Ben and Nemone discuss Helen McCrory's iconic Poly Shelby from Peaky Blinders. She's a devout Catholic, but up to her neck in the murky world of bootlegging and murder. Nemone gets into the thorny question of how she might match those up, and reveals how each of us has a ‘silent observer' inside. We also dive into the history of women's rights in 1920s England. Look out for some killer lines from our Polly, too. If you like this, you'll love our look at Cersei Lannister and how to lead violent men using more than physical force, and the toll that takes. Crawling out of the swamp to close out Season 3, Eric and Bradford are joined by Broadway actor-musician Matt Saldivar for a rollicking discussion of Neil Jordan's grand guignol ode to undying love. With a cast headed by Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt as comedy duo Lestat and Louis, interesting turns from Kirsten Dunst, Antonio Banderas, Christian Slater, and Stephen Rea, Anne Rice adapting her novel, and great effects work by Stan Winston, there's enough baroque to ba-reak the bank... but is it, as one character says, "of the Mississippi"? An uneven tone, plot threads that go nowhere, and SO MUCH FIRE threaten to sink the #1 horror movie of 1994, but not even THIS podcast can keep a bloodthirsty creature of the night down. Netflix is set to breathe new life into the acclaimed British crime drama Peaky Blinders by developing two spin-off series. Following the ambiguous conclusion of its sixth and final season in 2022, the streaming giant plans a sequel set in Boston and a prequel centred around Polly Gray. The Boston sequel may unravel the tale of US crime boss Jack Nelson, who previously clashed with the Birmingham gang. Simultaneously, the prequel will likely delve into Polly Gray's past, exploring the character's history. Her character was killed off in the story after actress Helen McCrory tragically passed away in 2021. These spin-offs mark Netflix's ambitious move to expand the beloved Peaky Blinders universe, promising viewers a deeper exploration of the show's captivating narratives and characters.
Yorkshire born actor, Samuel Edward-Cook made his screen debut in the BBC One series LAND GIRLS, before landing the role of Danny Whizz-Bang in the highly acclaimed and BAFTA award-winning crime drama PEAKY BLINDERS alongside Cillian Murphy, Joe Cole and Helen McCrory. Other television credits include the ITV miniseries BRIEF ENCOUNTERS, the ITV anthology series INNOCENT, the long-running BBC series SILENT WITNESS, and the Channel 4 comedy-drama PURE. Samuel will soon appear playing Ceri Davies in BETTER, a BBC series by Sister Pictures, the production company behind THIS IS GOING TO HURT, CHERNOBYL and GANGS OF LONDON, among many others. The crime drama follows a corrupt police detective who undergoes a major moral awakening and makes amends of her wrongdoings of the past. The series will also star Leila Farzad (I HATE SUZIE), Andrew Buchan and Anton lesser. Also in 2023, Samuel will play Isaac Hartley in Shane Meadows' highly anticipated BBC drama THE GALLOWS POLE, based on the novel of the same name by Benjamin Myers. Loosely based on true events, the six-part series set in 18th century Yorkshire will recount the rise and fall of David Hartley and the Crag Vale Coiners. The series will also star Michael Socha (PAPILLON), George Mackay (1917), Thomas Turgoose (THIS IS ENGLAND), Tom Burke (THE SOUVENIR) and Sophie McShera (DOWNTON ABBEY). As well as his screen credits, Samuel has numerous theatre credits, including BOYS for Headlong, directed by Robert Icke, Matthew Quintal in Richard Bean's PITCAIRN directed by Max Stafford-Clark, TITUS ANDRONICUS at Shakespeare's Globe, Edmund in Lucy Bailey's contemporary adaptation of KING LEAR, staring David Haigh and portraying Captain Wentworth in the Royal Exchange Theatre production of PERSUASION. His performance as Haimon in Ivo van Hove's production of ANTIGONE alongside Juliette Binoche attracted rave reviews, with theatre critic Stephen Collins praising his “passion” and "extraordinary range of emotions”. The play itself was described as “undeniably impressive” by The Independent and as a "production that combines a sombre aesthetic beauty with a sense of the ambivalence at the heart of Sophocles's play” by The Guardian.
British actor Damien Lewis will return as Bobby Axelrod in the seventh season of the Showtime original series Billions. The actor recently shared the news with host Stephen Colbert on The Late Show. Lewis was the top-billed star but departed the series after season five, following the tragic passing of his wife Helen McCrory. He will not be returning as a series regular but will appear in episodes one and six of the upcoming season.
The second part of our chat with Damian Lewis is studded with reminiscences about his late wife, Helen McCrory. Damian speaks openly and beautifully about the play on which they fell in love, their contrasting experiences at drama school, and the time he watched her walk mesmerisingly onstage in Uncle Vanya, pour a cup of tea, leave without saying a word and have the audience in the palm of her hand. Damian also recalls a humiliating acting experience as a youngster, how he shouted his way into playing The Dane on a windswept outdoor stage as a 24-year-old, and the very unique and particular challenges of mastering the dialogue of the great David Mamet. Helen McCrory fans like myself were likely shocked and excited that the lovely actress was to play a female Dr. Frankenstein. We know this only from the title however since her name is not mentioned as such. Along with the change of gender, this “incarnation” of the mythic monster film is highly protean. The things I liked best about it were: 1) The persona of a mother to the being, 2) The hideous yet credible creature, and 3) the veer away from reanimation in place of creation at a cellular level, like cloning it would seem. You could correctly say that there is a motherly-like connection between Frankenstein, the novel monster, and his scientific creator. For that reason, this aspect is not a stretch. Still, it's developed so well the horror is palpable and relatable to any parent. Every parent can relate with the situation in which the Dr. attempts to bring her child back to life. This film is supposedly modern so it doesn't have the ghoulish charm of the old ones. At the same time, this scenario of the doctor as a mother to the monster speaks new volumes we could talk about. I recommend it on that aspect alone but there are other great attributes of this film. The second thing to love about this film is the creature. It looks scary. There are shots where he's moving where you can really believe the actor looks like that. If you've seen Tobe Hooper's “Funhouse” film, you might compare the two creatures. What's weird about it is it formed through cellular division and mutation as opposed to the Dr. digging up a corpse and reanimating it. In the tender shots with mom, the eyes are quite expressive. I have to admit I didn't expect such a well formed creature in a BBC movie. I was wrong, it's insanely cool looking. For the third thing, I want to share further about the angle of the film regarding cellular fusion and cloning. Have you ever seen the “Dolly” lamb that was cloned? It's creepy as all get up. The idea of a living thing that was born in a lab to me is terrifying. In the same breath I will say however it's fascinating from a scientific perspective. It would have been cool to see the traditional path of these movies run its course but they made something new work. The more modern movies do that and as a result many have been made and have held the public's full attention and praise. There is a sequence of images of amoebas and paramecium under the microscope. I loved that so much. The idea that life is relentless and will fight to live and even evolve. In conclusion I highly recommend this film. It's streaming now on Amazon Prime. I hope you'll subscribe to my podcast and blog to get the latest monster movie I review in this series. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/damien-riley/message

On this very special episode of Mummy Dearest Podcast, Zach and Sloane unwrap season 6 of Peaky Blinders! It was um, in a word, disappointing. The season felt slow and then rushed and they gave us so much Lizzie, which no one asked for (especially not Tommy.) They gave us big character deaths, they gave us tuberculosis, they gave us opium addiction, but they failed to give us heart and soul and the stuff that Peaky Blinders fans want and need. Overall the season wasn't great but that doesn't mean we won't wait with breath that is bated for the Peaky Blinders movie which will be released in 40 years. Following Tommy’s failed suicide attempt, he receives a call from Captain Swing who takes credit for foiling Mosley’s attempted assassination. She returns the bodies of Polly, Aberama and Barney, who were killed during the assassination attempt. The entire Shelby family gather for Polly’s funeral with Michael swearing revenge on Tommy for his role in Polly’s death. In 1933, four years later, Tommy, now sober, sets up a meeting with an estranged Michael and business associates of Jack Nelson, a south Boston gang leader. Meanwhile, back in Small Heath, Arthur's drug addiction continues to spiral following Polly’s death. Later, Tommy is phoned by Lizzie who announces she, Charles and their daughter Ruby cannot travel to Canada due to Ruby’s sudden illness. Believing her sickness is a message and gypsy related, Tommy decides to return to England. This episode was dedicated to Helen McCrory, and rather than music, the end credits comprised the song of a male blackbird.Peaky Blinders by Story Archives is brought to you by the Soapbox Podcast Network.

Set in Birmingham, England, the series stars Cillian Murphy as Thomas "Tommy" Shelby, the head of the "Peaky Blinders" crime gang, and follows his and his family's exploits following the direct aftermath of the First World War, as well as Tommy's rise to power over the years in which his influence has reached beyond where and what he knows. Something a bit different on Stories of our times today.Today's show consists of a recording that was thought to have been lost, of an electric performance at the 2014 Times and Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival - one of the most memorable in the festival's history - by husband and wife Damian Lewis and Helen McCrory of love poems from the poetry collection The Love Book edited by Allie Esiri.Earlier this summer, Damian rediscovered a recording of the event, which he offers here now to listeners as a tribute to his wife, who died in April this year at the age of 52. 'There was no talking, no one was on their phones, no one was snacking...all the things I hate about the cinema'. [audio mp3="https://media.radiocms.net/uploads/2021/06/08102527/CillianMurphy_0806.mp3"][/audio] When Cillian Murphy went to see 'A Quiet Place', he was mesmerised by the response the audience had to everything from the storyline, to the script and the sound. So, it should be no surprise to see the Cork man in the long-awaited sequel. Speaking to Dermot and Dave, Cillian revealed that he thinks the only way to watch the latest installment in the story is 'in a dark room surrounded by strangers', though, this might just be to hide the fact that he eats jalapeno on his popcorn. And of course, we couldn't chat to Tommy Shelby himself and not find out what's in store for the final series of Peaky Blinders. Cillian revealed a little bit of what we can expect when it lands on our screens, and paid tribute to his friend and co-star Helen McCrory. You can catch the chat in full by clicking play in the post.
