Victoria Amico would say that hiking 100% ruined her life, but in the best way possible. Seven years ago, she thought she knew what she wanted in her career and devoted her whole self to achieving her goals. But then hiking came along and forced her to examine what she really wanted. In the process, Victoria ended up learning how to choose herself and take up space with her body on the trail.Victoria shares how she got started hiking (and the transformation it inspired), why 100 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail was the right number this year, why she started her social platform Plus Sized Outdoors, and her hopes for everyone out there listening. Overall, they say the trip was pretty fun and they felt mostly comfortable. Meanwhile, Nelson Holland is an outdoor influencer based in Colorado. “Fat, Black and Gettin' It” on TikTok and Instagram details Holland's adventures hiking and exploring nature. He recently visited Bend to work with Jenny Bruso, the founder of “Unlikely Hikers,” on a photoshoot with Eddie Bauer. After arriving, he was called a racial slur by people in a moving vehicle. Holland, Anthony and Marlie join us with details of their experiences visiting Oregon.

Last week we celebrated National Take a Hike Day, and today on the show we're continuing our celebrations of the Hike Your Turf campaign in partnership with our friends at Merrell. All month long, we've been discussing the importance of getting outside and the need for equitable access to parks, trails, green spaces and more. On today's episode, I'm so excited to welcome one of Merrell's ambassadors to chat about her journey to becoming an outdoor leader, advocate and community builder. Jenny Bruso is the founder of Unlikely Hikers, which is an incredible community she created when she discovered a connection with nature, but found outdoor culture to be hostile to those who don't fit the white, straight-size, cishet-normative, able-bodied mold. Unlikely Hikers is a diverse, anti-racist, body-liberating outdoor community featuring the underrepresented outdoorsperson. I'm so grateful to Jenny for joining me on the show to discuss how this community is creating a sense of belonging for people who are often underrepresented or made to feel like they don't have a place in outdoor spaces. Tune in to the full episode below to learn more about Jenny and her inspiration behind creating Unlikely Hikers. You'll also learn: How Jenny reframes what it means to be “outdoorsy.” How Unlikely Hikers is showing the diverse ways people are getting outside and creating space for the underrepresented outdoorsperson. How the changing seasons are a great metaphor for the changes we go through in life. The importance of honoring Indigenous communities and acknowledging the stolen lands we are recreating on. How Jenny feels when she hears someone went on their first hike because of something they saw on Unlikely Hikers. Why we should challenge the notion of “being our best selves” all the time and just do the best with what we've got, and a whole lot more good stuff! This episode was originally published in August 2020. When it comes to getting outdoors, gear can be a major barrier. Whether it's finding gear that comes in your size (let alone actually fits your body), knowing what gear is a must-have and what you can safely skip, or having the funds for what you need, there's a lot more at play than just walking into your local outdoor retailer. This week, we wanted to dig into women's gear—across hiking, climbing, dog mushing, and more—to find out how far we've come in opening up the outdoors to bodies of all shapes and experience levels and how far we have to go. With the most guests we've had on one podcast since we started recording at home, this episode stars Unlikely Hikers founder Jenny Bruso, Flash Foxy founder and climber Shelma Jun, and Iditarod competitor Blair Braverman, who share how they fell in love with the outdoors in the first place, how they overcome gear barriers today, and what they want from the outdoor industry. This week I'm excited to bring you a conversation I had with Plus-size outdoor professional and adventurer Ashley Manning. We have an amazing conversation talking about our experiences as plus-sized outdoors people regarding social media, stigmas, gear, how other hikers like Jenny Bruso of Unlikely Hikers have encouraged us, and how much we appreciate companies like Columbia that make clothes for plus sized adventurers! Thank you so much Ashley for coming on the show and having this conversation with me. This was one of my favorite thus far and I am so excited to share it with you all! Ash Manning is a plus-size hiker and river runner from North Georgia. Her mission is to encourage others to break the stigma around fat bodies and get into the outdoors responsibly and safely. Engearment Podcast - John Sears of Gregory Backpacks - Unlikely Hikers We get to take you, the viewer and listener, to the Gregory Backpack Headquarters for a look at some really great projects they are working on. Vice President John Sears gives us a rundown of their collaboration with Unlikely hikers. A diverse, plus-size, inclusive group that encourages people of all backgrounds and sizes to get outside. Truly, an awesome collaboration. If you know much about my history, all the members of my family were plus-size, and they would have loved to see this. We also get to see some of their new backpacks and a really geat hydration bladder ( I am grabbing one today!) On a serendipitous level, my first backpacking pack was a Gregory Baltoro 65, and the man who helped design it is.... John Sears. Small, awesome world! Ashley is a lover of the outdoors and is passionate about whitewater rafting and hiking. Ashley has been dreaming about hiking the Appalachian Trail ever since she was a little girl when her and her father would pick up thru-hikers and give them lifts into town. After graduating college in 2018, it was the right time to commit to taking on this challenge. Ashley was sponsored by the Thru Hiking Syndicate which is where she got her gear from. After a false start on the AT, and forgetting her pants! Ashley soon got into the rhythm of daily hiking, gaining a trail name and a trail family, she completed just shy of 1,000 miles before having to leave the trail. During this episode Ashley shares more about her dream, the challenges she faced getting to the start line, what it was like being plus size on trail, and providing lots of top tips on how to spend more time in the outdoors. Ashley has made it her mission to help enlighten and encourage folks from every walk of like to enter the world of nature in a safe and fun way. “Do not let anyone’s words stop you from enjoying what you love” - Ashley Manning. Sarah Keller and Taylor Morton join us on Artemis this week to talk about growing a LGBTQ+ community in the hunting and fishing world. Their initiative is called is Queers and Camo. What follows are lessons on preparation, humility, race relations, and nature’s wild unpredictability. Through it all, Derick “Mr. Fabulous” Lugo refuses to let any challenge squash his inner Pollyanna, persevering with humor, tenacity, and an unshakeable commitment to grooming that sees him from Georgia to Maine. She loves creating programs for people who want to improve their strength and confidence with functional and intuitive movement. In 2019, she created BOPOMO, a Body Positive Movement class specifically for plus-size, fat-identified, people of color and queer folks of all abilities to find joy and empowerment through movement. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, she began offering classes online. Tasheon is also a self-described Unlikely Hiker. She didn't really understand why people would climb mountains until 2017 when her brother died and hiking became a way to process her grief. Jenny Bruso is the founder of Unlikely Hikers. Her work is rooted in her belief that there is room for every body on the trail. Jenny is queer, fat, and femme, and she's passionate about cultivating a safe space in the outdoors for people of all backgrounds and body sizes. Unlikely Hikers is just two years old, but its positive reception proves that the time is right for outdoor media and meetups that include rather than exclude, and encourage people to occupy their bodies rather than critique them. We talk with Jenny about Unlikely Hikers' growth, how straight-sized people can be considerate of others while in the outdoors, where she finds her hiking apparel, and more. Women featured in this episode: Jenny Bruso Hosted by Gale Straub Featured in the midroll: Kaily Gashi, hiker and mother of twins Join the She Explores Podcast community on Facebook. In this episode, you'll hear: Why Jenny Bruso started Unlikely Hikers and what it means to be one How her time on the trail equates to self care How Unlikely Hikers group hikes intentionally cultivate a safe space for all people (including queer, trans, people of color, fat, disabled, etc.) Why Jenny's ground rules for hikes include not talking about weight or dieting The assumptions straight-sized people make about fat people on the trail (and how to avoid making them) Why representation of marginalized communities in the outdoor industry won't change unless those communities are included when decisions are being made The lack of options available for plus sized athletic clothing (and who is doing a good job) Enjoy this episode?
