In early January 2025, catastrophic wildfires swept through the ancestral homelands of the Tongva, Tataviam, Serrano, Kizh, and Chumash Peoples. National media coverage largely overlooked how our Indigenous relatives were responding, and coping amid the uncontrollable flames, and how they were recovering after. To document these stories from an Indigenous perspective, we sent our teammate Francisco “Panchó” Sánchez, a Xicano filmmaker and journalist, to Tovangar.  In this episode, he sits down with community members, activists, and organizers so we can hear their experiences and understand this climate crisis from an Indigenous perspective. We are honored to be in conversation with:– Jessa Calderon (Chumash and Tongva), poet, musician, author of Sisterhood, and Director of The Land, Water and Climate Justice for Sacred Places Institute for Indigenous Peoples– Jolie Varela (Tule River Yokuts and Nüümü), founder of Indigenous Women Hike.– Vanecia Antuanette Edwards (Mvskoke), Senior Director of Operations and Strategy at Urban American Indian Involvement (UAII).– Amy Stretten (Chickahominy), Director of Marketing and Communications at UAII.– Alexia Palomino Cortez, PhD candidate and Altadena fire survivor.– Katherine Guerrero-Yañez, adopted Tongva tribal member and Altadena high school teacher. If settler-colonialism's land mismanagement is the root of our current climate catastrophe, then the path forward is rooted in Indigenous land stewardship, for we know fire as a relative, water as life, and earth as home. The stories shared in this episode remind us that the work ahead requires us all — not just to respond to crisis, but to return to relationship. To steward, to protect, to show up for each other like family. Because relatives keep us safe.Learn more and support the work of our guests: – Sacred Places Institute for Indigenous Peoples: sacredplacesinstitute.org – Indigenous Women Hike: indigenouswomenhike.com – Urban American Indian Involvement (UAII): uaii.orgCreditsReporting, field production and film work by Francisco “Pancho” Sánchez (@videosdelsancho)Editing by Teo ShantzProduced by Matika WilburCo/hosted by Temryss LaneSocial Media by Katharina Mei-Fa BrinschwitzSend us your thoughts!Support the showFollow us on Instagam @amrpodcast, or support our work on Patreon. Today (July 19, 2022), the Los Angeles Dodgers will host the 2022 MLB All-Star Game for the first time since 1980, and Dodgers future Hall of Famer Pitcher and 9x All-Star, Clayton Kershaw, will take the mound and start his first ever All-Star Game in front of the hometown crowd.  The 2022 season is also the 60th anniversary of Dodger Stadium, but the Dodgers do not want you to know about the dark history of Dodger Stadium. So as the biggest stars in Major League Baseball take the field tonight under the bright lights of Hollywood, the Dodgers and Major League Baseball can not hide the dark history buried under the blue (literally). On May 9, 1959, The LA County Sheriff's forcefully removed Aurora Vargas and her parents, The Arechigas. Thus, the last family of the three Mexican/Indigenous communities, Palo Verde, Bishop, and La Loma, were displaced. Of course, the Dodgers do not want you to know about this dark history, but we do!  Miguel spoke to two descendants of the displaced families who had their land stolen to build Dodger Stadium: Melissa Arechiga and Vincent Montalvo of the organization Buried under the blue. The families of the three communities created the organization Buried Under the Blue to teach people what happened to the three Mexican/Indigenous communities and seek justice and support for communities facing displacement today.   To end the podcast, instead of our usual Molotov MVP and Xicano/a sports History segments, we included more history on the displacement of the three communities. This week, Miguel speaks to Dr. Jose Alamillo  (http://josealamillo.cikeys.com/), professor of Chicana/o Studies at California State University, Channel Islands. Dr. Alamillo is a cultural historian who teaches and writes about immigration, labor, race, gender, leisure, and sport. Dr. Alamillo is also the author of Deportes: The Making of a Sporting Mexican Diaspora. Miguel spoke to Dr. Jose Alamillo about his book Deportes and the development of the Sporting Mexican Diaspora in the 20th century between Mexicans on both sides of the border. They discuss the importance of boxing, baseball, and other sports in developing a transnational sports network between Mexico and what became known as Mexico de Aufera, which was Southern California & beyond. The development of this network through sports created what Dr. Alamillo calls the Sporting Mexican Diaspora.   Additionally, Dr. Alamillo described how the U.S. government's imperialist project in Latin America deliberately shaped the Sporting Mexican Diaspora through the Good Neighbor Policy and the Office of Iner-American Affairs (OIAA). Dr. Alamillo also explained the importance of Mexican sports journalists in developing the Mexican sporting diaspora, plus more!   Episode 20s Molotov MVP is the legendary Mexican/Chicano Tennis superstar Richard "Pancho" Gonzalez. He faced racism as a Mexican in a sport dominated by the white establishment. Nevertheless, El Maestro de la Raqueta was ranked #1 in the world of tennis for eight consecutive years, from 1952-1960, and was in the top 10 for 21 straight years, from 1948-1969. After the segment, Miguel included archival audio from a 1950s sports program called Jimmy Powers Press Box Favorites featuring Pancho Gonzalez.   Lastly, Miguel highlights the legendary Chicana labor organizer and teacher, Emma Tenayuca, for episode 20s Xicano/a sports history. On May 9, 1959, Los Angeles Sheriff Deputies forcefully removed and arrested Aurora Vargas, daughter of Abrana and Manuel Aréchiga. The City of Los Angeles displaced the Aréchiga’s and the communities of Palo Verde, La Loma, and Bishop to build a new stadium for the Dodgers. The Dodgers had just arrived in LA from Brooklyn in 1958. The 62nd anniversary of this event was this past Sunday, May 9, 2021.   So, for today’s episode, I am honored to be joined on the podcast by writer and former VICE editor Eric Nusbaum (@ericnus). In his book, STEALING HOME: Los Angeles, the Dodgers, and the Lives Caught in Between, Eric did a fantastic job recounting the displacement of Palo Verde, La Loma, and Bishop to build Dodger Stadium. Eric rightfully centered the story on the Aréchiga’s but connected several other stories as well. For example, Eric tells me about the LA Housing Authority official, Frank Wilkinson. Mr. Wilkinson hand-picked Palo Verde, La Loma, and Bishop as the new site (without asking the residents) for the city’s ambitious public housing project. Eric also explained how red scare politics derailed the project and Wilkinson’s life and career. Eric also detailed how Walter O’Malley’s Dodgers ended up in Los Angeles and gives us a little history of the LA baseball scene before the team’s arrival. As a Xicano who grew up a Dodger fan, we should never forget what happened to the three communities.  “Dodger Stadium should not exist!” -Frank Wilkinson"Stealing Home has a driving plot, a humane heart, and a proud conscience. Read it and enjoy the story, or read it and get mad, or read it and change your mind. Most importantly, read it.”     —Chuck D, Founding member of Public Enemy For more information, please visit www.buriedundertheblue.com. Buried Under the Blue (BUB) is “an indigenous platform bridging the past and present communities through historical context, education, environment, community services, and technology. To empower and educate people to create healthier communities for a united future.” Special thanks to Melissa Aréchiga for allowing me to use the video audio from a BUB IG video.  Go check out Eric Nusbaum’s latest project, Sports Stories. Feliz Cinco De Mayo! I am joined on the podcast this week by Xicano poet and author, Matt Sedillo, of Tele-Jaguar; and by Rudy Mondragon, co-host of The Split Draw Podcast. The episode is all about "Mexican-Style" boxing, and Matt and Rudy discuss their ongoing project on “Mexican-Style” boxing. They both get into the actual boxing style, the narratives, stereotypes, and contradictions associated with "Mexican-Style" boxing. Matt and Rudy also push back against the racist stereotypes that "Mexican-Style" boxing is unskilled, savage, and un-scientific; narratives pushed by the white boxing establishment. However, Mexican and Xicana/o boxers, and even European boxers such as Gennady Golovkin, aka "Triple G,"  embrace the style and narratives of Mexican-Style boxing. We also discussed and previewed the Andy Ruiz Jr. vs. Chris Arreola fight on May 1, 2021 (we now know Ruiz Jr. won with a unanimous decision) and the Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez vs. Billy Joe Saunders annual Cinco De Mayo fight this upcoming Saturday, May 8, 2021. We also talked some baseball since he grew up a Texas Rangers fan and I grew up an LA Dodgers fan; which leads to a discussion on the MLB Word Series bubble that was held in Texas because of COVID-19. Also, since Irvin co-hosts his own Simpsons podcast (Eat My Shorts: A Simpsons Podcast), he tells me what his favorite Simpsons episode is (spoiler: it involves sports!) Lastly, I finish the podcast with the second-ever Molotov MVP segment, where I decide to pick co-Molotov MVPs: Oregon women's college basketball star Sedona Prince (@sedonaprince_) and former NBA player and University of Wisconsin men's college basketball player Nigel Hayes (@NIGEL_HAYES). This past week, both players (March 17 and March 19) called out the NCAA's hypocrisy and corruption. Prince exposed the NCAA's gender bias when she tweeted a video of a very empty and basic weight room set up at the NCAA women's basketball tournament. Prince then gave her followers a glimpse of the men's tournament weight room which was fully stocked and looked like an actual weight room. On March 17, Nigel Hayes was quoted in the UK's The Guardian. The article, 'I signed my life to rich white guys': athletes on the racial dynamics of college sports," was written by our End of Sport Podcast comrades Nathan Kalman-Lamb, Derek Silva, and Johanna Mellis. This special presentation from Mexicanos 2070 presents the history of Radio KDNA in Seattle, Washington. Here is a description of the segment and some of the people talking.  KDNA, also known as Radio Cadena, La Voz del Campesino, has served The Yakima Valley in western Washington for 40 years, facilitating not only information and entertainment but community development as well. For the last four decades KDNA has created specialized programs for the Chicano audience and motivated community organizations and campaigns related to the AIDS and COVID pandemics, the census and electoral politics. Its program, MIGRA WATCH, inspired United Farmworkers Union co-founder César Chávez, who in 1979 visited KDNA-FM and marveled at the radio station’s farmworker-oriented operations, which in 1983 developed KUFW Radio Campesina, equally convinced that radio was the most efficient means of reaching farmworkers toiling in the fields.   Rosa Ramon is the only female co-founder of KDNA and served as the station manager from 1979 to 1984. She represents the radio station’s historical significance as a producer but specifically as a Chicana feminist. Ramon’s contribution to the foundation of KDNA reveals the important and central role women thought played in the founding and development of this station, particularly in its focus on programming for, by, and about women.   Gilberto Alaniz runs the Northwest Community Education Center which houses KDNA. As the station’s special projects director, he sees expanding the building to provide more services to the community through KDNA. He focuses on needs of the population they serve and require more “pesticide research, scholarships for adult education, English as a second language classes, and to learn how businesses are managed in the United States.   Monica De La Torre is an Assistant Professor in the School of Transborder Studies at Arizona State University. What up everyone!! Welcome to another episode of LEMeKNOW My guest on today's episode is Dr. Martín Alberto Gonzalez Dr. Martín Alberto Gonzalez is a Xicano raised in Oxnard, California. He completed his undergraduate studies at California State University, Northridge, then earned his doctorate from the Cultural Foundations of Education Department at Syracuse University, where he became the first Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellow in the university's history. Because he personally observed his older siblings and his community's talents and interests be denied and repressed due to a lack of resources and opportunities, he became interested in issues related to social justice. As a teacher-scholar-activist, Dr. Gonzalez takes pride in telling stories that challenge stereotypes and empower his community and communities alike. Back in 2018 he came on to promote his first book 21 Miles of Scenic Beauty ... and Then Oxnard since he came on the first time he has published his second book The Key to the City | La Llave de la Ciudad. The key to the city is about Jacobp. Jacobo comes from a Spanish-speaking home in Oxnard, California. Even though his parents speak Spanish exclusively, Jacobo is embarrassed and ashamed to speak Spanish in public, especially in front of his friends. But one day, this changed for him during a bus ride to the store. During this trip, Jacobo learns that he plays a very important role in his community. Since he speaks both English and Spanish, he is able to help out Spanish-speaking people like his parents navigate their daily lives. By the end of the bus ride, Jacobo realizes that he holds the key to the city. Make sure you grab his book. Enjoy this episode. Además de ser el arquitecto de muchos de los edificios más representativos de la ciudad de México, Pedro Ramírez también escribía libros, diseñaba muebles, hacía esculturas y hasta logotipos y marcas de empresa. One of the main topics that constantly come up in discussion like the one we are having is how our community has very little sense of history. We are very clear about the historical myths that found the United States. These myths are taught to us from the moment we walk into school as babies (literally) and are then relentlessly pounded into our heads for the next 12 years. For many of us our first contact with Xicano/Mexicano/Indigenous history of any kind does not happen until we get to college. Therein lies the rub – most of us never make it to college. We have our Sheroes/Heroes, martyrs, and minstrels/jokers. The epic figures that stand above all as beacons of resistance to Anglo oppression and we fixate on them as we have been taught to do. The truth is every one of us has benefited from the love and mentorship of someone from our community both in and out of our families. Let’s talk about those people. Let’s talk about the example they have set and how our forgotten ancestors have dragged the very notion of being Mexican, Puerto Rican, Colombian, Xicano into the present/future. The more we name our Sheroes/Heroes, martyrs, and minstrels/jokers the more we can put to rest the idea we are disorganized, and the movement is dead. Because clearly it is not.

In  the episode of The Reality Dysfunction Dr. Ernesto Mireles and Alex Yanish speak with famed organizer/author Ernesto Vigil of Denver, Colorado. Vigil was a leader in the Denver based Crusade for Justice and worked closely with Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzalez during the heyday of the organization. In his early 20's Vigil was the first Xicano draft resister in the Southwest and has spent the last 51 years pursuing justice for Xicanos in the United States. In this episode Ernesto Vigil will be talking about his forthcoming book titled Decades of Deception: the American Indian Movement, the FBI and the death of Anna Mae Aquash. Don't miss this riveting first hand account fully documented by one of the foremost scholars on the FBI's campaign against Xicano/Indigenous movements in the United States. ----- Vigil is also the author of The Crusade for Justice: Chicano Militancy and the Government's War on Dissent first published in 1999. Below is a description of the book: This definitive account of the Chicano movement in 1960's Denver reveals the intolerance and brutality that inspired the turbulent rise of the urban Chicano organization known as the Crusade for Justice. Ernesto Vigil, an expert in the discourse of radical movements of this time, joined the Crusade as a young draft resister where he met Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales, the founder of the CFJ. Vigil follows the movement chronologically from Gonzales's early attempts to fight discrimination as a participant in local Democratic politics to his radical stance as an organizer outside mainstream politics. Drawing extensively upon FBI documentation that has become available under the Freedom of Information Act, Vigil exposes massive surveillance of the Crusade for Justice by federal agents and local police and the damaging effects of such methods on ethnic liberation movements. Vigil complements these documents and the story of Gonzales's development as a radical with the story of his personal involvement in the movement. The Crusade for Justice describes one of the most important organizations fighting for Chicano rights. www.waroftheflea.org

So a Muslim and a Xicano sit down hood philosophize, right, and come to the conclusion that as awesome as both those things are, they're ultimately nothing more than one of the many layers keeping us from seeing the Truth. That what really matters is liberating ourselves from ourselves and others so that we may manifest the energy we waste in dealing with both towards actualizing our brief existence in this fleeting reality, instead.  This is a demanding thing to ask of anybody, but the rewards for those who take up this challenge can be nothing short of divine.  That's but one of the many ideas I had the honor of discussing in this episode with a very close friend and colleague of mine, sociology professor Allaa Salama. His research interests include activist research, immigration/citizenship, race and power, the politics of sports, and spatial politics. Miguel plans to pursue a Ph.D. in anthropology but recently accepted a position with the State of California’s Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education.Miguel’s research project focused on the impact of San José’s street peddler policies in conjunction with federal immigration policies on local undocumented Mexican street vendors. For example, the study probed the impact of San José’s special event policy, beginning with the National Football League’s (NFL’s) mandated temporary “clean zone” ordinance, which banned street vendors from downtown while San José hosted Super Bowl 50 (SB 50) in 2016. Similar policies that ban street vending are evident in other downtown San José events, such as the annual Christmas in the Park. Through race and space, these policies criminalize street vendors. Additionally, Donald Trump’s federal immigration policies fueled the creation locally of Migra Watch, a community defense network for undocumented families and their allies to report and respond to ICE raids. By combining activities in Migra Watch with ethnography from street vendors’ experiences, Miguel articulates the criteria needed to improve undocumented street vendor workspace and life.## Podcast link## Video link## Album art photo credit:Oliver Thompsonhttps://flic.kr/p/9zVPYBCC License: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/## Intro music credit:Awel by stefsaxhttp://ccmixter.org/files/stefsax/7785http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5/Urbana-Metronica (wooh-yeah mix) by spinningmerkabahttp://ccmixter.org/files/jlbrock44/33345https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/There's A Better WAY ! by Loveshadowhttp://ccmixter.org/files/Loveshadow/34402https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/"Jungle Tracking" by pingnewshttp://ccmixter.org/files/pingnews/13481https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
