We are talking about the first true rap album on the top 500. It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back by Public Enemy. We talk about the incredible sound on the album, Chuck D and his awesome presence and what do we make of Flavor Flav any way? Before we get into the album, we have a couple of special guests to talk about Minnesota United soccer and we once again debate how good is Wonderwall by Oasis as a stadium song. We talk about WHY Aarons was sleeping in a tent and how to buy albums if you aren't just looking for some Pearl Jam at PearlJam.com. We also talk about the Grammys and how the Wknd got screwed and we meet Dirty Granny, a new predictable character. Then we talk about the history of Public Enemy. How did Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Professor Grif, Terminator X and the Bomb Squad all come together to make the rap album that inspired the rest. We talk samples, rapping about not doing drugs and Aaron going to an exotic animal show. Then we talk about one of the greatest samples in R and B history, "Darkest Light" by The Lafayette Afro Rock Band. It has been used by Jay Z, Heavy D and of course, Wreckx-n-Effect. Then Russ drops a bomb on us and leaves us wanting more and Matt shows off his great Marv Albert impression. NEXT WEEK. WE ARE CHANGING IT UP AND LISTENING TO THE ROLLING STONE GREATEST ROCK CHRISTMAS SONGS. HERE IS A LINK. Young Toledo and Kolo Kai talk about what it means to be a Captain Save-A-Hoe and what you end up doing to yourself by taking on that role. "Even if you have a big tune, live crowds can get sick of it. It's not just about the song but also the staying power and if people have connected with it in a certain way. I know that the tracks I put more emotion and depth into are the ones that have the staying power in clubs." - Calvin Harris This week, DJ Dave is featuring songs by Genesis, Felix Cavaliere, Fred Wesley, Sleepy Sun, Colin Blunstone, MIKNNA, Alice Babs, Calvin Harris with PartyNextDoor, Nightmares on Wax, Pink, and The Lafayette Afro Rock Band! This week I am delighted to welcome Gavin Mendel-Gleason to the show. Gavin works as a Post-Doctoral researcher in the computer science department at Dublin City University. Gavin also writes for the very interesting blog: Spirit of Contradiction, which focuses on various different aspects of leftist or socialist politics and theory. Gavin recently wrote a really interesting article on some empirical and theoretical evidence from the world Econophysics that chimes with Marx’s two-class analysis of capitalism. These results are extremely interesting and serve as another illumination of the accuracy and power of Marx’s work. We also talk about Gavin's experiences working as an anarchist activist in Ireland, and his journey from that to more formal party politics. You can find his blog here: http://spiritofcontradiction.eu/ The music featured on this show was: ‘The Order of the Pharaonic Jesters’ by Sun Ra and his Arkestra ‘Working Man’ by Rush ‘Top Hat, White Tie and Tails’ by Fred Astaire 'Time Will Tell' by The Lafayette Afro Rock Band ‘Water No Get Enemy’ by Fela Kuti
