"The Peasants" had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival after many years of hard work from directors DK Welchman and Hugh Welchman, who had a massive task in front of them to live up to expectations following the Oscar-nominated success of "Loving Vincent." Told with the same meticulous hand-painted techniques as that film, this adaptation of Władysław Reymont's Nobel Prize-winning novel of the same name is another huge milestone in the world of animation. The film's composer, Łukasz "L.U.C." Rostkowski, was kind enough to spend a few minutes of his time discussing his work on the film, which is just as beautiful to listen to as the film's visuals are to look at. Please be sure to check out the film when it releases in the U.S. from Sony Pictures Classics on January 26th, which is up for your consideration in all eligible categories at this year's Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score. Nowy Tygodnik Kulturalny - nowe miejsce, znani goście, lubiani prowadzący, nowa energia i emocje!
Najpierw został nakręcony, a później wszystkie sceny były namalowane — wyjaśnia Piotr Markiewicz. — Wystawiłem 10/10 z wielką radością — mówi o filmie "Chłopi" gość odcinka, Jan Kapturkiewicz — Zrobiłem to z wielką radością, bo robię to rzadko.
Album promują single: "Za zimną wodę", "O czymś innym" i "Do zobaczenia do jutra". Film "Chłopi" to polski kandydat do Oscara. Powstał na podstawie dzieła Władysława Reymonta. Scenariusz i reżyseria DK Welchman i Hugh Welchman.

Directed by DK Welchman & Hugh Welchman, The Peasants is based non Wladyslaw Reymont's novel of the same name. Set in early 20th Century Poland, the story follows the Jagna (Kamila Urvedowska), the most beautiful and charming woman in the village of Lipce. When she marries Maciej Boryna, a weathy widower (and the village's ‘First Farmer'), she does so out of obligation rather than love. Fading away emotionally, Jagna soon rediscovers her passion in the arms of Antek, causing chaos within her family and the village itself. In this 1on1, we speak to DK Welchman and Hugh Welchman about the tactile nature of animation, the beauty of the 'coarse' and the power of choice.

Six years after DK and Hugh Welchman changed animation and cinema forever with their Oscar-nominated, fully painted feature film Loving Vincent, about the life of iconic artist Vincent Van Gogh, the directors have created another incredible, entirely painted animated feature. The Peasants, based on the classic story, just premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. I had the chance to screen the film and speak with the Welchmans about advancing the art form with a completely different story… and how you can own a piece of it.
Sage returns for his next pick as we review Loving Vincent, a movie about Vincent Van Gogh, animated by hand-painted oil paintings. This episode was recorded during the first Friday of March Madness so basketball is a small topic but the main focus of the "post-credit" portion of the podcast. The three talk about the gorgeous animation, the lackluster story, and more! This movie was directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman. GD4AM: 87/100 IMDb: 7.8/10 Metacritic: 62/100 RT: 62% In a story depicted in oil-painted animation, a young man comes to the last hometown of painter Vincent van Gogh to deliver the troubled artist's final letter and ends up investigating his final days there. This movie is currently streaming on AMC+. NEXT MOVIE REVIEW: Donnie Brasco (1997) currently available for rent on most VOD platforms.

On the podcast this week, Steven and Sean are trying to make a postal delivery from the late, great Vincent van Gogh, but end up getting caught up with solving quite the mystery with the 2017 film from Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, Loving Vincent. Man, we feel wiped out just watching this film. How impossibly exhausting must it have been to create all the thousands upon thousands of hand-painted oil works that make up this astonishing thing? I mean, sure, the artists who worked on this one must have enjoyed doing the work. It’s not like they were forced to paint an entire film at gunpoint. At least, I hope that’s not what happened. Those poor artists, if that was the case. But it probably wasn’t. Maybe. Technical stuff aside for a moment, this film is a clever way to introduce people to the life and story of now-über renowned artist Vincent van Gogh. In his time, though, he was hardly known, save for a small handful of people who were either delighted by his eccentric personality or disgusted by it. He painted so much beauty, but never sold any of it. He lived a tragic, painful life that ended all too abruptly. It’s a shame that’s how things ended for him given how appreciated he became. We get to experience all this through the eyes and travels of one Armand Roulin, whose father, Joseph Roulin, was Vincent’s postman and friend. Joseph tasks Armand with delivering one final letter to Vincent’s brother, Theo. While trying to find Theo, Armand meets an assortment of unique people who knew Vincent, whom all tell stories about his life. Through these interactions we learn more about the person Vincent was, and not just the legend he became. It’s a lovely, melancholy story told in such a unique fashion: the entire damn film is done in oil paint! Every single second. Every single frame! It’s all a living, moving work of painted art. It really is phenomenal, and is something that everyone should experience. We tend to think of animated films as something that’s drawn with a pencil or molded with a computer, but this one is crafted by a brush. It’s special, engaging, and worth your time. Dicas do episódio. We take another science-fiction-adjacent journey into the unknown via Alex Garland’s new ANNIHILATION, a distinctive cinematic vision that nonetheless calls back to Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1979 film STALKER in terms of its structure and filmmaking — if not quite the specifics of its dreamlike narrative and themes. After discussing what puzzled and delighted us about ANNIHILATION, we discuss what connects it to STALKER, and how both challenge viewers in their own way. On the first segment of today’s show, host Tom Breen talks with Allan Appel and Lucy Gellman about LOVING VINCENT, a new animated film from directors Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman that gives the Citizen Kane treatment to the life of Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh: through a series of flashbacks and second-hand stories, we see the rise and fall of the troubled and inspired life of this eccentric painter, focusing in on the final days of his life in the rural French town of Auvers. Unlike most animated movies, this story is composed of tens of thousands of hand-drawn oil paintings by over one hundred contributing artists, all simulating the heavy brushstrokes and ebullient style of the movie’s namesake. On the second segment of the show, Breen is joined by Lucy McClure, Debbie Hesse, and Trish Clark to talk about the Nasty Women Film Event, a screening night of locally made feminist films that will be taking place at the Ely Center of Contemporary Art on Election day, next Tuesday, in honor of, or in defiance of, the anniversary of Donald Trump’s election as president.
