Welcome to The Money Trench. In this episode, Mark is joined by author, journalist and fellow podcaster, Miranda Sawyer. Exploring themes from her new book, Uncommon People: Britpop and Beyond in 20 Songs, the conversation digs into Britpop's enduring legacy, moving past the Blur vs. Oasis rivalry into stories about Pulp, Suede, and more, while also examining how the era's stars coped with sudden fame. Miranda also reflects on her journey into music journalism, from landing her first role at Smash Hits to writing for iconic magazines like Q and Loaded. We discuss the rise and continued importance of music journalism, the challenges of working in indie music as a woman, and why the prominence of bands in the alternative scene has faded. Marty Wilde (born Reginald Leonard Smith) is an English singer and songwriter who was among the first generation of British pop stars to imitate American rock'n'roll. He began performing under the name Reg Patterson until he was spotted by impresario Larry Parnes who subsequently changed his name to Wilde. From mid 1958 to the end of 1959, Marty was one of the leading British rock singers, along with Tommy Steele and Cliff Richard. His backing group, the Wildcats featured Big Jim Sullivan on lead guitar, and Brian Locking and Brian Bennett (drums) who later joined The Shadows. Marty appeared regularly on TV and his fan base grew exponentially. He met and married Joyce who was one of The Vernons Girls who also appeared as TV show regulars. The courtship was highly public but, after the marriage, Wilde's popularity as a teen idol declined. Marty moved partly into all-round entertainment, appearing in musicals such as the West End production of Bye Bye Birdie and films. He enjoyed success as a songwriter in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He has written countless songs for other recording artists including Tom Jones, Status Quo, Lulu, Adam Faith, Joe Brown, The Casuals, Mac & Katie Kissoon, Kim Wilde, Roxanne Wilde, Peter Shelley, Hot Chocolate and Capricorn In the early 1970s, Marty reinvented himself, changing his music style to Glam Rock and became known as 'Zappo'. The singles he released under this name never charted and he reverted back to Marty Wilde shortly after. Later on, as songwriter and/or record producer, he masterminded a string of 1980s hits for his daughter Kim Wilde. His son, Ricki Wilde also gained some notice in the music industry, working mainly in promotion and A&R. Today Marty Wilde is 84 years old. Like many of his contemporaries, he continues to perform with nostalgia tours in the UK and beyond and is just as passionate about making music as he ever was. He was appointed MBE for Services to Popular Music in the UK 2017 New Year's Honours List and celebrates a rare feat – securing eight consecutive decades of British singer/songwriter success on the Official Singles and Albums Charts Marty joins us this week to look back over his career and regales us with many 'behind the scenes' stories. If you'd like to learn more about Marty Wilde and songs like "Endless Sleep" "Donna" and "A Teenager in Love" head for his website here I hope you enjoy Marty Wilde's lifestory.

27. The Animals‘Animal Tracks'In the early 60s, a hugely important British band, from Newcastle, would form. The Animals were part of the culturally phenomenal British Invasion of the US. Along with the likes of The Beatles, The Kinks, The Hollies and more, they brought their British Pop over to the States and left their mark. But one aspect of The Animals was very different to their counterparts; their music had strong influences from already popularised American music styles. From Blues to R&B, Rock N Roll to Motown and Gosepl to Doo-Wop - The Animals left their mark on both sides of the pond by incorporating these different genres into one hybrid style and executed their British-American music to perfection.Laz & Felipe take a different approach this episode and go through some of The Animals' greatest hits from the ‘The Singles Plus' album and talk about the differing styles, influences, lyrical meanings and genres they hear from song to song! (In this way, the episode playlist has been structured like so: 1) Animals song 2) Original version of that song [where available] 3) Other earlier or notable covers of the song [where available] 4) Stylistic examples of other songs that we hear)LONG LIVE ROCK ‘N' ROLL - Follow the Podcast on Social Media: https://linktr.ee/longlivernrpod- Get in touch and/or leave us a review: longliverocknrollpodcast@gmail.com- Episode 27 Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3aLQEOzUCf13Ww2H75Y9nz?si=c3406aa0675e4d29- Portishead - S.O.S (ABBA Cover): Portishead - SOS- Podcast Music by GeriArt, NaturesEye, astrofreq, Twisterium from Pixabay- Podcast Art by Ross Davidson (@ross_feelshame)

Freedom Girls: Voicing Femininity in 1960s British Pop (Oxford University Press, 2021) by Alexandra M. Apolloni is about how the vocal performances of girl singers in 1960s Britain defined—and sometimes defied—ideas about what it meant to be a young woman. Apolloni takes a case study approach to tease out many different strands of the nature of femininity in 1960s Britain, but she tackles much more than gender in this book. She also considers larger public conversations about authenticity, race, sexuality, and class which dictated and shaped the careers and the reception of the group of singers she writes about. In what is almost a group biography, Apolloni writes about Sandie Shaw, Cilla Black, Lulu, Dusty Springfield, Millie Small, Marianne Faithfull and P.P. Arnold. They are Black and white, many come from working-class backgrounds, most were born in Britain, and all were very young when they first gained national attention. While most of them have an international following, their careers were rooted in the U.K., but the music they sang was fundamentally influenced by the music of Black Americans. Apolloni carefully separates and interrogates the maelstrom of identity, music, political agendas, and cultural meanings that surround these women. The performances she analyzes reveal the historical and contemporary connections between voice, social mobility, and musical authority, and demonstrate how singers used voice to navigate the boundaries of race, class, and gender. Kristen M. Turner is a lecturer in the music and honors departments at North Carolina State University. Arnold. Phil & Jake are joined by returning friend (and author) Eirinie Carson to rank the British Pop group Spice Girls, the outfits that the British call shell suits, and British food on the List of Every Damn Thing.Follow Eirinie on Instagram (@eirinieeee) and Twitter (@Eirineee), and read her columns on Mother Mag. Her upcoming book The Dead Are Gods will be published by Melville House. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: The Spice Girls are, of course: Victoria Adams aka Victoria Beckham aka Posh Spice, Geri Halliwell aka Ginger Spice, Melanie C aka Sporty Spice, Mel B aka Scary Spice and Emma Bunton aka Baby Spice. Was there a sixth Spice Girl? Kind of. Michelle Stephenson was briefly part of the group that would go on to become the Spice Girls. At the time of this writing, we can't provide a link to Lady Camden from Ru Paul's Drag Race because it would risk spoiling the season finale for ourselves. Lucy Pinder is, as Wikipedia tells us, a British actress, TV personality and former glamour model. Shes also joins Eirinie for going on "holiday" (aka vacation). Phil at some point got it into his head that she was a right-wing ideologue and it broke the spell she had over him. It's probably for the best, even if it wasn't true! We talk about the Spice Girls songs “Wannabe” and “2 Become 1”. The video featuring them in leather outfits is for the song "Say You'll Be There". 2 Live Crew are filthy Miami rappers who legally laid the foundation for all filthy rappers that followed. Mogul did an excellent series about them. We get into a little Chubby Checker discussion, including his songs “The Twist” and “Let's Twist Again”. Phil tells us about Don't Knock the Twist , is a movie that features Checker with a lot of associated acts including Dee Dee Sharp, who sings Mashed Potato time, one of Phil's favorites. Phil likes anything where the song tells you "It's the latest" or "it's the greatest" and Mashed Potato time does both. Robbie Williams is the cheeky chappie from Stoke. Harry Styles is Hazza? Dolly Parton is the Backwoods Barbie. Hank Williams is the Hillbilly Shakespeare. Phil mentions the 2013 Morgan Spurlock 3-D documentary about One Direction, This Is Us but then gets confused as to whether it exists or not. It does. Phil mentions the youtube video "A Scouser Tries The Wigan Kebab and Smack Barm Pea Wet" in which a guy from Liverpool travels 17 miles to Wigan to enjoy Smack Barm Pea Wet which is a roll with a potato that's been batter dipped and deep fried, served with the liquid that peas sit in.  Turkey Twizzlers were a UK meat product that used to be served to children at schools until celebrity chef Jamie Olive raised a fuss about them. Bovril is a beef broth concentrate, formerly known as Johnston's Fluid Beef. Phil remembers a guy saying it's served hot in a disposable cup. Kit-Kat is a candy that originates in England but really hit its stride in Japan where they make many variant flavors and generally appreciate the brand. Lucozade is a sports drink, roughly akin to Gatorade that was originally sold at pharmacies. Kebab stands are places where you can buy kebabs. Phil said we don't really have them in America but it's not really true. In his old neighborhood in Queens they were all over. Phil mentions a shocking ad for breakfast in a can he saw in a lad mag. He was unable to find images because when people are preserving and scanning lad mags, their priority is the photos of Lucy Pinder or Lucy Collett and then when that's done they'll eventually get around to the horrifying pictures of canned sausage and eggs. The product was probably Hunger Breaks' All Day Breakfast. Rock Against Trafficking: Saving Lives Through the Power of Music with Gary Miller Rock Against Trafficking is a non-profit 501c3 charity driven by seasoned music industry veterans who are taking action to end human trafficking on a global scale. With growing awareness and support from the media and public officials, we continue to see an increase in anti-trafficking task force initiatives worldwide — many businesses are providing training to their employees to help identify traffickers and victims in their tracks. With over 600 rescues so far this year, our network of affiliates is hard at work but we need your help! Gary Miller is a British Pop and Rock music producer, songwriter, composer, and guitarist. Gary worked for the London production house Stock Aitken Waterman as producer and songwriter and was later part of the Metrophonic team. He is best known for his work with David Bowie for the album Heathen, Katy Perry, Donna Summer, Lionel Richie, Kylie Minogue, Bananarama, and Simply Red. Miller started his music career during the 1980s as a guitarist, touring with Sir Elton John and Nik Kershaw all across Europe and the US. In 1989, Miller was Musical Director for Deon Estus on George Michael's Faith Tour. During his long-spanning career, he was also MD and guitarist for the 30-year reunion tour for British Pop duo Bros, twin brothers Matt and Luke Goss, in 2017. The Bros Live 2017 Tour filled The O2 arena in London two nights in a row. Miller additionally founded the Rock Against Trafficking foundation which records and releases album projects to raise money and awareness to fight human trafficking. The first Rock Against Trafficking album "Set Them Free", which was produced by Miller, features Police and Sting covers performed by various well-known artists, such as the rock band Journey, Heart, Carlos Santana, Slash, Julian Lennon, Ellis Hall, and En Vogue. Most recently Gary has achieved a #1 record across several UK charts with Rozalla's “I Feel It Slipping Away”. Because our guest, international male model Joseph Culp (IG: model_joseph_culp) picked it, that's why. Joe helps Jenn, Samantha, and Sadie sift through the three brothers in this 36th episode of ‘You Should See The Other Guy,' But mostly, we talk about Bart the Bear, what Facebook would look like during the Civil War, Brad Pitt's failed journalism career, the British Pop invasion, and more. Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon presents revered British pop icon, Peter Noone (recorded at the end of 2019). Peter discusses his extensive yearly touring schedule, being a music enthusiast, the beginnings of Herman's Hermits, songwriting, The Beatles & more, finding their place in a crowded radio marketplace, lyrics then and now, personal choice, working on Broadway, The Tremblers, a Farewell tour, his love of music, Casablanca Records, Neil Bogart, Tom Petty, Jimmy Page & John Paul Jones playing on Herman's Hermit songs and much much more. On getting started in music: "I started off as an enthusiast of music. I bought records and went to see live music. I knew lots of people who were in groups that played in their sister's attic and the little local nightclubs. One day, I found myself in a band where I was not just and enthusiast, but a participant." On a possible Farewell Tour: "I'm more like Mick Jagger. Arrogantly believing that I can pull it off for at least another ten years... Music is my hobby. When I hang up the phone with you, I'm going to play some music. That's what I do. When I'm in my car driving to a gig, I listen to music. Some people listen to the world news. I don't. I listen to music. And enjoy it, and smile and sing along and dislike and love and all of those things. So, why would I want to stop doing that?"  On Neil Bogart: "I don't know how good he was at business, but he was a great character." On Coronation Street, he jokingly says, "I was in it in 1961 and it's still the number one show in England even without me in it."  Get your MITCH MERCH here: https://loudtrax.com/Mitch  Twitter: @mitchlafon Instagram: @mitch_lafon Subscribe to Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon for exclusive content and interviews. WARNING: this episode of Talk Art contains strong language! Russell & Robert meet legendary English artist Caroline Coon. We discuss 50 years of painting in Ladbroke Grove, feminism, her longterm political activism, the importance of being socially conscious, decriminalising sex work, growing up in Kent, punk rock, managing The Clash & writing for Melody Maker in the 1970s. We explore the influence of artist Pauline Boty who helped found British Pop art, and was the only female painter in the movement, inheriting Boty's paints after her early death at the age of 28, and we consider the lasting power of painting but also ceramics and artworks made by hand. Her first solo exhibition ‘Caroline Coon: The Great Offender' was held in 2018 at The Gallery Liverpool, followed by her current first solo London exhibition at TRAMPS (running until 22nd December 2019) curated by artist Peter Doig & curator Parinaz Magadassi. The works span the 1980’s to 2019, demonstrating how Coon, in her explicit social and political commentary, has made art that rebels against binary conceptions of gender and challenges orthodoxy in ways that are particularly relevant today. The exhibition travels to TRAMPS New York, in Spring 2020. Art historian Maria Elena Buszek, in her catalogue essay for the exhibition, writes: “Artist, writer and activist Caroline Coon is one of the towering ‘disappeared’ women of her generation; she was a catalyst and witness to some of the most critical moments of art, music, and politics, only to see her participation muted and marginalised, and her male contemporaries canonised.” Learn more at www.TrampsLtd.com and www.CarolineCoon.com Special thanks to Martin Green. As with the pop cultural development in the US, psychedelia really becomes big in the UK around 1966-67 and many of the R&B and beat band would be turned on by psychedelia and completely transform their style during this period of time. The early British psychedelia is usually very pop oriented with strong emphasis on melodies but would soon develop into more heavy psych and progressive with more complex song structures, as we will hear in later episodes. This is the beginning of a whole range of styles that would be dominating the rock music in the 70s. Born in Bradford, artist David Hockney's work has been shown around the globe. Now 75, his recent exhibition at London's Royal Academy, 'The Bigger Picture' had people queuing round the block to look at his latest collection of Yorkshire landscapes - epic in scale and ambition. Accompanying his paintings, were a collection of pictures he'd drawn on an I-pad - still experimenting in his eighth decade. He launched on to the British Pop art scene in the sixties, left London to live in America and he enjoys a creative career which has seen him at the forefront on art and artistic technology. The New Elizabethans have been chosen by a panel of leading historians, chaired by Lord (Tony) Hall, Chief Executive of London's Royal Opera House. The panellists were Dominic Sandbrook, Bamber Gasgoigne, Sally Alexander, Jonathan AGar, Maria Misra and Sir Max Hastings. They were asked to choose: "Men and women whose actions during the reign of Elizabeth II have had a significant impact on lives in these islands and/or given the age its character, for better or worse".
