Send us a textIt's been 5 years and 3 months, 283 episodes, and countless guests. All good things must come to an end though. I am honoring the show by taking it back to my very first guests Ken Ballin and Allen Lewis to see how we all have changed over the last 5 years. What's new, what's different, and how our goals have changed. Change is a necessary part of life and so is reflection. Enjoy this look back on the show, the industry, and our lives.Special thanks to all of our sponsors. In this episode of Tiling Connect, we delve into the dynamic world of tiling and explore the intricacies of the latest standards shaping the industry. Our expert guest sheds light on the standards revolutionising how we think about tiling. Fred Gray joined LATICRETE in 1992 after more than 20 years of experience in concreting and building.Working with concrete structures and swimming pools provided an excellent background for the following many decades in the tile and stone industry. As part of his job at LATICRETE, he engaged with industry professionals and networking. The Australian Tile Council played a significant role in this engagement. Regardless of his position in LATICRETE, his work always involved sharing technical knowledge and finding solutions to job site problems, which is also a trait engrained in the ATC. As someone who enjoyed working in the technical field, Fred found it easy to implement training, deliver seminars, write technical documents and articles, review problematic jobs, and encourage compliance. When the ATC proposed the development of the current AS3958, he found a way to balance his work and personal goals.Whether you're a seasoned professional or a DIY enthusiast, this discussion offers valuable insights into achieving flawless results and staying ahead in the ever-evolving world of interior design. Tune in for an engaging conversation that redefines the artistry of tiling. Here are the details if you want to connect with Fred, Laticrete Australia or ATC. I heard a curious thing. Apparently is is a western civilization thing answer the question of "who are you" by listing out your job or something else that you do. Much of the world would start that off by saying I am the son or daughter of so and so. This led me to think about personal identity and especially as a business owner how it can affect us. From wanting to control everything, to advertising everywhere you go, and a company that always needs something, it's hard not to identify as the thing you are always doing. Is that healthy though?Returning friend of the show, Ron Nash, is a husband, father, botanist, artist, photographer, dog trainer, mentor, teacher, avid reader and, oh yeah, the president of Laticrete North America. There is no shortage of things I have witnessed Ron take on over the years through his social media profiles. Some of it is for personal pleasure and some of it is for work but all of it brings him contentment. Listen in to this week's episode of the Floor Academy Podcast while we discuss why there needs to be an off switch on your work identity, how important it is to have something to do besides work, and why you can never stop learning or growing as a human.Check out our sponsorsJohns ManvilleThe International Surfaces EventKronus SoftCheck out our website and storeSupport the show

Matthew Carli is a forward thinking leader at a forward thinking company, Carli is constantly looking for the latest innovations and the insider info he shares may surprise you. For those of you who prefer a synopsis, we first discussed Matthews role as Director of Innovation at Laticrete. Instead of resting on their laurels they constantly scope out the emerging technologies in their industry and have developed many iterations of printable concrete mixes that set quickly and yield very impressive strength results, thus how Laticrete fits into the 3DCP world. Some other areas Laticrete is demonstrating their forward thinking is their free E-Learning platform. We also spoke about why 3DCP is not the solution to affordable housing yet and the key milestones to get there in the near future. Primarily, the current mixes are over engineered to get the best possible results far beyond the requirements set forward for concrete historically. To create a solution that will provide mass affordable housing, engineers will need to start focusing on making a cost effective product. More demand for this mix will decrease the cost inevitably. We also talked about a really cool project that may be on the E-Learning platform soon which was converting a regular desktop 3d printer to facilitate concrete printing. When this becomes available I may try to convert my Prusa MK3 myself. Then we got into parametric design. The more I learn about 3DCP the more I realize how valuable the relationship between 3DCP and parametric design is. I will certainly have to dive deeper into this topic in the future. We spent a bit of time discussing the impacts of COVID-19 on Laticrete. In many areas construction has been permitted at this point so Laticrete is certainly still very much in business, but COVID has transformed the way business is done. Everyone is pretty much working from home using Microsoft teams to collaborate and get their work done. Matthew said that Laticrete was able to adapt to this situation without halting too much of their productive activities. I look forward to seeing how Laticretes developments contribute to the 3DCP space in the future, you can expect them to continue experimenting with printable fast set concrete and are already cementing themselves as a leader in construction materials. Michael Stone is the author of the book “Markup and Profit” He has been helping contractors with their businesses in a big way since he wrote his book in 1998, so I was delighted when he agreed to record an interview with me! We had a great conversation on how to work up consistently profitable estimates. One of the most important things you can do for your estimating process is to develop a system. I love how he brought out that you need to have an error factor built in so that your profit is not wiped out! Stop worrying about what others are charging! Figure out your own numbers! Figure out these 3 things; What is the Job Costing you? What are your Overhead expenses? Your desired Profit must be built into the price. Remember, you have a choice, do you want to be profitable or do you want to be competitive? Industry News; Sponsored by the NTCA Have you attended an Industry-wide event? I want to encourage you to attend one of these events. Attending these events should be a priority for contractors! It’s at these events that you will meet the people you want to be associating with! The key is to be Social! Make plans to meet up early in the event, you will meet people you need to meet inside the tile industry. In my introduction, I talked about the importance of hanging around the right people. These events are the best place to shake some hands and make some real-life connections. Tile Money Tip; Sponsored by Laticrete This is a clip from the business incubator Laticrete sponsored last Sept. --- I chose this clip because it’s very real, I love how Ron said “if you find the success you will find failure along the way” Friends, we are all in a similar boat, we all fail at times! The difference between true failure and success is that the winners embrace their failures, they learn their lesson fast! I truly hope you enjoyed today’s episode, I hope I’ve given you something to think about and some helpful advice you can apply in your business. In next week's episode, you will hear more of my interview with Michael Stone and he will be talking about selling your work. Stay Profitable Tile Friends! Episode #59 In today’s episode I talk to you about confidence and its importance to you the business owner! Confidence is believing in your product, your abilities and what you are selling. 1:50 My LACK of Confidence Experience 3:45 Confidence is needed for Influence. You sell with Influence which comes from Confidence. Don’t make the Mistake of Trying to Convince people to Believe what you’re Saying. True Influence is when People believe that You Believe What you’re saying is True! 8:50 Manufacturer News Sponsored by Laticrete In Episode #58 for the Industry News I talked to you about the Dangers of Silica and how NTCA has their Online University set up to train your employees on subjects like this. Today I want to elaborate on this because Laticrete is Leading the Pack in Manufacturers when it comes to dealing with this problem. “Laticrete has been working diligently for years on the health and safety aspects of our bagged products. We’ve hired an independent industrial hygienist to evaluate key skus in our line and we have a report* that shows that they are fully compliant with OSHA’s new workplace standards. Products representative of the Tile and Stone Installation System, Masonry Veneer Installation System and the Specialty Products Division were tested. Key products included 257 TITANIUM, TRI-LITE, MVIS Premium Pointing Mortar, and NXT. In addition we have added the new MultiMax Lite and PermaColor Select to the mix. MultiMax Lite and Titanium are completely Silica free. We are working hard to make our products even safer, but still strongly believe that PPE should be used at all times on the job. Protect yourself from all possible exposure. We care about your health.” *Here is the link for the report https://cdn.laticrete.com/~/media/files/innovation-and-impact/osha-silica-dust/report-on-overall-sampling-results.ashx?la=en&vs=1&d=20171117T142520Z&hash=F0C24E59E927EF358C4A38D6B43237A9117AA607 11:00 People buy things All the Time because the person who sold it to them Believed in it! Email me at tilemoney@gmail.com for access to my Media Kit 2:55 Online Phone Sales Techniques and Questions You need to get used to being rejected regularly, but never lose your enthusiasm or get discouraged. Every ‘no’, gets you closer to someone saying ‘yes’, according to YOUR TERMS! You are selling yourself and an initial phone conversation is the First Impression which you cannot get back. 9:45 Question number one: “May I ask you a few questions to get to know you a little bit better and determine if we are a good fit for each other?” What’s the point of this question? 1. You don’t want the phone conversation to seem like an interrogation. 2. You are subconsciously indicating to the potential client that YOU are in control of the sales conversation and that you’re to be taken seriously. 11:15 Question number Two: “Could you tell me a bit about the scope of your project? What would you like to have done?” You’re going to want to listen closely. Most people are going to really TALK here. “Mirroring” repeat back to them what you heard them say. This is going to signal to them that you are ready to LISTEN to their needs and that you understand what they want to be done. 12:40 INDUSTRY NEWS Sponsored by the NTCA Recently on FB, there's been some talk about safety at work, or lack of it. A thread started about lung safety and the danger of Silica. It's 2019 and it should be obvious that we should all be wearing masks. Are you taking unnecessary risks? Worse yet are you asking your employees to take unnecessary risks? Do you train your people about the dangers and risks? How would you and where to start? NTCA has the Online University that does just this, close to 100 lessons, this is a combination of lessons for the Business Owner as well as for the employee. A few Topics Include; Health and Wellness at Work. Construction Safety Introduction to Cleaning Agents and Sealer These courses are accessible on phones, computers, tablets. I recommend having your employees study these NTCA UNIVERSITY courses, you could set up a rewards system for employees who take it seriously. How should you install a recessed shower niche? Steve White from SRW Contracting gives you great tips. Here’s the breakdown 1. Don’t add a recessed niche on an exterior wall because you can’t insulate behind it 2. Buy a pre-made shower niche from Schluter, Wedi, or Laticrete 3. If you build a shower niche Steve recommends doing it with Wedi building panels 4. When designing a shower niche you can frame it with pencil trim, bullnose edging, and metal edging 5. If you want a unique look inside the niche you can use 3/8” tempered glass Listen to the entire show to get all of Steve’s tips. Susie recently installed a new faucet but it has a drain leak. She’d like to figure out how to stop this leak without calling a plumber. One of my biggest tips is to make sure the extension tube is 1 1/2 inches down in the P-trap and the plastic washer between the P-trap/extension tube is positioned the right way. Also, if the slip nut is cross threaded then the P-trap will leak no matter what. I actually have a great tutorial over on Home Repair Tutor that I forget to mention in the show http://www.homerepairtutor.com/how-to-replace-a-bathroom-faucet/ The video walks you through this installation step-by-step and has tons of details. Here’s the link to join our private Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/hrtcommunity/ Today’s Quick Tip is about Hydro Ban. Hydro Ban is a great way to waterproof shower surrounds. You can brush Hydro Ban onto cement board and create a waterproof shower before tiling.
