Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/FloppyDays Sponsors: 8-Bit Classics  Arcade Shopper   Welcome to Floppy Days #125 for April, 2023.  And I'm your host, Randy Kindig. We are currently in the year 1982 for home computers.  This episode is the continuation of a multi-episode arc that covers the Sinclair ZX Spectrum through all the usual topics.  This is the seventh of those, with the first having been the interview with John Grant of Nine Tiles, the second and third being coverage of the history of the Spectrum with Alessandro Grussu, the fourth being the interview with the author of the terrific book “The ZX Spectrum Ula: How to Design a Microcomputer”, Mr. Chris Smith, the fifth covering tech specs for the Speccy with Chris, and the sixth covering the topics peripherals, using the machine, and magazines with PJ Evans, Tour Guide and Sinclair curator at The National Museum of Computing on Bletchley Park in the U.K. The topics covered in this episode include books, software, ads, modern upgrades, emulation, buying one today, community, and Web sites.  Once again, my co-host will be PJ Evans, who did a wonderful job last episode.  This will be the final episode covering the ZX Spectrum, after setting the record in terms of number of episodes on Floppy Days about a single machine. As usual, I will also talk a bit about what I have been up to, including an update on any new acquisitions that have come my way.  In addition, I'll briefly tell you about upcoming shows of which I'm aware. Before we get started I want to mention the show sponsors for Floppy Days. https://www.8bitclassics.com, run by my friend Corey Koltz, is a great place to get vintage computer items.  This includes video cables, power supplies, PC boards, cartridges, upgrades and more for a wide variety of vintage computer platforms.  In the New Acquisitions section I cover each month on this show, often one of the items I talk about has been ordered from 8-Bit Classics.  Corey has been a friend of the show for some time and I really appreciate his support of the podcast.  Check out the site… he has some great stuff. https://www.arcadeshopper.com, run by my friend Greg McGill, is another terrific site to get vintage computer items.  Greg has a wide variety of hard-to-find items for a large number of platforms.  This is another site that I do and have done a lot of shopping at and have mentioned numerous times on Floppy Days.  If anything shows out of stock, just ping Greg through the contact form and he can check whether he has or can get more of the item for you. I also wanted to mention those listeners who appreciate the show enough to donate through patreon.com.  This includes Chris Petzel, Tony Cappellini, laurens, Richard Goulstone, Josh Malone, Andy Collins, Simon McCullough, Jason Moore, Quentin Barnes.  I really appreciate you guys and it helps offset the cost of running the podcast. Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to.Joining Tim this time is sports writer Carrie Dunn, who is scouring the VAR for any evidence of Tony Slattery sitcom Just A Gigolo, Don't You Worry by Madasun, the Sinclair ZX Spectrum + 2 James Bond Action Pack, The Isle Of Wight Waxworks Museum, stage musical remount Rent Remixed and Channel 4's coverage of the Women's FA Cup. Along the way we'll be finding out how to conduct a Desmond Llewelyn Rave, studying the geological effects of the Slattery Onslaught, treating Steptoe And Son to a jaaaaam-style makeover and debating who would 'win' out of Denise Van Outen and DCI Gene Hunt. You can find more editions of Looks Unfamiliar at http://timworthington.org/.If you enjoy Looks Unfamiliar, you can help to support the show by buying us a coffee here.

Some podcasters just want to watch the world burn. We just want to talk about Batman. With the newest Bat-flick coming in March, fellow mega-Bat-fan Paul and I wanted to walk through Batman's history in video games. We do kind of breeze through the entire history of Batman games, but we focus most of our discussion on the games we've played (or that seem odd or important). We also talk more broadly about our own history with the character and universe, our favorite villains and Batman actors, toys, and all kinds of other Bat-details. We also talk about Sony's acquisition of Bungie, which Nintendo character we think would start an OnlyFans, Hitman 2 and 3, and more. Dave Joshua is the man who is going to ‘revolutionise the bus industry'. That's quite a claim for this native of Gloucestershire who is now General Manager for Optibus in the UK and Europe. With a background in data and software, he's also a ‘newbie' in the bus industry and brings with him clarity of thought that comes from standing outside of the wood, while the rest of us are in with the trees. Chatting over lunch with Leon Daniels, he talks about the huge opportunity in front of us - but adds that a “level of bravery is required.”  “One the greatest things the bus industry needs to realise is the impact it can bring to the individual. But to make that change, it has to change itself.” Dave Joshua says. He argues that we need to alter the perception of the industry to treat it like a utility, not a ‘nice to have'. “We need to change the bus industry so the next generation coming through, use it like brushing your teeth - they do it without thinking about it.” At the moment, you need to know so much about transport before you use it, “a bit like an entrance exam,” observes Leon Daniels.  When we turn on a tap, water comes out. We don't need to know who supplied it, what process it went through and what source it comes from. So is it possible that transport can become as intuitive? You hold your hand out and it's just there. Well, that's what optimisation and big data is about is about.  If you thought that this is all about straightforward bus scheduling, you'd be wrong. That's like comparing a Sinclair ZX Spectrum with today's latest laptops…

Hello, welcome to Floppy Days Podcast #92, coming to you in July, 2019.  This month, I’m bringing to you an interview I’ve had in my backlog for almost 2 years now.  Thank goodness, most of the information on Floppy Days is timeless, so the interview is just as relevant today as it was then.  Anyway, I’m very happy to present an interview with Mr. Dave Lagerquist, who was the editor of both the CLOAD cassette magazine, which was produced for the TRS-80 Model I and Model III, and Chromasette cassette magazine, which was produced for the Tandy Color Computer. As usual, I will cover a few new acquisitions, a run-down of upcoming shows and other news, a piece of feedback, and then we’ll get right into the meat of the interview. Episode 90 - Interview with Lee Felsenstein (Osborne 1) Welcome to episode 90 of the Floppy Days Podcast for April, 2019. In the timeline for personal computer introductions, we are now in the year 1981.  For this episode, and actually the next couple as well, we are going to be talking about the Osborne 1. The Osborne 1 was the first commercially successful portable microcomputer, released on April 3, 1981 by Osborne Computer Corporation.  It was powered by the Z80 CPU, weighed 24.5 lb, cost US$1,795, and ran the CP/M operating system. It was powered from a wall socket, as it had no on-board battery, but is a portable device since it can be hand-carried when packed.  The computer shipped with a large bundle of software that was almost equivalent in value to the machine itself. The Osborne 1 was the brain child of Adam Osborne and was brilliantly engineered by Lee Felsenstein.  So, who better to have help me talk about the machine than Lee Felsenstein himself. To kick off this series, we’re going to spend some time with Lee talking about his time before and after the Osborne 1.  And then in the next show we will talk about the history surrounding the Osborne 1 itself. Finally, we will cover the usual computer topics such as tech specs, emulators, Web sites, and more. Chiptune is the electronic music that was integral to the experience of playing the early computer games like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. And the art of composing a chiptune was all about being innovative in the face of the constraints that came with using a simple sound chip.“One of the really nice things about Chiptune is because it is so raw and open and simple, you are forced into a situation where you have no option but to create,” says Professor Kenny McAlpine, a Melbourne Enterprise Fellow in interactive composition at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and author of Bits and Pieces: A History of Chiptunes.“Because of the constraints of the sound chip, because they could only do limited music, the composers, when they tried to step outside of those constraints and push beyond them, had to look for other ways of achieving complexity and that had to happen through code,” he says. The irony is that despite all the creativity and ingenuity that goes into making a great Chiptune, Professor McAlpine says the best soundtracks shouldn’t be noticed.“They should get under your skin, they should affect you. All I want you to do is play and be in the moment.”Episode recorded: March 28, 2019. Interviewer: Steve Grimwade. Producer, audio engineer and editor: Chris Hatzis. Jakie platformy emulujemy i dlaczego? Nasze preferowane gatunki gier preferujemy i ulubione tytuły – w co gramy najczęściej / graliśmy ostatnio. Nasz stosunek do reklam i modelu freemium? Jak widzimy przyszłość gier (AI, AR, VR, itp.)? Czy korzystamy z cheatów, solucji, kodów? Największe wg nas rozczarowania w branży gier, na jakie tytuły czekamy? Garść linków do tytułów, narzędzi i miejsc, które wspominamy jak zwykle poniżej. Platformy dystrybucji cyfrowej gier: Mac App Store (Apple), iTunes App Store (Apple), Steam (Valve Corporation), Origin (Electronic Arts), GOG (CD Projekt), Humble Bundle (Humble Bundle Inc.), Mac Game Store (Inside Mac Games, Ltd.). Futility Closet
126-The Great Australian Poetry Hoax

Futility Closet

In 1943, fed up with modernist poetry, two Australian servicemen invented a fake poet and submitted a collection of deliberately senseless verses to a Melbourne arts magazine. To their delight, they were accepted and their author hailed as "one of the most remarkable and important poetic figures of this country." In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell the story of the Ern Malley hoax, its perpetrators, and its surprising legacy in Australian literature. We'll also hear a mechanized Radiohead and puzzle over a railroad standstill. Intro: In 1896 an English statistician decided that "brass instruments have a fatal influence on the growth of the hair." The Lincoln Electric Company presented a check made of steel to each winner of a 1932 essay contest. Sources for our feature on Ern Malley: Michael Heyward, The Ern Malley Affair, 1993. Brian Lloyd, "Ern Malley and His Rivals," Australian Literary Studies 20:1 (May 2001) 20. Philip Mead, "1944, Melbourne and Adelaide: The Ern Malley Hoax," in Brian McHale and Randall Stevenson, eds., The Edinburgh Companion to Twentieth-Century Literatures in English, 2006. The Ern Malley website contains the complete story and poems. In June 2002 Jacket Magazine ran a special "hoax" issue, with much background and commentary on the Malley story. Listener mail: Radiohead's "Nude" played by a Sinclair ZX Spectrum, an Epson LX-81 dot matrix printer, an HP Scanjet 3c, and an array of hard drives. Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" via Super Mario World. "Logická Hádanka" by Horkýže Slíže -- a Slovak punk band sings a lateral thinking puzzle (translation and solution in video description). Guy Clifton and Emerson Marcus, "A Tale of the '70s: When D.B. Cooper's Plane Landed in Reno," Reno Gazette-Journal, July 13, 2016. Ralph P. Himmelsbach and Thomas K. Worcester, Norjak: The Investigation of D.B. Cooper, 1986. This week's lateral thinking puzzle was devised by Greg, who collected these corroborating links (warning -- these spoil the puzzle). While it was always Geoff Keighley's noble intention to create an annual awards ceremony truly befitting the games industry freed from it's Spike TV origins, what it means most of all to us gamers is a first glimpse of what we might (#NOT) be playing in a year or so's time. Indeed, the number of trailers premiering at this and Sony's Playstation Experience event in Vegas the other weekend almost put E3 to shame - and all while we're in the midst of gorging ourselves on a feast of AAA holiday releases. Ordinarily this would be enough to fill an episode, but this being our final episode of the year we decided to cover everything else that happened over the past couple weeks, including the sad passing of the Grandfather of Gaming, Ralph Baer, the resurrection of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, the setting of next year's Assassin's Creed game and our thoughts on the first episode of Telltale's Game of Thrones opus. All this and a whole lot more on this final #NOTplaying Podcast of 2014. If you think Spectrum music is just a load of beeps and squidgy noises then think again! The show contains some fantastic tunes from legendary game musicians including Martin Galway, David Whittaker and Ben Daglish. As well as music from the Speccy the show also contains remixes of Spectrum tunes (including an exclusive intro track by Tonka), music from the ZX Spectrum Orchestra and even remixes of Spectrum tunes done on other computers!
