Essential oils can replace a lot of things in your home, whether it's cleaning products, cosmetic products, or even some medicinal products! But there's a problem - not all oils are created equally. Essential oils are a somewhat unregulated industry, so it's important to know what to look for in the oils that you're buying. That's what Christa - the mom, wife, and essential oil expert - is back to tell us about today! Last week Christa Pettit came on the show to tell us all about these little bottles of magic that have taken over her life. The best part is, they're not magic! These babies are completely plant-powered, making them safe and effective for so many things in life. In that episode, Christa shared about the benefits of essential oils and all the different ways to use them. Today, she's back to tell us even more! I really wanted Christa to help those of us who are beginners in Part 2. If you've ever gone oil shopping, you know that it can get overwhelming quickly because of how many different oils there are to choose from! Where does one begin?! Christa's answering that (and more) today and also sharing how to pick brands that we can trust and how to handle the different price points. My favorite tip from today is to start slow - you don't have to own all the oils right now! Instead, figure out one place you can start and don't hesitate to dive in. Kathryn interviews Author Joanna Faber. Building on core themes of mutual respect, Joanna Faber and Co-Author Julie King suggest thoughtful, constructive, and sympathetic alternatives to yelling or punishment. As a part of the “How To Talk” series, readers will learn communication strategies to some of the most difficult challenges of raising children including tantrums, homework hassles and sibling squabbles. With its lively combination of real-life anecdotes, entertaining cartoons, and answers to topics requested by readers, Faber offers an invaluable resource for every parent, grandparent, teacher, and anyone else who lives or works with children—coming after a year in which adults and kids alike have been through so much. Her invaluable advice is quoted in NY TImes Parenting.Kathryn also interviews Author Oliver Burkeman. As the journalist and highly popular former weekly columnist on psychology for The Guardian Oliver Burkeman points out, the average human life is a mere four thousand weeks long. The unavoidable reality is that there will never be enough time to do it all. So how do we do what needs to be done, let go of what doesn't, and learn to find joy in the limited time we have? The accelerating pace of life leaves us impatient with experiences we might otherwise enjoy, such as time spent with a toddler, or pursuing a once-loved hobby. And we grow so obsessed with planning for an idealized future that we miss the pleasures of the only moment it ever is: this one. Burkeman's life-changing book is a thought-provoking blend of philosophical musings and practical advice on learning to shed our self-imposed expectations—to come to accept our overflowing email inboxes, ditch our unrealistic bucket lists, and use our precious weeks to build lives of purpose and accomplishment instead. His work has appeared in The NY Times, The Wall Street Journal, Psychologies, and New Philosopher.

As adults, we know what a gift music is, especially the gift of being able to create our own music and express ourselves in this way. And we want that for our kids. But there's this thing called "practicing" the musical instrument. And kids don't always want to do this! Co-authors of How to Talk When Kids Won't Listen, Joanna Faber & Julie King answer the question: How should teachers and parents talk when kids won't listen about practicing, and practicing becomes the subtitle of their new book: Whining, Fighting, Meltdowns, Defiance, and other Challenges of Childhood?! We are giving away a free copy of this book to one of you! This episode is all about the tools for praise and appreciation. Seems pretty easy, but did you know there are better ways to praise your child? In fact, certain praise can actually stop a child from doing a good activity. Who knew? We’re going to review the tools to help praise in ways that will help and not hinder. We started reading How To Talk So Little Kids Will Listen by Joanna Faber and Julie King and loved the tools in the first chapter that really help with emotional situations with your kids. When they have meltdowns or whine and complain, the initial thought is to teach them why they shouldn’t be doing that. But it turns out, children just want their emotions to be validated. Take a listen as we share how to respond to your kids when they have emotional meltdowns. Jennifer is the Vice President of Operations at Magic Memories Child Development Centers. She has been working with children and entrepreneurial since she started her own business at age 11, “Best Babysitter.” Today, she discusses her path from starting as Director to growing with the company in the now three locations. She and Kris talk about the importance of having a director that holds everything together like glue, hiring based on core values, how her strategy of onboarding evolved, and how they have developed their culture. Jennifer leads with positivity and connection and shares how she manages conflict resolution and tips on how to have hard conversations. Key Takeaways: [3:42] Even at a young age Jennifer loved combining her business talents and desire to work with children. When she was 11 she started her first business, “Best Babysitter.” [5:07] Jennifer is the high-level glue that holds it all together at Magic Memories. The key parts of her day include working on essential pieces of the operational side. She works directly with the Directors and Assistant Directors to make sure they are meeting their mark and sticking to their set standards. [8:04] Jennifer has a dedicated and loving family, all which help her in the work/life balance. As of this fall, her kids are enrolled in the Magic Memories Center. [12:33] They take a thoughtful approach to hiring at Magic Memories. They ask questions based on core values, look for how a candidate engages with other teachers, and take their time rather than hiring in a rapid-fire or desperate manner. They also hire within and keep A-list candidates always at the forefront of possible recruits. [21:44] Jennifer and her team at Magic Memories are always evolving the onboarding process. Currently, it is a 3-5 day training process that manages consistency and leads to the ultimate level of customer service for both parents and kids. [28:20] Jennifer leads with empathy and humility and it is apparent in the way she hands conflict resolution. She first looks to get to the root of the problem and connect heart-to-heart. She also encourages herself and others to cool down and get a handle on their own emotions to bring clarity and calm into the situation. She helps others remove their own blinders and shows her staff that to err is human but good learning lessons come out of the process. [33:57] Great cultures have a team that supports one another on the good days, and the not-so-good. [37:32] Jennifer describes a Rock Star as someone that finds joy in everything they do. [43:42] Find people that inspire you to mentor and coach you. [46:49] When you have fun with your culture and provide rewards and shout-outs, it creates a fabric of trust woven deep within the company. Joanna Faber is coauthor (with Dr. Julie King) of: HOW TO TALK SO LITTLE KIDS WILL LISTEN: A Survival Guide to Life With Children Ages 2-7. The book is entertaining as well as informative as it shares stories and tools/ ideas on how to deal with all kinds of issues with these young kiddos. It's a process, and an important one that helps kids grow to be understanding and empathetic youth and adults. Rather than dictating what needs to be done, making it a game, changes the scene. Instead of telling kids to clean up the room, make the basket for the blocks a monster that's eating the blocks. Kids feel heard and acknowledged. And this is great not just for parents, but teachers as well, anyone spending time with these little ones. www.howtotalksolittlekidswilllisten.com

If you would love to really connect with your kids on a deeper level, but you're battling to keep your head above water with the daily demands of life as a single mom or dad, listen in today and find out how you can adopt a new and more effective approach to parenting. Today's guest, Julie King is co-author of the book How To Talk So Your Little Kids Will Listen. After completing Law School and having had her first child, Julie became aware of how people were talking to their children and realized that most people knew nothing of the approach to child rearing that she, herself had been raised with. When her daughter was in pre-school and Julie was studying Group Facilitation and Group Development, she offered to read a workshop-style book on child rearing to a parent group at the school. Due to the demand from the parents attending this group, it continued way beyond the initial eight week period and eventually turned into an ongoing support group for the next four and a half years! Other people heard about it, so Julie was asked to facilitate other groups and this is how Julie found herself involved with something fantastic, that she had not planned on doing. Listen in and find out how Julie conferred with her old friend Joanna Faber, who was doing similar work on the East Coast and how they ended up writing a book together. You're going to find this conversation really helpful!
