This episode marks a new emphasis for On Becoming. While I have referred to trauma before, here it becomes a lens through which we examine high-control religion (like Evangelicalism). I begin by considering the role of cruelty in Christianity, though a recent article by David French. Next, I turn to Alice Miller's book The Drama of the Gifted Child as a way of thinking about how children are often treated with a lack of respect and thus traumatised. Finally, I turn to James Dobson to work out the ways in which trauma and violence are part of most Evangelical's upbringing.
Reconnecting with Your Inner ChildThis episode explores the concept of the inner child and its role in shaping our adult lives. The hosts discuss how reconnecting with this part of ourselves can lead to greater peace, authenticity, and self-compassion. What is the Inner Child? The inner child is like a time capsule within us, holding emotions, memories, and experiences from childhood. It influences how we react to situations, often resurfacing in moments of strong emotion. Personal Story of the AuthorThe author shares their experience of being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at 13. While they felt pride in being part of a pioneering treatment, their parents' fear and anxiety deeply impacted them. This story illustrates how childhood experiences shape our emotional responses as adults. Psychological FoundationsThe inner child concept is rooted in psychology, with Carl Jung's child archetype symbolizing potential and renewal, John Bradshaw highlighting the wounded inner child and its impact on adult behavior, and Alice Miller emphasizing childhood trauma and the healing power of validation. How to Reconnect with Your Inner Child Self-reflection: Noticing emotional triggers and behaviors. Journaling: Writing letters to and from your inner child to express unspoken emotions. Meditation & Visualization: Imagining a safe space for your inner child and offering them love. Therapy: A structured approach for those with significant childhood trauma, using techniques like role-playing. The Healing Process Reconnecting with your inner child isn't about dwelling on the past but offering understanding and compassion. This process can bring clarity, self-compassion, and a rediscovery of joy and creativity. Healing is always possible, and embracing the inner child can lead to greater authenticity and fulfillment. The episode ends with a thought-provoking question: What would your inner child say to you today? This serves as an invitation for listeners to explore their inner world with curiosity and kindness.Key Takeaways:Final ReflectionAbout the Power of PeacefulnessThe Power of Peacefulness is a blog dedicated to helping professional women cultivate inner peace in their careers, relationships, and personal growth. This week: Part 2 in a series of podcasts in conjunction with the China Research Center at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). The series, titled "Studying China in the Absence of Access: Rediscovering a Lost Art," ran from September to November 2021, and featured four eminent "Pekingologists," or specialists in Chinese elite politics: Joseph Fewsmith, Thomas Fingar, Alice Miller, and Fred Teiwes. The talks were later published in a volume you can download here. The series is introduced by Andrew Mertha, George and Sadie Hyman, Professor of China Studies and director of the SAIS China Research Center, and each lecture includes a moderated discussion with Andy. After this series, I'll also be sharing with you a second series of lectures titled "Studying China from Elsewhere," which will include talks by Maria Repnikova, Mike Lampton, William Hurst, and Maggie Lewis — many of whom Sinica listeners will know from the show.Alice Lyman Miller is a leading scholar of Chinese politics and foreign policy. A research fellow at the Hoover Institution and lecturer in East Asian Studies at Stanford University, she previously served as an analyst at the CIA and editor of China Leadership Monitor. Miller's work has been instrumental in decoding the opaque world of Chinese elite politics, with a particular focus on political discourse and leadership transitions. Her major publications include Becoming Asia: Change and Continuity in Asian International Relations Since World War II (2011).Joseph Fewsmith is one of the foremost experts on contemporary Chinese politics, known for his in-depth analysis of political reform, elite competition, and policy shifts under the Chinese Communist Party. A professor of international relations and political science at Boston University, Fewsmith has authored seminal books such as China Since Tiananmen: The Politics of Transition (2001) and Rethinking Chinese Politics (2021), which challenge conventional wisdom on China's political system. His work blends rigorous historical analysis with close readings of official discourse. In this episode, Dr. Ettensohn explores the profound insights of Alice Miller regarding the emotional abandonment and narcissistic use of the child, focusing on how these early dynamics shape pathological narcissism and Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). Drawing from Miller's groundbreaking work, Dr. Ettensohn examines how a child growing up in a narcissogenic environment learns to adapt by creating a false self—a facade designed to secure love and avoid rejection in a world where their authentic self is not welcome. The episode explores the function of grandiosity as a defense mechanism—an unconscious strategy to deny the pain of unmet emotional needs—and its counterpart, depression (narcissistic vulnerability), which turns the pain inward. Both defenses serve to protect the individual from confronting a devastating loss: the realization that the love and support they needed was not available. The episode offers a compassionate exploration of how this tragic loss gives rise to the false self, a defense that becomes both a survival strategy and a prison. Through relatable metaphors and clinical insight, Dr. Ettensohn describes the psychological toll of living behind this mask and the challenges of reconnecting with the buried authentic self. Though the loss cannot be undone, healing is possible. By grieving the past and clearing away the defenses, it is possible to rediscover the vibrant, authentic self that has always been there, waiting to emerge. References: Miller, A. Dr. Reedy reviews Alice Miller's, "The Drama of the Gifted Child." He touts this book as the most important book written on the subject of the parent-child dynamic. Miller explains how a child will give up who they are to meet the parent's needs. The call is to do the deep work necessary to “cut the tragic link between admiration and love.”

Alice Miller's The Drama of the Gifted Child

The lack of Awareness of our feelings and thoughts is the source of misunderstanding, wrong decision, wars and an unhappy life. Without awareness, we can't build up a good attitude because we are not aware what is inside of us. For instance: the great psychologist Alice Miller was together with a mother and her 4-year-old daughter in a kindergarten. The daughter didn't like to play, was depressed…Alice asked, what is going on? The mother said, her father was leaving for work abroad, and she is missing him. The child started to cry; when she finished crying, she could play with the other kids.If even the children are not aware of their feelings what is about us?We are getting many times frustrated, sad, angry; and afterward, we suppress our emotions. After some time we get confronted and release our suppressed feelings on a person who doesn't have anything to do with that… We blemish this person for our negative emotions…We can see that in relationships, the husband is coming home… Loaded with anger and getting fast very angry with his child; or in almost every business meeting, we see the participants are driven by their own personal motives, instead to look for the best outcome for everybody….This means we look honestly as often as possible, how are our feelings now. When we don't be aware of our emotions, we still can watch our thoughts as a witness without manipulating our thoughts…. The feelings creating our thoughts, if we have angry thoughts, we also have anger inside of us, even we are not aware of it. If we are confronted with a new situation and if we are conscious of our feelings what we had before; then this will be the game changer. Because we don't have to project our previous feelings on this new situation/person. For instance, I am aware that I am angry on my chief and didn't have the chance to release my anger. When I get confronted with my chief again, I recognize my anger and can be neutral in this situation. If I would not recognize my anger, maybe I would be impolite, angry and would miss the chance to clarify our misunderstanding….It is science proofed if we watch something; through the watching, we change the situation. This means, if we bring light in the room or in our consciousness, we will improve our attitude. Meditation is: watch and let happen. Through the watching of our feelings and thoughts as a witness, we become better and improve so our attitude. What happens when trust is broken and you're left to pick up the pieces of your life? We explore this compelling theme with Wayne Boatwright, an Ivy League-educated attorney who faced a life-changing tragedy that shattered his world. From his rise to professional success to the fatal accident that led to his downfall, Wayne shares an unflinching account of the arduous journey to regain the trust of his family and rediscover his own sense of self-worth. His story is one of resilience and the incredible personal growth that can emerge from profound adversity. We also turn our focus to the often misunderstood world of addiction and recovery. Drawing from both personal battles and a revealing clip featuring Matthew Perry, we discuss the importance of dismantling triggers rather than simply avoiding them. Through my own experiences in the culinary world and beyond, I share how I managed to navigate environments brimming with potential relapse risks. We delve into the various recovery methods, including AA, and highlight the need to address the root causes of addiction for true healing to begin.Fatherhood and the struggle to rebuild familial bonds after incarceration takes centre stage next. We follow the heartfelt journey of a father fighting to reconnect with his children after years of absence. Through poignant anecdotes and the concept of "enlightened witnessing," we explore the transformative power of authenticity and integrity. The episode closes with a discussion on the influence of technology on trust and decision-making, featuring invaluable insights from thought leaders like Jordan B. Peterson and Alice Miller. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/taosins/message

Chapter 1 What's The Drama of the Gifted Child"The Drama of the Gifted Child" is a book written by Alice Miller, a Swiss psychanalyst and psychotherapist. It was originally published in 1979, and its full title is "The Drama of the Gifted Child: The Search for the True Self." The book focuses on the psychological development and struggles of exceptionally sensitive and highly intelligent individuals, often referred to as "gifted children." Miller explores how childhood experiences, particularly emotional neglect or abuse, can shape the adult lives and personalities of these individuals. She argues that such individuals often face challenges in forming their own identity and authentic self due to the early trauma they encounter. Through the book, Miller offers insights into the healing process and emphasizes the importance of reconnecting with one's true self to attain emotional well-being.Chapter 2 Why is The Drama of the Gifted Child Worth ReadThe Drama of the Gifted Child by Alice Miller is worth reading for several reasons:1. Insight into childhood trauma: The book provides a deep understanding of childhood trauma and its long-lasting effects on individuals. Miller explores how even seemingly ideal childhoods can have hidden damaging elements that impact a person's development and relationships.2. Emphasis on self-healing: The author encourages readers to acknowledge and address the emotional wounds from their childhood. By advocating for self-acceptance and self-compassion, Miller guides individuals towards healing and breaking patterns of dysfunction.3. Clear and accessible writing: Despite addressing complex psychological concepts, Miller's writing is clear and accessible to a wide range of readers. She effectively communicates her ideas and experiences, making it easier for readers to relate to the subjects discussed.4. Relevance for personal growth and self-reflection: The book allows readers to reflect on their own childhood experiences and helps them make connections to their present-day lives. It enables personal growth by providing tools for self-reflection and offering insights into how early experiences shape one's adult life.5. Validation and empowerment: One significant aspect of this book is its validation of individuals' experiences who have undergone childhood trauma. By identifying and describing common patterns and dynamics, Miller empowers readers to understand that they are not alone in their struggles.6. Impact on parenting and fostering healthy relationships: The Drama of the Gifted Child helps readers recognize and break the cycle of dysfunctional parenting by understanding the impact of their own childhood experiences. It offers insights into how to establish healthier relationships, both as parents and as partners.Overall, The Drama of the Gifted Child is worth reading because it offers a compassionate perspective on childhood trauma, encourages personal growth and healing, and provides practical knowledge to foster healthier relationships.Chapter 3 The Drama of the Gifted Child Summary"The Drama of the Gifted Child" by Alice Miller is a book that explores the long-term effects of childhood trauma and the ways in which it can shape an individual's adult life. Miller argues that many adults who were considered "gifted" or high-achieving as children often experienced emotional neglect or abuse in their early years. The book begins by examining the concept of the "gifted child," referring to those who were praised for being talented, intelligent, or exceptionally mature for their age. Miller suggests that this praise often masked the child's true emotional needs and prevented them from developing a healthy sense of self. Instead,...

This week's show is with William Apple. William Apple is a Psychological and Spiritual Mentor, as well as a Psychodynamic Coach. The Foundation of his Work is rooted in Carl Jung's Concept of “Individuation”, and takes a new approach towards fostering a conscious relationship with that Process by quantifying a Depth Psychological and Psychoanalytic approach to the Inner Child as a Precursor to Shadow Work. He is Certified in CBT, DBT, ACT, IFS, and Polyvagal Theory, and his Inner Child Work is strongly influenced by Alice Miller, D.W. Winnicott, Jacque Lacan, Marion Woodman, Magda Gerber, Bell Hooks, and many others. In this conversation, William and I explored the unfolding journey of creating a relationship with the inner child, how confronting it can feel to see how much of our life has been created from the wounding of the child, and how we can be with that in an accepting and accountable way, and lastly and maybe surprisingly, given what a gloomy picture I may have just painted - how it can be a beautiful and playful experience! We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below or share in our fb group. What you'll learn from this episode: The inner child is all the wounded parts of us that have been fractured through conditioning and the parts of us that have been created as coping mechanisms as a result The fish metaphor that arose is one that I think is very helpful in allowing us to see the depths of the conditioning - as William said “We've been led to believe we're fish!” I loved what William said about how those of us who have been in the work for many years, it's not been a waste of time - it's actually a map back to ourselves if we look at the work and our fantasies about it, it can reveal so much about our wounds. We can continue doing that work, with awareness and actually enjoying the play! In this conversation, William and I explored, Phantasy vs Fantasy, what is meant by each, how to know which you're engaging in, and how to work with them consciously. We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below or share in our fb group. What you'll learn from this episode: Phantasy means the spectres of the past are being projected onto the world, whereas Fantasy means what we generally think of the word - conscious engagement of imagining things (and being honest and accountable about that). Once this distinction between the two types is clear, it allows us to see more clearly how we show up in the world, not just to others but to ourselves. We rarely see others for who they are, we see them for who we phantasise them to be. Projections are the non-verbal hopes, dreams and expectations of what we hope that world will be like so we can feel safe. The hopes, dreams and expectations are coming from the spectres of the past - which are unmet needs from childhood which are now being projected out onto others and the world. The work of consciously working with our phantasies means being accountable for them, without shame, blame and guilt. Reclaiming and remembering how to consciously fantasise with our active imagination, particularly with our projections, can be so healing and also fun! Lessons from episode number one of Feds at the Edge can be applied to the ninety-nine that follow At first glance, it is an interview about a tragic fire that befell the world-famous Notre Dame Cathedral in 2019; however, looking deeper you will see that the description risk management can be applied to the life of every federal information professional. The federal government sits on a legacy system that has proven to be successful for decades. The Notre Dame Cathedral was built in 1163. Our federal system is encased in impregnable data centers, much like the limestone of the cathedral. As evidenced by a plethora of Executive Orders, acknowledgment is given to make changes, like Zero Trust, to reduce risk. During the interview, you will find that the cathedral had a fire protection plan put together by experts. Unfortunately, it was not deployed for fear of the transition to a safer environment was too risky in itself. From the perspective of a federal project manager, it is a case study of concepts like risk management, probability, and monitoring. What assumptions are you making about a black swan event and your security system? “During our case study, today, we are going to look at some of the assumptions, factors, and components that shaped the fire protection plan. And that may have ultimately led to its failure.” Dr. Natalie K. Houghtby-Haddon, Associate Director GW CEPL & Assistant Professor, GW College of Professional Studies “That public tweet occurred before the fire department arrived at Notre Dame” Dr. Natalie K. Houghtby-Haddon, Associate Director GW CEPL & Assistant Professor, GW College of Professional Studies Petabytes of data and forests of trees: “And it was called that because the wooden beams that made up that attic dated back to the 12th and 13th century, and wood for more than 1300 trees were cut down and used in building that attic.” Dr. Natalie K. Houghtby-Haddon, Associate Director GW CEPL & Assistant Professor, GW College of Professional Studies Firewalls are standard practice for all computer systems today. “Officials chose not to alter the attic with any modern fire safety measures measures such as sprinklers, or firewalls” Tom Brandt, Chief Risk Officer, U.S. Internal Revenue Service “What is risk appetite, it's the type and amount of risk that an organization is willing to accept in pursuit of values.” Tom Brandt, Chief Risk Officer, U.S. Internal Revenue Service Risk Management does not just apply to moving to the hybrid cloud. “So, as you're accepting risk, are you accepting something that's high likelihood? And if it were to occur? Are you accepting something that's high impact?” Alice Miller, Chief Risk Officer, Millennium Challenge Corporation Twitter: @FedInsider LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/fedinsider/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FedInsiderNews

It's one thing to feel good about what we do, and another to feel truly worthy from the inside out. When we increase our self-worth it allows us to take our needs more seriously, get on our own side, and change our lives for the better. On this episode of Being Well, Rick and Forrest explore how we can develop a more durable sense of self-worth. They talk about self-worth vs. self-esteem, what causes people to lack self-worth, Rick's personal story of developing a true sense of worthiness, and why more self-worth probably won't turn you into a narcissistic a**hole.Watch the Episode: Prefer watching video? Mark speaks with Jennifer Fraser, best-selling author, award-winning educator with a PhD in Comparative Literature. Through personal experience and extensive research, Jennifer uncovered how bullying affects the brain and how the brain can heal, which she details in her new book, The Bullied Brain: Heal Your Scars and Restore Your Health. Today, Commander Divine speaks with Jennifer Fraser, best-selling author, award-winning educator with a PhD in Comparative Literature. In the episode, Jennifer shares how bullying affects the brain and how the brain can heal—detailed in her newest book, The Bullied Brain: Heal Your Scars and Restore Your Health. Key Takeaways: The brain science of abuse. A bullied brain is an unhealthy brain, displaying neurological changes whether the bullying is physical or emotional. We can analyze this on brain scans, brain mapping technology, and correlate it to psychological manifestations in the brain. The psychology of bullying: the Victim and the Favored. Jennifer shares the psychology of the bully stories such as Larry Nassar, which feature bully normalization, co-opting parents into being complicit, and the extensive damage caused in athlete victims AND those witnessing the abuse. Child abuse is indicative of later chronic illness. Child abuse comes in many forms (emotional, physical abuse and sexual, emotional, and physical neglect). Jennifer shares insights from Rolland Summit and Alice Miller’s work that discovered child abuse of all forms accounts for half of the main indicators of later midlife chronic illness. Astounding! You can train your brain out of abuse, like Tom Brady. He’s one of the first premier athletes to publicly share that he trains his brain as much as he trains his body, leveraging a platform called Brain HQ. As one of the best quarterbacks in history, it’s fair to say Tom knows a thing or two about being elite, with compassion and courage. There are solutions, and Brain HQ is one of many.
When a child is particularly emotionally intelligent, and a parent is particularly emotionally vulnerable, an inversion of the typical relationship can occur where the child devotes themselves to meeting the parent's needs rather than the other way around. This can lead the child to lose touch with their own wants and needs – with their authentic self – which then leads to underlying feelings of worthlessness, uncertainty, and self-alienation in adulthood.Extreme versions of this pattern are known as parentification, but mild to moderate versions are surprisingly common. On today's episode of Being Well, Dr. Rick and Forrest Hanson explore how we can heal from the effects of these difficult early experiences and rediscover who we truly are. This material was completely eye-opening for me, and it's one of my favorite episodes we've ever produced.Want to learn more?
