The rocket built by the University of Waikato Astronautics Club will go up against other creations in the outback of New South Wales in August as part of the Aussie Universities Rocketary Competition. They've also got their hopes cast further afield, aiming for bigger competitions in the US. University of Waikato Astronautics Club president Reuben Buckley spoke to Lisa Owen.

Why is “debt-trap diplomacy” nothing more than an anti-China meme? Why is the geopolitical interpretation of Chinese overseas lending wrong, and what does that suggest about US/Western estimates of China's intentions? Why do Chinese firms hate writing down unpayable debts? And why do smaller developing nations rarely benefit from international financial competition? I sat down with the great Shahar Hameiri to discuss all that and more in the latest episode of the pod.Subscribe to the Un-Diplomatic NewsletterShahar and Lee's piece, “China, International Competition, and the Stalemate in Sovereign Debt Restructuring: Beyond Geopolitics.” Shahar Hameiri and Lee Jones, Fractured China: How State Transformation is Shaping China's Rise.Deborah Brautigaum, “A critical look at Chinese ‘debt-trap diplomacy': the rise of a meme.”Shahar Hameiri and Lee Jones, “Debunking the Myth of Debt-Trap Diplomacy.”
The award winning documentary Much Ado About Dying has its US theatrical premiere March 15! Today we talk to filmmaker Simon Chambers. When Simon Chambers received an email from his elderly gay uncle — “I think I may be dying” — he took it as a summons. His Uncle David, a retired actor living alone in a cluttered, mouse-infested London house, was being dramatic. But a documentary film was born. For the next five years, Simon both cared for and documented Uncle David, through all his performative exuberance (acting out passages of Shakespeare), swings from boisterous humor to short temper, and physical/mental challenges. Simon is present for it all and the film captures the impact on him as the gay nephew potentially witnessing his own future. Best Directing, International Competition at the 2022 International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam Award winner, Simon taught disadvantaged teenagers in London for 14 years before turning his hand to films. In 2006, with his first feature ‘Every Good Marriage Begins With Tears', he realized that he had a knack for making the kind of documentaries that people want to watch. With co-host Brody Levesque

Dan, Greg and Shari. Greg La Follette is back on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. He is now the winemaker at Marchelle Wines. Greg has been on CWC several times before, the most recent is this episode from May 25, 2022 when he came in with his label at the time, GLF Wines. Greg's special guest is Shari Gherman, co-founder & President of the American Fine Wine Competition. Participation in their competition is by invitation, and they invited several of Greg's wines. They have a vetting committee that only admits the best wines. His wines were “off the charts” and won lots of gold medals, scored over 90 points and collected some best of class awards. This particular Chard is a 2021 and won a double gold and 95 points. Tritone means it comes from three counties (not the musical term) including Santa Barbara, Mendocino and Sonoma counties. Dan likes it because it has great flavor and also great acidity, to accompany food. That's different than the Colmbard, which is more for drinking. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. The Vine Whisperer Greg La Follette is the “vine whisperer” and the “cellar magician” as Steve says. He has worked 68 vintages on 5 continents, is a former seminarian and biochemist. Because of the research technique called HPLC that he was trained in, he found a job looking at antibiotics but when the Aids effort began his skills were needed there, for the next four years. He also worked with André Tchelistcheff, who resurrected California wine after Prohibition. Georges de la Tour had started Beaulieu and went to the Pasteur Institute in Paris and asked the director who the best student was. It was André so Georges hired André to come to California where he trained decades of winemakers like Greg. This next wine is a Pinot Noir called Fourth Act. Greg's winemaker Evan named is for Greg, as this is the fourth winery that he has owned. This is their blend wine. Dan says it smells exactly like a great Pinot Noir, lots of fruit flavors. Shari points out that it also got a double gold and 95 points at her competition. It also got one at Dan Berger's International Competition last month, it got best of class and best of show.

Are there any thoughts going on in the background as you count? See video here - https://youtu.be/4sPaPYmSW1w WHO IS CHRIS? My name is Chris, and I am the author and content creator for Chatty Geek, Hidden Dragon. I have been practicing a Korean Traditional Martial Art called Tang Soo Do since 1998. Currently, I hold a 4th Dan, and have represented Great Britain on two occasions in International Competition. I follow a Buddhist belief system and have been practicing Chan Buddhist Meditation since 2004. I have taken refuge with the Western Chan Fellowship. My Dharma Name is “Always Fulfilling” Mental and social health is a subject that has always been with be. As many of us probably have, I've often found that I haven't quite gelled properly with groups and have often had passions and interests that to some seem strange, and therefore were difficult to talk about. Ever tried talking about Buddhism and meditation in a construction office?! I've always wanted to do something about this and provide people with the opportunity to have an audience eager to listen to whatever people wanted to share. I've always wanted to entertain and have the freedom to express myself and my creativity in whatever way I wanted. And so, Chatty Geek Hidden Dragon was born! Pine-Richland High School won a 120+ team international competition debating whether the dollar's hegemony is detrimental. Pine-Richland won due to their preparation, perspiration, inspiration... and because they ambushed the competition with something called "the eurodollar". Sponsored by the Brewer Foundation, each year the International Public Policy Forum hosts a new debate. Teams from across the globe submit responses with the top 64 submissions taking part in a back and forth written debate. The final 8 teams are invited to New York city for the final rounds of oral argument. ----EP. 245 REFERENCES----IPPF 2022 Debate Summary: https://bit.ly/3NFTYBlVideo of the Semi-Final: https://youtu.be/wO8SqkhKGDs IPPF 2022 Details: https://www.ippfdebate.com/ippffinalsIPPF Debate Site: https://www.ippfdebate.com/IPPF Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/IPPFdebate/Pine-Richland High School: https://www.pinerichland.org/prhs-------THE EPISODES-------YouTube: https://bit.ly/310yisLVurbl: https://bit.ly/3rq4dPnApple: https://apple.co/3czMcWNDeezer: https://bit.ly/3ndoVPEiHeart: https://ihr.fm/31jq7cITuneIn: http://tun.in/pjT2ZCastro: https://bit.ly/30DMYzaGoogle: https://bit.ly/3e2Z48MReason: https://bit.ly/3lt5NiHSpotify: https://spoti.fi/3arP8mYPandora: https://pdora.co/2GQL3QgCastbox: https://bit.ly/3fJR5xQPodbean: https://bit.ly/2QpaDghStitcher: https://bit.ly/2C1M1GBPlayerFM: https://bit.ly/3piLtjVPodchaser: https://bit.ly/3oFCrwNPocketCast: https://pca.st/encarkdtSoundCloud: https://bit.ly/3l0yFfKListenNotes: https://bit.ly/38xY7pbAmazonMusic: https://amzn.to/2UpEk2PPodcastAddict: https://bit.ly/2V39XjrPodcastRepublic:https://bit.ly/3LH8JlV---------THE TEAM---------Jeff Snider, Head of Global Investment Research for Alhambra Investments.
