Anthony and Marlie Love created a Youtube channel called "Traveling While Black in Seattle." In it, they explore the region and detail their experiences. They say they want to let other Black people know where they encountered racism to inform their travel choices. Anthony and Marlie recently visited Portland and covered it on their series. Overall, they say the trip was pretty fun and they felt mostly comfortable. Meanwhile, Nelson Holland is an outdoor influencer based in Colorado. “Fat, Black and Gettin' It” on TikTok and Instagram details Holland's adventures hiking and exploring nature. He recently visited Bend to work with Jenny Bruso, the founder of “Unlikely Hikers,” on a photoshoot with Eddie Bauer. After arriving, he was called a racial slur by people in a moving vehicle. He said the experience changed his plans during the trip and he questions whether or not he'll visit Oregon again. Holland, Anthony and Marlie join us with details of their experiences visiting Oregon.

Last week we celebrated National Take a Hike Day, and today on the show we're continuing our celebrations of the Hike Your Turf campaign in partnership with our friends at Merrell. All month long, we've been discussing the importance of getting outside and the need for equitable access to parks, trails, green spaces and more. On today's episode, I'm so excited to welcome one of Merrell's ambassadors to chat about her journey to becoming an outdoor leader, advocate and community builder. Jenny Bruso is the founder of Unlikely Hikers, which is an incredible community she created when she discovered a connection with nature, but found outdoor culture to be hostile to those who don't fit the white, straight-size, cishet-normative, able-bodied mold. Unlikely Hikers is a diverse, anti-racist, body-liberating outdoor community featuring the underrepresented outdoorsperson. I'm so grateful to Jenny for joining me on the show to discuss how this community is creating a sense of belonging for people who are often underrepresented or made to feel like they don't have a place in outdoor spaces. Tune in to the full episode below to learn more about Jenny and her inspiration behind creating Unlikely Hikers. You'll also learn: How Jenny reframes what it means to be “outdoorsy.” How Unlikely Hikers is showing the diverse ways people are getting outside and creating space for the underrepresented outdoorsperson. How the changing seasons are a great metaphor for the changes we go through in life. The importance of honoring Indigenous communities and acknowledging the stolen lands we are recreating on. How Jenny feels when she hears someone went on their first hike because of something they saw on Unlikely Hikers. Why we should challenge the notion of “being our best selves” all the time and just do the best with what we've got, and a whole lot more good stuff! I want to show people that you can do, be and live however you want AND that you can change your mind about what that means any time you want. Your mind has the power to climb whatever mountains your facing and I'm here to help guide you.   I fell in love with rock and mountain climbing 4 years ago and struggled to find my place at first. Instagram played a huge role in helping me step into my power when I started following other plus size adventurers. I want to increase representation of plus size people in the outdoors, especially in leadership/guide roles. I want to see more people who look like me in marketing from outdoor gear companies. And I REALLY want to get better technical gear for bigger bodies so we can keep doing all the things outside safely (and even fashionably? My body is not a thing that receives action or inaction. It does not exist for your fantasy, ridicule, attitudes, judgements, lust, admiration or hatred. My body is a subject. It is. It does. This episode was originally published in August 2020.  When it comes to getting outdoors, gear can be a major barrier. Whether it's finding gear that comes in your size (let alone actually fits your body), knowing what gear is a must-have and what you can safely skip, or having the funds for what you need, there's a lot more at play than just walking into your local outdoor retailer. This week, we wanted to dig into women's gear—across hiking, climbing, dog mushing, and more—to find out how far we've come in opening up the outdoors to bodies of all shapes and experience levels and how far we have to go. With the most guests we've had on one podcast since we started recording at home, this episode stars Unlikely Hikers founder Jenny Bruso, Flash Foxy founder and climber Shelma Jun, and Iditarod competitor Blair Braverman, who share how they fell in love with the outdoors in the first place, how they overcome gear barriers today, and what they want from the outdoor industry. Her work stands at the intersection of food, social justice, sports and culture. She’s written longform pieces about everything from farming to NASCAR. She is a graduate of Dartmouth College, and later earned her MFA in Creative Nonfiction from The New School in New York City. She is a three-time Best American Sports Writing notable for her stories on athletes in places of tension—primarily Standing Rock, ND and Flint, MI. She received a Bronze level CASE Award for her reporting on immigration policy that stemmed from 2017’s Executive Order 13769, often referred to as the “travel ban.” Her work has been featured in the NYT, LATimes, The Guardian, espnW, Southern Living, and Garden&Gun.Tyler “The Prodigy” Lau (left) hails from the US and Hong Kong. He didn't grow up appreciating the outdoors, but that changed as he got older and started taking jobs doing trail maintenance, rehabilitating fragile habitats and fighting wildfires. At work he found himself experiencing discrimination and sterotyping, which openend his eyes to the diversity problem in the outdoors. He wanted to be a part of making it more accessible to all. In 2018, he became the first Person of Color and first Asian-American to complete a Calendar Year Triple Crown which is the completion of the Pacific Crest Trail, Continental Divide Trail and Appalachian Trail in one calendar year. He used the hike to promote and fundraise for organizations working on diversity efforts in the outdoors.– Find the full show notes for all that we discussed and join our next episode at jennybruso.com/podcast

Jenny Bruso is the founder of Unlikely Hikers. Her work is rooted in her belief that there is room for every body on the trail. Jenny is queer, fat, and femme, and she's passionate about cultivating a safe space in the outdoors for people of all backgrounds and body sizes. Unlikely Hikers is just two years old, but its positive reception proves that the time is right for outdoor media and meetups that include rather than exclude, and encourage people to occupy their bodies rather than critique them. We talk with Jenny about Unlikely Hikers' growth, how straight-sized people can be considerate of others while in the outdoors, where she finds her hiking apparel, and more.
