Carpenters Workshop Gallery has redefined the art and design landscape, making it a beacon for sustainability, community building and the continuous evolution of artistic expression. In this episode, Danielle Radojcin speaks to co-founder Loïc Le Gaillard and the designer Harry Nuriev about challenging traditional design boundaries. Founded in 2006 by Loïc Le Gallaird and Julien Lombrail, Carpenters Workshop Gallery has challenged the conventional gallery model, encouraging visitors to immerse themselves deeply in the art, fostering a connection that transcends mere observation.Since then, each of its  global expansions—from London to Paris, and New York to Los Angeles, serves not just as a space for displaying art but as a hub for emotional investment and innovation. The latest addition, Ladbroke Hall in West London, epitomises this philosophy. Having featured a broad spectrum of creatives, including furniture design icon Wendell Castle, artist Yinka Shonibare and jewellery designer Michele Lamy, it stands as a flagship space promoting extensive engagement and exploration in the arts.Harry Nuriev, the visionary behind Crosby Studios, is known for his transformative design philosophy that integrates art, architecture, and fashion into everyday life. His work, celebrated for challenging traditional boundaries, showcases how design can reflect and alter our perception of contemporary society.  He has exhibited several times with Carpenters Workshop Gallery, as well as partnering on projects with the likes of Balenciaga, Nike and Liam Gillick.Harry and Loïc join Danielle on this episode to talk about how their collaborative efforts at Carpenters Workshop Gallery contribute to the continuous evolution of artistic expression.Image: Chair 3, by Harry Nuriev, via Carpenters Workshop Gallery

Renowned curator, and a trailblazer of “usefulness” in art, Alistair Hudson is the forthcoming Artistic & Scientific Chairman of ZKM (Center for Art & Media in Karlsruhe.Alistair Hudson grabbed everybody's attention when - with Adam Sutherland - he turned Grizedale Arts, an art institution in Northwest England's Lake District, into a hotspot of artistic discussion and production between 2004 and 2015. A directorship followed, at the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art. There he developed the idea of the useful museum, opening up questions on how the museum ‘can be used' otherwise; simultaneously reflecting on a wide collection as well as new commissions and projects. In collaboration with the artist Tania Bruguera the Van Abbemuseum and Queens Museum, he got involved in the exhibition "Museum of Arte Util", later undertaking the role of co-directorship of the Association de Arte Útil that resulted from the exhibition. This project has become a repository of artistic activities that propose new uses for art, work on a 1:1 scale, and embrace artistic thinking to respond to urgencies, in short, all things dear to Ahali Conversations so far. Today's episode is all about avoiding the trap of that old heap of coffee grounds and lemon peels: Artistic Bitterness. I investigate how artists of history, like Carmen Herrera, Louise Bourgeois and Laurie Simmons, persevered and dealt with feeling like their work was ignored by the art scene. I also read some quotes from the eternally wise Enrique Martinez Celaya. Also, why am I always bringing up Lawrence of Arabia? I've never even watched the movie! Also, I hate discouraging art stats! Come along with me as I discover the secret keys to the Non-Bitterness Kingdom and attempt to quantify, label and identify them for fellow and future seekers. The images featured in Splashes (RVB Press, 2018) are characteristic of Gabriel Jones’ approach to making images by capturing the “backdrop”, things behind the original subject. There is a performative element to this series in that Gabriel invited friends to pretend to pose at a party, he focused his camera towards them but not on them which allowed him to actually photography the situations taking place in the background of the scene. The photographs were taken with early cellphone cameras, and have mostly been reframed to show only the situations and compositions that sparked the artist’s interest the most. This tight cropping resulted in highly pixelated images, and Jones applied some retouching techniques to further accentuate the strangeness of the scenes in his collections. Gabriel photographed the album cover The Suburbs, for Canadian Indie-Rock band Arcade Fire. The album won the 2012 Grammy Award for Best Record Packaging, and 2011Album of the Year. In 2010 and 2014, Jones curated an exhibition called The Pseudonym Project New York / Paris. A series of established and emerging artists– such as Robert Barry, Liam Gillick, Fouad Bouchoucha, Melanie Bonajo, Joseph Marzolla and Jonathan Monk–were invited to create new pieces under pseudonyms. Their real names were disclosed at the end of the exhibition. His photographs have been exhibited in venues such as Photo España Festival; Paris Photo; Galerie Le Château d’Eau, Toulouse; as well as Galleries Michèle Didier, Paris; Priska Juschka Fine Art, New York and Bugdahn und Kaimer, Dusseldorf. Bakargiev'in deyişi ile:"14. Her biri hayatlarınızda bir güne tekabül edebilir."Adrian Villar Rojas, The Most Beautiful Of All Mothers, Troçki Evi (fotoğraf: ©İKSV)Hrant Dink Vakfı'ndan Galata Rum İlkokulu'na uzanan bienal, hafızaya ve acıya da dokunuyor. Geçtiğimiz günlerde sanatçı Pelin Tan, Artık İşler Kollektifi ve e-flux editörü Anton Vidokle tarafından imzalanan bir mektup, son aylarda artan şiddet olayları üzerine bienale katılan sanatçıları "barış için müdahaleye" davet etti. Anna Boghiguian, The Salt Traders, Galata Rum İlkokulu (fotoğraf: ©İKSV)1 Kasım'a kadar devam edecek bienal süresince kentin genelindeki pek çok galeri, müze ve kültür mekânı da paralel etkinlikler düzenliyor.

Gillick is a New York and London-based artist who emerged in the 1990s in the midst of paradigmatic political and cultural change. In the past two decades, he has developed a highly influential artistic practice around a discursive model that complicates object production and raises key social questions. Solo exhibitions include The Museum of Modern Art, 2003; Palais de Tokyo, 2005; Witte de With, 2008. Group exhibitions include the documenta X 1997; Guggenheim Museum, 2004; 53rd Venice Biennale, 2009.

Liam Gillick. That is right, the man whose imagination can take him anywhere. A transparent master of the question of Modernity? Cat lover? Designer/author/theorist/artist/architect? The son Donald Judd never wanted? Enigma cloaked in riddle? Relational Aesthetic celebrity? All these things and more... We at Bad at Sports try and get to the bottom of Liam's magic in this hour-long interview. The last element in Liam Gillick's 4 part global retrospective, "Three perspectives and a short scenario" will run through January 10th at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art.  Accompanying that exhibition, Gillick has produced "The one hundred and sixty-third floor: Liam Gillick Curates the Collection," which is also be on view.Liam Gillick emerged in the early 1990s as part of a re-energized British art scene, producing a sophisticated body of work ranging from his signature "platform" sculptures -- architectural structures made of aluminum and colored Plexiglas that facilitate or complicate social interaction -- to wall paintings, text sculptures, and published texts that reflect on the increasing gap between utopian idealism and the actualities of the world. His work joins that of generational peers such as Rirkrit Tiravanija and Philippe Parreno in defining what critic Nicholas Bourriaud described as "relational aesthetics," an approach that emphasizes the shifting social role and function of art at the turn of the millennium. Gillick's work has had a profound impact on a contemporary understanding of how art and architecture influence, and are themselves influenced by, interpersonal communication and interactions in the public sphere. This exhibition is presented in association with the Witte de With in Rotterdam, Kunsthalle Zurich, and the Kunstverein in Munich. It is the most significant and comprehensive exhibition of Gillick's work in an American museum to date, comprising a major site-specific installation in the gallery ceiling as well as a presentation of his design and published works, and a film documenting projects from the entirety of his career. The MCA is the only American venue for the exhibition.
