Episode #3.2: The Heart of Law With Attorney Ed Bell Are you ready to uncover the truth behind one of the most significant and complex cases of our time? Join our intrepid host, Mirena Umizaj, in a powerful and poignant episode of The Heart of Law, as she invites Attorney Ed Bell, the founder and senior partner at Bell Legal Group, to explore the unwavering dedication of Attorney Ed Bell and his team to pass the Camp Lejeune Justice Act and provide justice for the hundreds of thousands of victims impacted by the catastrophic contamination that occurred at Camp Lejeune. With a career spanning over 30 years, Attorney Ed Bell is widely regarded as one of the best trial lawyers in the country today. But what sets him apart from the rest? Well, according to Mirena Umizaj, he's a "unicorn" in the legal world! Not only is he a top civil litigator in complex litigation, but he's also a successful business owner, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. And it's not just his impressive credentials that make him stand out. Attorney Ed Bell's unwavering commitment to seeking justice and advocating for his clients is truly remarkable, as evidenced by his tireless efforts in the Camp Lejeune water contamination case spanning over a decade and a half. As Mirena and Attorney Ed Bell delve deeper into the intricate details of the case, their conversation takes on a sense of urgency, punctuated by the gravity of the recent developments and hearing that served as a stark reminder that time is of the essence. Navigating through the complexities of this case is no small feat, as the overwhelming volume of claims creates a formidable challenge for the government to manage effectively. Sensing the court's ardent desire to fast-track the proceedings, Attorney Ed Bell ingeniously proposes the implementation of bellwether trials–an innovative approach that not only expedites the legal process but also provides both sides with a valuable opportunity to test their theories, present their arguments, and ultimately determine the value of the case at hand. As Attorney Ed Bell passionately explains, "I haven't had a client yet ask me what their case is worth; they don't care. That's not their goal. Their goal is to have somebody say, 'Why did you kill my children?'" Thus, the heart-wrenching pursuit for justice and understanding, driven by grief and anguish, takes precedence over monetary value for these clients. This case has left a lasting impression on many, including Mirena, who had her own transformative "Erin Brockovich moment" upon hearing the story. The profound resonance of the case has transcended personal connections, permeating influential circles and capturing the attention of notable figures, including President Joe Biden, Congressman Greg Murphy, and other prominent individuals who have played pivotal roles in advancing the associated bill. With a relentless determination to uncover the truth, Attorney Ed Bell has taken the initiative to create an epidemiological model as a supplement to the ATSDr study, while also spearheading the establishment of a remarkable call center staffed by veterans and their families. Attorney Ed Bell's journey and passion for justice is truly remarkable. From his love for cooking to his discovery of law, his tenacity and dedication to his clients and the legal industry is truly inspiring. With the help of his law school interns and a team of compassionate professionals, Attorney Ed Bell continues to lead the charge for justice in the Camp Lejeune lawsuit. His message to the legal industry is clear - let's prioritize our clients and strive to do what's right. With Attorney Bell leading the way, there's hope for a brighter future where justice prevails. "I hope at the end of this case we won't sit back and talk about the money; we'll talk about the people we helped and maybe give a new direction to how people in America have the right to utilize the justice system. What I hope though is that the community as a whole, our body of politics, our local folks should remember the reason why our founders founded the judicial system is so that citizens could fuss with each other without killing each other." "I think those of us who believe passionately in something, no matter whether it's cooking or law or husbandry or animals, whatever, there are some people that have this driving passion that makes them strive for excellence. I think I try to have some of that. Every now and then, I feel it. Sometimes I don't. I have to go looking for it. But I think it's part of any successful attorney... It's just a different passion for what you're doing." "I haven't had a client yet ask me what their case is worth; they don't care. That's not their goal. Their goal is to have somebody say, 'Why did you kill my children?'" "We have so many families that have lost all of their family members that were at Camp Lagoon, and you can see the pattern: they lived in the worst location. And most of these people have the worst diagnosis. When you multiply that risk of having cancer hundreds of times, then you've created something in these families that is unbearable. They want to know why, why the government did it, and why they're able to get away with it." "We had to figure out a way to get these folks their ability to find justice, and that's what we did. When we got kicked out of court, I had a meeting with a bunch of our clients, and in the middle of the meeting, I said, 'Don't worry, we're going to do something. I'll take care of it.'" "I think those families that I got to know for the 15 years we've been working on this case are the things that inspired me to kind of get us where we are today." "I think the Court's going to be happy with the attorneys that are there. I think the Court's going to see our passion and those folks that are representing these victims and families. If we watch out for them as our clients and keep that as our focus, I think this will be successful." "My job is not necessarily to just protect the easy cases but to protect those people who otherwise wouldn't have a voice." "One of the things we didn't expect was that this was a very satisfying project we had. But not realizing the impact that it would have on us as a law firm, that's when I reached out to your group and said, 'Look, I'm a pretty good lawyer, and I need somebody to give me some help and some advice,' and your group has come in and helped us tremendously in our growth and in our management of certain things." "I have not agreed with every jury verdict in my life, but I've always respected that verdict and kind of understood why sometimes I didn't get the result that I wanted. But having that respect for the system, I hope we can instill that among the people we represent so that they don't feel like the government can just take over their lives and do anything they want to them." "We've just kept our heads down and we just kept plotting away doing what's right, and everybody worries about what the Court's going to do. I'm not worried at all what the Court's going to do, they're going to do it, and we just need to go along with what's getting ready to happen." "Some of these non-lawyer advertising groups have given lawyers a bad name. A lot of them are lies and that hurts all of us. A lot of Marines and Marine families don't trust them and have not wanted to go forward because of this. I would urge them not to throw the baby out with the bathwater. There are a lot of good lawyers that would be willing to take their case and be able to help them" “I believe the proof is in the pudding. We are good litigators, we know how to manage cases, we know how to put them together. All we're doing is doing more of them. It means something to me when some of the top lawyers in the country asked me to help them on these cases." "I'm eternally grateful to my clients for trusting us to do what we're doing… we will not let them down. My message to the legal industry is let's do this right, let's let this be an example to other cases of how to do it. I think we can, I think we can do it right if we keep client focus as our number one goal. Then things will work out." TAYLOR BROWN grew up on the Georgia coast. His work has appeared in a wide range of publications, including The New York Times, The Rumpus, Garden & Gun, Chautauqua, The North Carolina Literary Review, and many others. He is the recipient of a Montana Prize in Fiction, a three-time finalist for the Southern Book Prize, and was named the 2021 Georgia Author of the Year. He's also been a finalist for the Press 53 Open Awards, Machigonne Fiction Contest, Wabash Prize in Fiction, Rick DeMarinis Short Story Contest, Dahany Fiction Prize, and Doris Betts Fiction Prize. He is the author of a short story collection, In the Season of Blood and Gold (Press 53, 2014), as well as five novels: Fallen Land (St. Martin's Press, 2016), The River of Kings (St. Martin's Press, 2017), Gods of Howl Mountain (St. Martin's Press, 2018), Pride of Eden (St. Martin's Press, 2020), and Wingwalkers (St. Martin's Press, 2022). Taylor, an Eagle Scout, graduated from the University of Georgia in 2005. He's settled in Savannah, Georgia, after long stints in Buenos Aires, San Francisco, and the mountains and coasts of North Carolina. He is the editor-in-chief of BikeBound.com, and he likes old motorcycles, thunderstorms, and dogs with beards. A former WWI ace pilot and his wingwalker wife barnstorm across Depression-era America, performing acts of aerial daring. “They were over Georgia somewhere, another nameless hamlet whose dusty streets lay flocked and trembling with the pink handbills they'd rained from the sky that morning, the ones that announced the coming of DELLA THE DARING DEVILETTE, who would DEFY THE HEAVENS, shining like a DAYTIME STAR, a WING-WALKING WONDER borne upon the wings of CAPTAIN ZENO MARIGOLD, a DOUBLE ACE of the GREAT WAR, who had ELEVEN AERIAL VICTORIES over the TRENCHES OF FRANCE.” Wingwalkers is one-part epic adventure, one-part love story, and, as is the signature for critically-acclaimed author Taylor Brown, one large part American history. The novel braids the adventures of Della and Zeno Marigold, a vagabond couple that funds their journey to the west coast in the middle of the Great Depression by performing death-defying aerial stunts from town to town, together with the life of the author (and thwarted fighter pilot) William Faulkner, whom the couple ultimately inspires during a dramatic air show—with unexpected consequences for all. Brown has taken a tantalizing tidbit from Faulkner's real life—an evening's chance encounter with two daredevils in New Orleans—and set it aloft in this fabulous novel. With scintillating prose and an action-packed plot, he has captured the true essence of a bygone era and shed a new light on the heart and motivations of one of America's greatest authors.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Greensky Bluegrass over Zoom video! Greensky Bluegrass are thrilled to announce their return to Colorado for four unforgettable performances. The band will kick things off with An Evening With Greensky Bluegrass Sept 14 and 15 at the Dillon Amphiteater. Then, the band will head down the mountain to Morrison for two more fun-filled evenings at Red Rocks Sepr 16 and 17. Special guests for Red Rocks TBA. For more information and all up to date news and tour info visit greenskybluegrass.com. Earlier this year, the band released their eighth studio album Stress Dreams via Thirty Tigers. Ahead of the release, Stress Dreams received high praise from critics. Garden & Gun calls the album "one of the most complete and engaging of the group's more than twenty-year career" and Glide says “Stress Dreams perfectly exemplifies, once again, why Greensky Bluegrass is heralded as one of the most important & influential bands of the modern progressive-bluegrass era.” About Greensky Bluegrass:Since their 2000 formation in Kalamazoo, MI, the quartet—Anders Beck [dobro], Michael Arlen Bont [banjo], Dave Bruzza [guitar], Mike Devol [upright bass], and Paul Hoffman [mandolin]—have unassumingly progressed into a phenomenon on their own terms with the undying support of a devout audience. Rolling back and forth across North America on successive tours, they've sold out multiple dates at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the Ryman Auditorium, the Fillmore Detroit, Riviera Theater Chicago, and many more. Beyond standout sets at Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, New Orleans Jazz Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and Austin City Limits, they co-own and have headlined 4848 Festival and Strings & Sol. In 2019, "All For Money" marked their second #1 debut on the Billboard Top Bluegrass Albums Chart and third straight Top 3 entry. They've also earned critical acclaim from Billboard, Parade, NPR, and Rolling Stone who hailed them as “representing the genre for a whole new generation.” For the past century, bluegrass music has traditionally relayed real tales of American life, struggle, tragedy, and triumph. It gives a voice to the quiet, yet colorful stories woven into the fabric of the country itself. Greensky Bluegrass live these stories through their records and performances. When touring ceased in 2020 in the face of the global pandemic, the band hunkered down and compiled demos individually at first, sharing emails and voice notes. In July 2020, they got together for the first time in four months, dedicating rehearsals to the development of the new material. Once circumstances safely permitted, they recorded what would become Stress Dreams during a session in Guilford, VT and two sessions in Asheville, NC with frequent collaborator “and old friend” Dominic John Davis as producer and “wizard engineer” Glenn Brown mixing. They preserved the hallmarks of their sound while widening its expanse. “Greensky is and always has been very unique in our world,” says Paul Hoffman. “We put our love, energy, and focus into what we appreciate about our music. We come together as a band in a way that's organic. We take a lot of pride in how we grow and challenge each other too. We're maturing together. I think we get more Greensky all of the time.”We want to hear from you! There is a magic picnic basket on this show, a fantastical idea of a dream meal, and I struggle to recount how many of my 240+ guests have included a dish from Frank Stitt. Let's just say it's more than a few.. Writer Charles Gaines in Garden & Gun called him the Godfather of Southern Cuisine, and this James Beard award winner has built a dynasty of dining delight in Birmingham, AL with Highlands Bar & Grill, Chez Fonfon, and Bottega. A studious youth, he turned his philosophical eye from studying Plato to learning from Alice Waters, Simca Beck, and Richard Olney, not to mention Jeremiah Tower, but he's still as delighted at seasonal produce coming in the kitchen door as he;s ever been, the rotation of the culinary calendar a deep well of inspiration. That enthusiasm weaves its way through his restaurants, his staff, and the dishes that are crafted, and the idea of a restaurant as revelry, as reverence, and as a respite is perhaps Stitt's true philosophy shining forth.

Rebecca Rebouche is an American painter, writer, filmmaker, and entrepreneur known for her decade-long collaboration with international retailer Anthropologie and her large-scale paintings of allegorical family trees. John James Audubon meets Frida Kahlo in a Chagall dreamscape, her work is here to tell the story of us that we didn’t know needed telling. Her surreal naturalistic paintings paired with her intuitive journaling have drawn not only collectors but enthusiasts to her work, resulting in a model of artful living celebrated in The New York Times, Garden & Gun, Anthology Magazine, Madame Air France Magazine and The Great Discontent. Rebecca Rebouche is a New Orleans-based artist. She describes herself as “in service to tenderness, to people’s base humanity, and their highest rapture. "I clear my energy to create, to receive, to be in the exchange.” Whether she was drawing the backs of people’s heads in church or doodling in school, Rebecca’s talent was encouraged. She went on to study Fine Art and Graphic Design at college. After graduating, she worked in advertising before realizing she could be a full-time artist in her own right. Knowing what she wanted to do from an early age was a blessing and a curse. Creativity and being artistic was always the connecting thread in everything she did. It just took time to hone the method of expression. Rebecca feels like she has built her own language using art. Art in any form is a way of communicating with the universe what gives you life energy and joy. As a self-represented artist, Rebecca takes so much joy in planning her shows and exhibitions. It is about focusing energy on putting together and telling a story. When it comes to her creative process, Rebecca approaches it in a way that works for her natural ebbs and flows. There is plenty of food content out there. I know, of course, because I am making some of it, but also because I’m reading a lot of it, and a lot of it is vacuous, shallow, and sometimes downright incorrect. But there is also so much good thinking and good writing about food out there, and one such writer/content creator/ and chef is Amethyst Ganaway. Her bylines range from Serious Eats to Garden & Gun to Eater, and I believe she is one of a new generation of significant voices on the scene. Her scholarship and research is on point, yet because of the honest place from which she writes, it’s approachable, and not only do I love to read her writing, I love following along on Instagram for peeks inside her cooking life too. Originally from North Charleston, S.C., she’s currently living in New Mexico, where she is writing up a storm and craving South Carolina seafood.
Monte Burke is a journalist, New York Times bestselling author, and contributing editor at Forbes, Garden & Gun, and The Drake. His most recent book is Lords of the Fly: Madness, Obsession, and the Hunt for the World-Record Tarpon, which was one of the best books I read in 2020. He’s also the author of Saban: The Making of a Coach, which also happens to be one of my all-time favorite books. Whether he’s writing about fly fishing, Colorado conservationists, elk hunting, or football, Monte’s work is always impeccably researched and fun to read. - I loved every page of Lords of the Fly, and both anglers and non-anglers alike will be drawn into the book’s engaging story and wild characters. One of my favorite aspects of the book was how it opened my eyes to the connections between the 1970s Florida fishing scene and modern-day art, poetry, and literature of the American West. Western luminaries who are frequently mentioned on this podcast-- Tom McGuane, Jim Harrison, Richard Brautigan, Russell Chatham, and more-- all created art and chased tarpon together in Florida in the 1970s. They all eventually moved West and became some of the most respected western artists of their time, but were it not for the creative foundation they built in Florida, today’s western literary and art scene would look quite different. - Monte and I had a fun and wide-ranging conversation discussing everything from fly fishing to fatherhood. We started out talking about Lords of the Fly-- we obviously talked about the crew of anglers that included McGuane and Harrison, but we also discussed the full cast of obsessed characters who make up the history of fly fishing for tarpon. Monte explains why this story was so compelling to him, and he discusses some of the headwinds he encountered while trying to get the book published. We discuss Monte’s attraction to writing about intense, obsessed people, whether they happen to be world champion coaches or anglers. We chatted about Monte’s writing and journalism career, as well as some of the routines that allow him to be such a prolific writer. And as usual, we discuss favorite books, authors, films, and he offers up some wise parting words. - If you love fishing and literature, or if you’re an aspiring writer or artist, this episode is chock-full of useful information. Be sure to check out the show notes for links to everything we discuss-- this episode may very well hold the record for most books and authors recommended. Christiana Rousssel shares how she overcame crisis upon crisis~from divorce to cecal volvulus~in the midst of a pandemic. Crisis upon crisis On this episode of The SavvyCast, my friend Christiana shares how she endured crises upon crisis but came out better and stronger. While adjusting to a recent divorce, Christiana had a medical emergency caused by a rare condition~cecal volvulus. This happened in the midst of the COVID pandemic, which made the situation even more tenuous. Meet Christiana Roussel A food writer, Christiana's work can be found locally in Mountain Brook Magazine and Birmingham Home & Garden. She contributes to national publications such as Food & Wine, Garden & Gun, Good Grit and Sporting Classics. While food writing is her original passion, she has expanded her repertoire to include travel and sporting activities, and occasional upland adventures. One crisis after another In late April, Christiana discovered she had Cecal Volvulus, a rare but dangerous condition in which part of her colon was twisted. This caused her to be in an immense amount of pain which happened in the middle of the night. Christiana was alone, but through God's help was able to drive herself to the hospital. This health crisis followed a marital crisis, and it happened in the middle of the national crisis~the pandemic. Christiana had to pull from every reserve to forge through this difficult season. What we discuss in the podcast How she found out she had Cecal Volvulus. Her road to recovery mentally and physically. Her encounter with God throughout her health crisis. Christiana's advice to those facing health struggles. How Pilates helped her in the recovery process. Her warning to all of us to pay attention to our bodies Christiana is a strong woman of faith and grit, and I hope you are as inspired as I was when listening to her story. Through her time as a commercial banker, consultant, and mentor to budding entrepreneurs, she helped clients create solid business and financial strategies to help propel their business to success. While working with aspiring female entrepreneurs, Janice noticed that the same four themes kept repeating: Many women are uncomfortable with finance, both in their business and in their personal life. Women want access to more women mentors and advisors. Women often start businesses because they feel the corporate world doesn't fit their lifestyle. Few are motivated by purely financial reasons. Mothers didn't want money to drive their family decisions. From these themes, The Money, Career, & Motherhood Podcast was born. Now Janice spends her time helping mothers gain confidence and understanding about money, career, and business topics as they relate to motherhood and family – the way many women actually think about money. Janice loves helping mothers implement business and financial strategies within their families to help each family member thrive. Hanna Raskin, food editor of The Post and Courier in Charleston, SC, is one of the most respected food writers in the country. She’s written for many publications, from Garden & Gun to Cooking Light, won many awards, including from the James Beard Foundation, but it’s her restaurant reviews that seem to get the most buzz, from her time at the Seattle Weekly and the Dallas Observer to her current tenure in Charleston. Here in this city, her work has been at times highly controversial, and has spurred backlash, but that’s a testament to how many people take her publication and her opinion under serious consideration. While I don’t always agree with her, nor she with me, I do not in any way condone the attacks on her person. Writing -- and food -- is a conversation, and Hanna is smack dab in the thick of it.

Donna and Rachel are friends who aren’t afraid to ask questions, laugh loudly, obsess freely and covet vintage items. The pair created the Smart Mouth Life Podcast to celebrate women who run their mouths and the world. Today's episode features Kathleen Purvis who, for more than 25 years, most recently at the Charlotte Observer, has been an incredible food editor, columnist and reporter. In early 2019, she left the Observer to strike out on her own, and has since been nominated for a James Beard Foundation journalism award (her third time as a finalist) and had work published in Southern Living and Garden & Gun, among other media outlets. She’s published three books so far, the most recent is “Distilling The South,” and is a walking encyclopedia of southern foodways knowledge.
If you got invited to a dinner party with Oprah, Obama, and Andrew Zimmern (and wouldn’t that be some invite?!), chances are they’d want you to bring a baked good from Red Truck Bakery in Marshall, VA. Baker Brian Noyes has served cakes and pies to them and lots of other famous folks from his off-the-beaten-path spots -- now two of them -- in rural Virginia, but I found him through one perfect bite of Lexington Bourbon Cake at Garden & Gun’s Made in the South weekend. See, I don’t consider myself an expert cook but I do know my way around a bundt pan, and this cake was a confection of my dreams. For Brian, it’s a combination of culinary training, sourcing local, and plenty of “go big or go home” attitude that makes his work a continued and delicious success. I had to know more, and well, he said he’d fly to Charleston with pie. Who could turn that down?

Since opening his restaurant City Grocery in Oxford, Ms. more than 20 years ago, Chef John Currence’s name has become synonymous with Southern cooking. He’s received the Southern Foodways Alliance Guardian of Tradition Award, he’s won the James Beard Foundation award for Best Chef South, and he’s often a sought after writer -- just ask Garden & Gun, his book editors, or Esquire. City Grocery Restaurant Group now encompasses Snackbar and a growing number of Big Bad Breakfast locations, including the one I visited in Rosemary Beach that had a line out the door on a Saturday morning. Beyond the kitchen, he’s someone who speaks his mind on just about anything, and when I caught up with him at the 30A Wine Festival for a chat, he did just that.
Welcome! In this episode of Edacious, we meet a former magazine art director turned baker. A man who used the skills acquired in his old career to set the look, feel, and intention for his current one, creating a new community in the process. I became acquainted with Brian Noyes of Red Truck Bakery when I wrote about him a few years back for Unite Virginia magazine. Flash forward to a farm dinner at Caromont where we became fast friends. It was SUCH a treat to sit with this busy man and talk. About cake, pie, the people we've met, and what it means exactly to take that extra step of care, whether it's writing thank you notes to customers or making sure that cake on your plate is the best you’ve ever had. Brian’s attention to detail is so evident from the art on the walls to the sprinkle of salt atop the focaccia on my ham sandwich. Before we met he sent me a “How Do You Do?” cake! This level of curation makes every customer feel cared for whether they’re enjoying a Dutch streusel crumb apple pie at the shops in Warrenton and nearby Marshall or ordering a double chocolate cake to send to a loved one. I believe it stems from his previous career as an art director for the Washington Post, House and Garden, and Smithsonian magazines, among others, where an eagle eye is paramount to success. Red Truck has won accolades from Garden & Gun, The New York Times, Oprah Magazine, and countless others. With good reason. His Shenandoah apple cake brought tears to my eyes. And it’s not just pies and cakes. Both locations offer breakfast and lunch with muffins, biscuits, sandwiches and countless other goodies. His celebrated granola is the only cereal my picky friend will eat. I still dream about that sandwich and Brian’s chocolate cake is a constant request at family get-togethers. There are guaranteed future honors because the Red Truck Bakery cookbook comes out October 23rd! It’s a destination bakery. Folks travel from as far away as Florida. So the cookbook is not just about recipes, but a feeling. The story of a place. What it’s like to work and bake and live here in our part of the South. I cannot WAIT to make his okra pickles and pepper jelly and all the rest of the stuff that makes me loves Southern food the most. How did all of this begin? Flashback many years when Brian and his partner Dwight bought a farm, which of course needed a truck to make it complete. Brian found a beautiful candy apple red 1954 Ford F-100. Little did he know the seller was Tommy Hilfiger. To feed his creative passions, Brian started making jams, loaves of bread, and pastries, selling them at local farmer’s markets. When Marian Burros profiled his wares in The New York Times a small business quickly turned into a larger one with a readymade logo perfectly suited to the theme of “Rural Bakery”. Word spread quickly, so quickly they could barely keep up with demand. Brian found a space, some investors, and developed the look and feel for the bakery, of course making that beloved red truck the centerpiece. He eventually expanded to Marshall, adding a lunch counter to a historic mercantile space. It’s four times the size but once again, retains that homespun, friendly, country feel. All relating back to that red truck. His expertise is a result of his training at CIA, L’Academie de Cuisine, and King Arthur, all of which Brian completed while working as art director. Former President Barack Obama considers Red Truck’s Sweet Potato Bourbon Pecan Pie his favorite. A hand-delivered letter hanging in the shop says so. Robert Duvall cut the rope on the Marshall store. Tom Hagen and Sonny Corleone had lunch there once. Literally, half of The Godfather just eating sandwiches. Wow! You can order online for shipping through Goldbelly, but everything is baked and handled in Red Truck kitchens. Brian still looks at the orders himself, signs the card, and makes sure every order goes out perfectly. Which at Thanksgiving and Christmas can mean thousands of orders. He will only ship mincemeat pies because fruit pies don’t ship well. Pies and cakes are seasonal to keep it fresh. Ingredients like apples, peaches, moonshine, and sorghum are sourced locally and selected carefully. What happened when Brian agreed to made madeleines for Jacques Pépin and his daughter Claudine? What happened when his moonshine cake was profiled by The Today Show right before Christmas? What happens when weather threatens but you’re a nationally-recognized bakery with orders that still need to arrive on time? How do you keep your business going with skilled staff when you live and create in a small town? Is the revitalization of Warrenton and Marshall a blessing or a curse? Did Brian help art direct the cookbook? You’ll just have to listen. Then buy the Red Truck Bakery cookbook when it comes out October 23rd. Brian’s story has so much connection to it, how a chance meeting led to an opportunity, then another, and another. Just love that. Almost as much as I love that Shenandoah apple cake. Stay edacious! One of the issues that the birding community has been reckoning with for the last several years is our relative lack of diversity, at least in terms of black and brown faces in the field, and how we can encourage a broader coalition of nature enthusiasts to join us and to share the joy of birding. It's an issue that Dr. Drew Lanham has given a great deal of thought. Lanham is a distinguished professor of wildlife ecology at Clemson University, he sits on the boards of both National Audubon and the American Birding Association, and his memoir, The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair With Nature was published in 2017. Drew was recently profiled in the August/September issue of Garden & Gun magazine and he joins host Nate Swick to talk about his experiences as a black man who loves what he calls one of "the whitest things you can do". Also, news from the border as birders are given another opportunity to make their voices heard on the proposed border wall that will cut off several great birding locations. NWP welcomes David Guas! This charismatic chef, widely familiar from his frequent appearances on "The Today Show," brings a rugged charm as host and co-judge of "American Grilled," Travel Channel’s 13-episode high-heat, high-stakes cooking competition program, which aired throughout Summer of 2014. With no competition for attention, Guas has garnered national praise in publications like Food & Wine, Southern Living, Garden&Gun, Saveur and Bon Appétit for showcasing the soul of the South in his sinfully delicious, Louisiana-style favorites and signature desserts at the neighborly Arlington, Virginia restaurant, established in 2010, Bayou Bakery, Coffee Bar & Eatery. His second venue, opening spring 2015, will be Bayou Bakery, Coffee Bar & Eatery at Hill Center at the Old Naval Hospital, occupying an historic carriage house on Washington's Capitol Hill commissioned by President Abraham Lincoln at the height of the Civil War. Both offer discerning eaters a range of comforting options in a leisurely, rustic, counter-service hangout. http://www.chefdavidguas.com/#!
