Slovakia Today, English Language Current Affairs Programme from Slovak Radio
In this episode of Slovakia Today, we take you to the heart of Trenčín—a city with a mighty hockey legacy and a school that's been nurturing future stars for generations. As Slovakia marks 60 years of student and sports education at one of its most storied institutions, we explore how this small city has produced some of the country's biggest hockey names. But with Slovakia finishing 12th at the 2025 IIHF World Championship and fewer players reaching the NHL, the question arises: what's changed, and where is Slovak hockey headed? We speak with local legends like Stanley Cup champion Marián Gáborík, a headmaster who believes in the power of sports-integrated education, and a veteran coach guiding today's youth through new challenges. Along the way, we hear from young players navigating the demands of school, training, and rising costs. This report digs into what it takes to build elite talent in modern Slovakia—and whether the next generation has what it takes to bring the country back to the top of the hockey world.

Thanks for listening Washington Capitals fans! The Official Caps Chirp Podcast on The Hockey Podcast Network is back with another incredible episode. The NHL Conference finals are in full swing and we're going to talk all about it. In the West the Edmonton Oilers lead the series 2-1. After dropping a multi goal lead to the Dallas Stars in game 1, the Oilers have charged back and won the last 2 games in convincing fashion. Dallas isn't out of it yet, but they definitely need some of that magic Rantanen power to get them back on track. In the East, the Carolina Hurricanes have turned a hump into Mount Everest as they can seemingly not figure the ECF's out. They are down 3-0 in their series against Florida and haven't won an ECF in 15 straight games. That's insane. If they get swept I'd look for some big changes to the team in the off season. Beyond the NHL, in IIHF World Championship news: the USA has snapped a 92 year drought and brought home gold in the tournament. Canada didn't even medal so we'll be gloating all about that too. Don't miss it! Draft Kings: https://tinyurl.com/DKTHPNPROMO Use code THPN
Playing in front of a home crowd for the first time in 13 days, the Edmonton Oilers reminded their fans that they are serious in returning to the Final in routing the Dallas starts en route to a 2-1 West Final lead. For the Carolina Hurricanes, once chance remains to save their season, lest be the victims of a fourth consecutive conference final sweep.Elsewhere, the United States wins the IIHF World Championship for the first time since Herbert Hoover was president and This Day in Stanley Cup History looks back 33 years ago to a goal from a rookie..who has yet to officially retire! So thrilled to have Toronto Maple Leafs legend Mats Sundin join us this week. Mats is an 18 year National Hockey League Veteran and in 1989, was the first European to be selected first overall in the NHL Entry Draft. Sundin is best known as a Toronto Maple Leaf where he was Team Captain for 11 years and is the current Leaf's franchise record holder for most goals and most points. He finished his career with a “point-per-game” pace scoring 1,349 points in 1,346 games and is the only Swedish-born player to score 500 goals in the National Hockey League. He won three gold medals at the IIHF World Championship and was the Captain of Team Sweden when they captured the 2006 Olympic Gold Medal in 2012 he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, becoming only the second Swede behind the legendary Börje Salming to be indicted at that time, and in 2017 was named one of the “top 100 players in NHL history” Sundin's his latest accomplishment ??? He has just become a best-selling Author with his book “Home and Away” published by Simon and Schuster!! Enjoy the interview! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We are very excited to be joined this week by Håkan Loob, a rare member of Hockey's “Triple Gold Club” which, to be a member, means you must win a Gold Medal at the Olympic Games, a gold medal at the IIHF World Championships and also win the Stanley Cup – all three! Only 30 players in the history of the sport of hockey have managed to accomplish this. Loob only played 6 years in the National Hockey League – all with the Calgary Flames, but in a very short time he had a very big impact becoming the first Swedish player to score 50 goals in the NHL and played in 2 Stanley Cup finals, including being part of Calgary's only Stanley Cup Championship Team in 1989. Please welcome the man Calgary Flame's General Manager, Cliff Fletcher called “the Wayne Gretzky of Sweden” - our friend – Håkan Loob !!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
