Many in the international community believe that it is the only solution. After the horrific massacres of October 7th, 2023, the international community is once again amplifying the call for a two-state solution. Instead of punishing the Arabs for their violent acts of terrorism and unspeakable brutality, the international community took this opportunity to pressure Israel to make concessions and to take steps towards granting the Palestinians their own, independent state. Is this something which can ever happen? What do the Arabs really want? Do they want to live in harmony and peace with their Jewish neighbors? Is there any evidence that they willing to accept the existence and legitimacy of the state of Israel? From everything we know and from everything that history tells us, the answer is a resounding no. Allowing the Palestinians to have a state on Israel's borders would be a bloody catastrophe waiting to happen.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Thoughts on EA, post-FTX, published by RyanCarey on September 10, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Introduction This is a draft that I largely wrote back in Feb 2023, how the future of EA should look, after the implosion of FTX. I. What scandals have happened and why? 1. There are several reasons that EA might be expected to do harm and have scandals: a) Bad actors. Some EAs will take harmful actions with a callous disregard for others. (Some EAs have psychopathic tendencies, and it is worth noting that that utilitarian intuitions correlate with psychopathy.) b) Naivete. Many EAs are not socially competent, or streetsmart, enough to be able to detect the bad actors. Rates of autism are high in EA, but there are also more general hypotheses. Social movements may in-general by susceptible to misbehaviour, due to young members having an elevated sense of importance, or being generally impressionable. See David Chapman on "geeks, mops and sociopaths" for other hypotheses. c) Ideological aspects. Some ideas held by many EAs - whether right or wrong, and implied by EA philosophy or not - encourage risky behaviour. We could call these ideas risky beneficentrism (RB), and they include: i. High risk appetite. ii. Scope sensitivity iii. Unilateralism iv. Permission to violate societal norms. Violating or reshaping an inherited morality or other "received wisdom" for the greater good. iv. Other naive consequentialism. Disregard of other second-order effects There are also hypotheses that mix or augment these categories: EAs might be more vulnerable to generally psychopathic behaviour due to that kind of decision-making appearing superficially similar to consequentialist decision-making 2. All of (a-c) featured in the FTX saga. SBF was psychopathic, and his behaviour included all five of these dimensions of risky beneficentrism. The FTX founders weren't correctly following the values of the EA community, but much of what would be warning signs to others (gambling-adjacency, the Bahamas, lax governance) weren't to us pursuing a risky, scope-sensitive, convention-breaking, altruistic endeavour. And we outside EAs, perhaps due to ambition and naivete, supported these activities. 3. Other EA scandals, similarly, often involve multiple of these elements: [Person #1]: past sexual harassment issues, later reputation management including Wiki warring and misleading histories. (norm-violation, naive conseq.) [Person #2]: sexual harassment (norm-violation? naive conseq?) [Person #3] [Person #4] [Person #5]: three more instances of crypto crimes (scope sensitivity? Norm-violation, naive conseq.? naivete?) Intentional Insights: aggressive PR campaigns (norm-violation, naive conseq., naivete?) Leverage Research, including partial takeover of CEA (risk appetite, norm-violation, naive conseq, unilateralism, naivete) (We've seen major examples of sexual misbehaviour and crypto crimes in the rationalist community too.) EA documents have tried to discourage RB, but this now seems harder than we thought. Maybe promoting EA inevitably leads to significant amounts of harmful RB. 4. People have a variety of reasons to be less excited about growing EA: EA contributed to a vast financial fraud, through its: People. SBF was the best-known EA, and one of the earliest 1%. FTX's leadership was mostly EAs. FTXFF was overwhelmingly run by EAs, including EA's main leader, and another intellectual leader of EA. Resources. FTX had some EA staff and was funded by EA investors. PR. SBF's EA-oriented philosophy on giving, and purported frugality served as cover for his unethical nature. Ideology. SBF apparently had an RB ideology, as a risk-neutral act-utilitarian, who argued a decade ago why stealing was not in-principle wrong, on Felicifia. In my view, his ideology, at least as he professed it, could best b...

Violeta Edelman's fascinating journey begins in the Amazon. She was a curious 20-year-old from Buenos Aires looking for the answers to life and searching for a soulmate at, of all places, an ayahuasca conference. She found her soulmate, wound up in Washington, D.C., and launched a gelato business with lots of enthusiasm but zero experience. There were lots of tears, expensive mistakes, and a contractor who ran off with their money, but they found a passionate audience for Dolcezza Gelato and things eventually turned around. Today, there are six Dolcezza locations in D.C., and their pints of gelato can be found in more than 3,000 grocery stores nationwide. Violeta stopped by our studio to chat with host Kerry Diamond about her unlikely path to entrepreneurship. First off, let's define what we mean by Biblical Innocence? Mathew 10:16 “Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” The Greek word “akeraios”, rendered here as “harmless”, may also be rendered as innocent. This verse does not infer ignorance of evil, but rather a rigorous study of Scripture applied to the real world and to one's walk with the Lord. Too many people conflate innocence with naivete. Daniel 6:22 “My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.” Daniel was not “innocent” in the eyes of the law, but in the eyes of God and in common sense. This was also an innocence with knowledge. 2 Corinthians 7:11 “For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.” The word used for clear in the Greek, “hagnos”, means pure, chaste, innocent, or cleared of wrongdoing in a legal sense. Naivete, however, is never looked upon kindly in the Bible. Just read Genesis 3 or Proverbs and we can see what the Bible has to say about the fool, also potentially rendered “the naive”. Some people, with good intentions, believe that we shouldn't talk about issues concerning marital intimacy, let alone the deviations from Godly marital intimacy. We can clearly see however, that the world has created its own narrative about sex and gender, and we can also see the harm it has caused. I am not claiming that these people do not have agency and that the Church is directly responsible for the Pride movement growing in America. However, we've been given the task of being salt and light, restraining influences against decay. Most of us have lived clueless existences in regards to what has been happening in schools and campuses. We are only now seeing the depths of the evil when it shows up in our cities on stages or libraries, flouncing about with immunity from our politicians and police. Nancy Pelosi was recently on Rue Paul's Drag Race, Christina Aguelara pranced about on a pride stage with a 12 inch strapped on appendage flopping about whilst aggressively imitating sexual acts in front of children. These same acts performed on stage, would be prosecuted if done over text, and rightfully so. When we have not filled our children and culture with good ideas about sexuality, the vacuum will be filled by alternatives. We need to start grounding our children in reality so when they are inevitably exposed to the insanity of the world, they can remain innocent. If our children are only naive, and not innocent, but wise, many more will fall to this destructive ideology. So, let us look at some of the facts surrounding the transgender movement, the current tip of the enemy's spear. Studies that claim a relationship between not transitioning and suicide are skewed. One such study published in JAMA Surgery, the people polled claimed up to a 50% reduction in suicidal thoughts in comparison to the last month or year. This claim might make some believe that the results are in and that “transitioning” ultimately helps a significant amount of people. The inverse actually appears to be true if you follow up a decade later. In Sweden, where the trans movement is roughly a quarter century ahead of us, studies have been undertaken to better understand the long term consequences of “transitioning”. “The study identified increased mortality and psychiatric hospitalization compared to the matched controls. The mortality was primarily due to completed suicides (19.1-fold greater than in control Swedes), but death due to neoplasm and cardiovascular disease was increased 2 to 2.5 times as well. We note, mortality from this patient population did not become apparent until after 10 years. The risk for psychiatric hospitalization was 2.8 times greater than in controls even after adjustment for prior psychiatric disease (18 percent). The risk for attempted suicide was greater in male-to-female patients regardless of the gender of the control. Further, we cannot exclude therapeutic interventions as a cause of the observed excess morbidity and mortality. The study, however, was not constructed to assess the impact of gender reassignment surgery per se.” -(Trentacosti 2007, PRO 2009) (Appendices C and D). In the states it has been difficult to do research on this topic because academics who do are often fired or brought into public ruin as in the cases of Dr. Alan Josephson or Dr. Lisa Littman. Stories below. However, the Heritage foundation has attempted to put some of the pieces together with comparing locals that allowed easy access to Transgender Hormones and care to minors: “In the past several years, the suicide rate among those ages 12 to 23 has become significantly higher in states that have a provision that allows minors to receive routine health care without parental consent than in states without such a provision. Before 2010, these two groups of states did not differ in their youth suicide rates. Starting in 2010, when puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones became widely available, elevated suicide rates in states where minors can more easily access those medical interventions became observable. Rather than being protective against suicide, this pattern indicates that easier access by minors to cross-sex medical interventions without parental consent is associated with higher risk of suicide. The Heritage model plotted the difference in a three-year rolling average of suicide rates between states with minor access provisions and states with no such provision. Chart 2 plots the trend in this difference for those ages 12 to 23 who could have been affected by the policy when cross-sex medical interventions became available. For comparison, Chart 2 also shows the trend in this difference for a group ages 28 to 39, who could not have been affected by these policies, since the people in this group would have been at least 18 when puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones became available.” It is important to note, that while this recent trend is new to America, nothing is new under the sun. Rome and Greece fell to this. Israel, for that matter, fell to this. It is critical that we not only repent, but begin shoring up a new foundation of innocence, not naivete, for the next generation of children. This involves talking about sex, gender, and godlessness in a Biblical sense, with grace and thoughtfulness. We need to be aware of what is out there and we need to be a restraining purifying presence in our culture. Innocence is not a naive blindness, but a committed walk with God, ministering truth and grace to a dying culture. Churches need to wake up from their naivete and realize how serious a fight we have ahead of us. We need to have answers, rooted in Scripture, prepared for those who are hurt and suffering as well as those looking for belonging in the LGBT movement. Kink and BDSM were the two things that Myrina and Tristan said were a "hard no" when they entered the lifestyle. Naivete, ignorance, and unfamiliarity with this new world led to a lot of apprehension and fear. So much so, that those were the only things they specifically called attention to in their swinger profiles that they would not explore. Then they met "The Captain". Deciding to open their minds and gently push their boundaries, they agreed to meet a single man who was clearly active in the kink and BDSM realm. Little did they know, meeting The Captain would change their lives and become a pivotal step in their lifestyle journey.
The magic of Summer is upon us stoner Aries. And with the calendar change of season comes the blessing of celestial bodies for the youngest of the stoner Zodiac. All of your wonderful stoner star sign traits will be the engine that drives positivity this month. Naivete, enthusiasm, and even a bit of stubbornness will suit you well in the first Summer month. So pack your stash jar with only your most favorite cannabis strains. Those herbal delights you find most agreeable will be the best medicine for a blessed period. One important aspect of June will be the emotional aperture created by planetary alignment. Don't read into this too much stoner Aries. The emotional floodgates may open you to feeling and understanding the nature and wonderment of the world around you. Toke time to light a spliff, and enjoy the enlightened connection between you and the universe. Your connected cannabis copilot will only enhance the voyage. And yes stoner Aries, your enthusiastic energy will bring you bountiful learned experiences in June. Soak it up! Meditative smoke sessions will be filled with research and knowledgeable quests instead of deep inner digs. The only stress or strain may be found in the final decade of the month. But each stoner Aries will have their individual challenge to face. Just remember my resilient Ram: You are an amazing creature capable of anything you set your mind to. By the end of the month all sacred bowls will be in balance. Perhaps a shared smoke session with a cannabuddy will solidify the magic created, and push positivity into the next period.
If you could have a conversation with yourself back when you started your career in healthcare, what would you say? What does that person need to know in order to sustain their mental health over the arch of their career? Would you talk to them about naivete? Or how to approach one's naivete as it comes up in their career? Consider where you're at today in your career. Would you be willing to talk to yourself about owning your naivete? After 12 years of working in a large hospital setting, in outpatient mental health and substance use disorders clinics, I can admit that I naively behaved and spoke as though I was exempt from the stressors of life, and the stressors on the job. I was naïve to how things would eventually start to breakdown in my personal life. Which they eventually did. Some of the breakdowns were preventable, but my naivete interfered with seeing clearly. I reference the following paper during the podcast: Self-awareness Questions for Effective Psychotherapists: Helping Good Psychotherapists Become Even Better” by Samuel Knapp, Michael Gottlieb and Mitchell Handelsman. The questions they encourage providers to consider to assist in becoming more self-aware: Do I recognize my immediate emotional reactions? Do I judge my competencies accurately? Do I recognize that I might harbor implicit prejudices? Am I aware that I might succumb to cognitive biases or unhelpful heuristics? Am I fully aware of my values? Welcome to the first episode of Collab with Kiva. My journey here hasn't been a straight line and I'm okay with that. Naivete led me to leave politics and launched me on an amazing journey of marriage, motherhood, homeschooling, and searching for the ever-elusive balance. I began to find balance as a jewelry maker on Etsy and as my kids grew older, I found it helping business owners build solid foundations through my work as a Certified Director of Operations and Online Business Manager. As the owner of The 516 Collaborative, I help business owners show up as owners instead of being owned by their businesses. During this episode, I talk about: Lime green interview suits (3:10) Working on Capitol Hill (5:53) Life coming full circle (6:47) Believing in yourself (9:50) Don't lose the little girl inside (11:36) >> Every good team has a playbook. Does yours? Ready to build out your business playbook to not only take things off of your plate but help your business scale? I'm your host Kiva, Slade. From the marbled halls of the US Congress to my racing-themed office chair. I've learned that there is no perfect path to the life of your dreams. My journey over the past 20 years has included being a legislative director for a member of Congress, policy director for a nonprofit, stay-at-home mom, homeschooling mom, jewelry biz owner, and now the owner of a service-based business. Whether your journey has been a straight line, or follow zigs and zags. Join me and my guest as we share insights Pope's and lessons learned from our female entrepreneurship journeys. May the collaborative sharing of our stories be the tide that lifts your boat? Let's dive in. 00:55 Hello, and welcome to the first episode of Collab with Kiva. I am your host, Kiva Slade, and I'm excited. I'm excited that this podcast baby of mine is being launched into the world today. I'm excited that I am seeing the manifestation of a two-year-old dream come to fruition. It is surreal right now. And I am grateful. I am thankful. I am over the moon. And so I'll try to tamp down my excitement just a bit for this episode. But I do want to welcome you as a woman, as a wife as a mom. Yes, my why for this is huge. I've seen life shifts. I recently turned 50. My kids have gone off to college. I am an empty nester. In the midst of that though, I've started on this entrepreneurial journey that has goodness gracious been a journey. Okay. There's a 10-year stint as a product-based business on Etsy and an almost two-year stint as a service-based entrepreneur. And really, sometimes it's hard to be something that you don't see. And I want to share stories not only my own, but those of others, to help inspire and encourage other women to see that there are options. There are people out there who you may resonate with, that you may not actually come across. And I want you to see that and see what's possible for you for your life, for the trajectory that you have placed for yourself in your life. 02:46 Also, let's be honest, there are a lot of people in different spaces that say a lot of different things that make some of us feel like there are the shoulds and there should not there's like a list of them. And you wonder where this treasure trove list is actually hidden. I want you to know that you can feel confident in choosing your own path, whatever that path is. 03:10 So let's talk a bit about me. And how I got here. I can go back to grad school. Okay, I remember it very vividly. It was a very exciting time in my life. I have a Master's in Public Administration. I had some amazing internship opportunities. I worked with people who encouraged me, they pushed me to think bigger than what I was thinking. I was able to do things that quite honestly they said other interns hadn't done. And I was a go-getter. Probably to the point of maybe even ruthless at some points it felt like but we'll have that conversation for another day. After grad school though. I remember my first job interview was with our local government and I was going for a budget management analyst position. I showed up in a lime green interview suit. To this day, I still love that suit. It was this dress with a jacket. And yeah, it was lime green. So I'm that gal, the lime green interview gal. Okay, and one of the ladies who I later worked with said to me just like I could not believe you came to an interview in a lime green suit. And I was just like, but why not? I wanted to stand out and I stood out. And that job was great until there was another new hire. And he was a male. He was a white male. And he received $1,000 more. 04:56 And I know some of you are saying, Kiva $1,000 is not a lot of money. It's not, especially when Uncle Sam takes its share of it. But it was more about the principal, I had more experience. And I asked our deputy director at the time, why? Because you know, when you can wear a lime green suit, you can go ask people the question of why. And he said, Well, he asked for more money. He did? But that's really kind of how I felt. And I said, that was such a game-changing moment for me, not only from the standpoint of Hey, dude, dudette. We need to ask for the things that we want. But also from the standpoint that if you don't ask, people just give you what they think you'll take. And I was like, Oh, my goodness, that's not going to be me. 05:53 So needless to say, I started making connections. And I was considered to be aggressive, assertive, and a ladder climber by my superiors. And I left and went to Capitol Hill. And I worked as a legislative director for a Democratic member of Congress from California. I loved my time on the Hill. But when you start to see behind the curtains and see how the sausage is really made, it really messed with my idealistic mind, I'll be honest, I was naive. I was very naive. And it was a very eye-opening experience for me. And I knew that that was something that I couldn't continue to do. 06:47 Long story short, fast forward, I met a guy, we got married, like within six months of knowing each other. That's a whole episode in and of itself. I'm pregnant. And our daughter had some health challenges. And it's so interesting to me how life can sometimes come full circle because one of my internships in graduate school was with the office, the Governor's Office of Children, Youth, and Families. And that was when brain research and really exploded for zero to three and zero to five-year-olds. And I was like, Oh, my goodness, I want to be a stay-at-home mom until my child is five. At that point, I didn't even have a boyfriend. So it was just a thought. But honestly, when our daughter was sick, and I was like, Okay, I'm literally, I'm home, I'm gonna be home. And it was gonna be home till she was five, because hey, that was what the brain research said. 07:40 Needless to say, that didn't happen. I wound up homeschooling both of our children, our son who came later, all the way to high school, and then they graduated high school. So, you know, as a mom, though, you're always doing all the things to support the kids to support your family. So there were co-ops, there was speech and debate. I was a state representative, like all of the things because there was always that level of involvement in I'm a constant learner. So I was always figuring out ways to help I was the most techie. So it's like, Hey, you're in here and the tabulation room to calculate all the things and fix the things that don't go right. 08:20 And along that journey, though, I really felt that I was missing something. Something was just not right. I didn't feel like I had a balance. And I took a jewelry-making course from a local Etsy shop owner, and it was her and her mom. And I took a course and we, we melted silver, and we hammered things and playing with flames and tools was so exciting. And that's what started my jewelry business. It was always still secondary though, to my life as a wife and a mom. But it was fulfilling that need for me for something that just really felt like I needed a bit more balance. 09:02 So I share all that to say that your journey doesn't have to be a straight path. I know the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. However, your line may look a little different. Like mine, it may have some zigs, some zags, it might stop moving, it feels like at some point, like the pencil is just at a pause point. You know, and then it starts to move again. The big thing here that I want you to know is that it's your line. It's your line to draw as you choose. It may have loops, it may have circles, it may have squiggly lines. It may have points where the pencils just digging into the paper, almost to the point of tearing a hole. 09:50 Whatever it is, I want you to know it's yours. And you can choose how it is drawn, how it continues, you can take a point and look back and see what it looks like. And if you want to continue that way or a different way, you know, as someone who's always been a big thinker, my parents have always inspired me to say, hey, like, there's nothing you can't do. Now, let's be honest, there are some things that I probably cannot do. I don't know what they are yet. I remember one time, my dad knew how to sew, like my mom could sew too. But my dad was like this amazing sew. And I was like, oh, I need a dress to wear to my cousin's wedding. I can sew this, I literally did not use a pattern. I used a slip that I had from Victoria's Secrets because I like the shape of it. And I made my own pattern for this dress. The point I'm neglecting to tell you is that I had this idea on a Saturday morning. The wedding was Saturday afternoon. So I went to Cloth World grew up in New Jersey, there was a big Cloth World long before Joanne's. I picked out the fabric and got everything. I had this whole dress made except for the zipper. It's like, dad, I need help with a zipper. And, like literally, I wore the dress to the wedding received a ton of compliments. And that's what happens. Sometimes it's women who were big thinkers. You know, like, hey, let's do a dress in the morning. Why not? You know, why not? becomes that question that we should always ask ourselves, why not? 11:36 Don't lose the little girl who was inside of you. She was a big dreamer. She was probably a bold thinker. She wears lime green suits to interviews, okay. It's not too late to pursue those dreams, to go after them with a fervent passion that can only come from the wisdom that you have now gained. And why not? So when you tune in to this podcast, there'll be times that you hear guests. And the goal is always to inspire you, to encourage you to have yourself ask but why not? Why not? Why not? 12:23 So as you go forward in your day, and you come to those points where you feel like, I don't know if I can do that. I want you to ask yourself, why not? Because I know that you can. And I think that the little girl inside of you, she knows that you can as well. Thanks for tuning in. I look forward to sharing more with you as we journey together on Collab with Kiva. 12:51 Thanks for tuning in to this episode of Collab with Kiva. Dr. Fauci is out doing damage control in the wake of his e-mails being made public, and the American mainstream corporate media is helping carry the water for him. But the fact remains, his intense ignorance of the evils of communism and naivete toward the Chinese government put America in peril with the funding of Wuhan's virology laboratory.
As an eager young woman, Pam, traveled the world in the 1970's solo. Naivete can bring crazy adventures, which is what she found accidentally travelling through civil wars in Africa and being trapped in the Middle East.

The Democrats and their media enablers plainly believe that wealth just happens, that it once again exists to be taken. What else could explain the childish economic narrative created by Biden’s aides, and reported in unquestioning fashion by rather gullible reporters?

In the book, you will learn most people have beautiful dreams deep inside—the things they would like to have, the relationships they’d love to enjoy, and the wellness and well-being that would help them express their best, in every way. However, often those dreams lie buried inside us. Hidden by fear or unworthiness or a lack of awareness of what could be. *DISCLAIMER: We recorded this podcast on March 11, which was just before it became abundantly clear to us that COVID-19 was not just on our doorstep, it was in our figurative yard, and in our figurative garage. Therefore you will hear us (and in particular, Caitlin) continue to question the contagion, the responses, the leading edge worriers, and overall what we should have been doing. Rest assured listeners, we have since done a 180 degree shift and are aggressively social distancing. Enjoy our naivete and blissful unawareness about what was about to hit us. Know that we have changed, that it’s ok to change your mind and do better. Please: STAY HOME. Caitlin talks about a recent hard night she had with both boys, and how she’s begun snoring. We taped this conversation on Sept 29th, 2018. The intro music is by Dave Weckl called "Just Groove Me" The segue music on this episode is "The Living Years" by Mike and the Mechanics. Thanks for listening and be a Yes-Sayer to what is. http://www.thelastletter.com/ https://www.meaningfulrelations.com/ https://www.instagram.com/inspirevulnerability/ Andy Chaleff is a private mentor and advisor to a handful of high-profile business leaders. He has been behind the scenes of many of the disruptions in mindfulness and education today. eMindful, InnerExplorer, SOLE and The Cleveland Municipality School District are just a few of the clients that he has helped guide to success. His approach is unconventional. He lives with clients for a week at a time and touches all aspects of their lives, from child rearing to office intrigue, childhood trauma to facing death. His clients see him less as a business coach and more as a guide and partner in a lifelong journey.Andy’s work is a byproduct of his own life story. He left the U.S. at age twenty to escape the sadness of his mother’s death, traveling the world. After backpacking for years, he finally set roots in Austria, where he helped to take an IT company public in 1997. He has visited over sixty countries and lived in seven of them around the world. In spite of his business success, Andy felt empty inside. In 2005 he sold everything he owned to embark on a radical life do-over. After experiencing profound inner transformation, he founded a coaching business with his dear friend and mentor, Cees de Bruin. Their company, Meaningful Relations, helped thousands of people in more than twenty countries.Andy is a walking paradox. He is as loving as he is provocative, and his mentoring style is equal parts unsettling and comforting, irreverent and compassionate. His mother affectionately called him, “My little shit-stirrer.”Andy founded the non-profit, The Last Letter, which goes by the same name as the book that he published, inviting individuals to share their feelings in letters to loved ones. His life's work is helping people connect with themselves and others through vulnerability and self-awareness. He helps people transform their most feared and painful emotions into their greatest source of motivation and connection. When he is not consulting clients, he serves as the Director at Amsterdam’s Welvaren Training Center. He enjoys Amsterdam and bores people with the history of the city whenever he has the chance. Andy lives between Amsterdam and London, with a few months of the year spent in the US. My conversation with Andy made me think of two movies, both of which illustrate the beauty of naivete. Naivete is an ignorance of norms of some kind--cultural, social, religious, political, logical, etc. Naivete can be bad or good for us depending on that which we're ignoring AND the amount of agency that is intact while acting on our ignorances. In other words, whether they are chosen by us, or we've fallen prey to them. Andy is the former. He's fully aware of how the world works, the norms of culture, society, logic, etc. And has seemingly chosen to transcend them and live his own life, follow his own gut, march to his own drum. In this sense it can't really be called naivete, can it. So for lack of a better word, I call it Zen. He walks 6 inches off the ground the rest of walk on. Now I know some woo-woo people who think they don't live by the same natural laws that the rest of us do, but that can be self-delusional. But Andy's practice walks right along the edge of that cliff without going over. As an ex-Christian, I cringe at how naive I was to believe as literally as I did. To be a fundamentalist Christian, one must check their skepticism at the door. So in a way, it is willful naivete but not coming from within, but pressures from without--peer pressure, everyone's doing it, the fear of Hell, the desire to please God and people, etc. So still no agency. One of the movies is called Enchanted, with Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey. It's about a young maiden named Gisele who lives in a land called Andalasia--a beautiful place, displayed in cartoon animation, reminiscent of Disney fairy tale films. Andalasia is a fantasy world with a lot less trouble or problems than the real world, and as a result, emotions such as anger and frustration are rarely experienced by its inhabitants. Gisele is cast into the real world by an evil witch and we, the viewers, are transported into live action filming. The beauty for me is Gisele doesn't let the real world bring her down the cynical pessimism that is prevalent. She stays naive and it's refreshing to see. In this clip, she believes a prince charming character is coming to get her because a squirrel told her. Dempsey's character, a real human, tries to talk sense into her. Here he models a healthy skepticism by our standards, but in this metaphor she calls him out for being a no-sayer. An argument ensues and Gisele experiences anger for the first time and it feels good. My guest today, Andy, grew up thinking anger was bad because his dad was a rager. He suppressed his own anger in fear that he would become like his father. As a part of his therapy, he learned to be honest with his feelings and his body and no be ashamed of being human. Gisele is not ashamed of being naive. In fact she chooses it, like Andy. That being said (and spoiler alert), she ends up staying a human, letter her cartoon prince return to Andalasia, and falls in love with Dempsey. Because in the spirit of the dialectic, they were both right--his realism and her willful naivete. The second movie is The Man Who Knew Too Little with my hero, Bill Murray. Murray is a naive Blockbuster Video clerk, named Wallace Ritchie, who travels from Des Moines, Iowa, to London to celebrate his birthday with his wealthy younger brother, James. When Wallace turns up on the same night that James has plans to attend a high-profile client dinner party where he hopes to bring in millions from a German investment firm, James needs to keep Wallace away during the evening, so he gives Wallace a ticket to the participatory Theater of Life. The theater game requires Wallace to assume a character and interact with actors portraying people in dramatic situations. At the corner phone booth, where the game is to begin with instructions of his mission, should he choose to take it, an actual call intended for an actual assassin rings first, unbeknownst to the producers of the show and Wallace, and he's now a part of a scheme to kill some key figures and revive the Cold War. Wallace leaves the phone booth to begin his mission--oblivious to its criminal intent, and the real assassin gets the call from the Theater of Life. Blissfully unaware, Wallace walks without fear into a complex web of intrigue involving defense ministers, call girls, and Russian hitmen. For Wallace, all the world's a stage, and he's amazed at the skill of the actors, while his pursuers are mystified by their adversary's fearlessness in the face of threats, torture and bullets. In this clip, Wallace, played by Murray, (did I mention that?) has started his quest, thinking he's being filmed for the show, The Theater of Life, when he's approached by two actual hooligans wielding real knives. So, perhaps you can see how these two movies demonstrate a way, albeit fictional and metaphorical, for us in the real world to take everything less serious, especially ourselves. Andy got so depressed after his mother died that he wanted to die. Instead of killing himself, he killed the anxious, depressed, fearful Andy and resurrected as the fearless, transcendent Andy you're about to meet. I need people to model for me those characteristics I truly aspire to be--caged up within me, afraid to emerge. Gisele, Wallace, Bill Murray himself, and Andy Chaleff are examples that encourage, enable and empower me to step into a more authentic version of myself--fearless, naive, and yes-sayers.
I will be teaching on WITCHCRAFT, OCCULTISM, HYPNOTISM, INTELLECTUALISM, HUMANISM and HOW YOU CAN WALK IN CONSTANT VICTORY OVER THEM. Are you yearning for FRESHNESS in your relationship with God? Are you ready to walk practically in victory? Do you want to learn how to exercise your spiritual authority constantly? THEN LISTEN TO THIS MESSAGE. It is naivete to conclude that everything you see is all there is to see. If you can believe in INFRARED, BLUETOOTH and MICROWAVE technologies, then you shouldn't struggle to establish the veracity of this: There are forces and factors beyond the detection of our natural senses that can alter the state of the things we see, smell, taste and touch. More than ever, seek to sharpen your spiritual intelligence. Ignorance often precedes victimization. Naivete is the forerunner of exploitation. In parties, some people are drugged and then exploited. In life, some people also have their spiritual senses dulled, before they're exploited. Stay spiritually sharp. Remember, both a DRUNK DRIVER and a SLEEPY ONE are exposed to the same risk- the risk of an accident. Could this be your wake-up call?
There is a thin line between having hope & being naive, & its not always easy to realize when you're crossing it. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/she-copes/message
Netflix’s half-hour dramedy Everything Sucks! is woke nostalgia. The series overlays post-millennial sensibilities about race, sexuality and storytelling onto a 1990s world of rotary phones and mail-order CDs. It’s goofy enough to name a kid Scott Pocket, and earnest enough to stage an impromptu death-by-corn dog performance of Uncle Vanya in the cafeteria. The result is a warm, thoughtful take on coming of age in the ’90s.

Naivete can persuade you to try for the seemingly impossible. If you follow this up with education and hard work--sometimes the impossible becomes a successful startup. “People like genuine people. People like people who are authentic, people lke people who show up with their true identity. And being Chickasaw is part of who I am.”-Heath Clayton One of the areas in which I love to dabble is what I call “life system hacking.” The basic idea is finding ways to create a life, circumvent expectations or bypass the norms of which we all are led to believe cannot be bypassed or circumvented. There are a lot of people who write about the subject online, and it can get a bit of a reputation as self-help like content. But I continue to expose myself to it because I think there are gems that can be found, if you know what you are looking for. I was excited to interview someone I think hacked the system quite successfully. That person is Heath Clayton (Chicksaw). Heath earned a Bachelor’s degree for about $3,000 without stepping foot onto a university campus. After “college” he worked in the White House at age 21. Not after 21 years of working in politics. At 21 years old. After home school and then earning a bachelor’s degree without going to college, he earned a Master’s from Carnegie Mellon University Heinz School of Public Policy. Oh, he also achieved a goal of visiting 100 countries by the time he turned 30. Now he is working to give back to other young Native people with the goal of showing them that much more is possible than they may realize. He’s mentored 40-50 people by his estimate. It’s a story that you need to hear. It’s a good reminder that there are amazing resources out there to utilize, and there are amazing people that will help you along the way. Have a listen. -- Heath's bio When he is not busy working in corporate philanthropy for a consulting firm, Heath Clayton is usually visiting a new country to feed his insatiable curiosity of the world. He spent the last few years working towards a goal of visiting 100 countries before his 30th birthday, a goal he achieved in January 2017. Heath is Chickasaw Indian and attended Carnegie Mellon University for graduate school on a tribal affairs fellowship. Heath previously worked in The White House under the George W. Bush Administration and on Capitol Hill before beginning his consulting career. Mentoring native youth on potential careers in corporate America or public policy excites him, and he is always looking for ways to stay in engaged with his tribe and Indian country. -- Some random links mentioned in this episode: Code 2040 Interview with Laura Weidman from Code2040 on Recode/Decode Native American Political Leadership Program Resources from Carnegie Mellon FEMA College Courses
President Trump honors the 250th birthday of Andrew Jackson. We consider parallels between the patriotic, pro-democracy, anti-elitist Jackson and our current American president. Why did Jackson's rival John Quincy Adams regard the American people as incapable of self-governance? Have today's Ruling Classes abrogated their charge for "responsible" leadership? Meanwhile, President Trump's proposed budget takes steps towards "draining the swamp" in Washington -- and some Republicans, including Peggy Noonan, appear uncomfortable at the prospect. While an enthused James Bovard sees "a wholesale demolition of boondoggles" in Trump's budget cuts, Reagan's former speechwriter sees a mere lack of "prudence." Naivete? Also, John McCain trivializes his Russian obsessions by accusing fellow Senator Rand Paul of "working for Vladimir Putin." We listen to Rand Paul's response, describing McCain as "unhinged" and "past his prime." Why does McCain care more about the borders of distant Montenegro than about the borders of his own home state of Arizona? America Last? Plus, we review the Left's reflexive hostility towards Western Civilization and note Bill Maher's preference for the United Nations over the United States. Audio File: Download MP3Transcript: An Interview with Bettina Hein Founder and CEO, Pixability Date: March 7, 2011 NCWIT Entrepreneurial Heroes: Interview with Bettina Hein [music] Kennedy: Hi, this is Lee Kennedy, board member for the National Center for Women in Information Technology, or NCWIT. I am also CEO of Bolder Search. This is part of a series of interviews that we are having with fabulous entrepreneurs, women who have started IT companies in a variety of sectors, all of whom just have terrific stories to tell us about being entrepreneurs. With me is Larry Nelson from w3w3.com. Hi Larry. Larry Nelson: Oh, hi. I am really excited to be here. Once again, this is going to be a fantastic interview with a number of high powered women who have really been examples of super entrepreneurship. Lee: Wonderful. You want to tell us just a little bit about w3w3. Larry: Well, we have been doing it for 12 years. We are an Internet‑based business radio show. We host everything and archive everything. We have over 17,000 pages on our website and they are all business interviews. We are excited about that. Lee: Wonderful. Well, today we are interviewing Bettina Hein who is the founder and CEO of Pixability. Pixability helps small and medium sized businesses increase sales by using video. Bettina is a repeat entrepreneur based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Prior to Pixability, Bettina cofounded Swiss based SVOX AG in 2001 and led the venture‑backed speech software company to profitability. Then in 1996, Patina was the initiator of START, an organization that advances entrepreneurship among college students. She is also the founder of SheEOs, and that's a network for female CEOs and founders of growth companies. So Bettina, welcome. Bettina Hein: Thank you very much for having me. Lee: Well, we'd love to hear a little bit about Pixability before we jump into some questions we have for you. Bettina: Well, you said it correctly. We help companies and non‑profits create and promote themselves via online video. We help you create a great video by for example sending you a flip camera and you shoot the video. We spruce it up and then we have software that publishes that video all over the Internet and search engine optimizes. We are really the experts for video marketing. Lee: Wonderful. Larry: Oh I love it. Lee: We are just going to jump into things here. We'd love to hear how you first got into technology. Bettina: I've been in tech all of my career. I guess it started a little bit earlier than that. I started with computers and programming in Logo when I was in fourth grade on an Apple IIe way back when I went to college for business administration and did finance. But I was always in love with technology and would spend lots of time with all the guys in the windowless rooms with the computers. When I got out of grad school, I had offers from investment banks and consultancies and all of that. But I really wanted to be in tech. I took my fourth grade book where I had written down these Logo programs, written them out, so I took them to talk with the founders of tech companies. I became involved in SVOX my first company which is a speech technology software company based in Zurich, Switzerland and became a cofounder there. I've been in tech and an entrepreneur all of my career, basically straight out of grad school. Lee: Well, and the other question I had is what today you think is really cool, what technologies do you just love to play with? Bettina: Well, you should really play with Google Translate because that has my SVOX [indecipherable 00:03:56] and the company SVOX's technology. There is a speech technology that is pretty cool. But apart from that, the obvious thing video. There is a lot of things happening around video and into active video and video on mobile phones. That ties in with all the things that are happening in the mobile space. I really think that there are lots of things happening that are relevant for businesses in mobile and that again ties in to the social web, social media. As a geek on the side I am also really interested in things like Amazon's Mechanical Turk, because that sort of shows the human computing interface. Probably you saw what was on Jeopardy last week was IBM's Watson. I am really fascinated on how humans and AI that interface there. But that's something that's a little bit further out for commercialization, actually. Larry: With your experiences now, what is it about entrepreneurship that makes you tick, and why did you become an entrepreneur. Bettina: I didn't know any better. All of my four grandparents are actually entrepreneurs. My grandmothers as well as my grandfathers were entrepreneurs in their own right, and my parents as well. They are professionals and nobody in my family ever had a nine‑to‑five job. I didn't really know what that meant. I heard that you have this career thing and you go to an office and you come back at night. But I never experienced that from home. I didn't really know what that meant. For me it didn't seem like a far reach to become an entrepreneur. Also, I love creating something from nothing. It's really so wonderful if you do it with an organization or if you do it with a company, that you have this idea in your head that you want to create something that helps fosters entrepreneurship in college students. What I did was START. Or you want to make speech technology an everyday then people use, and you have this idea and you work really, really hard. It's extremely hard, but it comes alive when you create all these jobs. My last company has over 120 people. My husband is also an entrepreneur. Together we have created over 500 jobs. I am really, really proud that I figured out by hard work how to take something and turn it into an entity that provides a livelihood for so many people. Lee: Boy, that's so cool. This question is a lead on to that. Who influenced you or supported you to take the career path you have? Do you have any role models or mentors? Bettina: Well, my family, definitely. My grandfather grew a company. He was a coal miner and when he was 15 he went into the coal mine and was under the earth. It was a really back breaking hard job. Over the years, he found ways to make money in other ways. He ended up having a wholesale Coop providing hundreds of millions of tons coal to the big energy producers, electricity producers. He was retired by then, but he would always tell me how he did that. How he used his knowledge, when he was 15, to do all of that. He would do math problems with me on this and tell me about how he negotiated across the table and that he always was really faster in his head. They couldn't pull out a calculator as fast as he could do the math, so we would work on that. Up to about five years ago, I had mostly male mentors because I haven't seen any women doing what I was doing. As a female entrepreneur in technology, in Europe there were hardly anybody to look up to. But then I moved from Zurich, Switzerland to here to Cambridge Massachusetts. I found that well there are these people I can look up to that can be a mentor. You interviewed Gail Goodman the founder of Constant Contact, or the founder of the Zipcar, Robin Chase. People like Beth Marcus who sold her fifth company. People have done this here before. I now feel like I am living in Disneyland in a way because I have so many people that support me. I am trying to give it back with SheEOs group that I created to foster more female entrepreneurship. Larry: That's terrific. By the way Lucy Sanders always likes us to ask this tough question. What is the toughest thing that you had to do in your career? Bettina: So I started my first company when I was 27. This was in 2001. So it was post dotcom boom. But there was still money around and a little bit of hype around. But that very quickly evaporated. But, we were able to raise money and we hired people and that was going pretty well. Then we just did not make any of our goals. It was terrible because I, the young person, had promised the world to all these people. We hired over 20 people. I had to fire half of them at a certain point, together with my co‑founders. That was really, really, really hard to do that. In Europe, it's also harder to fire people. You don't fire them and they leave that day. You have to keep them on for three months. You have to continue to paying their salaries so, that was really, really hard. It made me very prudent about over hiring and making sure I meet my goals before I promise people too much. Lee: Yeah, I think we've heard from a good majority of the people we have interviewed that having to lay off people or fire people is not easy. Larry: Yeah, Bettina, you're absolutely right about in Europe. My wife and I have owned a number of companies in Europe. We had some of those similar experiences. Bettina: Yeah, you have to look people in the eye for three months and say, "I failed you." Every single day they look at you while they're searching for new jobs, but they still work for you. I didn't feel so hot. Lee: If you were to think back of all the things you learned through growing businesses and having the networking, the CEO, what would you advise a young person about entrepreneurship if they were sitting with you there today? Bettina: That's one of the things I really love doing. I really love helping other people make their dreams come true. I typically tell them anybody can be an entrepreneur. I tell them that "You can do it." There are three things I tell them that they need. The first one is naivete. If you knew what was going to hit you during the course of building your company, you would not start. [laughter] Larry: You're right. Bettina: You should really, really start young and go at it. That doesn't mean to be unprepared, right? That means, you have to do your research. You have to look for a good market. But, if you knew too much, you would not be able to be an innovator. Naivete is the first thing. The second thing I tell them they need to have is chutzpah. Do you guys know what that means? Lee: Yes. Larry: Yeah, we do, but why don't you explain it to our listeners. [laughter] Bettina: Yeah. I always usually ask them. It means being audacious, putting yourself out there. You really have to own it and say, "Yes, I am convinced I can do this and I can solve your problem." Let me give you an example. When we started SVOX, we were a small company, but we had the chutzpah to go to Mercedes Benz and say, "We have the solution for your flagship product, the S Class and we want it." We didn't know at the time how we'd be able to deliver. I mean, we had a plan, but we couldn't the next day have delivered. But, they gave us an order for this, and that made the company. Chutzpah means putting yourself out there. It doesn't mean winging it. You have to do your homework and be prepared to deliver. But, you have to also say, "I know I can do this for you. Trust me on this." Then the third thing is perseverance. You have to have the willpower to see it through. Because It's hard. It's very hard and you're going to want to quit. Often. You have to see it through. But, that doesn't mean being stubborn. You do have to take cues from your environment and pivot and change your business model and evolve it. Just as I said my toughest experience was firing all those people. Well we didn't give up. We laid off all those people because we said, "OK, with the cash that we have and where we need to go, this is how we can get to growing the company." Since then, the company has grown more than 10X. But, we knew we had to see this through. If you have those three things, I think any young person can make it in an entrepreneurship. Larry: Wow. You have hit on a number of different things that you've done, and so on, but let me just see if we can narrow this down. What are personal characteristics that have given you the advantage of being an entrepreneur? Bettina: Well, first of all as I said before that not know any better, the family background, definitely. Also, if you statically look at it, what makes people more inclined to be entrepreneurs, is if they have role models in their family to do that. But, just personally, I have a dogged determination to succeed, to make things happen. I think that's really the most important thing that people say to me. I feel that motivates the people that I find to work for me most is that people can serve me all kinds of punches and I will get back up, get back on the horse and just continue on. Obviously, that's my strategy and learning from those punches, but I will do that. I think my team also [indecipherable 00:14:46] the energy through hard times to keep going. Lee: With all the startups and things that you've done, how do you bring balance into your life, between personal and professional? Bettina: It all melds into one, in a way. I just don't believe in this myth that you can completely separate your personal and your professional life. I think that's just not true. I do think that you have to have some little bit of distance. I try not to work on Saturdays. That's what I try not to do. I also advocate that people take time off and I do that myself. It's very hard to do that, but being from Europe, a lot of vacation there is mandated by law. What I always try to train everybody in the company to tag team it. We're experimenting this year with a vacation policy that says you get two weeks off a year, or you get four weeks off a year, if you take two weeks at a time. You have your pick. You can either get four weeks, or two weeks. But, of you want to take off time, don't piecemeal it a day here or a day here. You have to take two weeks off. The reason for that is, that I want people to do their jobs and document them so well that other people can take over their jobs for two weeks while they're gone and they don't have to worry. I try to do that with myself. I really try not to be a bottleneck for decisions or for things that are happening in the company. For me, I think, it's very hard to do. But, I am really working hard on it. Right now, I am getting ready to have my first baby so I am really working very hard in order to be able to take four weeks off of maternity leave and trying to get everybody transferring enough responsibility so I can go do that. It's a big challenge, but I absolutely believe if you fail at that, then your company will collapse like a house of cards if you leave. That means you didn't build a good organization. Larry: Bettina, you're right on. My wife and I, who are in business together, we have five kids, so we have some empathy for what you're talking about. Bettina: I'm glad, yes. It's going to be a challenge. I know that. Larry: Besides your new baby, you've already achieved a great deal. What's next for you? Bettina: Well, I think there's lots more out there. I think I am 10 years into my apprenticeship of being an entrepreneur. I think I'm constantly learning. I do have a dream of taking a company public one of these days, like Gail did with Constant Contact. Pixability we often sell ourselves to investors as, "What Constant Contact did for email marketing we're going do for video marketing." But, maybe being public these days isn't the most attractive thing anymore, but I do want to grow a company in a substantial way and into the thousands of employees. That's my dream that's still out there. Larry: I have a feeling you're going to do it too. Lee: That is a wonderful dream. Bettina: Thank you for that confidence. Lee: We thank you for interviewing with us today. For everybody out there listening, you can find these podcasts on W3W3.com and as well at ncwit.org. Please pass it along to a friend. Old Peachtree Presbyterian Church is a member of the PCA and is located in Duluth, Ga. Part of a sermon series on the book of Jeremiah. A leader's gullibility causes Judah to be plunged back into chaos.
The season of Advent is all about finding the spirit of the child within. Philosopher Paul Ricouer coined the phrase "second naivete" to describe the religious faith we can develop after we have passed through the critical dismissal of literal beliefs.
