He went to college in New Hampshire to study audioengineering, but quickly found out that college wasn't for him. He started teaching himself howto mix on FL Studio, and began writing his first album, “The Darkest Light.” His first release wasa single called “Walls.”He left college after a year and was jumping from job to job, but it was stagnant to him. Duringthis time he was always somewhat depressed about his scenario, thinking there was an unfilledvoid. He said he was drinking a little too much, was going out multiple times a week, and this iswhen he discovered he has the ability to really hone in on peoples' feelings.

Martyn is the finest example of an artist who exists outside traditional genre boundaries. Ever since the mid-90s, the Dutchman has operated in his own adjacent worlds while drawing on UK bass hybrids, techno and electro to cook up singular rhythms and unique moods. The 3024 label head has always used his platform to bring through new talent, and now also mentors young artists with his own Patreon program. This sits next to his ever spell-binding performances in the club and eye-opening monthly Darkest Light show on NTS, which is a deep dive into his love of jazz. This week's mix is a 70-plus minute snapshot of Martyn's sound, which is as timeless as ever. From the crispness of Detroit electro to the off-beat thump of bass via his deep techno lit up with glistening electronics, it is a perfect blend of body and head and one full of brazen moves. There's a switch to jazz-laced broken beat and low, then the slow wobble of dubstep before a rebuild towards old school jungle that proves this is the sound of a true master at work.
your stories are a gift. your time is a gift. your attention is a gift. and when you share generously with others it can feel like you’re making a connection. but over time, if there isn’t reciprocity, it can start to feel bad and you realize how one sided it’s been. i don’t think that every action requires a response in kind, and we don’t give gifts expecting a return, but when you receive very little it’s hard to keep trying.i’m thinking about where i want to put my energy. and i’m not yet sure how to make that decision, but my energy is limited. and although i feel pulled strongly towards new connections and excited about exploring possibilities, i also want to be better at celebrating my existing connections. particularly the ones that make the effort. and in the same way that i don’t expect every connection i investigate to be mutual, i shouldn’t respond just to respond. i could simply prioritize the ones that i know already feel good and save some energy to continue exploring others.i’m writing this here, and i’m going to try, but damn that allure of potential. perhaps it’s not so simple.DOWNLOAD/STREAM RECORDING00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 LOS JAMBOS “Chico formal” Chicos formales02:12 The Hecks “Flash” My Star07:00 Options “Easy Try” Pacific Notion II08:53 ILL “Bus Shelter” We Are ILL13:34 Simon Joyner “Yellow Jacket” Pocket Moon17:22 Shana Falana “Who We Are” Darkest Light20:42 Dogbreth “Took My Time” Ever Loving23:40 MOURN “Via” Mixtape28:03 Ex-Void “Only One” Only One30:37 HOT SHORTS “Don’t Stop Me If You’ve Heard This One Before” I Understand And I Wish To Continue33:12 The reds, pinks and purples “Anxiety art” Anxiety art35:21 San Cha “Soy Tuya” La Luz de la Esperanza40:44 Banana “Tiny Bones” Post-Grunge Revival44:15 Public Practice “Extra-Ordinary” Disposable & Extra-Ordinary47:52 Water From Your Eyes “Adeleine” Somebody Else’s Song52:05 Amaringo “Sacred” I Woke Up This Morning After a Dream56:46 coastal car “world” are you scared to get happy?59:34 Snail Polish “best you” im worth somthing62:54 Allumette “Somnifuge” Soleil du Gouffre65:56 Cop Circles “Big Business Monkey” Vacation for Hurt69:33 J Camden “Hold Your Breath” The View from Inside the Sun72:13 The Gonks “I’m A Leaker” Five Things You Didn’t Know About The Gonks73:35 Charly Bliss “Supermoon” Supermoon76:39 Telecult “Two Kinds of Escape” Phases78:58 Panoramic “Bug Bites” Spiders // Bug Bites82:27 Mallard “Wubalubadubdub” Believing in Ghosts

We are talking about the first true rap album on the top 500. It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back by Public Enemy. We talk about the incredible sound on the album, Chuck D and his awesome presence and what do we make of Flavor Flav any way? Before we get into the album, we have a couple of special guests to talk about Minnesota United soccer and we once again debate how good is Wonderwall by Oasis as a stadium song. We talk about WHY Aarons was sleeping in a tent and how to buy albums if you aren't just looking for some Pearl Jam at PearlJam.com. We also talk about the Grammys and how the Wknd got screwed and we meet Dirty Granny, a new predictable character. Then we talk about the history of Public Enemy. How did Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Professor Grif, Terminator X and the Bomb Squad all come together to make the rap album that inspired the rest. We talk samples, rapping about not doing drugs and Aaron going to an exotic animal show. Then we talk about one of the greatest samples in R and B history, "Darkest Light" by The Lafayette Afro Rock Band. It has been used by Jay Z, Heavy D and of course, Wreckx-n-Effect. Then Russ drops a bomb on us and leaves us wanting more and Matt shows off his great Marv Albert impression. NEXT WEEK. Show Notes Our guest today brings with her a huge potpourri of emotional tragedy, cosmic learning, and even a surprising taste of laughter. And I say “a surprising taste of laughter” because after Soheila Adelipour tells her story, I guarantee you will be unsure exactly how to respond. The one thing you most certainly will walk away with is a renewed vision of the miraculous power of Love. In 1979, Soheila Adelipour and her family arrived in the United States after escaping the horrors of revolution and persecution in Iran. She and her 5 siblings stuck closely together, worked hard, married, had children, and were blessed with impressive success in New York City. Her brother and “soul-mate” went on to become a highly regarded Neurosurgeon at the Lennox Hospital in Manhattan. But for Soheila all that changed in 2007: her 22-year-old son, Stephan, near graduation at Boston University, was killed in a dorm room fire. THE worst thing any parent could experience. And then only 7 years later in 2013 her sister died after suffered 5 brain surgeries. And only a few months after that Soheila’s beloved brother and “soul mate” died of leukemia. For many of us, these horrific tragedies would be utterly debilitating. But as she expresses in her 5 Star Amazon Book, Dancing to the Darkest Light, Soheila speaks a message on the power of love… even in the very darkest of times. Today's episode brings you a story of terrible hardship and outstanding inspiration. After being discriminated against in her own country for being Jewish, after losing one of her four children and experiencing the loss of a brother and a sister, our guest still finds life to be wonderful and has found many reasons to go on. This is my conversation with the author of "Dancing To The Darkest Light," Soheila Adelipour. Being Jewish, Soheila and her family escaped the volatile situation in Iran in 1979 after the Islamic revolution and settled in New York. She received her bachelor's degree in Business and her master's degree in Art Gallery Management while her first two kids were in diapers! She was involved with the World of Arts and Antiques in New York City, followed by running high-end gift stores. Life was normal with her 4 kids, until a series of unfortunate events started. She lost her second son in Boston in a tragic fire accident. A few years later both her sister and brother passed away after enduring long, torturous and horrific illnesses. Soheila was there every step of the way during those tough times, as she was a 100% match with her young brother, giving him her bone marrow and 60% of her liver hoping to save him. Soheila has established, Stefan Adelipour For Life Foundation in memory of her young son. She organizes fundraising every year on his birthday and helps people in need, regardless of race, color or religion. Soheila Adelipour joins Persian Girl Podcast to discuss her new book, Dancing to the Darkest Light, which follows her journey from fleeing persecution in Iran to the loss of her second son in in a fire in Boston, then, a few years later, the passing of both her sister and brother after enduring long and horrific illnesses. Soheila takes us back to what life was like for her in Iran and amidst the revolution as she moved to America. PGP talks about the negative connotation Persians place behind “mahsabi” and the extremes of religions. She shares her experiences of meeting khastegars (suitors) when moving to America and her thoughts on dating today. Soheila gets into how she dealt with her emotions during the loss of her son and her two siblings. Further into the episode they discuss anti anxiety medication and particularly Soheila’s experience with them. The three discuss the problems with the Persian idea that if you’ve experienced tragedy you should never smile, dress up or dance, and how Soheila, as well as her mother’s positive attitude have gotten them where they are today. They end the episode with the story of Soheila’s mother saving a young girl from a virgin killing as a midwife and another story which was not included in the book. Her book is available on her website and on amazon (it is sold out on amazon but will be back in stock in a few weeks).
