I'm not the sharpest knife in the musician drawer. Disheartening. I wish I were better. If wishes made me play better… All I can do? Keep at it. In the last two years. I've gone from “I can't do this, I'm quitting” to “I need to be better.” One foot in front of the other. If this were health, I'd advise that you never get better in a straight line- always many dips and rises. No dip, no rise. I do like the rise. Gotta live with the dips. The Show After last week's arcane episode (Arcane means understood only by a few) about Cost in Healthcare, here's something lighter and more familiar – plying a craft as a dedicated amateur, in my case, as a musician. I'm as good as I am I left for the gig determined and fearful. I've spent six to ten hours a week playing my horn since I got the new baritone sax stand. I hadn't played for eight weeks with my back pain and inability to carry the weight of the fifteen-pound horn on my shoulders and neck. The new stand holds the sax independently so I can play sitting or standing. Working with my long-time teacher, Jeff, I've made considerable progress on feeling the form of the tunes, keeping my place with decent phrasing for my solos. I've made it a point to solo on three tunes each session the band plays, a stretch for me. Our alto player couldn't make the gig; I would be one of two horn players. I was determined to solo on six tunes to fill the gap, I felt the fear about my ability or lack thereof. I'd be as good as I am – sweaty hubris, to be sure. Hiding,

When Kayla Harrington, then student now Legal Research Assistant at Thomson Reuters, wrote a blog about inherent gender bias in society, she was clearly hoping to raise the profile of the issue. But she didn’t anticipate that her blog would gain the attention of her father Jeff Harrington, whose eyes were opened to the issues she raised, or that it would eventually lead to a discussion on the ISG Women in Digital podcast. At college, Kayla took a very academic approach to the issue of sexism and developed the belief that the world was changing and gender equality was improving. Upon graduating and entering the world of work, she realized there was still a long way to go to overcome what she terms “ambivalent sexism.” This is the subtle and generally accepted sexism that permeates both the language we use to talk about women and the way we interact with women across all walks of life. Join host Jeanne Cuff as she talks to the father-daughter duo about gender inclusivity and how companies today must go further than just ensuring equal representation of women in the workplace. They discuss how the global pandemic of 2020 has highlighted the struggle for many women managing both family and work. Statistics indicate that one million people have left the workforce this year and that 80 percent of them were women who felt unable to juggle both work and family commitments under the unprecedented circumstances. According to Jeff, this creates a great opportunity for change. Because the pandemic has brought work and family life closer to each other for both men and women, many men can appreciate in a new way the challenges working women have faced for generations. He believes this appreciation will bring understanding, greater inclusivity – and hopefully less inherent gender bias in the workplace. Listen in to hear the discussion.

Many states and cities offer tax breaks and other incentives to lure businesses and jobs—often raising questions about the actual benefit of the expensive measures. California communities have a unique version, one that Bloomberg Tax’s Laura Mahoney shed light on this year. In extensive data research and reporting, Mahoney uncovered Cupertino’s payment of nearly $70 million to Apple through the years. It started when the company was in trouble in 1997, and it continues with monthly payments to the now-giant global enterprise. Defenders say agreements like this help the economy of job-hungry cities; critics call them an unwarranted tax giveaways. Other companies have similar arrangements—Best Buy, for example, has one with the city of Dinuba. The money comes from a special California mechanism that shares sales tax revenue with communities where companies are located or that are designated as points of sale. Bloomberg Tax team leader Jeff Harrington spoke with Mahoney about the issue and her reporting. When Congress put a $10,000 cap on the amount of state and local taxes individuals can deduct from their federal income taxes, high-tax states tried to fight for their residents in a couple of different ways. One way—charitable funds that earned people state tax credits for donations—got shot down by the IRS. But states have tried another kind of workaround. Because the deduction cap applies only to individuals, not to businesses, some states have instituted new taxes on pass-through businesses, like LLCs and partnerships. These entities normally don’t pay taxes. Instead, their individual owners pay tax on the business income. Bloomberg Tax team lead Jeff Harrington explored the state workarounds with Cannon-Marie Green, the managing editor overseeing Bloomberg Tax’s editorial coverage of state corporate income tax and pass-throughs. Martin Voigt, the only beer blogger in Austria, is our first guest today, and Dr. Hoby Wedler is also here, together with Bob Sonnenberg and Jeff Harrington from the Earle Baum Center in Santa Rosa. Martin will talk about his trip to California to get better acquainted with the craft beer industry here. Then Dr. Hoby Wedler, an organic chemist who has been blind since birth and who is a flavor expert, will lead a blind taste test. Martin Voigt greets Steve Jaxon with “Servus!” which is a typical Austrian and central European greeting. Martin says that Marzen beer is the most popular style in Austria. It’s a lager beer. They have some Pilsners too, but mostly those are made in Germany. In the last decades, major companies have bought all the small breweries in Germany, but not in Austria, where they still have small or mid-size breweries that have existed for many years. Austrians like having beer that comes from a local brewery. So this makes it easier for Austrians to get into craft brewing. Herlinda has noticed that they like American beer there. Martin Voigt mentions that Lagunitas just got a distributor in Europe and they were at the craft beer festival in Vienna. US beer is known now as some of the best in the world. Many American breweries don’t ship to Europe so Martin had to come to California to meet the brewers and taste the beers. Martin Voigt's trip has included visits to Sierra Nevada in Chico and Moonlight Brewing (recent Brew Ha Ha guests). He will visit breweries for the next two weeks. Next they taste a cider flavored with hops called Black Stock. Martin says that cider has become popular in Austria too. Herlinda introduces some guests from the Earle Baum Center, a nonprofit regional community center in Santa Rosa California, serving people with sight loss in Napa, Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino Counties. Bob Sonnenberg is Director of Development and Jeff Harrington is a Director and Assistive Technology Specialist. Dr. Hoby Wedler is also in today, he is a PhD organic chemist and a sensory scientist. As they taste the hop flavored cider, they notice the hop called Lemondrop among the other flavors. Everyone agrees it has a unique flavor. Herlinda tells about another cider called OMG Ugly cider. They brought some spice aroma ciders, one that tastes of cedar chips and star anise pods. Steve introduces Dr. Hoby Wedler and asks him to tell about his activity. He has a PhD in computational organic chemistry and is a sensory science specialist. He and his business partner have founded Senspoint Design. Steve then asks Bob and Jeff to talk about the musical event that usually happens at this time of year, but this year the Earle Fest wasn’t on target for what the organization does. So they are having another event, a community open house, where they can show what they do. Earle Baum was a blind farmer born in 1896 who lived to the age of 90. He wanted to be a journalist, but they did not have the technology he needed to do that as a blind person. So he stayed on his farm and designed a lot of assistive tools to help him do the job. “Your Vision Our Focus” is the name of the event. Bob and Jeff describe what the Earle Baum center does, including core services to help persons with visual impairment, to help people learn to live with significant vision loss. One of the services they have is some simulators to help family members understand the effects of different types of visual impairment. Herlinda mentions that pharmacies in Europe provide Braille information with prescriptions. Next, Hoby has brought some blindfolds for everyone to wear, in order to conduct a blind taste test. Steve puts on the blindfold and his first taste is Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA and they discuss its flavor profile. Next they taste some anise mixed with cedar chips. Every item has a particular scent which they describe carefully. There is a blend of cacao and coconut too.
