoop from these two top age groupers in the Ironman field. Learn about Mary's complete derailment at the beginning of her season and how she used her yogi mind skills to come back stronger than ever. Mary and BJ run down their experiences while diving into listener questions to quell the curiosity around what it takes to put together the perfect race. Mary was the main event of YTP 50 where we recapped her journey to finding her aloha at the Ironman World Championships in 2016. Since that day she has gone on to a 2nd place finish Ultraman Australia and to being welcomed to the Ultraman World Championships that will take place in November 2018. Mary is a dedicated meditator which has taken her innate ability for deep focus to an entirely new level. She is an athlete to watch and learn from as she continues to get stronger mentally and physically every single day. Coach BJ will continue his path towards finding his Kona qualification as he finished just 7 minutes off the last qualifying time in Tremblant. His puzzle pieces continue to show us that he is Kona worthy but they have yet to all come together in one race. We believe, without doubt, that this will happen at IM Santa Rosa 2019 where, like Mary, he will fulfill his calling to the big island. “An athlete is a mindset. It's how you prepare, think and execute. Not because of some elite status or physical stature. Anybody can be an athlete.”Chris HauthToday I am once again joined by 2-time Olympian Chris Hauth for another edition of Coach’s Corner – a spin on my typical podcast format where I go deep and get granular on the physical, mental and emotional aspects of high performance for both sport and life.A sub-9 hour Ironman, Chris (@AIMPCoach) is an Age Group Ironman World Champion, a former 2-time Olympic Swimmer, and one of the world’s most respected endurance coaches. It's about the differences between intentional training versus simply exercising. And it's about the key practices that — when performed consistently — most influence success in both sport and life. But most of all, this is a discourse about why anyone can be an athlete — a state of mind and action that has nothing to with elite status or genetic gifts and everything to do with your relationship with yourself and how you navigate the world at large.I sincerely hope you enjoy the exchange. For the visually inclined, you can watch our entire conversation on YouTube here: bit.ly/coachscorner377Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & SubscribeApple Podcasts | YouTube | Soundcloud | Stitcher | GooglePlayThanks to this week’s sponsorsDesignCrowd: Custom graphic, logo and web design from over 550, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
"When I was 31, that was when I was in rehab. I had a career in the dark belly of alcoholism and at 31 I got sober in a treatment center in Oregon for 100 days, so I think if I had to characterize myself at 31, I was very confused. I was really unsure about who I was and what I wanted to do with myself. I was a pretty broken individual at that point of my life. And up to that point I thought I had been making good decisions but essentially my best thinking had me in this mental institution, for a lack of a better phrase. So I don't think that I had very much clarity on myself or what made me function and what led me to that dark place. The last 20 years have been about trying to answer that question for myself and also trying to learn from tools that were first introduced me during that experience and build on them and compound them to progressively continue to grow, not just emotionally, but mentally, physically, intellectually, and spiritually." Incredibly honored to welcome Rich Roll to the podcast. The 51-year-old is a husband, father, and champion ultra-endurance athlete, in addition to being a best-selling author, sought-after speaker, and host of a top-ranked podcast. But life hasn't always been so grand. At 31 years old, Rich found himself committed to a treatment center in Oregon, battling an alcohol addiction that had consumed his life. After achieving sobriety in his early 30s, Rich's addictive personality led him down a path of workaholism and 80-hour weeks as a lawyer, an unhealthy lifestyle fueled by fast food that ultimately proved to be unsustainable. It all came to a head when one night when, while walking up the stairs, he became out of breath and feared something was seriously wrong with his health. The next day he embarked on a weeklong juice cleanse that led him to adopt a plant-based lifestyle, a way of living he still practices and advocates for today through writing, speaking and the podcast that bares his name. Not long after radically changing his diet, Rich—a former collegiate swimmer at Stanford—started running and swimming again. He eventually found his way into ultra-endurance sports, where he established himself as a top competitor, finishing the Epic 5—five Iron-distance triathlons in less than a week—in 2010 and placing as a top finisher at the Ultraman World Championships in Hawaii multiple times. In this episode, we talk through the various chapters of Rich's story, digging into his journey to becoming a plant-powered ultra endurance athlete and wellness advocate, and understanding why he is so open and honest about sharing his experiences. We discuss his best-selling memoir Finding Ultra, which has been recently updated and will soon be available at booksellers everywhere, as well as The Plantpower Way and The Plantpower Way: Italia, two books chock full of plant-based recipes and lifestyle guidance that he tag-teamed on with his wife, Julie Piatt. Finally, we also dig into his relationship with racing and how it's evolved through the years, discuss the effect his writing, speaking, and podcasting has had on other people, learn more about the three things he tries to practice on a daily basis, and much, much more. "All of this is an act of service," Rich told me during our conversation. "It's my profession and I need to make a living and all that kind of stuff, but ultimately what really drives me and what's behind all of this is trying to be of service both in the world of recovery and outside the world of recovery with respect to the world at large." Rich Roll was near 40 and in horrific shape. He had a big awakening and transformed himself into not just a fit and well guy, but an elite, ultra endurance athlete. And from that, a guy who is massively inspiring hundreds of thousands of people. You may know Rich from his top ranked podcast, “The Rich Roll Podcast”. Rich is a world-renown, plant-based ultra-endurance athlete, in-demand public speaker, wellness advocate, bestselling author and inspirational hero to a global audience of wellness seekers as a transformative example of courageous and healthy living. The story is, after succumbing to the sedentary throes of overweight middle age, at age 40, Rich made a decision to overhaul his life, adopting a plant-based diet and reinventing himself as an ultra-distance endurance athlete. Just a few years later, Rich stunned the multisport community with top finishes at the Ultraman World Championships, a 320-mile, 3-day double ironman-distance triathlon widely considered one of the most grueling endurance events on the planet. Rich chronicles his journey in Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World’s Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself -- an inspirational memoir of plant-fueled athletic prowess which quickly became a #1 bestseller. In 2015, Rich and his vegan chef wife Julie Piatt released The Plantpower Way – a plant-based cookbook and lifestyle primer for the active modern family. The discussion was, well, Rich! I felt quite a kindred spirit in Rich, and from the authenticity he shares in the struggles he’s dealt with, I think you will too. “Stay healthy, stay motivated and be positive.”Chris Hauth Today, I am once again joined by Chris Hauth (@AIMPCoach) for another edition of Coach’s Corner focused on maintaining fitness with engaged enthusiasm as we navigate the winter months. For those new to the show, Chris is a sub-9 hour Ironman, former professional triathlete, two-time Olympian and one of the world’s most respected endurance coaches. In 2006, Chris won the Ironman Coeur D’Alene and went on to be the first American amateur & 4th overall American at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. When he’s not training and racing, Chris runs AIMP Coaching, mentoring a wide spectrum of athletes ranging from elite professionals — including Ironman and Western States top finishers, Ultraman winners and Olympic Trials qualifiers — to first time half-marathoners. Under Chris’ tutelage since 2008, he deftly guided me through three Ultraman World Championships,EPIC5. and now Ötillö.A friend and mentor as much as a coach, Chris has been my personal coach since 2008, expertly guiding me through three Ultraman World Championships (’08, ’09 & ’11), EPIC5 in 2010 and the 2017 Ötillö Swimrun World Championships in Sweden this past September – which we raced together as a team.Today we discuss:* The importance of rest & taking a break from training;* eating and training with the season;* how to set goals and formulate a plan for the new year;* work-life-training balance;* sustainability — learning how to enjoy your fitness; and* bucket list events and what each of us is looking forward to in 2018On another note, I am looking to hire a filmmaker/photographer. As you may know, David Zammit joined me 2 months ago as my collaborative partner on video and photography projects. During this time, we made a fruitful leap to filming the podcast and created a few other cool pieces (with more on the way). Ultimately, the job turned out to not be the right fit for David, who returned home to Malta. For the record, I loved working with him. We're good friends and he may return to Los Angeles at some point. However, his departure has left me back at square one. Therefore, I am once again putting the word out for a filmmaking / editing / photographer comrade in arms. I will be revisiting all of the previous submissions of course, but I thought it worth putting out another call. Here is what I am looking for:* availability to work full time (or most of the time) and in person (no virtual arrangements);* extensive editing experience in either FCP or Premiere;* experience with graphic design & After Effects* extensive camera experience (owning great equipment a plus);* can multi-task as a filmmaker, editor and photographer* alignment with my mission & fundamental understanding of the opportunityThe job is evenly divided between documentation (e.g., podcast & instructional projects) and art (e.g., vlogs, motivational pieces, etc.). In addition, I am not looking for someone to simply do as I ask, but rather an individual who understands and appreciates aesthetics and collaboration, can bring me new ideas, and ultimately elevate my visual presence across multiple channels.I understand this is a big ask. It will take a very specific person to fill this role, so please only submit if you meet all the qualifications. But if you think you have the goods and appreciate the value of the opportunity, I would love to hear from you.E-mail submissions to info@richroll.com with the subject line: “Video Opportunity”For those visually inclined, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Under Chris’ tutelage since 2008, he deftly guided me through three Ultraman World Championships,EPIC5. and now Ötillö.This past Monday, Chris and I joined 300 athletes from 24 countries to race Ötillö as a two-man team, traversing 26 islands spread across the outer-reaches of the Swedish archipelago on foot and by sea. All told, 40 miles of running and 6 miles of swimming. It was a truly extraordinary experience. Punishing. Humbling. Brutal, beautiful and beyond extreme.Along the way we met gale force winds. Sideways rain. Bone-chilling Baltic waters. And six-foot swells. We were on our hands and knees, scaling vertical granite slippery as ice. We trudged through bogs in knee-deep mud. Loose rocks left us flat on our backs. We bushwhacked terrain so difficult, so impossibly technical, it all feels now like an impossible dream.Today we share the incredible story.I sincerely hope you enjoy the exchange.Peace + Plants,P.S. – For more on the adventure, please read Adam Skolnick's piece for the New York Times, A Brutal Competition, Island to Island, in Sweden. In addition to breaking the oldest then standing women’s NCAA record in the 500 free (with a blazing 4:33), she earned a Bronze medal in the 4×200 free relay at the 2008 Olympics.Caroline has a Masters of Science in Sports Psychology & Motor Behavior from the University of Tennessee and when she’s not training like crazy, she works with young athletes under RISE Elite Athletes, a company she founded that pairs Olympic athletes with young athletes for mentorship and guidance.Today we sit down for a brief (by the standards of this podcast) check in from Lake Tahoe — site of our recent high altitude training camp — for a state-of-the-union on our preparation for the Ötillö Swimrun World Championsips, just 18 days from the date of this posting.Within the frame of this conversation you also will find a number of helpful fitness, training and general wellness takeaways germane to the listener — whether you are an elite athlete, a weekend warrior or just looking for that nudge to get off the couch.Specific subjects discussed include:* a general discussion about Chris & Rich's preparation for Ötillö* the impact of altitude training & training camps* the benefits of accountability partners* the primacy of patience for maximum success in sport* the perils of overtraining* the importance of injury preventionI could have never achieved the level of athletic success I have enjoye... Billy Edwards returns to the show to talk about his experiences since winning Ultraman Florida in 2015. He completed the Ultraman World Championships later that year and has since cut back on his racing since having surgery on his toe. However, he is busy in the sport as a coach of the Naval Academy collegiate triathlon team that finished third at the 2017 Collegiate National Championships. He was one of a few coaches selected for USAT's Elite Mentorship Coaching program and he recently observed a training camp for the collegiate recruiting program. We talk about all this and a few other random triathlon topics. Billy was a guest on episode 52 talking about his Ultraman Florida experience. Billy's website is at http://billythekidtriathlete.com/
“There are so many things that your body gives you clear signals for – you just need to understand the language it’s speaking.”Chris HauthToday I am joined by Chris Hauth for round two of my new and novel Coach's Corner edition of the podcast.A sub-9 hour Ironman, Chris (@AIMPCoach) is the current Age Group Ironman World Champion, a former Olympic Swimmer and one of the world's most respected endurance coaches. “When you think you're done, you're only at 40% of your total potential.”David GogginsThis week's guest is incontrovertibly the most inspirational person I have ever met — a man that will catapult you into 2017 with the inspiration and tools to chase huge dreams, shatter limits, and actualize your best, most authentic self.Often referred to as the toughest athlete on the planet, David Goggins (@davidgoggins) is the only member of the US Armed Forces to complete SEAL training (including THREE Hell Weeks), the U.S. Army Ranger School (where he graduated as Enlisted Honor Man) and Air Force tactical air controller training. But David is perhaps best known for his superhuman feats of strength and ultra-endurance.After several of his friends died in a 2005 helicopter crash while deployed in Afghanistan, David honored their memory by tackling the 10 most difficult endurance challenges on Earth to raise funds and awareness for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, which provides college scholarships and grants to the children of fallen special ops soldiers.Hence began a most unexpected yet remarkably storied athletic career as one of the world's most accomplished endurance athletes. Highlights include:* 2013: world record for most pullups in a 24 hour period (4,030);* 2007: 3rd place — Badwater 135 – a 135 mile ultramarathon across Death Valley widely considered to be the world’s most difficult foot race;* 2006: 2nd place — Ultraman World Championships, a double-ironman distance race widely considered to be the world's most difficult triathlon;* 2007: 1st place — 48-Hour National Championship endurance foot race, where he ran 203.5 miles, beating the previous record by 20 miles; and* 2007 – 2016 — additional top finishes at dozens of the world's most grueling endurance races, including The HURT 100, Leadville 100, Western States & more. But perhaps David’s greatest accomplishment is that throughout his life, he has faced and overcome a concatenation of seemingly insurmountable obstacles to become the man he is today – obstacles like asthma, sickle cell anemia, psychological and physical abuse, obesity, academic struggles, and even a congenital heart defect that often left him competing — and winning — on a mere fraction of his actual physical capabilities. In addition to being one of the most remarkable people I have ever met, David has had a profound impact on me personally. It was his singular example that ignited my passion for ultra-endurance and fueled the self-belief required to pursue a new life. In truth, I’m not sure I would have achieved my athletic and life goals had he not blazed the path before me. I simply cannot ever repay the debt of gratitude I have for this man.One of the most powerful podcasts I have ever produced, this a conversation about the primacy of purpose to cultivate your inner voice. It's about passion and self-accountability. It's about the limiting beliefs that hold us back and the importance of mindset to overcome them. And it's about the embrace of suffering as a crucible for growth and self-knowledge.But ultimately, this is a conversation about what it means to be truly alive.Welcome to 2017 people. It's time to check your excuses at the door. It's time to stop talking yourselves out of being great. It's time to get comfortable being uncomfortable. It's time to wake up. Because your life is not some future event. Your life is now.Peace + Plants,P.S. – If you enjoy this podcast and can't get enough of Goggins, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Part Two of Two: The quest for authentic greatness may mean a complete reinvention. A close examination of your perception of self, of your belief in what you’re capable of, in who you fundamentally are. It may mean asking the tough questions: Who do you spend your time with, how do you invest the hours of your days, what do you decide to focus on? It may mean that in order to make a quantum leap in the direction of positive personal development that you leave your old self and parts of your old life behind entirely. Today’s guest is someone I have admired for 18 years – and I’ve had a front row seat to witnessing his complete 180-degree transformation. He is someone who never craves or seeks out the spotlight, unlike his obnoxious wife. He is as close to being completely devoid of ego as anyone I’ve ever known. He is humble and unassuming and kind and driven and determined and he believes in the power that we all possess to transform our lives. To reinvent. To climb our own Mount Everest. Whether it’s from quitting smoking, giving up the consumption of fast food and meat products overall, reigning in a relationship with excessive partying and drinking, going back to school to pursue higher education, or starting on a path to see what you’re capable of when it comes to physical fitness – my guest titan has done it all. And I would know, because I am married to him. When I met Chad Bentley in February 1999 -- on the night he grabbed my bum cheeks and slurred “I think you’re awesome” at an Irish pub in Vancouver -- I knew he was special (and not because he grabbed my ass). I saw in him a beautiful person, but a beautiful person who didn’t see it in himself yet. I’ve always said that Chad is like buried treasure, the deeper you get, the more richness you find. In the last nearly two decades, I have seen Chad transform – he was always an athlete, don’t get me wrong. He was one-to-watch during his days as a rugby player in Abbotsford before a terrible knee injury took him out of the game and under the surgeon’s knife many times – and onto the sidelines, where he went into a bit of a downward spiral. Reassessing who he was: If he wasn’t this rising rugby star, who was he? Instead, he became what he calls “the club drunk” that person who would binge drink in an effort to appear that he was having a good time, but really it was to mask his own feelings of lack of worth. It was a time of tremendous uncertainty about the direction of his own life. I met Chad on the tail end of this, on the cusp of a new beginning. Almost like the space between two paragraphs. We knew one paragraph had ended and we had no idea where or when or how the next one would begin. But we needn’t have worried. Because when you’re committed to the process, and when you ask the tough questions, the answers and the beauty reveal themselves. Chad walked away from his old life. If there’s something tough that you have yet to contend with, I can safely ascertain he’s done it. An unsupportive social environment? Moving from sedentary to active? Smoking? Going back to school? Diet and nutrition? He’s dealt with it. He is a guy who not only went back to school, but in addition to tackling various business courses at the undergraduate level, obtained a certificate in plant based nutrition from Cornell University. Chad, who went from living on a diet of chicken wings, is today a vegetarian endurance athlete who represented Canada at the Ultraman World Championships in Hawaii. Ultraman, is the equivalent of doing approximately 2 and half ironman distance events in three days – a 10km (6 mile) swim, a 420km (260mile) bike, and an 84km (52mile) double marathon. I am excited to share Chad with the world -- we have listeners in 45 countries now. He is as inspiring as they get. And my daughters – our daughters – could not have a better role model. And for the first time ever, we have done a Two Part interview. Today’s is Part Two, and I encourage you to go back and listen to Part One. Chad calls himself shy. I don’t feel he’s shy, I think he’s just not showy. He’s not arrogant. He’s real and calm and never that Look At Me person – and in this chat, he is open. He’s open about his struggles over the years with self-worth, something we all go through. He’s open about his one-time binge drinking. And I want to thank Chad for that – I think when people achieve greatness as he has as an athlete on an international scale, there’s a tendency for us to gloss over the hard times. To curate a life on social media for example that it’s all about the good times. And this is what makes him such a motivation to so many people. He made the decision to transform. He made the decision to walk through the dark times and the hard times and to come out on the other side. Nature strengthens through struggle, if we look around us we see examples of that everywhere. And I am honoured to live with a titan who embodies that – Chad has struggled, and fallen (just as we all have) but he rose again, and when he rose it was a whole new him, and a whole new life. And I am so privileged to have been there to see it all. If you think Chad is someone you’d like to connect with, in 2017, Chad will be launching “Plants. Life. Sport.” coaching – dedicated to helping others transform their lives in the way he has. No, you don’t have to do an ironman to work with Chad. All you need to have is the desire to make a positive change, and he will be there for you, step by step – because guess what? He’s been there. I remember when he and I did our first 5k run together – and he remembers too. And it doesn’t matter where you live on the planet, reach out.

Here’s the thing, he had strep throat when we recorded this chat, and he had to dart off to the dr. So we had to keep the chat to 35 minutes or so. I thought that would be enough time, to you know, give a top-level introduction to this person, this titan, I live with and talk about so much. But we barely scratched the surface. Remember: Buried treasure, right? So, for the first time ever, I am going to do a Two Part interview. “The prize never goes to the fastest guy; it goes to the guy who slows down the least.”Chris HauthThis week marks the highly anticipated return of Chris Hauth to the podcast.A sub-9 hour Ironman, Chris (@AIMPCoach) is the current Age Group Ironman World Champion, a former Olympic Swimmer and one of the world's most respected endurance coaches. In 2006, Chris won the Ironman Coeur D’Alene and went on to be the first American amateur & 4th overall American at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. When he's not training and racing, Chris expertly coaches a wide spectrum of amateur and elite professional athletes across a variety of disciplines, including Ironman and Western States top finishers, Ultraman winners and myriad swimmers towards age group nationals and Olympic Trials. My relationship with Chris began in 2008. A coach/athlete mentorship turned friendship that profoundly and forever altered the trajectory of my life. Brilliantly guiding me through three Ultraman World Championships ('08, '09 & '11) as well as EPIC5 in 2010, my debt of gratitude for Chris' tutelage cannot be overstated. Simply put, I could have never achieved the level of athletic success I have enjoyed without his deft counsel, which has been instrumental in maximizing my potential as an athlete and bettering me as a human being.Today I am pleased to share his wisdom with you. This is a general conversation about Chris' evolving philosophy on training, racing and life. It's also a granular and technical masterclass on optimal training protocols, the common mistakes most athletes make, the approach and mindset required to break the glass ceiling on potential, and how to effectively balance performance goals against general health and well-being.But at it's core, this is a conversation about multi-sport as a crucible for self-awareness and growth.Endurance sports as metaphor for life. We cover a lot of ground in this conversation, including:* Chris’ training & racing philosophy* aerobic vs. anaerobic training* the benefits of calculated progression* pros & cons of external monitors/trackers* race plan execution* prioritizing core strength* strategies for optimizing recovery * the facts on fad dieting and fitness nutrition* striking the proper balance between performance & general health* overcoming adversity through mental & physical fitness, and* the imperative of fitness for lifeI have an inkling this episode will leave you wanting to hear more about Chris' story and philosophy. In this episode I talk with one of the most remarkable guys I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, Craig Percival. Craig has just completed something that has never been even attempted before let alone completed. He has completed 8 full distance Ironman Triathlons, in the 8 states/territories of Australia in 8 days. WOW. My head still shakes even thinking about this undertaking. He has completed well over 20 Ironman Triathlons and has competed at the Ironman World Championships on 4 occasions. He has completed Ultraman Canada, qualified for and finished a remarkable second at the Ultraman World Championships in Hawaii. Craig's message is simple and along the lines of a great sporting brand you may have heard of......JUST DO IT. Get up and get through the first 10 minutes of the training session, the race or even just the day and the rest will make itself happen. His other key message to take away from our conversation is to find YOUR WHY?? His drive and determination to inspire others to achieve their goals can be seen in the flesh with his very own coaching business, www.nolimitsendurance.com.au. Craig's support and care for his athletes is second to none and the results his athletes achieve speak for themselves. If you are looking for an amazing coaching experience to elevate you to the next level get in contact with him. Throughout the 8in8in8 he raised well over A$80,000 for the John Maclean Foundation, an awesome organisation that aims to make the lives of young Australians who use wheelchairs. John himself came out and supported the event right through and I was honoured to be able to have a chat with him and the amazing work he does with young Australians. www.jmf.com.au Thanks to the Shaun and the team at Temple Nutrition who look after all my racing, training and nutritional needs. An interview with Jim Gourley author of The Race Within –The Ultraman World Championship and Christian Isakson, 2 x competitor. Ultraman is one of the toughest events in the world, a 3 day event that tests the stamina and grit of the few willing to brave it. A race born in Kona, where competitors begin on day one with an ocean rough water 6.2 mile swim, followed by another 90 miles by bike. Day two is another 171 miles of cycling to conclude with a double marathon the final day, over 52 miles of running. We discuss the history of the event, the challenges the race promoters face to keep the event running along with some very interesting history of the Ironman World Championship.
Today were back with Ultraman competitor and EPIC5 finisher Christian Isakson for Part 2 of our conversation. Thanks for all the great comments and feedback I received on social media this week in response to Part 1. If you haven’t listened to that one yet dial it up first before tuning in herePart 2 just gets better. We delve into Christian's racing. He walks us through his first-hand experience completing EPIC5 and what it took to put his imprimatur on last year's Ultraman World Championships. Then we turn to service. Christian's commitment to giving back through his involvement with Chris Lieto's non-profit More Than Sport and and his recent work in Kenya with Ameena Project. And how faith, family and humility are keystones to remain grounded, focused and on point. The message is this — if you want your life to have true meaning, satisfaction, fulfillment and a legacy of value, giving back in a meaningful way is essential. If you are feeling adrift, Christian's message will help right your ship. If he has inspired you to seek out a more fulfilling path for yourself but you're just not sure how to embark on your own version of his story, then — as mentioned in the introduction to this episode — you might be encouraged by my new online course on MindBodyGreen.com entitled The Art of Living With Purpose- 2+ hours of streaming video content with an array of downloadable tools I learned, honed and devised to course correct my life — tools I continue to rely on to this day to keep my life focused and on track. Today's guest is a guy I relate to on so many levels. Like a big Venn diagram of overlapping circles — ultra-endurance multi-sport athlete, dad, husband, Ultraman competitor and EPIC5 finisher.Today's guest is unique in that he is the only guy I have ever had on the show who, like me, has competed in both the Ultraman World Championships and EPIC5 (not that there are very many of us – I think only a few).Today’s guest is also unique for his strong sense of faith, directed purpose and commitment to giving back in service to others the blessings bestowed upon him.Today’s guest is Christian Isakson.Christian and I first connected online several years ago on the eve of his 2011 attempt on EPIC5 (one year after I completed that challenge). Christian absolutely rocked it, completing the distance within the five day period I strived for, yet fell short. In the wake of that effort, I vividly recall several conversations in which I encouraged him to ply his trade at Ultraman. Ironically, Christian was unsure — at the time not yet wholly confident in his abilities despite the potential I clearly saw in him. Yet he obliged. To be clear, not because of me – I just gave him a nudge. And at this past year's World Championship in Hawaii, he proved his mettle and then some. His race was far from perfect, but Christian more than distinguished himself as a future contender for the top podium spot, putting his imprimatur on the race with a stunning Day 2 bike effort that had him leading the field for the majority of the brutal 170-mile day.Since our first Facebook exchange, Christian and I have been e-mail pen pals and phone buddies — corresponding consistently over the years about everything from balancing parenting & marriage to nutrition, training strategies, racing, the role of faith and most importantly service — how best to give this whole ultra-endurance experience greater meaning for others beyond mere race results. And yet Christian and I had never actually met in person. But no matter — from our first conversation we have been close; meeting in person existing as nothing more than a formality. All that changed a few weeks ago when Christian came down to Los Angeles for a short overnight visit with me and my family. The hug he gave me when I picked him up at the airport just made our brotherhood official.Today we sit down and sift through it all – the pain, passion, love and faith that fuels and drives him. The unique push-pull allure of ultra-distance racing. And how he balances this brutally demanding lifestyle to maintain a healthy and happy marriage, great relationship with his kids, and a rewarding career as a paramedic / firefighter. But what makes Christian really tick is his faith. His fidelity to his church. And how service plays into his success equation – from his endeavors with various church organizations to his involvement with Chris Lieto's non-profit More Than Sport and Ameena Project – an NGO which took him to Kenya recently to provide much needed medical care to underprivileged in urgent need.I can attest to the fact that Christian returned from Kenya a changed man. A better, more focused man with a keener sense of priorities. His short documentary on the experience tells the tale:In all honesty, it's rare that I get an opportunity to sit down with a guy with whom I share so many things in common. As a result, this conversation is long. Really long. 3 hours long. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Episode 59 Ironman Talk - 9th of May 2007In this weeks show:Gordo on PowerWe have an amazing interview with Gordo Byrn on the subject of Power. He covers all the question that you want answered on this topic. Gordo is one of the best thinkers in the world of Ironman triathlon. Instead of me writing up a piece on him I’ve taken his own write up from his coaching page on this website. It gives you some insight into his thinking as a coach. Here it is: Following five years of general endurance training, I completed my first Ironman in 1999 (11:06). Since that time, I’ve completed fifteen Ironmans and won the Ultraman World Championships. The most satisfying aspect of my recent race performance has been the consistency of results (my last six Ironmans all being completed under 9 hours).I have three things that I believe are essential to making progress in athletics: consistency, recovery and the right mental attitude. I believe very strongly that the last item in that list is by far the most important. I do a lot of work training my mind. The next most important is recovery. About half of the long distance athletes I know spend their lives on the edge of, or slightly over, the overtraining abyss. I believe this is the most overlooked aspect of superior performance. Finally, I believe that consistent work, rather than hard work, is what reaps the most dividends.I work with no more than six athletes at a time. This ensures that every athlete on my roster gets a large “share of mind?.Over the years, I’ve worked with a wide range of athletes (men, women, elites, agegroupers). I’ve found that I am most effective with athletes that are able to train alongside me (personally or at Epic Camps).I’ve been fortunate to train and study under the leading coaches in our sport – Scott Molina, John Hellemans, Dave Scott and Joe Friel. My personal coaching philosophy is a synthesis of their experience as well as my own triathlon career (eight years and counting). There is no easy way, gordoThanks Gordo for another great interview!
