Mark Harris, co-founder of ColdSpark strategies, was the General Consultant for the successful Dave McCormick 2024 Pennsylvania Senate race - arguably the lone true upset of the '24 Senate cycle. In this conversation, Mark talks his roots in PA politics - including running for office himself, ousting a sitting legislator in a GOP primary, and multiple stints helping elect and re-elect GOP Senator Pat Toomey. Then Mark goes deep on his role helping elect Dave McCormick to the US Senate - starting with McCormick's ill-fated '22 race...getting back on the horse in '24...clearing the GOP field...challenging a proven Pennsylvania political institution...and ultimately winning a close race many pundits expected to break toward the Democratic incumbent.IN THIS EPISODEMark's roots in Pittsburgh & why he ran for office when he was 22...Why running Pat Toomey's 2010 Senate race was Mark's "dream job"...Mark's front row seat to the tumultuous period of PA politics around veteran Senator Arlen Specter's 2009 switch from Republican to Democrat...Mark weighs in on how PA politics has transformed over the past 20 years...Mark's insight on how Pat Toomey won two tough Senate races, despite a non-traditional background for PA politics...How Mark and his firm initially connected with Dave McCormick in his first Senate race in 2022...How Mark was viewing the '24 race against Bob Casey over a year out...How the McCormick campaign navigated a Trump endorsement and cleared the GOP primary field...Mark's best practices on how GOP candidates should pursue a Trump endorsement...The headwinds of running against Senator Bob Casey...The appealing personal bio that McCormick brought to the race....How late focus groups changed the McCormick closing message...How the McCormick ad campaign departed from the traditional GOP playbook...The voter subgroups the McCormick campaign identified as the most important...How the McCormick campaign appealed to "soft pro choice voters" and Black and Latino men...Why the McCormick team was one of the only GOP campaigns that preferred Dems nominate Harris instead of Biden...Why the abortion issue didn't sink McCormick in a 60% pro-choice state...How Mark was interpreting results coming in on Election Night...Mark's thoughts on Democratic erosion in the Dem base in Philadelphia...The approach Mark brings to races as a General Consultant...Mark's views of the potential of PA Dems Josh Shapiro and John Fetterman as national candidates...Mark's travel tips for spending a couple of days in and around Pittsburgh...AND Lou Barletta, James Blair, Bob Brady, Bridgewater Associates, George W. Full Hour | Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by discussing the reaction to John Fetterman's NBC News interview with Dasha Burns, in which Dasha Burns admitted that there is a definite difference in the candidate now when compared to prior to his stroke. Burns said to an NBC News host that, even though multiple liberal reporters are pushing back with different opinions, she was the only one to sit in the same room with Fetterman alone and stands by her statements. Then, Dom provides an update on crime in Philadelphia, telling of a local news story of a Councilmember who noted that Wawa is considering cancelling their plans for expansion due to rampant theft, and reminds listeners that up to this point, Police still haven't arrested any of the multiple teens who ransacked a Wawa in Mayfair, an incident that went viral on the internet. Then, after announcing the today's Side Topic, Giordano plays back a clip from Joe Biden saying that his son Beau died in Iraq, with Dom using this to make his point again that Biden uses Beau's service anytime things are getting hard for the administration. Then, Dom welcomes in Senator Pat Toomey to the Dom Giordano Program to discuss his time spent as a United States Senator as he prepares for retirement. First, Dom takes Pat back to 12 years ago when he was elected as a Senator, asking what it felt like when he beat out Joe Sestak for the Senate seat. Then, Giordano discusses the legacy left by Toomey's time in office, with Pat explaining that he's always felt he's been a student of economics his whole adult life and willing to dig into the painful minutia of government budgeting and taxation, which became a large focus of his time in office. Also, Toomey tells of legislation that he helped launch and has supported throughout his time in office, including the work he's done to help police throughout the Country. Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by discussing the battle on Capitol Hill over voting rights, as those on the Left continue to drive a racial wedge into the issue. Giordano also plays back another angle of attack by the Left, with Senator Bob Casey Jr. trying to pull at heart strings by suggesting 90 year olds in rural areas have issues voting. This reminds Giordano of a time where he took on the same line of thought in a debate with Joe Sestak, prompting Dom to play back highlights from the debate. Then, Giordano swings into a conversation about Philadelphia schools, telling about a Pennsylvania Supreme Court battle over funding in the public schools. Dom uncovers the proficiency scores for inner-city schools and is absolutely appalled to see a passing rate under 10%. Giordano, producer Dan, and callers discuss potential solutions for schools, and tell why school choice would drive accountability into what has become a monopolized system. We broadcast live from South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, where tonight the first-ever Presidential Forum on Environmental Justice will be held. Six presidential candidates — Senators Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker, Tom Steyer, Marianne Williamson, John Delaney and Joe Sestak — are participating. The forum is hosted by the National Black Caucus of State Legislators and leaders from frontline communities. South Carolina is a crucial state for the 2020 presidential race and one of the first that will have a Democratic primary, following New Hampshire and caucuses in Iowa and Nevada. The region has been repeatedly pummeled by climate-fueled hurricanes, including Hurricane Florence, which swept through the South in 2018, causing epic floods. Black residents and communities of color have faced disproportionate air and water pollution and exposure to environmental hazards, but South Carolina is also home to some of the most successful responses to environmental racism. Ahead of Friday's presidential forum, we speak with Mustafa Ali, the forum's co-moderator and the former head of the environmental justice program at the Environmental Protection Agency. “It's important that we have these conversations about climate change, but those are the symptoms of a disease,” Ali says. “The disease has been the racism, the structural inequality, that continues to happen inside of communities of color.” The post Warren, Booker & Steyer to Take Part in First-Ever Presidential Forum on Environmental Justice appeared first on KPFA.
