About the Guest(s): Dr. Kyle Bryant is a respected chiropractor and expert in functional extremity adjusting, currently operating in Kennewick, Washington. He is a Certified Chiropractic Extremities Practitioner (CCEP) with extensive experience in integrating low-level laser therapy into chiropractic treatments. After beginning his chiropractic journey in Ireland, where he served as a team chiropractor for a traveling sports team, Dr. Bryant further honed his skills in Spokane, Washington. He has recently launched Functional Extremities Chiropractor (FEC), a robust training program for professionals aiming to specialize in extremity and joint care. Episode Summary: Join Dr. Chad Woolner and Dr. Andrew Wells in this enlightening episode of the Laser Light Show as they explore the intersection of chiropractic care and low-level laser therapy with special guest Dr. Kyle Bryant. Known for his expertise in functional extremity adjusting, Dr. Bryant shares insights about his newly launched program and the unique integration of laser therapy in his practice, ICE (Integrative Chiropractic and Extremities). Dr. Bryant discusses how his foundational experiences with sports injuries led to a passion for chiropractic care, particularly extremity adjustments. Through his Functional Extremities Chiropractor program, he aims to educate practitioners on handling extremity and joint issues effectively. The discussion highlights the complementarity of low-level laser therapy with chiropractic treatments, showcasing how these modalities can expedite patient recovery and enhance treatment outcomes. By stacking therapies like chiropractic adjustments and laser treatments, practitioners can offer comprehensive care that improves patient satisfaction and increases clinical efficacy. Key Takeaways: Dr. Bryant has launched the Functional Extremities Chiropractor program, designed to educate practitioners on effective extremity adjustments. Integration of low-level laser therapy with chiropractic adjustments can significantly expedite recovery and enhance treatment outcomes. The FEC system helps identify proprioceptive deficiencies in patients, allowing tailored treatments to improve joint function and alleviate pain. Laser therapy provides a non-invasive method to restore function and mitigate symptoms, benefiting a wide range of patient conditions. The combination of techniques and the systematic approach in Dr. Bryant's practice maximizes the physiological benefits for patients. Notable Quotes: "The FEC system helps chiropractors gain confidence by understanding how the biomechanical side of extremities influences the spine and vice versa." "Lasering the brain in conjunction with an extremity issue can help restore function as opposed to merely alleviating pain." "One of the biggest takeaways from chiropractic care combined with laser therapy is that there's only an upside potential." "With lasers, you can expand your ability to help a wider range of conditions walking through your door." "The goal is to find the source of issues, not only to relieve pain but to restore functionality." Resources: Functional Extremities Chiropractor Program: functionalextremitieschiropractor.com Clinic: Integrative Chiropractic and Extremities (ICE) Mentioned Practitioners: Dr. Trevor Berry, Dr. Brandon Brock, Dr. Kurt Gehr, Dr. Kristin Heischetter, Dr. Rob Silverman, Dr. Dan Murphy. ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 205 Mastering the Art of the Supermarket Answer When Someone Asks, How Are You with Jennifer Siedman Jennifer Siedman is a relatable, rare mom who has a lot of experience with rare disease. She is the Director of Community Engagement at the Courageous Parents Network and joins us to share her approachable strategies for engaging with friends and acquaintances as a rare parent or caregiver. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS What is the supermarket answer and what is the origin of it? The questions we get out at the supermarket are often simple and common— like "How are you?", "How is your child?", "How can I help?" or "Do you want to grab dinner?". I would get a barrage of questions and comments from people I bumped into at the store and I would have to think each time how I would answer. It felt complicated and I created a strategy to help, called the supermarket answer. It's a mental list that I would go through in my head to determine if someone wanted and could handle the truth, or if they just wanted the supermarket answer. We live a life others find difficult to connect with and it makes us feel disconnected to give the supermarket response and state that everything is great when it's not. I found that because I became comfortable in the process of evaluating what someone was looking for in their question and, more importantly, comfortable with determining what I needed in that moment, I started asking people what answer they were looking for. What is the strategy checklist? Ask yourself: What am I up for emotionally? What is the other person up for emotionally? What truth do you feel like telling in that moment? Do you need to share a trial or triumph? Are there situations where you feel more inclined to answer an honest and thorough answer over a supermarket answer? If I go to a party where there are few people that would relate to my life, I often feel myself aligned with sharing only the supermarket answer. On the other hand, I find that I almost never give the supermarket answer when I'm within my disease organization or with other parents that understand me and they're able to receive my emotional baggage the same way I can receive theirs. What is your advice for parents who are struggling to share their story? It's your story to tell however you want to tell it and it will evolve over time. Owning it and knowing you can tell little truths or big truths, depending on the day, can be very empowering and make answering those uncomfortable questions more comfortable. Understanding your own capacity to hold your vulnerability will help you embrace your story and know when it's the right moment to let big truths out. We talk about fatherhood, living with this disease, but also about the legacy that he is working to leave for his kids. As a part of this legacy, we talk about the new book he just released this month, Bedtime Stories for the Living.  About the Book If you live with a rare life altering disease, you spend a lot of time in your head. It's hard to put the thoughts into words. In Bedtime Stories for the Living, Jay Armstrong accurately articulates the thoughts of any person living with a rare disease or anyone simply struggling to overcome their challenges.” Kyle Bryant, spokesperson for the Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance and host of the Two Disabled Dudes podcast. A regular dad. A rare brain disease. A chance to live forever. A cell phone's ring interrupts the silence as Jay Armstrong sits in his high school classroom preparing for the year ahead. Something about the ring makes his stomach drop. It's his doctor. The words, “diffuse cerebellar atrophy, a rare, degenerative brain disease” float through the speaker. All of Jay's youthful dreams of being a writer rush back, flooding the twenty years he has spent teaching students how to appreciate novels, memoirs, and poetry. The care he put into teaching them how to write with clarity, insight, and humor, and how to dance at the prom. The bedtime stories he never told his children spin in his imagination. It will all die when he dies. Bedtime Stories for the Living is an episodic memoir in which Jay shows his children how to accept their limitations and find joy. The collection of tender, witty stories about fatherhood, persevering despite illness, and pursuing your dreams, demonstrates how love gives us the strength to face heartache with bravery, humor, and grace. Doctor Kyle explains how his practice is a little different than most traditional chiropractic clinics. Doctor Kyle focuses more on ‘TOTAL body health and looking at the root causes of peoples aches and pains when they come to him. As a Extremities certified chiropractor, he looks also at injuries and trauma that may result in patients chronic pain.Additionally, Dr. Kyle has a good understanding of chronic illnesses and how they too can have a better results with a full body adjustment. There is a misconception that chiropractors are ‘cracking spines and necks'. We discuss the myth around that and what is really going on when you hear a cracking soundThe other modalities that Dr Kyle incorporates in his practice are extra special. He also offers physical therapy techniques, laser, and vibrational therapy.Dr. Kyle believes that total health starts with the spine but the connection extends thru out the body starting from the brain.BIO: Dr. Kyle Bryant is a chiropractor who is the descendant of multiple Tri-citian generations. He attended Kamiakin high school and graduated in 2003. After playing collegiate soccer and earning his bachelor's degree from Gonzaga in 2007, he went on to begin his chiropractic education at the University of Western States in Portland, OR. After graduating in 2012 he moved abroad with his wife, Desiree, to Ireland to begin the first experience of his professional career. After a year over-seas, the Bryants decided it was time to become a little more settled to begin a family and further develop Dr. Kyle's career – which landed them in Spokane, WA. After 3 unforgettable years with treating patients and receiving a certification in extremity injuries, the Bryants again felt it was time to move due to their growing family – but this time back to home.Integrative Chiropractic and Extremities and Dr Kyle represent the ONLY active CCEP (certified chiropractic extremities practitioner) within a 100 mile radius, which allows him to incorporate arm and leg injuries into spinal dysfunction injuries. The certification required an additional year of study and requires an exceptional knowledge in biomechanics of the extremity joints and injuries that can result as a consequence of their dysfunction.“I enjoy working with patients and families of all ages who participate in a wide range of activities from weekend warriors, to musicians, to elite athletes. My approach is holistically focused within a chiropractic-wellness paradigm – I believe the body is self-healing and we must learn how to tap into these abilities if we are to understand solutions to our health. ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 100 A Rare Collection- Because of You with Kyle Bryant, Jennifer Siedman, Liz Morris, and Ashley Fortney Point There's power in storytelling- for the listener and the storyteller. A Rare Collection is a monthly series featuring people from the rare disease community, sharing a story with a common theme. Kyle Bryant, Jennifer Sideman, Liz Morris, and Ashley Fortney Point share stories of rare disease. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Kyle Bryant, Living with Friedreich's Ataxia Kyle was diagnosed with Friedreich's Ataxia at age 17. It's a disease that affects balance and coordination and has symptoms of scoliosis, vision loss, hearing loss and life-shortening heart complications. At the time he was diagnosed, he ignored that his future would be much different than what he'd imagined. After a few years, he wanted to take a cross-country bike ride. Kyle reads a page from his book about how he convinced his parents to join him. Jennifer Siedman, Mother to Ben Jennifer loved a little boy with a rare disease called Sanfilippo Syndrome. That boy graced this Earth for 17 years with a big lion roar of a laugh and a gentle heart. He loved farms, tractors, baseball and chocolate donuts. His quiet determination convinced a researcher to pursue a treatment and because of it, there are other children today with Sanfilippo Syndrome who's future might look different than his. Jennifer knows who she is today because she was Ben's mother. Jennifer shares a story of her mother-in-law who, through her own determination, modeled the skills she would need to be the best mother and advocate she could be to Ben.  Liz Morris, Mother to Colson The Pacific Northwest is abundantly beautiful. Seattle's true appeal is in it's wild spaces. Carkeek Park in northern Seattle is one of Liz's favorites with organic healing powers she needs. Trails lead through the lush woods, there's an expansive shoreline with built-in driftwood seating and open green hills overlooking the sea and mountains. Liz and her husband sat on the beach at Carkeek Park on a hazy August evening in 2016 and talked of their future. They talked of the future they wanted for their future child, which Liz was six months pregnant with. Colson was born in October 2016. He was impacted by mitochondrial disease, a genetic disorder that compromised his body's ability to turn food into energy. Liz shares a story of living with enough. Ashley Fortney, Mother to Davis In 2014, Ashley welcomed her son Davis into the world after a difficult pregnancy filled with many hospitalizations and much worry. From the start, the doctors thought there might be something different about Davis. Davis was diagnosed with Koolen-de Vries syndrome at age 7, but he's continued to grow, learn and prove that nothing can stop him. Ashley shares all the ways that Davis has helped the family grow and find support from others in the community and all the ways he makes the world a better place. When she was 9 years old, she began to lose her balance and things got progressively worse. When she was 12, she was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia. Our regular listeners may be familiar with Friedreich’s Ataxia because we have talked to other’s about the rare disorder (https://salemoaks.com/captivate-podcast/kyle-bryant-remember-why-we-are-doing-all-this/ (Kyle Bryant in episode 2) way back in 2019, and https://salemoaks.com/captivate-podcast/emerging-researcher-layne-rodden/ (Layne Rodden in episode 013)). For Shandra, her diagnosis gave her a focus on science, a reason to study, and a purpose.  Her story is informative and inspiring.  You can contact Shandra at shandra.trantham@gmail.com Plese support us a https://patreon.com/salemoaks Support this podcast

ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 045 Two Disabled Dudes - Kyle Bryant and Sean Baumstark When I became a part of the rare disease community after Ford was born, I didn't feel like I had any community at all. After Ford was born, I felt less connected to my friends and I sought out a new community through podcasts because hearing stories made me feel connected. Sean Baumstark and Kyle Bryant, the hosts of Two Disabled Dudes podcast, both have Friedreich’s ataxia (FA). They have been an impactful resource in my journey and I'm so excited they're joining me. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Can you tell us how you became friends and connected as podcasters? We met through cycling, raising awareness and did a couple bike rides together, including The World’s Toughest Bike Race - Race Across America (RAAM). It starts in San Diego, California and ends in Annapolis, Maryland. A documentary crew followed us and that experience really brought us together.  What is FA? Friedreich’s ataxia (FA) is a rare neuromuscular disease that affects muscle coordination from the toes to the fingertips. It also has symptoms of scoliosis, diabetes, vision loss, hearing loss and life-shortening heart complications. It's a rare disease that affects about 1 in 50,000 people. The condition is dual recessive so both parents can carry the damaged gene, but there's no warning indicators that it will affect the children. The average diagnosis age is 5-15 years old.  Can you share the background of The Ataxian? The film is our race against time in the Race Across America. It's relay style and we had 4 cyclists. The team has 9 days to get from the west to the east coast with no time to stop. We used this race as an opportunity to call attention to FA and raise awareness about life in the rare disease world. Everyone on the team had one mission- to finish before the clock stopped.  Sean, tell us about your organization, Determinence. After being diagnosed, I started doing day hikes with friends to think, talk and wrestle with the new outcomes we thought life was going to bring. It was on one of these hikes that we realized a lot of other people in my community at that time were inspired because they knew I didn;t walk well and struggled with hiking and climbing. People were inspired to get out, which turned into a 5K, then a 10K and eventually a half marathon. This idea of helping people accomplish something physically challenging for them was the driving inspiration behind Determinence. Determinence is a non profit I founded with a mission to help people in the world of disability to climb mountains and cross finish lines. Supporters can donate to the cause or get involved with a team.  Kyle, tell us about your book, Shifting Into High Gear. All of my cycling adventures are documented through blog posts, articles and the documentary. My first ride from San Diego, California to Memphis, Tennessee wasn't documented anywhere so I worked with a writer to publish the book, Shifting Into High Gear. It was an amazing process, thinking about my experience, what it meant to me and what it may mean to someone else who reads my story. We welcome Kyle Bryant of the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) to discuss his journey as a patient with Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA), as an active patient leader, and in his job as a liaison between the FA community and researchers. After being diagnosed with FA when only 17 years old, Kyle has dedicated his life to helping other people with FA and exemplifying the adage “Life is how we react to it!” He has reacted by becoming a long-distance bike rider, podcast host, author, and full-time patient advocate.  Kyle opens up about his drive to help others deal with the challenges of life with FA and other disorders. It started when he wrote a daily blog during his first big bike ride from San Diego to Memphis. The comments and responses to this blog made him realize “Oh my gosh, we can make a real impact” by giving people hope and community. It was life-changing for him. Kyle has a very healthy perspective on participation in clinical trials. He talks about his understanding that he may be just one small “mouse” in a study, but he can be the most powerful mouse that ever lived, an essential ingredient to make a drug a reality.   Kyle Bryant is the author of The Ataxian (https://smile.amazon.com/Ataxian-Sean-Baumstark/dp/B079YMBNGQ/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=The+Ataxian&qid=1570029801&sr=8-1) .

Growing up in northern California, Kyle Bryant (https://kyleabryant.com/) loved being outside and being active. But, his late teens would change everything. He began experiencing a loss in balance, coordination and strength. A battery of doctors and tests eventually led to a diagnosis of Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA), a rare, progressive neuromuscular disease that currently has no treatment or cure. While grappling with this diagnosis and all it meant, Kyle discovered cycling, and, along with it, a new lease on freedom. He's now completed numerous ultra-distance rides including "The World's Toughest Bike Race", Race Across America in 2010, as part of 4-man Team FARA which is the subject of the documentary The Ataxian. He is the co-host of the Two Disabled Dudes Podcast and the author of a moving new memoir, Shifting Into High Gear (https://amzn.to/31R1QaR). Bryant is also the founder and director of the bicycle ride fundraiser, rideATAXIA for the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA). rideATAXIA is currently held annually in 6 locations and has raised over $7 million for Friedreich's ataxia (FA) research since 2007.Check out our offerings & partners: Peloton: Try the Peloton Bike in your home for 30 days. Kyle Bryant joins host Frankie Picasso on Mission Unstoppable Radio. Kyle Bryant was diagnosed with Friedreich's Ataxia, at 17, a life shortening illness that threatened to put this athlete in a wheel chair in his 20’s. Needing some control over his life, Kyle decided he would ride 2500 miles on his bike to raise money and awareness for his disease. Little did he know, he would really find himself. As the miles passed on by, Kyle Bryant made a huge self discovery, one that not only changed his own life, but impacts the lives of anyone who reads his brilliant memoir, Shifting into High Gear. You see, whether one is able bodied, have a rare disease like Kyle or face a hang nail, each of us has a choice about three things. 1. How we choose to define ourselves, 2. What limits we place on ourselves, and 3. How much of ourselves we are going to give back for the greater good! However, as time moved on, Kyle began to see that he was not in this disease by himself. That there were opportunities for him to build community and be an example for others despite the obstacles that lay before him, the FA community and their families Kyle chose to break free from self imposed limits and limited thinking. He allowed the definition of himself to expand even as his disease took away. some of his others see defeat. abilities. It is a courageous person who shows up to really Live live where

“The Ataxian” follows Kyle Bryant, a charismatic Californian with Friedreich’s ataxia, whose ability to walk and speak is impaired, as he tirelessly works to raise awareness and funds for research for the neuromuscular disorder he was diagnosed with at age 17, Friedreich’s ataxia, a little-known, progressive, fatal disease, that has no cure. Its onset usually occurs in adolescence and lifespan is roughly the age of 30. Kyle says he wants “to do something crazy!” and pulls together a team of four bicyclists — himself (on a recumbent bike) and Sean Baumstark, a friend who also has the disease, along with two friends who happen to be stellar athletes — to take part in Race Across America, an annual competition that covers 3,000 miles in nine days traveling from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD. “The Ataxian” takes its viewers on a journey of inspiration, beauty, even euphoria. But its lasting contribution is in making the world a little more familiar with this disease, and a little less lonely for the families struggling against it.

Kyle was diagnosed with Friedreich’s ataxia (FA) at age seventeen and found that as the disease progressed he had to give up the sports so interwoven in his life growing up in Northern California; sports such as golf, baseball, basketball and football.  When Kyle's FA had progressed to a point where it became unsafe for him to continue riding his bike, he put a stop to the loss of the activity he cherished.  He took back control, purchased a recumbent trike, and resumed his riding with passion. Kyle started small with an initial ride of 7 miles.  However, fueled with a passion for pushing the limits and do more with his life Kyle built up to a century ride (100 mi in a day) within four months of his first ride.  Upon completion of his first time, he decided that the sky was the limit. In 2007 Kyle founded Ride Ataxia with a 2,500-mile 59-day ride from San Diego, CA to Memphis TN. The goal of the ride was to raise awareness and much-needed research funds for FA, a disease that has no treatment, no cure, no hope…until now. Kyle and Ride Ataxia did not stop in Memphis.  Kyle’s cycling feats include Sacramento to Las Vegas, NV, Portland, OR to Seattle, WA, and completion of Race Across America in which his four-man team finished the 3,000-mile race in 8 days, 8 hours, and 14 minutes. With his trike as the vehicle of change, Kyle took his hopeless situation of no treatment, no cure, no hope and turned it into an opportunity to do something great for himself and many others. In 2009 Kyle became the Spokesperson for the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) in their mission to cure FA.  With Kyle as the program director, Ride Ataxia has become FARA’s Marquee fundraising event with challenging yet family friendly bike rides all over the USA – welcoming 2500 participants and raising $800,000 per year.
