Researchers, led by Konstantin Batygin, used the orbits of Jupiter's small moons, Amalthea and Thebe, to deduce these findings, providing critical insights into the early stages of planetary formation. The implications of this research could reshape our understanding of gas giants and their formation processes across the universe.Gamma Rays and LightningIn a groundbreaking discovery, scientists have detected intense flashes of gamma rays produced by lightning strikes. This phenomenon, known as terrestrial gamma ray flashes, occurs when lightning accelerates electrons to near light speeds, resulting in bursts of radiation. The study, published in Science Advances, sheds light on the high-energy processes occurring in Earth's atmosphere, enhancing our understanding of lightning's power and its effects on our planet.Precision Formation Flying in SpaceHistory has been made in Earth orbit as two spacecraft from the European Space Agency's Proba 3 mission successfully flew in millimeter-perfect formation for the first time. This precision alignment is crucial for studying the Sun's corona, allowing the two satellites to simulate a single large spacecraft. We discuss the technology behind this mission and its potential to revolutionize solar observations.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com✍️ Episode ReferencesNature Astronomyhttps://www.nature.com/natureastronomy/Science Advanceshttps://www.science.org/journal/sciadvBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/spacetime-space-astronomy--2458531/support.00:00 This is Space Time Series 28, Episode 64 for broadcast on 28 May 202501:00 Jupiter's original size and magnetic field12:15 Gamma ray flashes unleashed by lightning22:30 Precision formation flying in space30:00 Science report: New contact lens technology for night vision

A rockin' conversation with Professor Batygin about his perspectives on modern cosmology, how paradigms shift, and what the field looks like at the very horizon. We want to know - what are the roads to forming new planets? What about stars? What about heavy elements? This is another piece of the "why is this happening" puzzle, where we attempt to understand how and why certain ideas in science appear unchallengeable, in service of slowly helping the paradigm shift. My guest in this episode is the one the only Konstantin Batygin. He is a musician and astronomer whose day job is as a professor of Planetary Sciences and Orbital Mechanics at Caltech. Yes, that means if the sitcom The Big Bang Theory were real, he would have an office in the same department as Sheldon. As an astronomer, his research mostly focuses on the formation and evolution of planetary systems. He is most famous for his research with Michael E. Brown on the proposed existence of a ninth planet in the Solar System. Brown and Batygin are using various methods to search for a massive planetary body they believe is in the outer solar system. Before we get into all the nerdy planetary stuff, we talk about Batygin's upbringing in Japan and Santa Cruz. How he discovered Metallica and the guitar. His early attempts at punk bands and the new albums he is working on with his current band The Seventh Season. In this conversation, we talk about music, planetary science, and how they recently came together when Batygin helped compose the guitar elements of a symphony dedicated to his planet nine research with the Miami symphony. From power cords to planetary orbital mechanics this is one of my favorite interviews. If you dig what I am doing don't forget to Like, Rate, and Subscribe to Postcards. Astronomers Are Closer Than Ever To Spotting Planet Nine Article Link: https://advocator.ca/science/astronomers-are-closer-than-ever-to-spotting-planet-nine/9147 Those times are long gone since Pluto was demoted to the dwarf planet status back in 2006. Reasons why Planet Nine exists There is proof that shows us that a ninth planet could exist. The first time Planet Nine was mentioned was back in 2016, in a paper written by astrophysicists Konstantin Batygin and Michael Brown. Back then, they discovered that in the Kuiper Belt region comets and asteroids orbit in the same direction, and, more than that, they had their orbits tilted in the same way. Looking for Planet Nine At the moment scientists are using the Japanese Subaru Telescope in Hawaii's Mauna Kea Observatory to observe the orbits of the solar system objects. They are trying to find more evidence for their theory, and, at the same time, they try to determine the size of the mysterious planet. Scientists believe that Planet Nine is five times larger than planet Earth, and its orbit is supposed to be beyond Neptune. According to NASA Article Link: https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/planets/hypothetical-planet-x/in-depth/ Caltech researchers have found mathematical evidence suggesting there may be a "Planet X" deep in the solar system. This hypothetical Neptune-sized planet orbits our Sun in a highly elongated orbit far beyond Pluto. The object, which the researchers have nicknamed "Planet Nine," could have a mass about 10 times that of Earth and orbit about 20 times farther from the Sun on average than Neptune. It may take between 10,000 and 20,000 Earth years to make one full orbit around the Sun. The announcement does not mean there is a new planet in our solar system. The existence of this distant world is only theoretical at this point and no direct observation of the object nicknamed "Planet 9" have been made. The mathematical prediction of a planet could explain the unique orbits of some smaller objects in the Kuiper Belt, a distant region of icy debris that extends far beyond the orbit of Neptune. Astronomers are now searching for the predicted planet. Few events in recent astronomical history have had the worldwide emotional resonance as the 2006 announcement that Pluto was no longer considered a planet, at least as far as the International Astronomical Union was concerned. The decision was a long time coming, but no person deserves more credit/blame for forcing the astronomical community's hand than Caltech astronomer Michael Brown. He and his team discovered a number of objects in the outer Solar System -- Eris, Haumea, Sedna, and others -- any of which was just as deserving of planetary status as Pluto. Rather than letting the planetary family proliferate without bound, astronomers decided that none of these objects dominated the orbits in which they moved, so none of them should be planets. Now Brown and his colleague Konstantin Batygin have found indirect evidence that there is another real planet far beyond Pluto's orbit -- which they have dubbed Planet Nine just to remind you that there are currently only eight. Berkeley in 1994, and is currently the Richard and Barbara Rosenberg Professor of Planetary Astronomy at Caltech. He shared the Kavli Prize in Astrophysics in 2012 for his discovery of major new objects in the outer Solar System, and in 2007 won Caltech's annual Feynman Teaching Prize. Joking's favorite Professor Konstantin Batygin is back to explain how he discovered that equation that governs the quantum world of Schrödinger's cat fame, also describes planetary disks and the formation of solar systems. He also breaks down the progress on the dark hunt for Planet Nine.
Konstantin and his colleague accomplished something that only a handful of people in the history of man have done. They reshaped our solar system. Using advanced math and predictive modeling, they discovered planet 9. A yet unseen member of our solar system.

Researcher: Konstantin Batygin, Caltech Description: Konstantin Batygin talks about using math to investigate the existence of Planet Nine.
Show favorite and Planet Nine discoverer Konstantin Batygin and Astrophysicist Fred Adams join the entire SYJ gang including Patriots Day star Jimmy O Yang and the newly appointed co-host Matthew Broussard to discuss just how lose the sun's grip on the solar system really is.
Patt Morrison speaks with Mike Brown and Konstantin Batygin about their hopeful discovery of a new addition to our very own solar system: Planet Nine.
Planet Nine is a hypothetical large planet in the far outer Solar System, the gravitational affects of which would explain the unusual orbital configuration of a group of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) that orbit mostly beyond the Kuiper belt. The hypothesis first took form in a 2014 letter to the journal Nature by astronomers Chad Trujillo and Scott S. Sheppard, who had inferred the possible existence of a massive planet from similarities in the orbits of the distant trans-Neptunian objects Sedna and 2012 VP113. On 20 January 2016, researchers Konstantin Batygin and Michael E. Brown at Caltech argued that a massive outer planet would be the likeliest explanation for the similarities in orbits of six distant objects. The predicted planet would be a super-Earth, with an estimated mass of about 10 times that of Earth (approximately 5,000 times the mass of Pluto), a diameter two to four times that of Earth, and a highly elliptical orbit that is so far away that it could take around 15,000 years to orbit the Sun. On the basis of models of planet formation that might include planetary migration from the inner Solar System, such as the fifth giant planet hypothesis, the authors suggest that it may be a primordial giant planet core that was ejected from its original orbit during the nebular epoch of the Solar System’s evolution. Konstantin Batygin discovered the ninth planet in our solar system all before turning 30! His advisor, having "killed" Pluto’s planet status, was also part of the discovery, which was by indirect means. Also joined by Comedian Amir K, catch him in the film The Pyramid, this month on HBO. Konstantin explains to Amir and the SYJ crew how certain he is that the new unnamed planet will found directly in the next few years.
Not content with being the self-proclaimed "Pluto Killer", CalTech professor Mike Brown has now co-authored a paper hypothesizing the existence of, in his own words, "the most planet-y of planets" or "Planet 9", in the far outer reaches of our solar system. We get it: you hate Pluto! But personal planetary battles aside, this is an interesting bit of dynamical detective work in which lead author Konstantin Batygin and Brown argue that a roughly Neptune-sized planet several hundred times further from the Sun than the Earth is needed to explain the peculiar configuration of a dozen or so objects in the Kuiper Belt. Jim Cooney joins Josh and Addie to talk about Planet 9. If it's the most planet-y of planets, let's come up with a new name for whatever the Earth is.
