Strange stories are often used to fill gaps in human knowledge. But why do people love bizarre explanations for the unexplained? Dr. Lydia Kang and Nate Pedersen look to answer this in their new book, Pseudoscience: An Amusing History of Crackpot Ideas and Why We Love Them. In today's episode, Kang and Pedersen speak with NPR's Ayesha Rascoe about some of the most popular conspiracies, being careful about which ones to indulge in, and the dangers of being misinformed. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

From the authors of Quackery, a visual and narrative history of popular ideas, phenomena, and widely held beliefs disproven by science. From the easily disproved to the wildly speculative, to  straight-up hucksterism, Pseudoscience is a romp through much more than bad science—it's a light-hearted look into why we insist on believing in things such as Big Foot, astrology, and the existence of aliens. Did you know, for example, that you can tell a person's future by touching their butt? Rumpology. It's a thing, but not really. Or that Stanley Kubrick made a fake moon landing film for the US government? Except he didn't. Or that spontaneous human combustion is real? It ain't, but it can be explained scientifically.   Pseudoscience is a wild mix of history, pop culture, and good old fashioned science–that not just entertains, but sheds a little light on why we all love to believe in things we know aren't true.  Website: https://brandyschillace.com/peculiar/ Newsletter: http://eepurl.com/ixJJ2Y Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/PeculiarBookClub/membership Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@PeculiarBookClub/streams Bluesky: @peculiarbookclub.bsky.social Twitter: @peculiarBC Facebook: facebook.com/groups/peculiarbooksclub Instagram: @thepeculiarbookclub

For those of us born in the 70's Star Wars was undoubtedly a huge part of our childhood.  However, as Asian Americans, it was nearly impossible to see ourselves in the galaxy George Lucas created. This finally started to change in the late 2010s with some great characters in the films Rogue One and The Last Jedi. This summer, Disney+ came out with the Acolyte starring not one but TWO Asian actors as leads! We finally get to see an Asian Jedi as a main character! I couldn't resist doing an episode about season one of the series.  Joining me in the conversation are two bonafide Star Wars experts.  They are both Asian American authors who have written parts of the Star Wars canon of books.  We have returning guest Mike Chen who wrote Brotherhood in 2022, and Dr. Lydia Kang who wrote The High Republic: Cataclysm in 2023 (both Mike and Lydia have written other Star Wars short stories and numerous other books)! It was so fun nerding out with these two super knowledgeable and down-to-earth people! This ep is another High Republic review/overview and it's the adult novel for Phase 2, Wave 2; Cataclysm by Lydia Kang. In this sequel to Convergence, the tensions between E'ronoh & Eiram worsen as The Path Of The Open Hand become more aggressive, all while Axel Greylark is imprisoned, leading to the devastating Night Of Sorrow! In this episode, Mike gives his spoiler-free thoughts in the beginning, before reading the crawl and giving some minor plot details and thoughts on characters & themes. He then gives a minor spoiler warning and gives more detailed thoughts along with reading the blurb/publishers summary, before giving a final spoiler warning and providing his thoughts on the whole book - at the end he gives an overview of the whole book's plot and what it means for the future of The High Republic! Cataclysm is written by Lydia Kang, was released April 4th 2023 and takes place in Wave 2 of Phase 2 in The High Republic (approx. 150 years before Phase 1); 382 BBY, and is a sequel to Convergence. Phase 2 book reviews were released; Path Of Deceit on 7th Jan, Quest For Hidden City on February 14th, Convergence on March 18th and The Battle Of Jedha on April 22nd, with the first volume/wave of phase 2 comics being tacked in episode 126 (out May 13th 2023). Mike has tackled every piece of the content from Phase 1 of the High Republic in 2021-2022. The first was Light Of The Jedi on March 2021 and the last was Midnight Horizon on November '22. For Starlight Stories, check episode 113 - all episodes, including comic episodes, are in a YouTube playlist, found here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcO1Ib_BGD8bsER_4sqfhNFfd5aoWT_YX In episode 130, Mike delves into THE BLADE OF BARDOTTA'S ORIGIN STORY! This is the 4-part mini-series surrounding Porter Engle; an Ikkrukkian Jedi who lives throughout the High Republic (around 300 years old during Phase 1). In Phase 1, he is a talented cook with a dark past so in Phase 2, we get to delve into The Blade's past and find out about the Barash Vow, while along the way meeting Porter's sister and seeing more of the Republic during it's more exploratory age!
