There is one thing that connects the disparate generations of Americans: books. This episode of the Velshi Banned Book Club will look at two novels that don't just capture the spirit of growing up but punctuate chapters in an American student's life: “Bridge to Terabithia” by Katherine Paterson and “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky. These books are frequently assigned in English classrooms across the county, and if they're not, they're passed from friend to friend. They are rites of passage in their own right. These books don't share plot, characters, or scenery, but they both prove how serious childhood is, how painful growing up can be, and just how "adult" a topic a young person can handle.
In this episode we chat with Christa Barfield, founder of FarmerJawn, a Philadelphia based farm focused on reintroducing farming into the lifestyles of underserved communities. Farmerjawn is the largest black-woman owned regenerative organic produce farm in the United States and hosts a variety of educational programs and experiences that bring healthy food and nature back into the lives of urban people. In this wide-ranging conversation we discuss the stigmatized relationship that many black & brown people have with the land and how to fix it, the power of amplifying one's voice to spread a message, how we can make healthy local food more accessible and convenient for urban people, and how agriculture is equally a part of all our lineages. Some schoolboards in the country are banning this iconic Newberry-award-winning children's novel on charges that it deals with death and glorifies foul language and witchcraft. Ever felt overshadowed by a sibling or struggled to find your own identity? Katherine Paterson's "Jacob Have I Loved" brings these raw emotions to the surface, and we're peeling back the layers. Join us as we navigate Sarah Louise's turbulent journey, from her envy-ridden youth on the Chesapeake Bay to her quest for self-recognition as a nurse midwife (or alternatively, her journey from maybe a 5 in Maryland to a 10 in a small Appalachian Mountains town). Our conversation takes some unexpected turns as we tackle themes like teenage crushes, emotional abuse, and the generational dynamics that steer Sarah Louise's path. We get hung up on the romantic relationships in this book and Hannah reveals she has a very forgiving nature. In this exploration of "Jacob Have I Loved," we promise a journey through the complex waters of sibling rivalry, with a touch of humor and a crab-related quiz to boot (because Chesapeake Bay, duh!).These Books Made Me is a podcast about the literary heroines who shaped us and is a product of the Prince George's County Memorial Library System podcast network. Katherine Paterson is a singer/songwriter based in McKinney, TX. She writes indie-folk music to keep you company. Her debut album, Wake, is available on all streaming platforms. Paterson started writing songs as gifts. She wrote one of her first songs from the journal entries of a cross-country road trip with a friend. Out of this song grew a passion for writing songs for far-flung companions. This transformed into writing songs as companions for all kinds of life moments. After moving to Dallas in 2020, Paterson began performing solo and with her bands Doggerland and very good friends. Paterson released her debut album, Wake, on January 14, 2024. The album lives in the complexity of feeling love, loss, joy, and grief all at the same time. Described as "quite the folksy feat," track four on the album, "Bloom," ventures through reconciliation and arrives at a celebration of how we got where we are. Katherine Paterson is one of America's most celebrated writers for children. The author of more than 40 books, she is one of just six writers who have twice won the prestigious Newbery Medal, for “Bridge to Terabithia” in 1978 and “Jacob Have I Loved” in 1981. She has also won the National Book Award twice. In 2000, Paterson was named a Living Legend by the Library of Congress.Paterson frequently writes about children confronting difficult issues. At 89 years old, the Vermont author shows little sign of slowing down. She recently published a new book, “Birdie's Bargain,” about a child with a parent heading off to fight in Iraq.Paterson's books are among the most beloved in children's literature. They are also among the most banned. Book banning has lately been enjoying a revival, as books are being pulled from library shelves in “unprecedented” numbers, according to the American Library Association. Among the latest crop of books to be yanked from library shelves are “Maus,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel about the Holocaust by Art Spiegelman; “Beloved,” by Toni Morrison; and “The 1619 Project,” a bestselling history of slavery in the U.S. that grew out of a special issue of The New York Times Magazine.“Bridge to Terabithia” rose to No. 8 on the American Library Association's list of the 100 most frequently challenged books for the 1990s. Her book “The Great Gilly Hopkins” was No. 20 on that list. Only a handful of authors had their books banned more often in the 1990s, including Maya Angelou, Mark Twain and John Steinbeck.“If you write a book that has any power in it, it has the power to offend,” Paterson said. “I don't want to write a book that has no power in it, so I have to run the risk of offending.”
"We're running fast on streets with cracks in 'em." How do you grow older gracefully? Can you preserve a bit of childhood as adulthood looms? Can you ever run with childlike abandon as an adult? Does progress always come at a cost?In "Ms. Clavel," the thoughtful waltz from her new album, Wake, singer-songwriter Katherine Paterson poses these questions and more through the lens of a friendly childhood figure. Using literary allusions to Madeline, a scalar piano line that skips like water over stones, and the repetition of a familiar line--"That's all there is; there isn't anymore"--Katherine evokes the passing of time with a melodic simplicity that would make Joni Mitchell proud. In this episode, Emmeline and Katherine chat about growing older, holding space for sadness, how one marks the passing of time, and the challenge of painting portraits of the people we become when we're not looking (to borrow a phrase from Elaine Castillo). They also talk about their mutual love for Sondheim and the healing power of music. For more information about Katherine Paterson, or to follow her musical journey, visit her official website. You can also pre-save Wake on Spotify.

There is a relationship between grief and transcendence that may not be immediately recognizable. But it's one often expressed within art and in particular, children's literature. Whether it's Lewis's wardrobe to Narnia, Dorothy's house transported by cyclone to Oz or a bridge to Terabithia built across a chasm of loss. Grief has a way of transporting us to a fantastical world of imagination where we can more easily grapple with the difficulties of loss and even find closure to the trauma that sent us looking for relief. In this episode, Makers & Mystics host Stephen Roach talks with children's book author Katherine Paterson about the motivations behind her writing and why she feels it is important to create a safe space through art and literature for young adults to work through difficult emotions and experiences. Katherine Paterson is the author of more than 40 books, including 18 novels for children and young people. She has twice won the Newbery Medal, for Bridge to Terabithia in 1978 and Jacob Have I Loved in 1981. When we are writing to move someone to action, we must be clear. Not clever. Only crystal clear will do. I recently attended the Hope Words conference for writers, where one of the speakers was Katherine Paterson. Mrs. Paterson is the author of over 40 books and the recipient of many awards for her writing, including two Newberry Medals. She told us about a time when she got a note from her long-time editor about a certain paragraph. She had taken great care with this paragraph and she held it dear. The editor's note said, “It's beautiful, Katherine, but what does it mean?”As a writer, I feel the pain of having something I've labored over being misunderstood or torn apart. As an editor, I know it's a question that must be asked. All our beautiful writing and storytelling is worthless if it isn't clear. To be clear in our nonprofit writing, we must answer three key questions:What is happening? What does it mean? What do you want me to do about it?By answering these questions, you can provide context for your message and make it clear what action you want your readers to take.Support the show

"Now that the peas have grown tall, and they don't reach the land of giants..." Disappointment. Gratitude. Loss. Grief. Joy. Pride. Hope.We humans are complex, messy creatures, and all of these feelings can co-exist in us. In "Bloom," the mandolin-driven title track from her debut EP, singer-songwriter Katherine Paterson seeks to give voice to all of these warring emotions in a sparse, stark Americana jam that ends in a celtic barn dance. In this episode, Emmeline sits down with Katherine to talk about how disappointing relationships can still help us grow and why it's so important to give ourselves space and permission as creatives. Katherine shares the story of a powerful creative retreat, confesses her love for gardening, and discusses her enthusiasm for stringed instruments. Katherine Paterson’s “Bridge to Terabithia” has the unfortunate legacy of being the book everyone thinks of as the Death By Newbery trope-namer. But, it’s a much more gentle, subtle and compassionate book than people give it credit for, written by a woman processing her and her child’s grief and giving children the gift of an […]
How do you help a kid that feels alone? How do you help a kid when he loses his best friend in a tragic death? These were questions that Katherine Paterson had with her son in 1977, inspiring her to write the classic novel, The Bridge to Terabithia. The movie is a bit uneven, but it has something important to say.

Samantha reviews the dark comedy Why Women Kill, Indy re-reads some of his childhood favourites like; The Phantom Tollbooth, Maniac Magee, & Bridge to Terabithia, then we prepare to finish of the Step up series with the Chinese film Step Up: Year of the Dance, AKA Step Up China! Plus ice cream cone laws, keeping secrets, sweet sweet crime, Nova reruns, Animal Planet, Samantha's murder plans, & more! Why Women Kill is an American dark comedy-drama anthology television series created by Marc Cherry. Set in multiple time periods, the series depicts the events leading to deaths caused by women. It premiered on August 15, 2019, on CBS All Access and its first season consists of 10 episodes.[1] The second season premiered on June 3, 2021, on Paramount+.[2] In December 2021, the series was renewed for a third season. The Phantom Tollbooth is a children's fantasy adventure novel written by Norton Juster, with illustrations by Jules Feiffer, first published in 1961. The story follows a bored young boy named Milo who unexpectedly receives a magic tollbooth that transports him to the once prosperous, but now troubled, Kingdom of Wisdom. Maniac Magee is a novel written by American author Jerry Spinelli and published in 1990 Exploring themes of racism and inequality, it follows the story of an orphan boy looking for a home in the fictional town of Two Mills. Bridge to Terabithia is a novel written by Katherine Paterson, about two children named Leslie and Jesse who create a magical forest kingdom in their imaginations. The book was originally published in 1977 by Thomas Crowell, and in 1978, it won the Newbery Medal.
Katherine Paterson is one of America's most celebrated writers for children. The author of more than 40 books, she is one of just six writers who have twice won the prestigious Newbery Medal, for Bridge to Terabithia in 1978 and Jacob Have I Loved in 1981. She has also won the National Book Award twice. In 2000, Paterson was named a Living Legend by the Library of Congress.Paterson frequently writes about children confronting difficult issues. At 89 years old, the Vermont author shows little sign of slowing down. She recently published a new book, Birdies Bargain, about a child with a parent heading off to fight in Iraq.Paterson's books are among the most beloved in children's literature. They are also among the most banned. Book banning has lately been enjoying a revival, as books are being pulled from library shelves in “unprecedented” numbers, according to the American Library Association. Among the latest crop of books to be yanked from library shelves are Maus, the Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel about the Holocaust by Art Spiegelman; Beloved, by Toni Morrison; and The 1619 Project, a bestselling history of slavery in the U.S. that grew out of a special issue of the New York Times Magazine.Bridge to Terabithia rose to #8 on the American Library Association's list of the 100 most frequently challenged books for the 1990s; her book The Great Gilly Hopkins was #20 on that list. Only a handful of authors had their books banned more often in the 1990s, including Maya Angelou, Mark Twain and John Steinbeck.“If you write a book that has any power in it, it has the power to offend,” Paterson says. “I don't want to write a book that has no power in it, so I have to run the risk of offending.”
Since this is our very first episode we thought it would be appropriate to make the theme for this one, "Books that made us fall in love with reading".We cover Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson, Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by Beverly Cleary, and Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery (published as L. M. Montgomery). We also discuss the recent trend of sensitivity editors in the publishing industry, why Josie loves to write young adult books, and somewhere along the way one of us gets drunk.

Guest: Jeff Stockwell Today's episode is different and special, it's different because it's in english… and it's special because we got to sit with a very talented writer who wrote one of our favorite Disney films titled Bridge to Terabithia that was based on a novel written by Katherine Paterson and was published in 1977. Screenwriter Jeff Stockwell's produced credits also includes The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, Wilder Days, The Ottoman Lieutenant, and Disney's A Wrinkle In Time. He has done uncredited writing on projects including Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Rise of The Guardians and The BFG. Jeff spent 2016 as a contract writer at Pixar Animation Studios. He has worked on many independent and studio projects, now in various stages of development. They include The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane with Black Label Media, The Eighty Dollar Champion with MGM, and The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper with Fox Searchlight. Jeff is also one of the instructors at the Screenwriting Lab at Film Independent which is where he met Ammar in a screenplay workshop in Abu Dhabi. We got an opportunity to sit down with him and talk about writing and the film industry, we had a great conversation and we are sure you will enjoy it and maybe lear a thing or two if you are an aspiring writer. The Meaning Movement: Helping You Find Your Calling, Create Your Life's Work, and Make Career Change
My guest today is literally living legend—one of a small handful of people selected by the Library of Congress for their contributions to society. She's the author of many books, a few of which have also become movies. One of the many is the beloved novel, Bridge to Terabithia— read in 4 through 6th grade schools around the world. I am so grateful to have a chance to interview Katherine. Her wisdom and presence were so refreshing— and fun pattern interrupt to the typical guest demographic. We talked about career, writing, balancing family and work goals, loss and how she got started as a writer later in life than many (which I found to be very encouraging). Also, I ask all of my guests if there's anything they'd like to invite listeners to do. Her response is stopped me in my tracks. Make sure to listen through to it.
