Under a cloud of questions and a federal probe, Edward Caban resigned as commissioner of the NYPD on Thursday. Caban was tapped by Mayor Eric Adams to be NYPD commissioner in July 2023, replacing Keechant Sewell and was the first Latino to hold the position. The news of Caban's resignation comes after sources told NY1 last Thursday that federal investigators visited his house and took his phones, and seized electronic devices from several other NYPD executives. NY1 investigative reporter Courtney Gross, NY1 criminal justice reporter Dean Meminger and political director Bob Hardt look at Caban's decision to step down, the federal investigation into the NYPD's nightclub enforcement practices and Caban's interim replacement, Tom Donlon, a retired FBI officer. After that, the “Off Topic” team looks at the many members of the Adams administration currently under investigation and the announcement that state Senator Jessica Ramos will challenge Adams in the 2025 primary. Facing a growing population of migrants, Mayor Eric Adams announced that the city will limit shelter stays for single adult asylum seekers to 60 days. NY1 political reporters Bobby Cuza and Kelly Mena and NY1 political anchor Errol Louis weigh in on this policy change and whether it can be successfully implemented. They also discuss the mayor's announcement that the city will be passing out flyers at the U.S.-Mexican border to deter people from coming to New York City. The mayor also appointed the first Latino to be the city's top cop, Edward Caban. Caban replaces Keechant Sewell, who resigned suddenly last month. The “Off Topic/On Politics” team discusses the role of a police commissioner in the Adams administration and how Caban may be able to outlast the short term of his predecessor. On this Tuesday edition of Sid & Friends in the Morning, Edward Caban is introduced as the newest commissioner of the NYPD, succeeding Keechant Sewell and officially becoming the first Hispanic to hold the position. Sid argues that he doesn't care if Caban what ethnicity Caban is, as long as he's committed to making the city a safer place. In other news of the day, Rikers Island is on the verge of being put under federal control, more fallout continues to trickle into the news cycle regarding the Gilgo Beach killer, 2024 candidate Donald J. Trump's hunt for the perfect running mate, the anti-Semitism seemingly running rampant in the Democrat party, Charles Barkley rushing to Bud Light's defense amid the Dylan Mulvaney controversy, and the New York Football Giants fail to agree on terms with Saquon Barkley on a new deal meaning the running back now has the option to hold out and not take the field. This week, Keechant Sewell suddenly announced her resignation from leading the nation's largest police department. The decision comes only one-and-a-half years into her tenure and at a time when all major crime categories were trending down. Sewell became New York City's first woman police commissioner when Mayor Eric Adams appointed her to the position in December 2021. NY1's Juan Manuel Benítez, Courtney Gross and Emily Ngo weighed in on the commissioner's decision, and discussed the unusually high rate of turnover in the Adams administration. After that, City Council primaries are less than two weeks away and the “Off Topic/On Politics” team highlighted several of the more competitive races, including one in District 1 in Chinatown and Lower Manhattan. One of the key issues in that race is how the closing of the city's jails on Rikers Island could affect the district. They also looked at District 9 in Harlem, where a serious concern is affordable housing. Finally, the team briefly explained ranked-choice voting. Spectrum News NY1 hosted two City Council primary debates for District 1 and District 9. You can watch both of the debates on NY1.com. On this Wednesday edition of Sid & Friends in the Morning, New York City Mayor Eric Adams finally speaks on the sudden resignation of his now former police commissioner Keechant Sewell, firing back at reports that it was his own micromanagement of the police commissioner that spelled her eventual voluntary exit. Who's really to blame here? Were the commissioner and the Mayor rifting behind closed doors? These are questions we may never have the privilege of knowing the answers to. In other news of the day, former President Donald J. On this Tuesday edition of Sid & Friends in the Morning, there is trouble at City Hall with the news of police commissioner Keechant Sewell's resignation coming down yesterday. The commissioner's exit comes as a huge surprise to just about everyone except for Sid Rosenberg, who sensed some fishiness surrounding the relationship between the commissioner and Mayor Eric Adams. Clearly, the Mayor doesn't have the type of hold over his administration that we originally thought he might've. In other news of the day, the Mayor signs an executive order protecting gender-affirming medical care in New York City, former President Donald Trump arrives in Miami for his second arraignment, and the Denver Nuggets beat the Miami Heat in Game 5 of the NBA Finals to claim the 2023 title and their first in franchise history. Former Congressman Peter King - Keechant Sewell, a great choice for NYPD Commissioner. by John Catsimatidis
Keechant Sewell will soon become the first woman — and only the third Black person — in history to lead the NYPD. NY1's Zack Fink, Courtney Gross and Juan Manuel Benítez dive into the significance of this appointment, and explain why this job is as much about politics as it is about public safety. They also weigh in on the contentious race for City Council speaker. The two finalists have both declared victory. So what is happening behind the scenes? And, as a bonus segment, they also evaluate Mayor de Blasio's environmental record. Making the city more resilient and adaptable to the climate crisis was a pillar of his campaign for mayor. But now that he's getting ready to leave office, his results on this issue are getting mixed reviews.
