This week Jeff Parsons of DPR Construction joins the 17Twenty team in studio, despite a local ice storm in the D/FW area. It was a great joy to chat with Jeff as we walked through his story, learned lessons from his life, talked through building the future workforce, studied the origin stories of DPR and its deep integration with Jim Collins (Built to Last, Good to Great, etc.), and revisited the must-attend AEC event, DPR's Hoot and Hollar. There are two fistfuls of wisdom nuggets from this weeks episode; however, one of our favorite things about this week's episode is that we continue to pull forward some of the same things from leaders across different ages, times, industries, backgrounds, etc. People matter. Relationships win. Be kind. Listen first. Embrace curiosity. Practice transparency. Hold the flashlight. We hope you enjoy this week's episode, can grab a little nugget in there, and keep moving mountains!// Connect with Us // Check out all our episodes on all major streaming platforms, and further engagement with the 17Twenty crew on social media at:https://17twenty.buzzsprout.com/https://www.linkedin.com/company/17twentyhttps://www.instagram.com/17twentypodcast

There's just something undeniable about the appeal of a classic pinball machine. The flashing lights, the casino-like sounds, and the tactility of the physics involved all add up to a "Sure, I can spare a couple of quarters" response in almost everyone when we see one in the wild. But — as it is with most things — there exists a hidden shadow realm of die-hard pinball aficionados who are not only walking historians of chrome spheres and flippers, but who have the experience to spank these marvels of entertainment engineering into total high-score submission. Today, Saint and Jim are joined by four of them: Christopher Franchi, Jeff Parsons, and Dr. & Mrs. Pin (of both the Super Awesome Pinball Show, and Mrs. Pin's Pinball Podcast). These folks are an absolute treasure trove of knowledge on pinball's past, present, and future. During this surprisingly wide-ranging conversation, they team up to offer us a glimpse into a world most of us aren't even aware of. So cram this in your earholes, and get ready for a masterclass on all things pinball.
Franchi, Dr. Pin and Jeff Parsons are not only joined by a special guest co-host and special guest Tom Drummond, bassist of the band Better Than Ezra, who has started routing games in pubs in a pinball starved New Orleans. Welcome to Soft Power, a show that discusses Chinese duty, American elections, and democracy, told through Golden Age references and Hillary Clinton. Jeff Parsons (of A Musical Theatre Podcast) joins us again to discuss this new Pulitzer Prize finalist, changes between productions, and how this show is the most exciting new piece of musical theater. “It Just Takes Time”, so join us as we take you through the entire show, beginning to end! (Also check out chapter markers for specific scenes and songs!) -- The conceit of the show is a reversal of The King and I, which is funny since leading man Conrad Ricamora starred in the latest revival, but you can also hear about the process of putting the show together. The show hinges on a real-life event where David Henry Hwang got stabbed in the neck shortly after the 2016 election. As this time-lapse demonstrates, the Shanghai skyline has changed a lot just in the past 40 years. Watch snippets of daily life and activities in the actual Fuxing Park. Listen to director Leigh Silverman talk about the ending scene and how it came about on The Ensemblist. Each song serves a specific purpose, and David Henry Hwang breaks down each track for us. Like the music, the choreography also references a lot of traditional musical theater concepts, and Sam Pinkleton breaks down the movement in different scenes. -- Check out scenes from the musical!
