These two Palestinian Solidarity Activists have been at the front lines for a ceasefire for 15 months, a Free Palestine even longer. Monday, October 7, 2024 marked the one year anniversary of the deadly Hamas-led attacks in Israel-Palestine, which was followed by Israel's ongoing genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza.  Over the past year, activist organizations, groups and citizens worldwide have done their part to call for an end to this genocide. One such organization is Independent Jewish Voices (IJV).   Today, Louise Smith from IJV sits down with rabble editor Nick Seebruch to talk about the work IJV does to promote peace in the Middle East, how solidarity with Palestine does not equal  antisemitism, and how all forms of oppression are connected.  “There are a lot of really strong voices in the Jewish community that are invested in confusing people about anti-semitism and anti-zionism. And the Israel Lobby and funders of the Israeli state, they really want people to be so afraid of being accused of anti-semitism that they stop protesting any of the humanitarian violations committed by the state of Israel.  And we really need to make a distinction between people who are critical of Jews for being Jewish or Jewish conspiracy theories that are focused on Jewish people or perceived Jewish traits and separate that from legitimate criticism of state decisions. It is very normal for people to criticize state actions, state policies; and that shouldn't be any different for the state of Israel.”   – Louise Smith About our guest and Independent Jewish Voices  Independent Jewish Voices Canada (IJV) is a grassroots organization grounded in Jewish tradition that opposes all forms of racism and advocates for justice and peace for all in Israel-Palestine. IJV has active chapters in cities and on university campuses across Canada. Learn more about IJV here.  Louise Smith grew up in and lives in Toronto, on Dish with One Spoon territory. She is proudly Jewish and organizes in solidarity with Palestinians as part of Independent Jewish Voices and the Jews Say No to Genocide coalition.  If you like the show please consider subscribing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube or wherever you find your podcasts. JNF Canada ‘blindsided' after Ottawa fully revokes charity status. What's next?

The CJN Daily

The official revocation notice of the Jewish National Fund of Canada's charity status, published in the Canada Gazette on Aug. 10, caught many by surprise—especially JNF officials themselves. Lance Davis, CEO of JNF Canada, says the venerable Jewish charity was “blindsided” by the Canada Revenue Agency's move because it came so quickly, despite efforts to negotiate a solution. It also came only two weeks after JNF Canada said that, if no deal was reached, it would appeal the government's “biased” findings to the Federal Court of Appeal. Experts say losing the charitable status means JNF Canada can no longer issue tax receipts for donations; it has one year to wind down business, dispose of all its financial assets or pay 100 percent tax on the millions in its accounts, and go out of business. JNF Canada says it is now going to apply for an immediate judicial review to stop the clock on what its spokespeople call Ottawa's “draconian” approach. Meanwhile opponents of the six-decade-old pro-Israel charity—including the NDP, the Green Party, Independent Jewish Voices and Just Peace Advocates—have been loudly proclaiming victory after years of complaints that the charity's Canadian donors have been funding projects in the West Bank and directly helping the IDF. (JNF Canada says they stopped doing this in 2016.) On today's episode of The CJN Daily, we ask if JNF Canada was a victim of politics—or the author of its own misfortune. Our guest is charity law expert Mark Blumberg. What we talked about Read why the CRA revoked the charitable status of the Jewish National Fund of Canada on Aug. 10, 2024. Who kicked this ‘devastated' Jewish volunteer out of London's JCC?

On July 25, the London Police Service picked up a very upset Darlene Zaifman-Guslits by her arms and legs, and carried her away from the front door of the Jewish Community Centre. The London resident had just been issued a trespass notice for refusing to leave the building where her community was hosting a speech by Conservative party leader Pierre Poilievre, about antisemitism. Whether she was booted out because some of her family members took part in a peaceful protest outside the venue that evening, together with members of Independent Jewish Voices, unions, and pro-Palestinian activists, or whether it was because of what she was wearing, it isn't clear. And no one–not the police, not the JCC, and not Poilevre's people–is taking responsibility for making the call to kick her out. Zaifman-Guslits comes from a prominent Jewish family with deep roots in the city: she has run meal programs for the needy, she's taught Hebrew lessons, and her Holocaust survivor parents helped found the Jewish day school inside the very building she was turfed from. She's now consulted a lawyer. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, Darlene Zaifman-Guslits joins to share why she feels so betrayed and whether mainstream Jewish communities are marginalizing people with progressive views. We often have conversations with folks who have written books. In this episode of Reframeables, Nat has a thoughtful conversation with child therapist Niomi Cherney, who's in the midst of drafting her very own book on how to talk to loved ones with opposing viewpoints — think Trump supporter at one end of the table, and leftist liberal at the other. Essentially, this episode is their attempt to reframe mental health in times of crisis — or what it means to survive and thrive in difficult times. I actually know Niomi from my early mom days, walking to and from school with Niomi, who was at that time a childcare provider for a child who was the same age as Violet. I knew even then how special she was, so caring and creative with her kids. When she reached out to join us on Reframeables, I was excited to pick up where we left off.Nat and Niomi talk about socially conscious self-care, how Niomi finds the strength to show up for her young clients who have lived through traumas at very young ages, and what we can all learn from her self-care strategies as a therapist. They go on to talk about conflicts with loved ones whose values bump with our own, how the term ‘crisis' has been flattened, and what it might mean to reclaim it. Finally, Niomi shares about her activist work with Independent Jewish Voices to support the ongoing crisis in Palestine. This is a smart and honest reflective conversation that you won't want to miss — whether you are a parent of a young one navigating their own challenges, or simply someone working to balance their own mental health in these challenging times.Link:Follow Niomi on InstagramWe love hearing from our listeners! The government of Newfoundland and Labrador will hold a news conference today, May 9, to officially announce its adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of antisemitism. The move will be done by proclamation and unveiled at the Confederation Building in St. John's. “We remain unwavering in our commitment to always challenge antisemitism, wherever and whenever it occurs,” said Gerry Byrne, the cabinet minister in charge of immigration, population growth and skills, in a media release. Officials say the adoption came after a request from local Jewish communities, and is being done as part of the province's efforts to tackle racism in all its forms. With this, Canada now has seven provinces—plus the federal government—who have incorporated the IHRA definition of antisemitism as official policy. So why are reports of Jew-hatred incidents in Canada still in the thousands last year, according to a recent B'nai Brith report? Does this latest adoption mean a setback to those groups who oppose the IHRA definition, such as academics, unions, the NDP, some First Nations groups, and particularly the Independent Jewish Voices group? Last month, a report from the pro-Palestinian group Independent Jewish Voices came out, titled "Unveiling the Chilly Climate – The Suppression of Speech on Palestine in Canada." Those cited in the report claim that the institutional adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism, otherwise known as the IHRA definition, has had a chilling effect on any open discussion of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. At the same time, there is a mirrored feeling among some Jewish students that if they talk about ties to Israel, or refuse to condemn—let alone support—Israel's actions, they'll be labelled racist and colonialist. On today's episode of Bonjour Chai, The CJN's weekly current affairs podcast, we're asking: How can these two dynamics exist at once? What evidence or data do we have that might shed light on how well founded both those fears are? And does evidence really matter to the emotional reality of the students involved? To help us unpack all this is Kenneth S. Stern, a lawyer, writer and current director of the Bard Center for the Study of Hate—who was also the lead drafter of the IHRA definition. After that, David and Ilana talk to Michele Freed of Resetting the Table about how to have less toxic conversations about Israel. A new report by Independent Jewish Voices documents in detail the reprisals, harassment and intimidation faced by Canadians who engage in scholarship and activism in the area of Palestinian human rights. The report discusses how this chilling effect blunts and shapes the discourse around Palestinian rights and criticism of Israeli policy. We speak with report co-author, Sheryl Nestel.

On this episode, Michael and Tom are joined by Sheryl Nestel and Rowan Gaudet of Independent Jewish Voices Canada to talk about their new report on the suppression of speech on Palestine on Canadian campuses. We look at how pro-Israel groups have used harassment and intimidation against pro-Palestine academics to create a “chilly” atmosphere for debate. We talk about how students have been affected by these attacks and discuss the role of the controversial IHRA definition of antisemitism in suppressing speech.Links from this podcast:IJV's report: Unveiling the Chilly Climate: The Suppression of Speech on Palestine in Canada Subscribe to this podcast, and donate to CJPME to support the work that we do.

Our fall fundraising campaign is underway and generous supporters have agreed to match your donations. Mondoweiss is a reader and listener-funded non-profit news publication. This gives us the independence to report on events in Palestine accurately and comprehensively because we answer to you, our readers and listeners. In the past 3 years we've invested pretty heavily to grow our team of reporters and contributors. We now have 4 full-time staff in Palestine, 5 full-time staff in the U.S., and many regular contributors all over the world. And I'll be honest, growing a non-profit news organization in today's media landscape is a pretty risky move. But we believe the movement for Palestinian liberation is in a transformative moment. And we believe that Mondoweiss plays a critical role in centering Palestinian and anti-Zionist voices. That's why we've taken this risk to grow our staff in these uncertain times, and it's why we need your support. Please visit our website at mondoweiss.net to learn more about our fundraising campaign and chip in. Your contribution will be matched, doubling your impact. Thanks so much! The Canadian group Independent Jewish Voices today is releasing a report titled “Unveiling the Chilly Climate - The Suppression of Speech on Palestine In Canada.” Researchers Sheryl Nestel and Rowan Gaudet spent the last year gathering information and testimonials about the repression faced by academics, students and Palestine solidarity activists across Canada. This is the first study to use ethnographic methodology and qualitative analysis to describe both the overarching effects of this repression as well as the deeply personal impact it has on activists, artists, students and professors. While many people active in the Palestine solidarity movement are familiar with the tactics described in the report, it is shocking to read the dozens of testimonials collected and understand the extent and scope of the suppression efforts. I spoke to Sheryl and Rowan last week about the report and what can be done to counter these attacks. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. Fan of the show? https://www.patreon.com/newleftradio (Support us on Patreon)! With the longest continuous occupation in the world, the movement for justice in Israel/Palestine and Palestinian liberation has been a strong voice for decades. The events of the early summer - the evictions in Sheikh Jarrah and the brutal violence inflicted on the people of Gaza seems to have changed the paradigm in North America, with millions pouring into the streets in solidarity with Palestinians and demanding a change to the brutal and dehumanizing occupation. We're joined by Aaron Lakoff of Independent Jewish Voices, and Dalia Al-Masri of the Palestinian Youth Movement to discuss the shifting landscape, the Canadian response, and what we can do to support a just resolution in the region. Links http://www.ijvcanada.org/ (Independent Jewish Voices) https://palestinianyouthmovement.com/ (Palestinian Youth Movement) https://bdsmovement.net/ (Boycott, Divestment, & Sanctions Movement) http://bdsguide.com/bds-list/ (BDS List) About Independent Jewish Voices We are a group of Jews in Canada from diverse backgrounds, occupations and affiliations who share a strong commitment to social justice and universal human rights. We come together in the belief that the broad spectrum of opinion among the Jewish population of this country is not reflected by those institutions that claim to represent Jewish communities as a whole. We further believe that individuals and groups within all communities should feel free to express their views on any issue of public concern without incurring accusations of disloyalty. We have therefore resolved to promote the expression of alternative Jewish voices, particularly in respect of the grave situation in the Middle East, which threatens the future of Palestinians and Israelis as well as the stability of the whole region. About Palestinian Youth Movement The Palestinian Youth Movement (“PYM”) is a transnational, independent, grassroots movement of young Palestinians in Palestine and in exile worldwide as a result of the ongoing Zionist colonization and occupation of our homeland. Our belonging to Palestine and our aspirations for justice and liberation motivate us to assume an active role as a young generation in our national struggle for the liberation of our homeland and people. Irrespective of our different political, cultural and social backgrounds, we strive to revive a tradition of pluralistic commitment toward our cause to ensure a better future, characterized by freedom and justice on a social and political level, for ourselves and subsequent generations. Brendan interviews Rabbi David Mivasair about recent developments in the campaign by Independent Jewish Voices and other concerned parties to end the tax exempt status for the "Jewish National Fund." The JNF is an Israeli tool for the dispossession of Palestinians. It has been used to erase Palestinian settlements, in one case replacing villages with "Canada Park." Use of occupied land for one ethnicity only contravenes international law, and Canadian domestic law. The JNF has also been implicated in funding Israeli armed forces projects, something which a Canadian charity cannot do.
