It's estimated that half a million people live in colonias along the Texas-Mexico border. These communities lack basic needs for the residents, including running water, storm drainage and sewage. What are the challenges of living in a colonia? Who is responsible for improving the substandard conditions?
We all encounter hardship and struggle in our lives. It is a fact of life. When we encounter life's pains, heartaches, and doubts, many of us instinctively seek to escape the struggle by any means possible. However, it is precisely these struggles and difficulties that often provide the most valuable and growth-inducing experiences. In this episode, Ross O'Hair and Tom Price talk about how God works in and through our hardships and struggles. As we turn to Him with our struggles, God's Spirit acts as our unwavering anchor within us, providing strength, guidance, solace, and comfort so that we will endure and overcome. --- Have a question or comment about this podcast? While every child of God is equally loved and called by God, each person's experience and Christian walk is varied and therefore their trials and life situations are different. In this teaching Prophet Hari shares keys on how to access divine solutions. 2 Keys to access divine solutions: 1. Refuse to play the blame-game: Become a person that refuses to blame someone or something else for what is happening in your life. The moment you complain, you outsource the power to another to change your current situation. Joseph had much to complain about; his brothers sold and abandoned him, he was falsely accused, imprisoned and betrayed, yet he refused to blame his circumstances. Instead, he put God above all his trials, and he functioned from a place of identity. The God we serve allowed the saviour that was to redeem mankind to be born in a manger. It's a good reminder to not allow your current situations to dictate the course of your life. Take extreme ownership of your God given assignment, refuse to empower situations and people. As a child of God things don't happen to you, they happen for you! 2. Recognise the author of pain in your life: God does not take any pleasure in our suffering or lack in life. Our pain and troubles have an origin. What brings great deliverance is identifying the root cause. Two causes of pain that are more easily identifiable are the devil, or people. But foolishness and ignorance is a source of pain that causes the most wreck in the life of a child of God. Have you authored your own pain? Although no one wishes to intentionally instigate it, the principles you operate in can ultimately lead to pain. The toughest individual to lead and deal with is yourself. If you fail to lead yourself it will be difficult to fulfill your destiny. Ignorance will cost you. Most people suffer because they don't know what caused their suffering. Ignorance postpones the knowledge of your pain. If there are areas in your life that are constantly in bondage it is because the truth and light of God's Word has not brought illumination; those areas are still under the rule of ignorance. Ignorance is a breeding ground for lies. Lack of knowledge and light is an invitation for ignorance and darkness. It is possible that you are an anointed individual but being anointed in one area doesn't automatically make you skilled in all areas of your life. The mistake that this generation makes is outsourcing their growth and knowledge to others. They become comfortable relying on their pastors, leaders and mentors to feed them with all the information and they never go on a quest to enquire of the Lord on their own. Child of God, your growth is not someone else's responsibility. Develop an appetite to grow in your knowledge and understanding of God and His ways. Do not be too proud to ask for help; pride will kill your help. Lack of passion toward understanding a matter will produce diluted results. Abraham was a man after God's own heart. He unlocked and operated in principles and dimensions even without the help of all the resources we are privileged to today. There's no excuse not to know. Pursue the Lord, go after Him, give Him no rest until He responds. In James 1:2, we are asked to count troubles as a joy as it brings about a testing of our faith. Patience is produced when our faith is tested. This patience, is a steadfastness, a spirit that is unshakeable and has an immovable knowledge of who God is. Perfection is a child of patience. May patience have her complete work in you!

Speaker: Pastor Classy Preston Podcast Summary: In Exodus 33:18, Moses boldly asked, God, Please, show me Your glory. After that, God promised to reveal His presence to Moses & He kept His Promise. Getting to Know God should be the active interest of every human being daily, especially every Christian. God said this to Moses, revealing His character to Moses by words; He proclaimed it to Moses. As this happened, Moses had a powerful spiritual experience rich with feeling and emotion. Yet God didn't want His revelation to only be in feeling and emotion but connecting to the whole person through His Word, which is a powerful resource.

In this episode we are back as we break down the different struggles of life. Fun vs responsibility, young enough to do stuff but old enough to know better, and budgeting are some of the things we break down. We ask the questions why do people who have kids judge people without kids when they say their tired, exhausted or struggling? "We need more men to speak life into male brokenness instead of giving women relationship advice", do you agree? We debut a new segment " does this make sense", as well as get into our two-sense segment and much more. So, sit back and listen as we make sense of it all.

Zindagi jeene ka tareeka, basuri se seekha hai maine, kitne chhed hain seene me, fir bhi gungunata hoon... Almost all human beings have their own set of struggles in life. Some are related to relations, some related to finances, and some related to other aspects of life. We find it difficult to sail through at times as they seem to be never-ending. No one chooses the struggle but the truth is - we can not avoid them. The only thing that we can do is manage our life/ attitude accordingly and deal with them. In this episode, I have shared a beautiful story of a young boy who now, not only inspires me but millions of youth. I'm sure this will help! I'll see you soon. Jai Hind Vivek
THE STRUGGLES OF LIFE Life holds many struggles for us and indeed life itself is a struggle, right from the start; we struggle to be born into this world, and then we struggle to overcome the many obstacles to survival and security and satisfaction. There are the natural or outer struggles that we all have to deal with that belong to the outward circumstances of our lives and they are always in front of us every day. And there are the spiritual or inner life struggles that challenge us to grow in faith and trust in God. Our life is a journey in which we learn to know the difference between the outward natural struggles and the inner spiritual struggles, and we learn to choose which are the struggles worth having and which are not. Many of the stories in the Bible in the Old Testament were preparing us for the understanding of the New Testament truth of having both the natural and the spiritual natures within us and how spiritual transformation by the work of the Holy Spirit is from the natural self that started with Adam into the Spiritual self that was given to us through Jesus – That is the message of the Gospel – Christ dwelling in our hearts by faith. Our natural self struggles with our spiritual self because both of these ‘selves' have different desires. Galatians 5:17 the good things we want to do when the Spirit has his way with us are just the opposite of our natural desires. These two forces within us are constantly fighting each other to win control over us, and our wishes are never free from their pressures. One of these stories that is like a parable of the two selves within, the natural and the spiritual starts in Genesis chapter 25 with a struggle between twin boys, Jacob and Esau, who even at their birth appeared struggling to see who would be the first one to arrive into this world. The Bible says ‘First the natural and then that which is spiritual' (1Corinthians 15:46). Esau was the first of the boys to be born but at the time of birth Jacob could be seen grasping on to Esau's heel, as if to say ‘outa my way, I want to be first'. These boys were the sons of Isaac, who was the son Abraham, the father of the Hebrew Nation. Abraham was told by God that his descendants would inherit the Land of Canaan, the Promised land. So as tradition had it in those days the firstborn son of Isaac received that Patriarchal blessing, which was revered as the highest of spiritual blessings. Esau was in line for he, and his descendants, to inherit all the Promises given to Abraham, and which is passed on down to us spiritually through Jesus. This inheritance was to be imparted at the end of Isaac's life and when it was time to pass it on, and while Esau was out hunting at the time, Jacob cheated his blind Father and older brother by dressing in Esau's clothes in order to smell and feel like his older brother and so fool Isaac into thinking that Jacob was his firstborn son Esau. When Isaac reached out to lay his hands on Jacob to impart the spiritual blessing he thought it was Esau, and this blessing could never be reversed. However Esau and Jacob had two very different longings in life. Esau was a man of the natural, the outdoors, who loved to hunt and to acquire the things of this world, and that is what he struggled for, while Jacob had a heart after God and longed to achieve the spiritual blessings of Abraham and that is what he struggled for. In fact, Jacob probably should not have felt too guilty because one day when they were younger, Jacob had even negotiated for Esau to swap his firstborn Patriarchal blessing for some measly red soup of Jacob's that Esau couldn't take his eyes off. Their future life choices had already been embedded in their hearts. But when Esau finally found out that Jacob had actually received the blessing in the way that he did, he was furious and set out to kill him, so Jacob's next struggle was to escape the wrath of Esau. Isaac stepped in and reassured Jacob that it would all be okay, and sent Jacob away, telling him to head for Haran to visit his Uncle Laban who had two daughters, Rachel and Leah. Soon into the journey he stopped at a place called Bethel and rested. Despite the conniving struggle of Jacob to acquire the blessing God honoured Jacob's longing heart for that spiritual blessing in a vision where The Lord speaks over him and confirms the blessing of Abraham to him with all of the promises of being a father to all of the Jewish nations. Jacob went through further struggles to obtain his two wives Leah and Rachel and to ultimately father the twelve tribes of Israel. Much later in his life on his journey back to the region of his inheritance with his wives and families and servants and cattle, his final struggle was his wrestle with God, who appeared in the form of the Angel of The Lord. Jacob told God that he would not let him go nor cease the struggle till God blessed him. Such was his longing for God's blessing and his holding on that God finished the bout by touching Jacob's hip and putting it out of its socket, leaving Jacob with a permanent limp. God then renamed Jacob ‘Israel' which means ‘having power with God and struggling with God and prevailing'. God used those words over Jacob. When we compare the struggles of Jacob and Esau we see those two longings struggling within us. They represent the two sides of us, our Jacob self and our Esau self. They each wanted different types of blessings. Esau reached out eagerly to struggle for worldly blessing to fill his life while Jacob reached out eagerly to struggle for spiritual blessing to fill his life. OUTER STRUGGLES Everybody has to deal with the outer struggles of life, and for most people this is the only struggle that counts because it mostly deals with the material things of life that they need and want. These things include physical health and well-being, financial security, leisure and recreation and aspirational goals of personal achievement. We all struggle for many of these things, but they are not our highest order of struggle. EXPECTATIONS Most people try hard and struggle against the challenges to achieve results and they expect to get them and are pleased when they do. They expect challenges and competition and adjust their goals and expectations as they go. We all learn how to manage the world's systems and some do better than others. Some prosper for the right reasons and others are greedy and still prosper but for the wrong reasons. In this world of outward struggle there are always disappointments and frustrations and we do our best to learn to live with them. These things are all part of the outer struggle of the circumstances of this world and are different to the inner struggle of the spirit. We all have both of these struggles waiting for us to engage with, but most people ignore the inner struggle of the spiritual life that we have been given to live and think that everything depends upon the management of the outer struggle of life, to have what we need or want or demand. But the Bible tells us that we have both an outer and an inner struggle, in a natural outer life and in an inner spiritual life. As we read before; ‘These two forces within us are constantly fighting each other to win control over us, and our wishes are never free from their pressures (Galatians 5:17)'. By the grace of God we come to a time when the Esau nature in us to win the outward struggle yields to the Jacob nature in us to win the inner spiritual struggle. There are stories in the Bible of this change happening in the lives of people who were challenged to let go of the old life and to take on the new. The parable of the prodigal son shows us how a young man who had given himself to the longing for the things of this world would come to the end of himself and humbly decide to return to his father. There is also the story of Saul the Pharisee who was once arrogantly proud of his religious credentials and who was cruelly persecuting the followers of Jesus when he was stopped in his tracks by a blinding light. And he saw a vision of Jesus who spoke to him with words that penetrated his heart, turning his life around to fully follow him. And when Jacob struggled with God and had his hip joint put out Jacob's heart was filled not only with blessing but with a desire to walk with God, and so he did walk with God, and ended up walking with a limp. The limp reminded him that every step he took showed him his own human weakness and his dependence upon God's strength, and it reminded him of his commitment to go through any struggle to receive the blessing of God in his life, over and above any blessing that the world could offer. That is a shadow of the longing of The Holy Spirit to give us that desire to struggle for the blessing of living out from the inner life of Jesus within us. The Holy Spirit shows us that we also walk with the limp of weakness, our humanity, and we struggle to hold on to God as our strength. The struggle to hold on to God also involves the letting go of things of the world. It is hard to hold on to two things at once, like holding on to God and holding on to resentment and other harmful attitudes in the heart. We end of letting go of one or the other. An excerpt from ‘The Problem of Pain' by C.S. Lewis My own experience is something like this. I am progressing along the path of life in my ordinary contentedly fallen and godless condition, absorbed in a merry meeting with my friends for the morrow or a bit of work that tickles my vanity today, a holiday or a new book, when suddenly a stab of abdominal pain that threatens serious disease, or a headline in the newspapers that threatens us all with destruction, sends this whole pack of cards tumbling down. At first I am overwhelmed, and all my little happiness's look like broken toys. Then, slowly and reluctantly, bit by bit, I try to bring myself into the frame of mind that I should be in at all times. I remind myself that all these toys were never intended to possess my heart, that my true good is in another world and my only real treasure is Christ. And perhaps, by God's grace, I succeed, and for a day or two become a creature consciously dependent on God and drawing its strength from the right sources. But the moment the threat is withdrawn, my whole nature leaps back to the toys: I am even anxious, God forgive me, to banish from my mind the only thing that supported me under the threat because it is now associated with the misery of those few days. Thus the terrible necessity of tribulation is only too clear. God has had me for but forty-eight hours and then only by dint of taking everything else away from me. Let Him but sheathe that sword for a moment and I behave like a puppy when the hated bath is over. I shake myself as dry as I can and race off to reacquire my comfortable dirtiness, if not in the nearest manure heap, at least in the nearest flower bed. And that is why tribulations cannot cease until God either sees us remade or sees that our remaking is now hopeless. So in the world of the outer struggle against the tribulations of this present time of global pandemic, where everything has changed everywhere for everybody at the same time, we are seeing an increase of fear and anxiety in many people concerning the necessary things of life; safety and security and wellbeing. This is changing the nature of peoples' expectations. What and who do people trust? This brings people to a point of choosing what kind of struggle to take on, and that choice is all about what to hold on to and what to let go of. Esau's struggle was to conquer life by holding on to his own strength and not letting go of the things of the world that end up bringing so much stress and anxiety. The Bible calls Esau a ‘profane' man which means not having regard to the things of God and it warns us not to go the way of Esau. Hebrews 12:16 Watch out that no one becomes careless about God as Esau did: he traded his blessing as the oldest son for the pleasure of a single meal When people are not able to let go of things or are deprived of things they want or demand to have, it brings resentment, and we are seeing much of this in these days in which we live and the reaction is to blame someone. Being able to let go of things willingly, brings freedom and peace and the response is to thank someone. Jacob knew that life was a struggle anyway so why not let holding on to God be the struggle of his life. He learned to be able to let go of anything but never to let go of God. Christianity is not about avoiding a struggling life; it's about avoiding a wasted life. It will mean holding on to God in times of uncertainty, and times of difficulty, but it also means holding on to a whole lot of faith and a whole lot of hope. We don't try to make the Esau in us become polite and caring and never get resentful or angry – Esau has to get out of the way for Jacob. It was Jacob who stood toe to toe with God and understood that his weakness was the welcome sign for the strength of God to possess his heart and mind. If our hope is the same as the hope that the world has, then there is no basis for anyone in the world to ask us the reason for the hope we have. 1Peter 3:15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. Holding on to God is not a passive waiting around for something to happen but it is holding on to a loving Jesus toe to toe, with a full hope and expectation of God bringing his loving goodness into our lives. Romans 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

It’s going to be so exciting to see what He has in store for us on Sunday. This week we will end our series through Psalm 23 as we look at verse 6 (NCV), “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” This one verse is packed with enough amazing stuff to change your outlook as well as the rest of your life. I can’t wait to unpack all that it has for us. I look forward to worshipping with each and every one of you tomorrow morning @ 10am. Let’s do our best to pack out Westside and don’t forget to reach out and bring someone with you. Love you all... Jerry
2020-02-09 - Finding Hope in the Struggles of Life - Week 05 Hey all... We had another amazing Sunday last week. God just keeps doing some pretty awesome things through us here at Westside and I’m thankful that He called me to be a part of His amazing work. It’s going to be so exciting to see what He has in store for us tomorrow. This week we will continue unpacking Psalm 23 as we look at verses 4-5 (NCV), “Even if I walk through a very dark valley, I will not be afraid, because you are with me. Your rod and your shepherd’s staff comfort me. You prepare a meal for me in front of my enemies.” The reality of life is this; the world we live in can be a very dark, scary and stormy place to live. But in spite of that, I believe God wants to remind us that in the midst of the scary storms and dark valleys of life...hope is found in Jesus, our Shepherd. Every week of this series has been amazing but this week, is one you don’t want to miss. You may not be going through a valley right now, but I guarantee you that you will at some point. It’s a part of life. Also, you probably know someone who is, so reach out and invite them to come with you. I can’t wait to unpack this with you tomorrow morning @ 10am. Here’s what’s happening at Westside... • Our new “Community Group” got off to a great start last week. They meet on Sunday mornings @ 9am. It’s going to be so exciting to see what He has in store for us this Sunday. This week we will continue unpacking Psalm 23 as we look at the last part of verse 3, “He guides me along the right paths for His namesake.” Now, this tells me 2 things; first of all, there is a right path that we are to be on and secondly, it’s not about us but it’s about Him. He’s the one who is supposed to get all the glory. I can’t wait to unpack this short phrase with you this Sunday morning. 2020-01-26 - Finding Hope in the Struggles of Life - Week 03 Author Philip Yancey says that, “adversities”, “hardships and the “struggles of life” are “the gifts nobody wants.” And just the thought of these, can create fear, tension and stress that at times...is hard to overcome. Unfortunately, this is the reality that we all live in today. Sometimes we are going to go through times of struggles and adversities where our faith will be tested, and we will wonder if God is on vacation. And whether you want to believe me or not, even though that’s how we feel, we can still find hope. In fact, there’s a great example of this in the Old Testament from the life of David. During a dark season of life, when his son was trying to take his life, David discovered hope. It was during this time that he wrote Psalm 23 and his hope was found as he wrote verse 1... “The Lord is my Shepherd; I have everything I need!” This Sunday morning January 12th, we’re going to begin a 6-week journey called, “Finding Hope in the Struggles of Life”. This journey will hopefully help us to change how we respond to life’s struggles as we dive deeply into the depths of Psalm 23. Let me encourage you to get the word out and invite friends, family, co-workers, the guy or gal on the street...actually anyone and everyone you meet. Can't wait to dive into this amazing Psalm. Brooke Siem is a true renaissance woman. She’s a professional chef (and Food Network Chopped Champion), world traveler (30+ countries), breathwork coach (more nasal breathing, please!), and grief/mental health advocate. Her broad range of life experience helps her to connect to clients while providing actionable tools that help them navigate the mental and emotional challenges of modern living. She believes in the power of using life’s triggers as a roadmap to healing, with self-awareness and self-compassion as the driving force for positive change. Brooke had been prescribed antidepressant and anti-anxiety drugs at 15 years old after her father's sudden death. An unexpected opportunity for a life abroad sparked the realization that she had been heavily medicated for half of her life. She decided to make a massive change. First, she booked a one way ticket to Malaysia. Then, she got off all the prescription drugs. Two years and 19 countries later, Brooke's primary focus is on advocating for mental health and wellness without the use of antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs. Though she believes that these sorts of drugs can have their place on the road to healing, her own experience has taught her that these medications are often poorly monitored by doctors, prescribed without thought of the long term consequences, and prioritize the notion of "existing" versus thriving. Brooke's goal is to show that it is possible to live a joyful, centered life without the use of antidepressants, no matter how far down the rabbit hole we once were. We get into the backstory that lead to being on medication for a decade and a half, the catalyst to come off them, the process of doing that (and what she discovered about herself through that very difficult journey), and how she's lived her life since. Key Points from the Episode with Brooke Siem: Brooke had built a life in New York City around a bakery she found success at, but was also struggling with the demands of New York (and the costs of living there). Despite the bakery’s success, the cost of doing business in New York were so high that it made it hard to feel like you had real success. She found herself struggling to fit in and find her path or her opportunities, and was judging herself for not being able to find them in New York – a place with so many opportunities abounding. Seeing people in successful paths only compounded that as she felt inferior to these other people who seemed to know where they’re going, and the competitive nature within her made her feel like she wasn’t winning in the path she had created. When her bakery’s lease was coming up for renewal in 2017, her world changed. She got an opportunity through a program called “Remote Year” to travel around the world and work remotely with 70 other people in the program, and she went for it. The only trick was that her work – owning a bakery – wasn’t something she could do remotely. She figured she wouldn’t get accepted into the program anyway, so she didn’t let that stop her. She figured if she made it, she’d figure out how to make it work. And that’s what happened. She felt she was at such a low point that she new she needed to get out of her situation and would regret not doing it if she could. This all brought about another major change. When Brooke was 15, her father suddenly passed away, and she was subsequently put on a cocktail of drugs to manage the emotional impact. She went through all of life’s major, pivotal growth periods – adolescence, high school, college, entering the work world and becoming independent, without the drugs effecting her mind. As she was turning 30 and looking at this nomadic existence, she realized she wouldn’t be able to get her prescriptions refilled reliably, so she suddenly realized she needed to find a path off of them, which also helped her realize she had been on them half of her life already and that got her wondering who she would be without them. This sparked a very fast path to coming off the drugs so she would be clear by the time the trip came just six months later. As many of the drugs have long half-lives and withdrawals, this would be both tricky and intense. When this all started, she described her feelings as misery, suicidal and essentially just waiting to die. It went so far that she found an online life expectancy calculator, got a date when it said she would die, and put it in her calendar. She actually quoted the time remaining when we were talking. In the midst of this withdrawal, Brooke actually was chosen to compete on the cooking show, Chopped, which was incredibly hard in and of itself, but so much harder because of the emotional impact of the drug withdrawal. She actually went on to winning her competition despite what she was going through. She described seeing herself on the show as watching a twin who wasn’t her. Brooke touched on her competitive side, which manifested in a competitive dancing background when she was younger, which obviously served her well on Chopped (and other things in her life). She described coming off one of the drugs specifically, where her hearing became painfully heightened, making her hyper sensitive to everything around her (and NYC not being a particularly easy place to be that way). She described it as having all of these emotions and sensations bottled up for years, and then coming out all at once, which can feel unbearable. She described the feelings she had through her therapy approach while coming off the drugs, and this feeling like her real feelings had been stifled and she had a dream where a rope was being pulled from deep in her throat, and that symbolized a freeing. It lead her to need to go outside one night and scream at the top of her lungs to physically release all that was inside, which was a pivotal, transformative moment for her in facing all that was inside. Ultimately, the travel was a very clarifying thing for her because it helped her realize that the only constant in her life was her. She was able to completely isolate all of the variables in her life, which changed each time she moved to a new place, and found the way she could be the grounding center and could learn and grow in each place she went to. For example, with her heightened sensitivity to noise, traveling to Malaysia was incredibly difficult as the noise and bustle was even greater than in NYC. Had she not done that, she wouldn’t have gotten as good at dealing with the sensory-overload of life as she became after a month in Kuala Lumpur. If you’ve never heard of David Goggins, just picture a superhero story come to real life. After a devastating childhood that left him broken and lacking ambition, everything changed. He set his sights on becoming a Navy SEAL, and in the process became the only individual in U.S. military history to go through Air Force Tactical Air Control Party Training, Army Ranger school and 3 “Hell Weeks.” He not only accomplished his goal of becoming a Navy SEAL, but then went on to earn a reputation as one of the world’s premier endurance athletes. I was extremely proud to introduce David and his incredible life story to our audience at the 2017 Success Summit. When we are faced with personal struggles, we look for guidance, resolution and peace. We look within ourselves and to others to help us overcome, but as we realize our limitations we seek heaven's help through prayer. Prayer is a Christian's best first response.
