In this week's episode we talk to runner and Naval Office, Paul Johnson about:The logistics of running across the United StatesRaising money for Team Red, White and BlueFueling for 3,000 miles in 52 days (and change)In 2018 Naval Officer Paul Johnson went on his first deployment overseas to Spain. While it led to amazing opportunities, it was a difficult tour that weighed heavily on him and his fellow Sailors. His next duty station took him to San Diego in 2021, and once removed from the constant stressful environment of his first deployment, he began noticing the issues he had been dealing with, like persistent sleep issues, anxiety, and depression. He had been using alcohol as a coping mechanism, but his narrative began shifting in 2022, when a Marine friend asked Paul to train and run the Marine Corps Marathon. He trained for months, and they both ended up finishing the marathon in under 3 hours, and receiving their Boston Qualifier. During this time, he realized how much running helped him cope with the anxiety/depression symptoms he was experiencing. In January 2023, with a move to the East Coast, he started a run streak. This quickly evolved into entering the ultra scene, running 100 mile races by April 2023. Running was his therapy, and he found release and escape in a positive way. This year (2024), he tackled the TransCon, running 3,000 miles from California to New York to raise awareness & funds for mental health issues facing veterans through Team Red White and Blue, which exists to enrich the lives of veterans by providing opportunities to build a healthier lifestyle. Please note that this podcast is created strictly for educational purposes and should never be used for medical diagnosis and treatment.***Keep up with Paul Johnson:IG: @pauijohnsonYT: @pauijohnsonWebsite/Donate to Team RWB: www.pauljohnson.run Mentioned:Sports Nutrition Education ProgramBoston Athletic Assn. As you hear in the news every day, we're having a mental health pandemic. It's affecting people from all walks of life. Our veterans, our nation's heroes are especially hard hit. To talk about that today, Andy Riise, he's one of the leaders with Team Red, White and Blue.
Andy Riise, Speaker, Author, Mental Toughness Coach, and now Associate Director of Veteran Engagement for Team Red and White and Blue, a veteran service organization, returns to give us an inside look at mental sensitivity. He explains how we can use this hidden superpower for our greater good. By combining this with regulating ourselves our internal environment, we can build mental toughness and use it to thrive through adversity. Okay, that's a bunch of psycho-babble. So let's get a practical street definition. Mental toughness is getting the most out of what you have to be at your best when it matters the most.” 01:16 “The four Cs of mental toughness are confidence, control, commitment, and challenge. And there's two-step factors for each of those. There's actually a valid and reliable psychometric tool that I use in my athletes, business leaders, and people in healthcare. So those four Cs are really the four elements that make up your mental toughness profile. 03:46 “Mental toughness is a combination of playing psychological defense, which is resilience and mental performance with psychological offense. You bring those together, you get a really good championship combination.” 5:36 “The first step of being a better thermostat is the thermometer, which is self-awareness and you also have to be aware of outside of myself, which is my environment and other people and how they affect me. So it's inside out and outside in terms of my ability to be able to read myself. My internal temperature and the temperature outside of myself.” 7:22 “We haven't developed the coping skills over and allowed our kids to then be able to make mistakes and learn and experiment and fail. We protect them. We wanna make things easier for the next generation. And in some ways, we do them a disservice.” ABOUT THE BLUEPRINT PODCAST: The BluePrint Podcast is for busy professionals and Household CEOs who care deeply about their families, career, and health. John was inspired to apply to West Point from rural Michigan due to the examples of his father and uncle and the guidance of his mother. John was prepared for the physical and military rigors of West Point, but needed to lean upon the academic skills and expertise of those around him. John had success and enjoyed his time at West Point because of the individuals he surrounded himself with. John joined the Field Artillery branch and posted to Fort Hood with his peers. John had success and fulfillment within that community, but didn't see a future in military service beyond his initial service obligation. John transitioned from active duty to the Texas National Guard and Caterpillar. Those groups were critical to his transition; allowing structure, purpose, and community. John left the Texas National Guard and Caterpillar to get get closer to family and to build roots in a community. John found his roots in Team Red White and Blue. Where they help veterans build community through physical fitness, camaraderie, and community. This is his story. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/joe-harrison0/support

While much of our community-building efforts began before the shutdown in 2020, I feel, as a community, we were our best during the pandemic and this has motivated me to cultivate the same sense of community in every lived-in space I have going forward. As I get older, I find that community where one LIVES is so important. We don't always have to go out to find a sense of belonging and although it may seem hard at first, it is possible to cultivate a sense of belonging and togetherness in heterogeneous communities. Listen as she and I share our community stories and provide advice from our lived experiences on how to create a community where it is needed most, in our neighborhoods. About this week's guest: I'm kicking myself for this because during the episode I fail to really capture what a badass Meg is. Please forgive me! Meg flew helicopters, planes and deployed to Afghanistan. Now she uses her Army leadership experience to coach others through her company "Riveting Mission LLC" while being an Army Wife and mother to 4 young children. She grew up in an Army family with both her mother and father being West Point graduates. She joined the family business and graduated from the United States Military Academy in 2006. After graduating from flight school in 2008, qualified in both the Blackhawk helicopter and RC-12 Guardrail airplane, she was stationed at Hunter Army Airfield. She then deployed to Afghanistan and flew over 200 combat hours. After additional schooling, she went on to the 82nd Airborne Division and 1st Corps before leaving the Army to focus on her family and pursue coaching and mentoring. She has done work with Team Red White and Blue, Wear Blue: Run to Remember, and led groups in her local church. She and her husband, Mike, have four children, McKinley (9), Madison (8), “Mac” Arthur (5), and Moriah (2). Find her at riveting.mission@gmail.com and on Facebook @RivetingMissionLLC and Instagram @riveting.mission.llc She runs a Monday morning virtual group that shares a short Bible-based message and then does a workout together called "Fit To Serve." You can find details on Facebook or email her for more info. During the show, we mention some resources that are great for women and people in general. Find links to them all below. Breathe By Priscilla Shirer (here's an intro video too) The Turquoise Table by Kristin Schell - We didn't talk about this during the recording but she shared it with me after. In this episode, we are visiting with two men who have dedicated their lives to service. They both started out serving via the military. One was a leatherneck a Hollywood Marine who saw combat in Iraq, wound up being medically retired in 2010 from the Corps. He then on a request from his oldest son became a football coach for his team. A year later he was coaching in High School. Then life happened and he had to take that resilient mindset to a new level. He continued to serve with Team Rubicon, Team Red White, and Blue became a Fellow with the Mission Continues and a Shepherd with the Save a Warrior foundation. All of this led him back to coaching, the true life of service. Our second guest was the son of a Navy family, He grew up in Virginia, had some speedbumps while in school, and wound up not graduating with his class. He joined the Army as an Engineer. Here he found his path with true mentors all around him, great leaders, and advice. He earned the coveted Sapper tab as a young Sergeant (not many achieve this). He left service and started a path he never thought possible, he is becoming a teacher. He is also a coach of all sports. He loves to coach, teach and mentor and he is a student of each game he is involved in. As an 8-year helicopter pilot for the US Army and now wife to a man in active duty, toting two darling kids all over the United States and sharing her journey every step of the way, Amy Lou Hawthorne is an American sweetheart who has stolen the hearts of many of my current listeners and followers. I recently asked on my instagram stories for suggestions of people to interview for Veteran's Day who either were in the armed forces themselves or married to someone in active duty, and Amy Lou Hawthorne was the overwhelming favorite and most suggested out of anyone. I was delighted to find out that not only is she an army wife who understands the struggle of having a spouse away on active duty, but she herself also served in the military for 8 years as a helicopter pilot. Amy shares candidly her ups and downs of being in the military, the leadership lessons she learned, how its affected her marriage and her children as she's raised them through several deployments and most importantly, she educates me on how to better serve and understand and appreciate those who sacrifice so much to make our country safe. I'm so thankful so many of you pointed me to her and I really think you're going to love this interview. Amy Lou Hawthorne Instagram The Ever Co. In this episode Rajashree opens up and reveals the origins of her yoga practice as a child in India - and how it guides her as she teaches yoga today. Rajashree's bio from her website... At the urging of her parents, Rajashree began her yoga practice when she was four years-old. She is a five-time winner of the National Indian Yoga Championship from 1979 to 1983. By age 11, Rajashree won several titles. This experience shaped her life dream of encouraging youth to practice yoga. Born in Kolkata, living in Los Angeles since age 19, Rajashree Choudhury's background is a true blend of the East and West. To promote yoga-asana as a sport, Rajashree founded the http://www.usayoga.org/ (United States Yoga Federation) and the http://i.yogasportsfederation.org/ (International Yoga Sports Federation). "Much of the work I have done promoting yoga as a sport has been fired by my desire to inspire youth to practice yoga."Rajashree believes that introducing yoga at an early age helps ameliorate and avoid problems that arise as one journeys through life. With a special focus on the emotional side of yoga, Rajashree advocates yoga's impact on not only physical health, but also the mind, body and soul. An unprecedented passion for public service, Rajashree has a degree in yoga therpay and is certified with the International Association of Yoga Therapists. In 1994, Rajashree co-founded Bikram Yoga's Teacher Training program, and continues teaching heated hatha yoga.. To supplement her ambitions, Rajashree began her jewelry line in 2005 to create unique accessories that would remind people to embrace, embody and empower their true self. Each stone having it's own therapeutic healing properties, gemology is something that reconnects Rajashree to her childhood Vedic traditions, while also aiding her mission to help others. Rajashree supports many causes locally, nationally and internationally. Eva shares what runners can expect at this year's Ann Arbor Marathon, which is set for Sunday, March 24. Midway through the show, Eva and Heather are joined by two runners and veterans who are part of Team Red White and Blue (Team RWB), an organization that Epic Races partners with for many of their racing events. Ryan Taylor, a U.S. Marine Corp veteran, is a cyclist and marathoner. This week’s episode is a special one for me, because I get to talk about an issue that is deeply personal. It’s easy to become jaded by statistics, but the 22 veterans a day who take their own life is one number that has touched me personally. When there’s a name and a face that you once knew behind a number, it takes on a deeper significance; all the more when it’s a former brother in arms. It’s not good enough for us to shove our hands in our pockets and sadly shake our heads. This is not a problem that will be solved by throwing more money at it. There needs to be concrete, immediate, and personal action. Team Red White and Blue has stepped into that gap. Their mission is “to enrich the lives of America’s veterans by connecting them to their community through physical and social activity.” If you’ve seen a bunch of eagle-emblazoned, flag waving crazies at your local 5k, that’s Team RWB. But behind their unabashed patriotism and almost impossible friendliness is a group with a very serious purpose. They’re using the best tools available to fight back against the tidal wave of veteran disengagement, depression, and suicide, by fostering camaraderie, purpose, and mental and physical health. Zack Armstrong is the Director of Programs for Team RWB, and he sat down with me to dig into how they take action every day, all around the world, to create authentic, positive connections between veterans and civilians alike. He details the philosophy and core values that they deploy through their cadre of Eagle Leaders, who then become engines of positive change in their local communities. We discuss how they’ve managed their exponential growth while preserving their culture, and how their leadership development programs focus on providing the skills and practice needed to engage veterans in empathetic, authentic relationships.
Michael Cook is the Director of Indianapolis' Team Red, White, Blue Chapter. Team RWB’s mission is to enrich the lives of America’s veterans by connecting them to their community through physical and social activity. Enrichment is defined as creating quality relationships and experiences that contribute to life satisfaction and overall wellbeing. The concept of enrichment consists of three core components—health, people, and purpose—that define a rich life. Enrichment Equation: Enrichment = Health + People + Purpose - People: Creating authentic connections (defined as genuine, quality, supportive relationships that generate mutual trust and accountability), reflected in an increased number of close relationships and improvements in teammates’ sense of belonging, purpose, and community engagement. - Health: Creating frequent opportunities for team members to connect through fitness, sports, and recreation to improve physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. - Purpose: Engaging members in meaningful team and community-based experiences such as leadership and service that, beyond physical and social activities, renew self-identity and purpose in life. Special Guest: Michael Cook.
On this Veterans Day-themed episode of the Runified Podcast, we talk with two runners associated with Team Red, White & Blue (Team RWB), an organization with the mission of enriching the lives of America’s veterans by connecting them to their community through physical and social activity. We first talk with Mike Erwin, the founder of Team RWB, who graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, served as an intelligence officer in Iraq and Afghanistan, and taught cadets at West Point. Mike has completed dozens of marathons and ultramarathons and shares helpful training advice and encouragement. We also learn about Mike’s recent book, Lead Yourself First: Inspiring Leadership Through Solitude, and how Jim Collins wrote the foreword for the book. Host Matt Sorenson then speaks with Philip Swift, an Army veteran living in Houston Texas, about how he discovered Team RWB and serving our country in Iraq. Philip shares about how he got lazy after getting out of the army, and how Team RWB has not only helped him physically but how it has also helped him re-engage with people, becoming more social and making quality friends he can count on. We also talk about how Philip’s running community helped his family recover from Hurricane Harvey. Philip tells us why he loves trail running and how it’s helped his mental health, enabling him to become a better husband and father. My interview this week is with Army Veteran Doug McCormick. I've been very fortunate in the past couple months and have received a lot of opportunities for interviews. My cup has run over, and finally, after sitting on it for six to eight weeks, I finally have opportunity to release my interview with Doug. We talk about a few important topics, to include Veteran community, entrepreneurship and money. Note: We are not providing any financial advice and VA does not official endorse Doug’s guidance on money, but we did invite him onto the podcast because it is an important topic and respect him as a subject matter expert. Episode #89: Team Red, White & Blue: Helping veterans through running Integrating back into civilian life is incredibly challenging for many veterans, and one national organization with a significant presence here in Michigan is helping ease that transition—and life beyond—thanks in part to running. On this week's show, Heather talks with two west Michigan runners and U.S. Army veterans—Eddie Kline and Ben Foreman—about their involvement with Team RWB Grand Rapids. Team RWB has chapters across the country, as well as internationally; there are 8 regions, 115,000 members, 209 locations and 1,999 volunteer leaders. Michigan has the most Team RWB chapters of any state and the midwest region is the most populated, too. "I really like being part of Team RWB because it aligns with what I do for my everyday life," says Eddie Kline, who is athletic director for the Holland Field Team, a sub-chapter of the Grand Rapids chapter. "Building a strong social community through positive relationships is prevalent in both RWB and my CrossFit gym. We use physical activities as our vehicle to bring people together and create bonds on top of that. It doesn't feel like a job because I love doing it—being part of the Team RWB leadership team has let me expand my reach, help my fellow veterans and give back to my community." Eddie and Ben share the different ways Team RWB is connecting veterans, civilians and communities. They also talk about upcoming races they're looking forward to, and how Team RWB will play a part in these events. The Adaptive Athlete with Theresa Larson This week we sit down with Movement RX physical therapist, Mobility Wod instructor, and soon to be mommy Theresa Larson to discuss the challenges associated with being an Adaptive Athlete. This is a small but growing population in the training community and you may be surprised at just how many may be training in your facility without you even knowing it. The key to recognizing them is simply knowing who your training partners and athlete our. Asking simple questions and getting to know the folks you are training with is the key. To help coaches acclimate Adaptive Athletes to the training environment Theresa has developed, and will be launching the CrossFit Adaptive Athlete Course. Theresa’s Bio Dr. Theresa Larson (aka “Dr. T”) has become one of the fitness world’s most sought after experts on movement health. Dr. Larson earned her doctorate in physical therapy from the University of Saint Augustine in San Diego, CA. A former Marine Corps Engineer Officer and Combat Veteran, Theresa also played professional softball in Italy as well as semi-professional softball in the United States, was an All- American Division I softball player at Villanova University, as well as a former Body-for-Life Champion. Theresa founded Movement Rx with her husband in 2013 in order to break free from the limitations that traditional physical therapy puts on practitioners and patients. The result was a company where skilled practitioners can authentically treat patients with the time, care, and movement education they deserve. Dr. Larson is determined to teach movement health to as many people as possible with her team. She is an international speaker on movement & mobility for MobilityWOD, and is the creator and lead instructor of the injured and adaptive athlete course for CrossFit, Inc. She recently authored a memoir (WARRIOR) that was published in April of 2016 through Harper One, an imprint of Harper Collins, and is a co-founder of one of the most complete virtual rehabilitation programs available – The Low Back Fix. In addition to her practice and speaking efforts, Dr. Larson is a huge advocate for Team Red White and Blue, a veteran non-profit, National Eating Disorder Association, CrossRoads Adaptive Athlete Alliance, Resiliency Project, and Challenged Athletes Foundation. Theresa and her team’s mission is to help you help you heal fully and give you the tools to take care of yourself for life. Team Red, White, and Blue or Team RWB, for short, is a non-profit organization on a mission to enrich the lives of America’s veterans by connecting them to their communities through physical and social activity. Blayne Smith is the Executive Director of Team RWB and is a West Point graduate and former Special Forces officer with combat tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan. As the Executive Director for the non-profit startup, Team Red, White and Blue (RWB), Blayne Smith feels a deep sense of purpose and believes he is making the world a better place. His goal is to bring veterans out of their houses and into communities where their skills and talents can be recognized and utilized. Veterans are uniquely gifted with the extensive experience of being part of a team, working through abstract situations and solving problems through creativity to enhance the lives of people within their communities. Free workouts and Leadership Athletic Camps are essential parts of the initiative, which brings people together through physical activity. Key Takeaways: [2:18] Team Red, White and Blue was founded as a way for veterans to connect with people in their local communities. [15:29] What are the most underutilized characteristics veterans possess? [19:01] High-performers want to be led and to have their efforts reinforced by positive feedback. [26:02] Team RWB encourages people to get out of their house and connect with their communities, but veterans are responsible for sharing what they have to offer. [29:18] Many companies haven’t fully embraced the power of building strong teams who trust each other. [31:53] How to get involved in Team Red, White and Blue. In episode 66 Doc Danny & Coach Joe sit down with Dr. Theresa Larson to discuss her new book Warrior. She fills us in on how being a Marine Lieutenant struggling with an eating disorder helped her turn into one of the world’s most badass physical therapist. Theresa Larson was born and raised in a log cabin on the outskirts of Seattle, fostering a love of the outdoors and an active lifestyle. After losing her mother to cancer at the age of 10, Theresa developed a resilient perseverance and determination that led to a collegiate scholarship and semi-professional softball career, top awards as a fitness competition contestant, and an appointment to Lieutenant in the Marines, where she led an entire platoon while deployed in Iraq. Her service was cut short when she was voluntarily evacuated due to an ongoing struggle with bulimia nervosa. Theresa’s journey to wellness required the bravery to ask for help, to take care of herself first, and abandon the idea of “perfect”. She is now a Doctor of Physical Therapy and the founder of Movement Rx, a physical therapy and wellness company that offers support to wounded warriors and individuals with health and movement issues. She travels all over the world as a speaker for MobilityWOD and the CrossFit Movement & Mobility Trainer Course. She is a lululemon ambassador, and works with nonprofits including Team Red White & Blue, LinderKids.org, Resiliency Project, CrossRoads Adaptive Athlete Alliance, and the National Eating Disorder Association. Theresa hopes that through sharing her story, she will help inspire others to empower themselves, embrace their inner warrior and re-define and acknowledge their strength.
