On the latest episode of the Coffee Sprudgecast, Zachary Carlsen brews BlendIn Coffee Club's Colombia Los Nogales, the winning 2024 US Brewers Cup Championship coffee (which also happens to be their house decaf coffee!) Weihong Zhang of BlendIn Coffee Club in Houston, Texas, your 2024 United States Brewers Cup champion, took top honors in Rancho Cucamonga using a decaf Typica variety from Colombia, with a coffee he serves on bar every day. Pick up a bag of it online or in their cafe year-round. This is exactly what host Jordan Michelman did the evening Zhang was announced the 2024 champion! The decaf underwent a decaffeination process developed by Oscar Hernandez of Finca Los Nogales in Huila, Colombia. After de-pulping, the green coffee is then decaffeinated using, in part, its mucilage, which helps “[avoid] off flavors and [enhance] complexity with floral and fruity notes,” Zhang told Sprudge in an interview with Zac Cadwalader. Sprudge's coverage of the 2024 US Barista Championship in Rancho Cucamonga is presented in partnership with Third Wave Water. Zachary Carlsen replicates the brew process deployed on the Brewers Cup stage as accurately as possible (with a slightly different hand grinder and variety of Hario V60—listen in to find out more). The process is especially interesting due to its use of two water temperatures and a touch of water bypass at the end.

I must confess I broke a cardinal Faturday rule on our prior Corner Kitchen episode as I usually wait to review a place until after they have been open for about a month…but I couldn't help myself as the food looked too fun. Well, on this episode we have the creators of that food Chef Oscar Hernandez and fellow Corner Kitchen owner Maira Hernandez. We of course talk about Corner Kitchen, places Maira and Oscar like to eat and I really dig the part where we get to talk about the cuisine of Mexico specifically the different types of tortas…chiliquiles torta anyone?

I'm not the sharpest knife in the musician drawer. Disheartening. I wish I were better. If wishes made me play better… All I can do? Keep at it. In the last two years. I've gone from “I can't do this, I'm quitting” to “I need to be better.” One foot in front of the other. If this were health, I'd advise that you never get better in a straight line- always many dips and rises. No dip, no rise. I do like the rise. Gotta live with the dips. The Show After last week's arcane episode (Arcane means understood only by a few) about Cost in Healthcare, here's something lighter and more familiar – plying a craft as a dedicated amateur, in my case, as a musician. I'm as good as I am I left for the gig determined and fearful. I've spent six to ten hours a week playing my horn since I got the new baritone sax stand. I hadn't played for eight weeks with my back pain and inability to carry the weight of the fifteen-pound horn on my shoulders and neck. The new stand holds the sax independently so I can play sitting or standing. Working with my long-time teacher, Jeff, I've made considerable progress on feeling the form of the tunes, keeping my place with decent phrasing for my solos. I've made it a point to solo on three tunes each session the band plays, a stretch for me. Our alto player couldn't make the gig; I would be one of two horn players. I was determined to solo on six tunes to fill the gap, I felt the fear about my ability or lack thereof. I'd be as good as I am – sweaty hubris, to be sure. Hiding,

Whether in a concert hall or at an outdoor jazz festival, there is no easing you in, they come at you full force, from start to finish. Their energy on stage and their rich sound and musical precision leave audiences mesmerized until the last note is played. With an unwavering respect for the music’s storied history, the ensemble’s thirteen world-class musicians and vocalists come together to create an unparalleled musical experience. This week, I got to have a roundtable discussion with several of my colleagues about a Strategic Research Plan released by the EPA earlier this summer, outlining their approach to reduce and replace “vertebrate” testing. What we’re really talking about, of course, is animal testing. In keeping with the commitment outlined in 2016’s Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), the EPA proposes several so-called New Approach Methodologies, or NAMs, which they hope will be able to replace and reduce animal testing. Weighing in on this hot topic are several of my colleagues: Dr. Rich Engler, our director of Chemistry, Dr. Jane Vergnes, our senior Toxicologist, and Dr. Oscar Hernandez, our senior regulator chemist. If you want to learn more, check out our regulatory blog on www.lawbc.com where we have an entire section devoted to keeping up with TSCA. All Things Chemical is produced by Bergeson & Campbell and Jackson Bierfeldt with Bierfeldt Audio. ALL MATERIALS IN THIS PODCAST ARE PROVIDED SOLELY FOR INFORMATIONAL AND ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES. “Hello, it is I, the Nigerian Prince.” Sound familiar? In this special bonus episode, Sara interviews Faraday Okoro and Oscar Hernandez, the director and producer (respectively) of the film Nigerian Prince, out now. Sara, Faraday, and Oscar discuss the film and what it’s like to get sent to live in Nigeria against your will. (Yes, that really happened.) They also talk about why emails from Nigerian Princes always have so many typos. Finally, they discuss some signs you’re getting conned, and the scams they themselves have fallen for.
Wellspring therapist, Lindsey, joins Dr. Oscar Hernandez on a segment of Health Talks to discuss insomnia.
Host Deardra Shuler talks with Oscar Hernandez, pianist and bandleader of the Spanish Harlem Orchestra. The two-time Grammy Award-winning salsa band, sets the standard for authentic New York style salsa dura. Live or recorded, it doesn’t get any better, and whether at a concert hall or outdoor jazz festival, there is no easing the audience in as the Spanish Harlem Orchestra performs at full force from start to finish. Although the Bronx native was once best known as Rubén Blades’ pianist and musical director, Hernández has also worked with such seminal artists as Ismael Miranda, Ray Barreto, Celia Cruz, and Paul Simon. Spanish Harlem Orchestra’s blend of classic salsa tunes with new material debuted with 2002’s Un Gran Dia En Barrio, which earned the 2003 Latin Billboard Award for Salsa Album of the Year-Best New Group and a Grammy nominee for Best Salsa Album. Their second release, Across 110th Street won the 2005 Grammy Award for Best Salsa/Merengue Album. Next came the Grammy nominated album United We Swing (2007) that featured Paul Simon, and Viva La Tradición with guest artist Issac Delgado that was honored with the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Album. Their latest release is the self-titled album Spanish Harlem Orchestra with special guests Chick Corea and Joe Lovano. The Spanish Harlem Orchestra will be appearing at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts, located at 250 Bedford Park Blvd West, Bronx, NY on Saturday, October 28th, 2017 at 8pm.
