In today's podcast we're going to explore the UK government's latest announcement to invest vast sums of public cash in the nuclear industry. The latest spending review included £14.2bn to kickstart the Sizewell C plant and £2.5bn to underpin ongoing research into fusion technology. But crucially, it also outlined plans to pump £2.5bn into Small Modular Reactor development – something that I think is perhaps one of the most ambitious – and transformational announcements in the UK's energy history. And it's this announcement that I really want to focus on today. But it is also clear that after decades of hesitation, the UK government – through it's public energy business Great British Nuclear part of GB Energy - has committed to a bold new era of nuclear power, And its backing it with public cash. So what does this actually mean in practice? What is an SMR – and why is the government betting on them to power millions of homes and secure the nation's energy future? How do these small, factory-built reactors compare to the large-scale nuclear power plants like Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C? And critically – can we really deliver this bold vision on time, on budget, and with the skilled workforce we need?Well to unpack all of this – and help make sense of the opportunities and challenges ahead – I'm joined once again on the Infrastructure Podcast by Tim Stone, Non-Executive Director, Great British Nuclear and former chair of the Nuclear Industry Association, the body at the heart of this once-in-a-generation transformation and my go to mind for all things nuclear.ResourcesGovernment press release on SMRsRolls Royce SMR press release Government press release on Sizewell CGreat British Energy - NuclearNuclear Industry Association release on nuclear investment
Jury Tampering Allegations Plague Alex Murdaugh Murder Trial This episode explores the shocking allegations of jury tampering rocking the Alex Murdaugh murder trial. Murdaugh, a former South Carolina lawyer, was convicted in 2023 for the murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, and sentenced to two life terms without parole. However, his legal team is appealing the verdict, claiming jury tampering by former Colleton County Clerk Rebecca Hill. The allegations stem from the dismissal of juror Myra Crosby just hours before deliberations began. Hill alleged Crosby's ex-husband, Tim Stone, made Facebook posts about the trial, potentially influencing Crosby's opinion. Crosby denied the allegations, claiming she hadn't seen Stone in a decade. Stone also denied making the posts. Adding to the controversy, Crosby is fighting to make the records of her dismissal public. While the Attorney General's office argues against it, citing a confidentiality agreement, Murdaugh's attorneys highlight the "critical importance of public access to judicial proceedings," suggesting a potential cover-up. Adding fuel to the fire, another juror, Mandy Pearce, has come forward to express doubts about Murdaugh's guilt and the fairness of the trial. Both jurors, along with their attorney, Joe McCulloch, participated in a Fox Nation special, "Fall of the House of Murdaugh: From Egg to Z," detailing their experiences and concerns. These explosive allegations of jury tampering, coupled with the jurors' public doubts, cast a shadow on the integrity of the trial and the legitimacy of the guilty verdict. The South Carolina Supreme Court now faces the monumental task of unraveling this tangled web of accusations and determining if Alex Murdaugh received a fair trial. It's the first anniversary episode of the Infrastructure Podcast and today we are going to talk about nuclear power! When I first jumped ship from civil engineering to a new life as a journalist with New Civil Engineer 30 years ago, the magazine was gearing up to celebrate the Sizewell B project which was being commissioned as the first of a new breed of UK nuclear power stations - albeit somewhat over-budget.So my eye was drawn to last month's announcement by French power firm EdF that the new Hinkley Point C reactor in Somerset – set to be the UK's only new nuclear power station since 1995 - will now not open before 2029 – possibly not until 2031 - and could see costs climb to perhaps £46bn against an £18bn original budget. It certainly puts Sizewell B's project delivery achievements into context, which 30 years ago saw costs inflate by 135% but is now producing around 3% of the UK power needs, having taken a mere seven years to build. The good news is that after decades of dithering, the UK government is now firmly behind nuclear power as a key element in our transition away from fossil fuels, with the Energy White Paper of 2020 demanding at least one large-scale nuclear project to reach Final Investment Decision during this Parliament.Since then public money has been committed to the Sizewell C project, the government's 2020 10 point plan included a £385 million Advanced Nuclear Fund, its 2021 Net Zero White Paper committed to a new £120m Future Nuclear Enabling Fund; and in July last year we saw the rebirth of Great British Nuclear, a government owned body designed to coordinate the UK nuclear industry renaissance and drive the development of the small modular reactor market. But as is always with UK nuclear, it all seems to move at a glacial, hugely expensive pace and continues to beg the question – what on earth is going on with our nuclear and energy transition policy? Fortunately, I have with me today one the UK's authorities on the subject, Tim Stone, chairman of the Nuclear Industry Association and more recently a non-exec director on the new Great British Nuclear team, who I am hoping will shed some light.Tim is speaking with his NIA chairman's hat on today.ResourcesGreat British NuclearNuclear Industry Association Energy White Paper 2020The Ten Point Plan 2020Net Zero Strategy 2021

In the depths of dark family secrets, how far would one go to protect the truth? That's the burning question surrounding the recent revelations about Alex Murdaugh, as uncovered on the podcast "Hidden Killers" hosted by Tony Brueski. With FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer shedding light on the intricacies of the case, listeners were taken on a journey through the twisted tales and alleged murder conspiracies linked to the Murdaugh name. Alex Murdaugh's ties to the alleged suicide or murder attempt involving his buddy, Curtis Eddie Smith, has ignited a media frenzy. According to the new Netflix documentary, Smith claims Murdaugh approached him with the desire to be killed. Smith recounted, “Alex said to him, 'Because they're going to be able to prove that I'm responsible for Maggie and Paul.'” In this startling confession, Murdaugh seemingly acknowledges his potential involvement in previous untoward incidents. But Smith's statements in the documentary paint a different picture than initially assumed. Contrary to previous allegations, Smith denies pulling the trigger. Instead, he describes a frantic scene where Alex, in a state of panic, fell onto the gravel, resulting in his injury, and not from a gunshot as initially reported. Coffindaffer weighed in, noting the situation bears resemblance to O.J. Simpson's chase in the white Bronco. “It's their moment of realization that sort of ‘I'm nabbed'... I saw that analogous to this, to Alec Murdoch,” she commented. Brueski further added, “Of all the stories that we have, this one seems to make a little more logical sense.” Adding more twists to this convoluted tale is the drama involving a juror's dismissal during the Murdaugh trial. According to recent discoveries, the defense team has introduced evidence pointing out that a particular Tim Stone post, which was believed to have led to the unfair dismissal of a juror, may have been misconstrued. The contention revolves around whether the said Tim Stone was genuinely related to a juror. If found that the clerk of courts erroneously linked them, this could seriously undermine the trial's integrity. The significance of this revelation can't be understated, as Coffindaffer emphasized, “the thing is a juror was removed and changed in this that could have been a juror that could have hung this.” Beyond the immediate allegations, a dark lineage seems to overshadow the Murdaugh family. A chilling insight shared in the Netflix series from Paul's girlfriend detailed an unsettling anecdote about Alex's father, Randolph Murdaugh. To allegedly intimidate his wife who was contemplating divorce, Randolph is said to have published an obituary under her name as a scare tactic. Coffindaffer made a profound observation, stating, “the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.” She highlighted that many deviant behaviors are generational, passed down through families and often mimicked by younger members. The layers of deception, alleged crimes, and family ties in the Murdaugh case have left many in shock. But with new insights from professionals like Jennifer Coffindaffer and the comprehensive exploration in the Netflix documentary, the truth seems to be slowly unraveling. Yet, one can't help but wonder: In the midst of generational secrets and twisted tales, how many more shocking revelations about the Murdaugh family are still buried in the shadows, waiting to be uncovered? Recent episodes of the riveting podcast "Murder in the Morning" with Tony Brueski and Stacy Cole have delved deep into the shocking developments surrounding the Alec Murdaugh case. With claims of jury tampering, concealed evidence, and a trial filled with twists and turns, the latest revelations may just turn the entire case on its head. The Alec Murdaugh Scandal: Behind the Curtains of Justice In the aftermath of the six-week trial that concluded on March 2nd, 2023, the Murdaugh case seemed relatively straightforward. Yet, recent episodes of "Murder in the Morning" reveal a web of deceit that casts shadows on the integrity of the judicial process. Hosts Tony Brueski and Stacy Cole shared damning evidence that suggests potential misconduct and bias in the courtroom. "The defense began its case on Friday, February 17th, 2023," Brueski stated, highlighting the timeline of events. Curiously, the court was not held on February 20th, due to President's Day, and that's when things began to get murky. "After returning from the holiday, Ms. Hill began to enter the jury rooms often," Brueski continued, emphasizing the odd behavior of a key player in the trial. Stacy Cole, in her signature analytical style, commented on the alleged influence of Ms. Hill on the jury, "As the defense began its case, Ms. Hill told jurors, y'all are gonna hear things that will throw you off. Don't let this distract you or mislead you." This, she mentioned, was confirmed by an affidavit from Holly Miller, a juror. Furthermore, the relationship between Ms. Hill and juror number 286, the new jury foreperson, raised eyebrows. The two were reportedly having private conversations, the content of which was never shared with other jurors. One of the most chilling comments made by Brueski revolved around Alec Murdaugh's testimony: "Right before Alec went to take the stand, she goes to the jurors and says not to be fooled by the evidence Mr. Murtaugh's attorneys presented," a move that he called "fucking damning." This stark revelation was followed by another, where Ms. Hill allegedly instructed jurors to meticulously observe Murdaugh, indirectly implying his guilt. But what was perhaps the most shocking twist of all was the discovery of a Facebook post. Ms. Hill claimed to have seen a post by Tim Stone, ex-husband of juror number 785, stating his ex-wife's alleged verdict intentions. "She could not produce a copy," said Cole, adding that a supposed apology post followed it. Yet, after investigations, it was found that the real Tim Stone never made such a post. The genuine post was made by an unrelated individual also named Tim Stone, leading to a grave misidentification. The hosts didn't shy away from criticizing the evident misconduct in the trial. "He may be guilty as shit, but you can't run a trial like this. Not in America," Brueski passionately voiced, emphasizing the sanctity of the judicial process. Cole concurred, underscoring the importance of principles in the justice system, "Despite all the things that go wrong in our legal system... if we know for a fact that someone is tainting this and purposely trying to change verdicts, it needs to be redone." The sheer gravity of the allegations has led many to question the validity of the entire trial, and whether Alec Murdaugh was indeed served justice. As the hosts of "Murder in the Morning" concluded their discussion, listeners were left with more questions than answers. Brueski aptly summed it up, "This is about the rule of law and how we function and what we say is right and what is wrong." As this legal rollercoaster continues to unfold, listeners eagerly await the next episode, where Brueski and Cole will undoubtedly delve deeper into the shadowy corners of this perplexing case. Whatever the outcome, the revelations have firmly positioned the Murdaugh case in the annals of America's most controversial trials. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Brueski aptly summed it up, "This is about the rule of law and how we function and what we say is right and what is wrong." As this legal rollercoaster continues to unfold, listeners eagerly await the next episode, where Brueski and Cole will undoubtedly delve deeper into the shadowy corners of this perplexing case. Whatever the outcome, the revelations have firmly positioned the Murdaugh case in the annals of America's most controversial trials. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? We've all grown accustomed to disclaimers at the bottom or the end of advertisements. We know that, most of the time, there has to be a catch. But, even if there isn't a catch, most people don't have the will to face a mega-corporation to get what they are due. John Leonard isn't most people, though. In the mid-1990s, Pepsi ran the promotional campaign 'Pepsi Stuff.' The campaign concept was simple, drink Pepsi and earn points to purchase special edition gear. However, the ad showcased a student buying a Harrier Jet and lacked any disclaimer. Leonard knew he had them. Enlisting the help of friends and family, Leonard began amassing Pepsi points. His story brought him face-to-face with Pepsico's legal team. He nearly walked away victorious, but an unfortunate stroke of luck changed everything. Even still, it's incredible that John Leonard almost squeezed a fighter jet out of a soda brand.Things I Learned Last Night is an educational comedy podcast where best friends Jaron Myers and Tim Stone talk about random topics and have fun all along the way. There may not be a corner of the internet garnering more buzz today than Ai. Specifically, Ai-generated art is creating quite a stir. One side of Ai art that wasn't expected is a woman named Loab. In April of 2022 a user creating with an Ai-art generator created a terrifying image of a woman. This user subsequently recreated the woman in increasingly horrifying forms for months before releasing the photos to the public. He named her Loab after the text generated in one of the many images. The image is significant because of the sheer volume of images that have been created representing her. Furthermore, the gruesome nature of the images is unlike anything else in Ai art. Some believe there's a ghost in the machine. Like all other things in computing, there is a perfectly logical explanation.Things I Learned Last Night is an educational comedy podcast where best friends Jaron Myers and Tim Stone talk about random topics and have fun all along the way. Nolan Bushnell pioneered so much of the world we enjoy today. His crowning achievement, a company called Atari, brought video games into every household. Often he is credited as creating the world's first video game, pong. Even though video games, albeit nothing like the games we think of today, existed before pong. Along with his long list of successes, he's also the only person Steve Jobs ever worked for; Jobs spent time at Atari before founding Apple. Bushnell's unconventional management style and his strange workplace philosophy laid the foundation for the office culture that is prevalent today. As if all these things weren't enough, Nolan also started Chuck E Cheese. That's not a joke. After Atari, Bushnell made a pizza arcade with mice robots. This man is wild. James, The Fan Man, Miller is famous for something that no other person ever to live can claim the same fame. He fell into multiple boxing matches, football games, and even Buckingham Palace. Miller was a parachutist in the 1990s who loved the extreme sport of paragliding. He also was vocal about his distrust of social norms. Those two passions led Miller to his most famous stunt. He was skydiving into a boxing match at Caesar's Palace. In the 7th round of the heavyweight title fight match between Evander Holyfield and Riddick Bowe, Miller crashed directly into the ring, setting the whole arena into chaos. Despite the negative press, James could not stop attempting these stunts. In the 1950s, Sears printed a catalog ad encouraging kids to call Santa. That ad included a phone number to a Sears hotline. Except there was a typo in the ad. In 1989, retired millionaire Gene Flemming met Andy, the goose. Gene immediately took compassion upon Andy because the poor bird was born without feet. Flemming sought to remedy the goose's situation by inventing a mode of transit for the goose while on the ground. He settled for a modified pair of shoes. The gimmick worked like a charm. From that point forward, Gene and Andy formed an inseparable bond. In an inspiring turn of events, the duo gained notoriety throughout the nation. They made appearances at conferences, schools, and businesses across the United States. Eventually, Andy earned a sponsorship from Nike, and the two appeared as guests on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Unfortunately, this story does not come with a happy ending. On October 19, 1991, Andy was found dead in a local park. Gene spent his remaining years looking for answers that would never come. On the eastern tip of Long Island lies Camp Hero. The now-defunct military base has been reclaimed as a state park. However, the reuse of the space does not come with any less conspiracy. For years residents of the neighboring town of Montauk wondered what happened behind the security lines of camp hero. The expectation was nefarious, of course. Today we have full-blown conspiracy theories involving mind control, mutants, and even time travel. So, what, if anything, about the Montauk Project, is true? Fredrick Russell Burnham might have been the first model of American masculinity. His lifestyle would one day permeate into the 20th century as men across the country sought to adopt the mindset of Burnham. The long line of Fredrick's imitators is unsurprising since he was the inspiration for the founder of the boy scouts. Furthermore, one esteemed colleague of his had based much of his beliefs and behavior on him before rising to the president's office. Of course, we are talking about none other than Teddy Roosevelt. Burnham's influence surely is unmatched, and he has the combat record to back it up. However, few remember his part to play in the failed attempt to bring hippos to Louisianna. Fredrick Russell Burnham, along with a couple of unlikely allies, ran a campaign to popularize hippos into the American diet and begin farming hippos on American soil. The only thing that held back this plan was World War 1. Burnham's life, indeed, was extraordinary.Things I Learned Last Night is an educational comedy podcast where best friends Jaron Myers and Tim Stone talk about random topics and have fun all along the way. In the modern era, few famous eaters are household names. Perhaps the only one who has risen to that level is Joey Chestnut. However, that hasn't always been the case. In the years of the sideshow, people would line up to watch people eat stuff—a strange hobby. One of the more famous cases of people who live off of eating was the man known as Tarrare. His astounding ability to swallow just about anything whole and survive drew crowds from around Europe. His abilities even attracted doctors. In hopes of understanding what allowed him to eat things that would usually kill, Tarrare became the subject of research. That research led to his use in the military as an espionage agent. No one else in history can say that their diet made them a government asset. There is no one like Tarrare.Things I Learned Last Night is an educational comedy podcast where best friends Jaron Myers and Tim Stone talk about random topics and have fun all along the way. In the shadow of the 2008 housing crisis, one Malaysian businessman was building staggering wealth. It was an era wrought with financial fraud, and he was no different. Jho Low has become infamous for his lavish lifestyle and multi-million dollar benders. One of his most significant claims to fame was a new years eve event that he celebrated in Sydney, then boarded a private 747, flew to Las Vegas, and partied with celebrities so that he could do New Year's Eve twice. On the other hand, his crime is one of the largest financial scams in history at an estimated value of $4.5 billion. The immense scale of Jho Lows fraud is just the beginning of its intrigue because it also involved the Prime Minister of Malaysia, the Arab Emirates government, Goldman Sachs, and a slew of shell companies. Yet, after most of his associates have been arrested, Jho Low has not faced any punishment. Eve Online is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG for short [MMO for shorter {M for shortest}]). This game has repeatedly found itself in the headlines of more than just gaming magazines. Due to the ultra-realistic in-game economy, the game has often landed articles discussing the complexities of the in-game economic system in finance magazines. More than that, the game has made headlines about the large-scale scams that have taken place, sometimes robbing people of their money in the real world. While the in-game currency, isk, is not transferable to USD, sneaky players sell the currency for USD in the spooky dark web. This economy and the ability to maintain a position in the press have kept Eve Online's player base strong for nearly two decades. Imagine going out for a night on the town with your friends and returning home to a message on your computer. The scenario sounds pretty standard in the internet age. Now, imagine that same scenario in 1984, long before the internet had entered the public psyche. That is exactly what happened to Ken Webster when his BBC micro became a communication device between him and a mysterious other. Whatsmore, the person on the other end of the line claimed to be from the 17th century. To top it all off, Ken and his girlfriend Debbie have been trying to explain the strange, almost ghostly, events in their home to their new roommate Nic. All this culminated when the group contacted yet another entity on the other end of their BBC microcomputer, which claimed to be from the year 2109. The story seems too wild to be true, but for many who were close to those to whom it happened, the story is far from fiction. Dubbed the Doddleston Messages, these electronic letters predated email and have been attributed to time travelers, ghosts, aliens, and everything in between. A few years ago, escape rooms took the world by storm. The best of these experiences challenged players mentally and physically. The games sometimes even stressed the relationships of those who endeavor to compete together. Anyone who has completed one of these escape rooms has dreamed of a more significant challenge. San Francisco artist Jeff Hull realized that dream in 2014. The experience was called the Latitude Society, and it aimed to give people a sense of awe and wonder while also tangibly challenging them. It, however, had unintended consequences. The participants formed a bond with those who experienced it, and the members began to connect with it in a cult-like fashion. The story of the Latitude Society is a cautionary tale to some and an incredible journey to others. There's an interesting stretch of land in southern Panama known as the Isthmus of Panama. This unique land mass separates the Atlantic and Pacific oceans by just 51 miles of rocky terrain. Throughout history, people dreamed of a way to traverse this stretch of land by sea. Proposals for a canal through Panama date back to 1534, when it was proposed by Charles V. However, the project wasn't realized for another 400 years when the Panama Canal finally opened on August 15, 1914. This is no ordinary canal, though. It was a feat of modern engineering that is tantalizing even today. To make it even more phenomenal, you won't believe the star-studded list of people who had their hands in its history.
