Welcome to the Spring/Summer series of the Back To The Garden Podcast. Todays guest, Mary Mclachlan, founded the Wood School in Manchester in 2010. Most people just want to be right. If you've ever paid close attention to how people talk to each other, nobody is actually listening. It's just a game of right vs. wrong where the “listener” is just waiting for the other person to stop talking so they can talk again. This is not listening. It's not even effective communication. Listening and communication are skills that need to be developed—skills that many adults don't ever end up mastering. This gets compounded when we become parents. If we haven't learned how to effectively communicate by the time we have children, we then make it damn near impossible for our children to learn and master these skills. It becomes a vicious cycle that makes relationships exhausting and hard. You've heard me discuss how many of our issues actually stem from our childhood. This is no different. As a child, I grew up in a very authoritarian household. My parents were my parents, not my friends. We were spanked, shouted at, and punished — we even had a naughty step and went to a boarding school. I never felt understood or listened to. I spent much of my childhood rebelling and doing whatever I could to be the exact opposite of my parents (which is actually what most children do when their parents aren't effective communicators). I craved acceptance and individuality but didn't receive those things from my parents. But I vowed to be the total opposite of them and have spent my entire adult life seeking and learning how to do better, especially for my own kids. I have never punished my children. They've never been shamed, shouted at, talked down to, or suppressed. I ask them questions and nurture their individuality. I teach them how to seek answers for themselves. And most importantly? I accept them for who they are, and they know and feel that every single day. If every parent can learn these important skills, we will witness a massive transformation in future generations. In this podcast, I will teach you exactly how to listen so your kids will talk and talk so your kids will listen. And in turn, your kids will have the healthiest, most fulfilling relationships at every level. Listen closely as I share the following strategies (and examples) that you can implement immediately in all of your relationships. But know this: it's not enough for you to simply listen and read these strategies. You must actively apply them in your life every chance you get. Strategies to have a better relationship with your kids: Use “It seems/sounds like…” questions to establish what they want. Ask “why” questions. Ask, “What would be the downside if you didn't get it?” (this identifies the REAL problem) Ask, “Why do you need it to be that way?” (this establishes the emotional attachment) I really hope you enjoy this episode! What should Americans think about the dangers of an increasingly Woke and politicized U.S. military under President Joe Biden? We'll talk about it. Plus: An outrageous California bill could ban conservative Christians and registered Republicans from serving in law enforcement. And author Becky Harling stops by to talk about her book, "How to Listen So Your Kids Will Talk." That and more on Wednesday's JANET MEFFERD TODAY.
So how well do you know your kids? I don’t mean their likes or dislikes… I’m talking about how well you know what’s going on inside their head and their heart. No matter their personality, it’s so important to create a relationship that allows our kids to feel important and understood. But I’ll be the first to admit: That’s not always easy.Today on the podcast, I have a fun conversation to share with you with Becky Harling, a popular speaker and best-selling author of 11 books. We had such a fun time swapping some funny parenting stories, and Becky shares some practical wisdom about how she learned to love her kids without trying to control them, how parents can validate emotions without validating negative behavior, and what it looks like to parent from a place of humility.Above all else: Both Becky and I want you to know that it truly is possible to build a meaningful and lasting relationship with your kids. It’s not always easy, it requires intention (and patience and grace and so much more!), but it’s so possible. I hope this conversation equips you to take one step in the direction of helping your kids feel heard, understood, and valued. Hey guys!! In this week's episode, I wanted to speak on how to listen so that your kids will talk. Last week, I spoke on how to talk so that your kids will listen and I felt that it would be a good idea to talk about the other side of that this week which is listening to your kids. I believe that it is important that we give our children a chance to speak so that we can know how they feel and how things affect them. Author, speaker and leadership coach Becky Harling says there are three keys for a great relationship with your children: Seek God for wisdom, listen with the goal of understanding, and become a student of your child so your knowledge of their unique personality grows. Listen to our conversation for great tips and insight!
Does how we listen affect if or how much our children communicate with us? Wednesday we discuss this question with author Becky Harling who shares some of the ways parents can foster a deeper connection with their children through listening. Becky will share what kind of listening draws us closer to our children and what could be keeping us from being our child's confidante.
Good parenting depends on good communication. The problem is, we parents tend to over-talk. Not only is this ineffective, it discourages children from sharing what's on their hearts. In this immensely practical book, communications expert Becky Harling shares the best listening practices to transform your family's relationships and set your children up for success. This week on the podcast, we’re discussing two key clips from a recent conversation between John Maxwell, Simon Sinek, and Mark Cole. They discuss the importance of listening and empathy when it comes to leading and connecting with people––especially those unlike us. During the application portion of this episode, Mark Cole and Jason Brooks discuss what we can accomplish by listening to others and stepping out of our own perspective. During times of tension, we often avoid the most pertinent conversations because we find them uncomfortable. But this episode will encourage you to lean into the discomfort that growth requires of us. Our BONUS resources for this episode are the Leaders Listen Worksheet, which includes fill-in-the-blank notes from John’s teaching, and the live video of the entire discussion between John, Simon, and Mark. *DISCLAIMER: We recorded this podcast on March 11, which was just before it became abundantly clear to us that COVID-19 was not just on our doorstep, it was in our figurative yard, and in our figurative garage. Therefore you will hear us (and in particular, Caitlin) continue to question the contagion, the responses, the leading edge worriers, and overall what we should have been doing. Rest assured listeners, we have since done a 180 degree shift and are aggressively social distancing. Enjoy our naivete and blissful unawareness about what was about to hit us. Know that we have changed, that it’s ok to change your mind and do better. Please: STAY HOME. Caitlin talks about a recent hard night she had with both boys, and how she’s begun snoring. Special guests: Joanna Faber & Julie King. What do you do with a little kid who won't brush his teeth? Screams in his car seat? Pinches the baby? Refuses to eat her vegetables? Throws books at the library and runs rampant in the restaurant? We've all been there. How many of us have seen the parent with the child at the supermarket who is throwing one big tantrum in the cereal aisle because s/he won't buy the super sugar rainbowloops that he had to-- HAD TO-- have? How many of us have BEEN that parent with that child? No judgment- we are here to discuss it and get some strategies and scripts to all parents who have ever had some trouble with their young kids. Many of you who are hungry for parenting and teaching knowledge probably know the blockbuster best-selling book, How to Listen So Kids will Listen and Listen so Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish. It's a staple on my shelf. Well, Adele Faber has a daughter, Joanna Faber who not only grew up being the recipient of all the strategies Faber and Mazlish described in their mega-bestseller, but also wrote a follow up book with her childhood best friend, Julie King that takes a similar structure, using common challenges of young children and provides tool after tool to help anyone with children ages 2-7. Joanna Faber and Julie King are the authors of How To Talk So Little Kids Will Listen: A Survival Guide to Life with Children Ages 2-7 (Scribner 2017). Listen here or READ the post below: We are shifting our focus this month from concerns that parents have about their kids to concerns the EXPERTS have about our kids. For the next five weeks, we are going to let you know what issues the therapists are seeing over and over again in their work. We are also going to let you know what you need to do to avoid the sad situations they are dealing with. I can't stress enough how important the information you are going to learn in July is! Make sure you check out each post/podcast made in this month! For today: We get to discuss how to keep your kids open with you and talking with you about what is going on in their world. Would you believe that how you LISTEN to your kids can significantly affect their willingness to share what's going on in their lives with you? Read below the learn the three-letter acronym you must remember to keep your children open with you. Why we want our kids to be open with us Let's first think about WHY we want our kids to be open with us in the first place. When we understand how important it is to keep the lines of communication open between parent and child, we feel more motivated to do what it takes to keep those lines of communication open. While there could be hundreds of reasons why, I want to highlight just a few: So we can know what struggles they are facingHow can we really know what struggles our children are dealing with, what's going on in the heart and head, if they don't feel like they can talk to us? So much of their day is spent away from us, and the only way we can get a glimpse of what their life is like is if they tell us.We want them to be open with us so we know if there are some serious struggles that they are facing, struggles that they need help and guidance to overcome. In some situations, our kids being open with us could truly be the difference between life and death. So we can stay connected to themCommunication is the key to connection. When communication breaks down in a relationship, the relationship breaks down as well. SO much research has been done on how vital good communication is to each relationship. In fact, if a couple that is struggling to stay together can resolve their communication issues, they can often save the relationship. Why does communication matter so much? There is just something that happens when we share our thoughts, worries, joys, and feelings with another. We feel like someone really cares when they listen to us. Especially if they listen in the right way.The connection that comes from listening well to our kids can help them feel deeply loved by us and the reality is, KIDS BEHAVE BETTER WHEN THEY FEEL CONNECTED TO THEIR PARENTS. Study after study confirms that the kids who behave the best had parents that were:a. Firm about boundaries and rules b. Connected with their kidsListening the way we're going to teach you today can create bonding feelings in both the parent and the child. How to Keep Our Kids Open With Us We wanted a way for parents to easily remember the steps of listening, so we created an acronym to help you out. The acronym to remember is: R S V That acronym may look familiar to many of you. It's also the acronym for an upper respiratory virus that can make it hard to breath. We used this acronym on purpose. We want your kids to feel safe enough when talking to you that they feel like they can breath. We know that's cheesy, but sometimes cheesy things are easier to remember. Let's learn more about this acronym. R=Receive The first step to listening well is to simple receive the information that your children are sharing with you. How many times are you only half listening when your kids are talking to you? How many times are you thinking about something else while giving a mindless "Uh huh. Oh that's interesting." Have you ever done that so much that your kids caught you or you accidentally agreed to let them do something tha...
Is failure a tattoo or simply a bruise? Can you allow your children to struggle and be uncomfortable? This week we talk about the importance of the struggle in developing our own little butterflies. It may be hard, yet it's so important in fostering resilience with our children. Listen to this episode on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, TuneIn, YouTube, iHeartRadio or your RSS Feed The Mama Says Namaste Podcast song has arrived! For the full version of cuteness, I recommend you hop over to our YouTube channel and watch this video of us singing it live! Where are we? Orlando, Florida…right down the road from Disneyworld, not land. See our pictures and follow our adventures on Instagram as @FieldTripGypsies You cannot control what your children are exposed to; you can only influence the way they perceive it. Ask questions instead of simply filling in the gaps. New way to lose…and everything to gain: The importance of “failure” in our lives – and how to step back from being your child’s savior. Read the full summary on Functional Education here. Not sure what personality style your child is? Check out the Namaste Snapshot for kids! The documentary we watched on Netflix about birth and differences was “9 Months That Made You” - it was fascinating! 3 Ways To Allow The Struggle Be the Guide: help your child prepare for their own independence. Coach/practice in order to allow them to do it on their own. You stay by their side through the practice portion, but the actual performance is all on the child. Be the Pusher: allow them to butt up against the edge of their own limitations. Don't force, but nudge them beyond what they believe they are capable of (for example, swimming and holding breath underwater). Challenge them beyond their fear. Get uncomfortable/scared/nervous and bump against that to help build your comfort zone even more. Go past the boundary and expand. Marie Forleo’s video on the comfort zone and the growth zone: Are you afraid of taking your business to a whole new level? Step out of the way: allow your children to experience anger, pain, loss/grief, frustration, loneliness, etc. Let them hash it out on their own and come to their own conclusions, or feel the impact of the negative feeling. Oftentimes this is what is needed for the lesson to be learned. “By trying to protect children from disappointment, we protect them from hoping, striving, dreaming and sometimes from achieving their dreams.” Adele Faber & Elaine Mazlish (How to Talk so Kids Will Listen & Listen so Kids Will Talk.) We cannot feel the triumph of success when we don't allow for the defeat of a perceived failure. Your challenge this week: Step out of the way. Don't swoop in or interpret every step with your children. Pay attention to your own struggles and model it for your children. Unpack your own experience for building resilience and allow the struggle, just like a butterfly in a cocoon. Next week, we’ll talk about credibility - what qualifies you as a teacher…or are you comfortable with being a guide? What does that mean? What type of parent - and guide are you? Allow for space to struggle this week. Push a little further than you believe is possible - for you, and for your children. And celebrate the struggle, and the opportunity for growth, as one more step in recognizing how the uniqueness in each of us strengthens all of us. Care for some Q&A? Hit us with any questions you have regarding education/school in your home. Ask in the Mama Says Namaste or Unschooling Families Facebook groups. Share with us your thoughts - where have you struggled and feared failure? how have you grown from it and become a better person because of it? If we reference you on the podcast, we will also send you a free “Mamaste” shirt – fresh off the presses! And remember, if you’re liking what you hear, we want to hear from you! • Subscribe, rate and review on whatever platform you listen • Post your comments/questions in the Mama Says Namaste Facebook Community • Reach out and talk to us!

How do you become a Biz woman who ROCKS? Listen to our Interview with Avi Gardner of Front and Center Marketing! What blew me away the most about Avi Gardner was just how scrappy she is! Her company Front and Center Marketing is a niche business that focuses on helping health food brands get their product into the mouths of potential customers through sampling, whether that be through coupons or actual tastings at venues. She has a unique story of going from corporate to starting her business to jumping back into corporate while doing the "side hustle," all the while growing her company any way she could! In this inspiring interview, she shares what any company should do in order to optimize "sampling" to their market and how she's built a $2 million business by 100% word of mouth marketing! http://BizWomenRock.com/126 Avi's Kick-A$$ Quotes: We are all word of mouth, so the most effective marketing strategy that we have is doing a really good job with what we do. Don't get so into yourself that you can't see what's the right thing to do for your business. I'm the kind of person who's always going to succeed so I'm just gonna get out there and find another client. Avi's Favorite 5: 1.
