If you have a gas car, you never really need to double-check which gas station you go to when you fill up. Every gas station in North America is compatible with every personal vehicle. This standardized fuel network enables our gas-driven transportation system in a way that most of us don't notice on a day-to-day basis. If you have an electric vehicle, though, you do notice this. Or rather, you notice that a similar network is missing. There are currently 3 different charging standards for EV's in the US, so drivers have to routinely check maps to find compatible chargers or purchase and travel with expensive adaptors. The lack of charger standardization and availability has stood as one of the larger barriers to EV adoption in the US, which currently sit at a paltry 6% of total vehicle sales. This needs to change quickly in order to meet the ambitious goals set by the Biden administration and car manufacturers and to eliminate the use of fossil fuels as quickly as possible. Fortunately, the majority of the major US-based automakers announced this summer that they would be transitioning to Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) by 2025, opening a path to total standardization across the US EV charging network. This week, we're diving into how and why this standardization process unfolded and why technical standards matter when it comes to technological transformation. We're joined this week by Andrew Russell, Officer-In-Charge and Professor of Science and Technology History and SUNY Polytechnic Institute.Subscribe on your favorite podcast platform to never miss an episode! This episode is part of our Bleeding Edge series, where we focus on new and emerging technologies and topics that push the envelope. Our guest is Major Michael Kanaan, a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, and an officer who is globally recognized as an expert on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). Our discussion strives to define AI and ML, and highlight its prevalence and importance in today's society and for the future. In 2018 Maj. Kanaan served as Co-Chair at the Headquarters of the U.S. Air Force Cross-Functional Team on Artificial Intelligence, which authored the Air Force's artificial intelligence strategy, guided integration plans, and synchronized efforts across the Total Force Enterprises, while liaising with the Joint AI Center. In 2020 he became the Director of Operations at the Department of the Air Force / MIT Artificial Intelligence Accelerator which is the Air Force's flagship artificial intelligence partnership with the MIT Computer Science and AI Laboratory (CSAIL) and MIT Lincoln Laboratory. Our interview took place during his time in this position. In June 2022, Maj. Kanaan assumed the position of Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force Scholar Masters Fellow, where he is pursuing a Master's degree in Public Administration at Harvard Kennedy School. Each of those positions is significant in their own right, but one of the foundation-setting highlights of Maj. Kanaan's career was his role as Officer In Charge of ACES HY (Airborne Cueing and Exploitation System Hyperspectral) Operations & Hyperspectral Analysis, NASIC, where he directed an 18 person team that leveraged scientific and technical intelligence sensor processing to exploit and disseminate hyperspectral data/imagery for U.S. Air Forces Central Command in support of forces deployed for Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Our discussion strives to put AI and ML into context for the Air Force. We discuss the AlphaDogfight Trials, a project led by DARPA's Strategic Technology Office which is designed to demonstrate advanced algorithms capable of performing simulated, within-visual-range air combat maneuvering – commonly known as dogfighting. The trials were designed to energize and expand a base of AI developers for DARPA's Air Combat Evolution (ACE) program. ACE seeks to automate air-to-air combat and build human trust in AI as a step toward improved human-machine teaming. Our discussion also delves into AI and ML as potential enablers for manned-unmanned teaming and for the USAF Skyborg and Loyal Wingman projects. We also discuss the book that Maj. Kanaan authored in his personal capacity, called T-Minus AI, where he explains AI from a human-oriented perspective so readers can grasp what we should know about modern computing, AI, machine learning, and its global implications. Our wide-ranging conversation is incredibly informative and thought provoking. All views presented are his own and do not necessarily reflect the stance of the US Government, the Department of Defense, the US Air Force, or any other Government agency. We thank Maj. BE MILITARY MINDED. A lot of people think that leadership means having all the answers. Barking orders at your team, hoping they stay in line and obey. Pretending to know it all even when you don’t. True leadership is understanding human nature. What if leaders accepted responsibility for any mistakes made on their teams? We have to stop thinking of leadership as a destination. It is a journey where we listen, learn, and strategize with our teams, not for them. It’s not about ego; it’s about humility, balance, accountability, and execution. In today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I talk about the art of leadership with a retired Navy SEAL officer and a business consultant: Jocko Willink. Jocko Willink is a decorated retired Navy SEAL officer, author of the book ‘Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win,’ and co-founder of Echelon Front, where he is a leadership instructor, speaker, and executive coach. Jocko spent 20 years in the U.S. Navy SEAL Teams, starting as an enlisted SEAL and rising the ranks to become a SEAL officer. As commander of SEAL Team Three’s Task Unit Bruiser during the battle of Ramadi, he orchestrated SEAL operations that helped the “Ready First” Brigade of the U.S. Army’s First Armored Division bring stability to the violent, war-torn city. Task Unit Bruiser became the most highly decorated Special Operations Unit of the Iraq War. Jocko returned from Iraq to serve as Officer-In-Charge of Training for all West Coast SEAL Teams. There he spearheaded the development of leadership training and personally instructed and mentored the next generation of SEAL leaders who have continued to perform with great success on the battlefield. In 2010, Jocko retired from the Navy and launched Echelon Front with Leif Babin, where he teaches the leadership principles he learned on the battlefield to help others lead and win. Jocko has put together leadership principles that will help you become a successful leader. So get ready to learn the art of strategy and leadership on Episode 871. Some Questions I Ask: What did you learn when you took on the leadership role as a Navy SEAL? (09:00) How do you make sure that your intent is felt all of the way down the chain of command? (17:30) Do you have a mission and mantra for your company? (23:00) Is there a connection between leadership and human nature? (36:30) How important is feedback from your team? (52:00) What’s the most important relationship we have in our lives? (1:10:30) In This Episode You Will Learn: The toughest challenges when becoming a Navy SEAL leader. (9:00) The most humbling moment on the battlefield. (11:45) How to take responsibility when you’re in a big organization. (19:30) Why leadership is about understanding human nature. (36:30) Two things leaders can do to improve immediately. (54:00) How to handle yourself when your ego wants to respond. (01:00:10) How to take ownership of your decisions in life. In this episode, I go on location to meet with Lt. Cdr. Roberta O’Brien at the National Maritime College of Ireland. Roberta has made Irish Naval History a few times in her career, so far! She became the first female to join the Irish Navy when becoming a cadet in 1995. She went on to become the first female Lt Commander to take charge of the LÉ Aisling a ship in 2008. And that’s just a couple of the firsts that we talk about during the very interesting and enjoyable conversation we had back in October. Another first for Roberta was when she played hurling with the boys’ team when she was in school. She learned a lot these skills from her brother and she took a great interest in the game, along with Tennis at a young age. Growing up Roberta was big into sports but she always enjoyed studying so PE teaching was an early aim. It wasn’t until she was in Fifth year before a spark was ignited in the Navy when she heard a Captain of a Ship give a talk. From here, Roberta started to set her sights on joining the Navy. She always wanted to be on the operations side of the ship instead of being an engineer so she could ultimately take command of a ship. Currently, Lt. Cdr. O’Brien is the Officer In Charge of Training School responsible for ensuring 43 potential and young officers are fully trained and equipped prior to taking up their first sea-going appointment. Here is a view into what we discuss during this fascinating show:•Learnings from a tough three months during cadet training school•How the environment changed in the Navy from Roberta started•Interpersonal Skills training that helped with EQ, Listening and Awareness•Leadership, Management, and Marketing Training •Psychology and Confirmation Bias •Challenges in the first couple of years of training and some relationship challenges •The Role of Mentors and Coaches during the initial years rising up the ranks•Spending three years in NUIG studying Science •Planning & Plotting out a path to the goal of commanding a ship •Getting the opportunity, ahead of her time, to take command of the LÉ Aisling in 2008•Some Key Decisions Made during the Command•Life After Command – Finding new challenges, goals, and responsibilities to reset focus •How Training & Learnings all come together during more recent roles in the service •A Typical Day Now in the Current Role as Officer of Training of Cadets. •A Deep Dive into the 1% Tips that Roberta Shares:oSetting Goals, working on tasks, and prioritizing on The Nearest ‘Crocodiles’oBeing a Night Owl to get Work Done oHow to develop and remain focus and present – touching on Mindfulness oJournaling and Keeping a Diary oInbox Management oSleep Patterns especially on ship time oDealing with Fear of Failure oIntuition and Decision Making – recalling some instances from the command on the shipoCollaborationoSuccess and its meaning oAdvice – Given or Gives out!oOne Person You’d Bring to a Dinner I hope you enjoy the episode.
