In this week's episode, Nole is joined by Josh Smith. Josh is a friend from Hume Lake and this episode focuses in on Josh's journey of faith and the lessons learned through it. The primary focus is on trusting God, and taking "leaps of faith" as He calls us into things that don't make sense to us, and resisting the temptation to rely on our own strengths or experience. This one hits me right where I'm at in life right now and I personally got a lot out of the conversation. I know that you will too. I first heard about Megan Fate Marshman when our girls came home from Hume Lake Christian Camp and said, "We loved Spirit Girl!" (And Bethany wanted to BE the Spirit Girl--the one who led all the games and was so funny and fun!) Megan still works for Hume Lake as Director of Women's Ministries and is still funny and so fun, but also a great speaker and author. She pastors at Willow Creek Church and ministers at her home church, Arbor Road in S. California. At the time of this recording, Megan had been married 10 years but her dear husband passed away suddenly a few mid 2021 and we pray for her heart to heal and her life to continue to bless hundreds and thousands of her listeners. Please join me in praying for Meg as she mothers her two darling boys. Today's episode is about her latest book, Meant For GoodāThe Adventure of Trusting God and His Plans for You. A must-read. Put it in your own stocking! Some of the many great quotes from Meant for Good:Ā We want answers, God wants trust. God knows His plans for our lives; it doesn't say He will tell us those plans. We must prioritize time for intimacy with God; no one will do that for us. The purpose of prayer is not to share our agenda with God. It's to align our lives with His agenda. About Meg: As an international speaker at churches, conferences and university chapels, Megan Fate Marshman is a leading voice to this generation. She has devoted her life to loving God and overflowing His awesome love to others. Megan is currently a teaching pastor at Willow Creek Community Church and the Director of Women's Ministries at Hume Lake Christian Camps. She also shepherds women at her home church, Arbor Road. She also enjoys adventuring all over the globe with her boys speaking and sharing the love of Jesus. She authored the books āMeant for Goodā and "SelfLess," and co-wrote the book, "7 Family Ministry Essentials," with Dr. Michelle Anthony. Megan also served as the Director of Student Resources for David C Cook Publishers, where she led a team in creating TruIdentity, a spiritually forming, Christ centered, and family empowered youth ministry curriculum. Ā Ā In February of 2021, Megan's husband, Randy Marshman, went home to be with Jesus after suffering a heart attack. For Megan, āto live is Christ, to die is gain (Philippians 1:21).ā She grieves with hope and lives to become more like Christ so others may know Him more through her. Megan lives in Lakewood, California with her two boys, Foster and Jedidiah. Ā

We are continuing our summer series looking at unheralded heroes of our faith. Unique men and women who show us what it looks like to follow God in their lives, and what we can imitate in ours. This week we will examine the conversion of Lydia. A woman who clearly had God work in her life as she heard the Word of God from Paul. God works in opening hearts and minds to receive his message. He did it with Lydia, and he still does it today! We will also make time to hear from our Hume Lake campers. They too have had God open their hearts to receiving the message of God, and can show us more real life examples, just like Lydia.

Today as we look at Paul's own personal "Hume Lake" experience, we discover a few principles. The secret to the abundant spiritual life is to G.I.V.E. This means to Give yourself, have an Indomitable Spirit, to be a Victor, and to Evangelize. Often times we are threatened by comfort, complacency, compromise, culture, and connections, but Paul in Acts 20:24 declares that "none of these things move me..." When we lose our lives, we will actually find it. We won't lose the "Mountain-Top experience" when we choose to live and G.I.V.E.
In this episode Costi Hinn interviews Jonny Ardavanis about how to deal with fear, anxiety, and depression. He ministers to thousands of teens, college students, and young adults every year and regularly points them to the gospel and the character of God on this issue.Ā

What happens when we believe that we can transform lives, renew cities, preach the gospel, bring forth the kingdom, reign in heaven on earth on our own? Disaster. When left to our own devices humanity can and will run itself into the ground. It is because on our own we aren't enough. You are not enough, but Jesus is. How can we learn to root our identities in Christ, so that we may bring life? Listen as our friend, Megan Fate Marshman, walks us through the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand and how Jesus teaches us to lean into him when we don't have enough.

Assistant Pastor Luke Barnes brings us the message this week. Pastor Luke and our Minister to Students, Amanda De La Vega Tovar, will be doing a two week mini-series called "Lessons from the Lake". Recently our middle school and high school youth programs traveled to Hume Lake and Lake Shasta for their annual summer camps. God worked so powerfully in each trip and provided so many amazing stories for the students and leaders. This Sunday, Pastor Luke will tell of the lessons he learned during the annual high school Houseboats trip.

It is one thing to stand on the shore at Torrance Beach and dream of surfing big waves, or stand up paddling, or sailing off to Catalina and beyond. It is a very different experience to actually move out into deeper water where we are confronted with bigger surf, bigger wind, and bigger fish. This is the call of Jesus to Simon Peter in Luke 5. The invitation of Jesus consistently prompts us to move from shallow into deeper water as we follow him as a disciple. It will be scary, but the thrill is worth it. Our all beach service will include what Peter did, welcoming home our Hume Lake students and staff, their testimonies, and baptisms. Bill
VOX Questions - Scripture, Sinners, Women in Leadership, and is the Bible just an epic tale? 1. Thank you so much for recording this! I am understanding the importance of reading Scripture "in context" at a deeper level--with less of the blinders from my church experience. For example, this morning I read Matt 18:15-17 and realized we cannot take this as a step by step process for how to deal with sin in the church/excommunicate someone (as the church often does in my experience) without understanding the social context in which the passage was written--e.g., what were the standards for such issues at the time, and how did Jesus' instructions differ? My point in saying all that is this: What do I listen to/read along with my Bible to get that kind of crucial info? 2. Recently I saw a video clip of a well known pastor talk about the two lies that scare him the most. He says the first lie is that, "You are a good person." He references Romans 3:9-12 (which I believe comes from Ps. 14:3)as well as Ro. 3:23. Essentially he points out that the Bible teaches that no human is good, our hearts are evil. He even goes as far to say that when we speak of someone as "good" at a funeral, we're lying, because the Bible teaches that no one is good. He also used the flood as an example of God's wrath towards his creation that had turned evil. Most of my life, even after becoming a Christian I have struggled with depression and guilt. I guess my question is, even after Jesus, am I still a bad person? Didn't God call his creation good? While these verses that this pastor pointed out are clearly in the Bible, what about other verses that speak of God's great love for us? Is it a matter of seeing God's love for us despite our sin? Do we have an "old sin nature" that stays win us even after giving our lives to Jesus? I'm finding it burdensome to give myself over to Jesus and still be considered "bad" or even that when I sin, I'm constantly disappointing him. Maybe I watched the video with too much of my own insecurities in mind. Anyway, I hope this makes sense. Thanks for reading! 3. My background - As a believer for most of my life- I have grown up in churches, Hume Lake, Biola, and other great spots where the traditional role of women is to submit, not be pastors or teachers (except to children) and not be on elder boards. I have been relatively ok with this (it's tradition) but have really had my eyes opened with your teachings. The biggest issue I now see is that the gospel is becoming ugly to those on the "outside" of church and I know of friends who would never darken the door of my church simply because of how women are viewed. It now only seems to me to be discrimination. I can see that Jesus took a very different role with women- one for which has made me feel loved and respected, and I am so thankful - My question - what do I do in my current church to encourage any kind of light to be shed on this topic in a respectful way- when in essence I'm not even sure my concerns and perspective will be valued simply because I'm a woman? Any advice? I want to lovingly share my concerns- but honestly my foot is out the door of this church (for many reasons- women in leadership being only one.) 4. Love the podcast keep up the good work! Wondering if you have ever responded to the argument that goes: "since the Bible reads like an epic story, than that's all it is - an epic, fictional story." The example I've heard given to explain this is: "why would Emperor Augustus call for a census, especially one where you had go back to your ancestral home? It only makes sense because, like all good fiction, it makes Jesus' birth more dramatic." This feels very Jesus Seminar-ish to me, but it also works to turn the normal genre-based understanding of the books of the Bible against us. Thoughts on this? After a wonderful week ministering at Hume Lake, itās so good to be home. And so glorious to be back in the amazing book of Acts. As you are about to hear in this PODCAST, the elegant simplicity of what God intended His local churches to look like and how He intended for them to function, coupled with unencumbered sincerity of His biblical blueprint for every local church ministry, is breathtaking to behold. Please remember that depending upon your web browser and connection speed, it may take up to 60 seconds for this podcast to begin to play. God bless you richly as you listen.
While I am away speaking at Hume Lake, please enjoy this encore PODCAST. You are about to hear an amazing story about a remarkable man, AND an encounter with Jesus that includes one of the most important and practical biblical principles that you will find anywhere in the pages of the Bible. Quite a claim, I know. One that I will absolutely prove in this PODCAST. A principle that I will be presumptuous enough to suggest that you and I need to hear, and of which we need to be reminded, perhaps often. This is on the surface a story about a man born blind (which would be remarkable enough). But it is also a story about sheep, about a sheepfold, about the door of the sheepfold, about Jesus who identified Himself as the ādoor of the sheep,ā and about life in the desert in which the sheep and shepherds in Israel lived and continue to live. Before we get to the story itself, I need very briefly to remind you of something we talked about way back on February 2, 2013, nearly 3 years ago. When God appeared to Moses in the Burning Bush, He made a most remarkable statement: āI have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey.ā Interesting phrase, āmilk and honey.ā Honey (a jam made of figs and dates) refers to the land of the farmer, and the bounty of the fruit of the land that is grown by the farmers. Milk refers to the land of the shepherd, and that which is produced by the flocks that are raised and cared for by the shepherds. In Israel, both lands -- milk and honey -- come together in a breathtaking variety of geography and climate that (NOW GET THIS) puts into its proper perspective EXACTLY the kind of lives that we are living today. More specifically, HOW and WHY we think the way we do today. We have SO MUCH to learn from this story. Please remember that depending upon your web browser and connection speed, it may take up to 60 seconds for this podcast to begin to play. Words worth waiting for, I assure you. God bless you as you listen.
Jessie Minassian just made a big move and finds herself nestled in the middle of a national forest, hours from anything more than a country store. Her relocation to Hume Lake with her family was a big transition, but an answer to her prayer of "Lord send me". A woman willing to join God in what he is already doing, this is just one ways that Jessie has said "yes" in recent years to the open door in front of her. Jessie's warmth shines through our conversation as she talks through parenting teenagers, writing Bible studies, and transitioning her own girls out of homeschooling. Her desire to walk through the doors God opens, whatever they might be, is evident in every aspect of her life. She is a woman who loves a good pen and Amazon Prime, and maybe, just maybe, sunbathes on her dining room table (you'll need to listen to the end to hear about that). You won't want to miss this delight of a mom, friend and sister that joins us for this round of The Open Door Sisterhood Podcast.
