For several months, Japan has been moving in a more nationalist and conservative direction. The shift has been fuelled by economic challenges at home and growing regional tensions with China. The country's new ultra-conservative prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, is expected to accelerate this agenda, with plans to tighten immigration policies and strengthen Japan's defence posture. A report by Adam Hancock, Alexis Bregere and Mélodie Sforza.

Japan is one of the few countries that still use the death penalty. The most recent execution took place in June 2025, when a man was hanged for killing nine people back in 2017. Japan and the United States are the only G7 countries to use capital punishment – a measure supported by the vast majority of Japanese citizens. FRANCE 24's Ayana Nishikawa, Alexis Bregere, Mélodie Sforza and Justin McCurry report.

Milanese culinary history reflects the city's position as a prosperous crossroads in northern Italy, where fertile Po Valley agriculture met centuries of foreign rule, trade, and innovation. Rooted in Lombardy's rich plains, lakes, and alpine foothills, the cuisine emphasizes hearty, comforting ingredients like rice (introduced via ancient trade routes and cultivated extensively since Roman times), butter over olive oil, beef and veal from abundant cattle farming, dairy products, and slow-cooked preparations suited to cooler climates. From Celtic and Roman foundations—where Gauls and Insubrians coexisted with settlers who brought lamb and irrigation techniques—Milanese food evolved through medieval communes, Renaissance courts under the Visconti and Sforza families, and foreign dominations that layered influences: Spanish Habsburg rule from 1535 introduced spices and techniques, Austrian control in the 18th-19th centuries sparked debates over dishes like cotoletta, and broader European exchanges refined aristocratic tastes.Iconic dishes emerged from this blend of peasant practicality and bourgeois elegance. The cotoletta alla milanese—a breaded and fried veal cutlet—has ancient origins, documented as early as 1134 in records from Sant'Ambrogio Basilica listing "lombolos cum panitio" (breaded loins) served to canons. A 19th-century patriotic dispute with Austrians claiming it derived from Wiener schnitzel was settled when Marshal Radetzky, in a letter, confirmed that no such dish existed in Austria, affirming its Milanese primacy. Risotto alla milanese, the golden saffron-infused rice, carries a beloved legend from 1574: during the construction of Milan's Duomo, a Flemish glassmaker's assistant nicknamed "Zafferano" (saffron) for using the spice to tint stained glass was pranked by colleagues who added it to wedding rice as a joke—the vibrant, flavorful result became a sensation. While the tale persists, the first printed recipes appear in the early 1800s, such as in Giovanni Felice Luraschi's 1829 cookbook, solidifying its status as a refined staple often enriched with bone marrow and served as a luxurious side.Ossobuco alla milanese ("bone with a hole"), braised cross-cut veal shanks prized for their marrow, dates to the late 19th century as a winter comfort food from humble kitchens, though marrow-based braises echo medieval traditions. Traditionally paired with risotto alla milanese for a complete piatto unico (one-dish meal), it embodies rustic depth with the bright contrast of gremolata. Other hallmarks include panettone, the dome-shaped Christmas sweet bread with origins in the 15th century (legend ties it to a 15th-century baker's improvisation), cassoeula (a pork and cabbage stew), minestrone alla milanese, and mondeghili (Milanese meatballs repurposing leftovers). Butter, rice over pasta, and long-simmered stews distinguish it from southern Italian olive oil and tomato-driven fare. At the same time, influences from the Austrian (breaded meats), Spanish (saffron via trade), and French (refined techniques) periods elevated it beyond peasant roots.Milan's cuisine balances simplicity and sophistication, shaped by its role as a commercial hub and fashion/finance capital—today's trattorias preserve these traditions amid global influences, making dishes like risotto and ossobuco timeless emblems of Milanese identity.Chef Walter writes the content for this episodeMore PodcastsChef Walters Cooking SchoolProduced by SimVal MediaSubscribe Free to the FK Newsletter
"Around the middle of the fifteenth century, not so long after the first written references in Europe to cards of any kind, an artist named Bonifacio Bembo painted a set of unnamed and unnumbered cards for the Visconti family of Milan", Origins of Tarot, Seventy Eight Degrees of Wisdom: A Tarot Journey to Self Awareness by Rachel Pollack Did you know that the roots of tarot have their beginnings in the north of Italy at the height of the Renaissance. The first playing cards emerged in the courts of the noble Milanese families and became a popular card game for entertainment and play. The Visconti Sforza, Bolognese Tarochini and the Minchiate Tarot cards were commissioned by the aristocratic families to be hand painted and designed by expert artisans. Played as a game called 'carte da trionfe' the tarot was purely a trick playing game in the height of the Renaissance. Today I discuss the Visconti and Sforza alliance in Milan, Cosimo de Medici patronising philosophers to transcribe the Corpus Hermeticum, the time of Renaissance Magic, the shift in art and philosophy, the move toward the mystical traditions and how the tarot eventually evolved into that of cartomancy, esoteric practice via secret societies and occult practitioners in England and France in the 18th and 19th centuries. To now be tethered to the mystery traditions and used as form of divination, fortune telling and spiritual practise. I also share a few personal revelations about the tarot system along the way. And lastly if you are in Italy it turns out there is some serendipity to this episode I discovered while writing my show-notes you can visit the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo (a quick train ride from beautiful Milano) for an exhibition that is on until June 2026, that covers the last seven hundred years of tarot. Carla Maria Russo vive e lavora a Milano.
The Sforza Altarpiece (Pala Sforzesca) is among the single most important works of art commissioned by Ludovico il Moro. Through this painting, we can trace both the heavy religious history of Milan and the dynastic ambitions of the Sforza court. By investigating this painting, we can further understand the atmosphere leading to the decline of Sforza power. Additionally, this painting shows the dramatic influence of the convergence of styles in Milan, from Leonardo da Vinci to the Flemish masters. With this comes the complicated attribution of the work, which until very recently, had remained unknown. Work Discussed: Giovanni Angelo Mirofoli (Master of the Sforza Altarpiece), Madonna Enthroned with Child, the Doctors of the Church and the Family of Ludovico il Moro (Sforza Altarpiece), 1495 https://pinacotecabrera.org/collezioni/collezione-on-line/madonna-in-trono-con-il-bambino-i-dottori-della-chiesa-e-la-famiglia-di-ludovico-il-moro-pala-sforzesca/Support/Watch/Follow: https://linktr.ee/italian_renaissance_podcastGet additional content by becoming a Patron: patreon.com/TheItalianRenaissancePodcast Support the show
There is no better way to explore the art and politics of the Sforza court in Milan than through the eyes of Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo spent most of his early career employed by Ludovico il Moro, the regent and eventual Duke of Milan. This episode ties together the drama and intrigue of Sforza court politics with the work Leonardo did during his First Milanese Period (1482-1499). Some of Leonardo's most innovative painting arrived in this period. Beyond his Last Supper, the Renaissance master also worked on court portraits. Looking at both Lady with an Ermine and La Belle Ferronniere, we unpack the history of the ladies of the Sforza court and the complex social structures in Leonardo's Milan. Additionally, we explore the sophistication of Leonardo's style and ingenuity, especially as precursors to his Mona Lisa. This conversation ultimately ties the complicated threads that unite art, court culture, politics, gender, and romance in Renaissance Milan.
This summer in Indonesia, the Mobile Brigade Corps (Brimob) paramilitary police unit sparked controversy after killing a 21-year-old man during a protest. The elite armed unit, which already had a reputation for misconduct, has often been deployed to ensure security or suppress separatist movements in Indonesia, sometimes leaving dozens dead in its wake. FRANCE 24's reporters Mélodie Sforza and Alexis Bregere met with some of the unit's victims.
Reviving Japan's countryside is a topic that's close to the heart of Shigeru Ishiba, the country's outgoing prime minister. Ishiba hails from a remote part of Japan and owes his political career to support from rural voters. This year, he doubled subsidies for local governments and appointed 180 "revitalisation officers". But the exodus from rural regions continues. Today, more than half of Japan's land is inhabited by less than 10 percent of the population. Yet generous incentives to encourage people living in cities to return to the countryside are having some success. FRANCE 24's Justin McCurry, Alexis Bregere, Mélodie Sforza, Ayana Nishikawa and Constantin Simon report.

Every year in Japan, thousands of fathers fall victim to parental child abduction. It very often follows the same pattern: the Japanese mother leaves suddenly with the child and then forbids the father from seeing them again. These are abductions that fathers – Japanese and foreign alike – are powerless to fight, since Japan is one of the only countries in the world that does not recognise joint custody post-marriage. After a divorce, custody is granted to only one parent. But now, the law is about to change. FRANCE 24's correspondents Alexis Bregere, Mélodie Sforza and Adam Hancock report.
August 6 will mark 80 years since the US dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Little Boy, as the bomb was nicknamed, killed 80,000 people instantly. By the end of the year, the death toll had risen to 140,000. What has become of the last survivors? How was the city of Hiroshima able to rebuild itself and transform from a city devastated by nuclear weapons to a centre of peace? FRANCE 24's Mélodie Sforza, Aruna Popuri, Makiko Kobayashi and Justin McCurry report.
On March 11, former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested by Interpol on a warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) and transferred to The Hague in the Netherlands to stand trial. The former Philippine leader is accused of crimes against humanity for his deadly war on drugs. Human rights groups say his policies left tens of thousands of Filipino men dead, many of them from poor backgrounds with no proven connections to drug use. But despite these accusations, many Filipinos continue to support Duterte and denounce a worsening security situation, particularly in the capital Manila. Meanwhile, relatives of victims are demanding justice. FRANCE 24's correspondents Alexis Bregere, Mélodie Sforza and Jan Camenzind Broomby report.

It's a price tag that has obsessed US President Donald Trump since his first term: the cost of the military shield the US provides to its allies. Particularly in Trump's sights are South Korea and Japan. Both countries pay around €1 billion per year for American protection on their own soil, a sum deemed insufficient by the US president. Last October, Trump even claimed that South Korea should pay 10 times more. Is the US president serious, or is this another high-stakes bluff? FRANCE 24's Adam Hancock, Alexis Bregere, Mélodie Sforza and Chloé Borgnon report.
Semiconductors can be found in all our electronic devices: mobile phones, computers and surveillance cameras. Still a minor player in this highly strategic sector, Vietnam is rapidly developing its industry. The government is investing in universities to train more engineers specialised in semiconductors, in the hope of eventually competing with China and Taiwan. FRANCE 24's Adam Hancock, William de Tamaris and Mélodie Sforza report.
Losing a child, on it's own, is more than enough to bear in one lifetime. But imagine losing three brothers before that and witnessing your mother's unimaginable grief while navigating sibling loss. Then, in a 17-month span, watching both of your parents die. And two years later, hearing the news that your only child, at just 22 years of age, was killed in a car accident. Darlene Sforza calls this layered grief. As she searches for her purpose in life, along the way, she is finding hope in sharing her story of survival, and grace, in honoring her son Matthew. Sexual harassment and assault is a big problem on Japan's huge public transport system. One in 10 women aged 16 to 29 say they have been touched inappropriately on trains, according to the government's first survey on the issue. But the actual number is likely to be much higher, as many women fear the consequences of reporting incidents to police. About 800 people are arrested for groping – known as "chikan" – in Tokyo every year. But many perpetrators get away with their crimes. In response, the police have launched an app to help them deal with the problem. FRANCE 24's Airi Futakuchi, Alexis Bregere, Mélodie Sforza and Justin McCurry report.

On January 23, Thailand officially authorised marriage for all – a historic decision that made the country the first in Southeast Asia to legalise same-sex unions. Within hours of the law's enactment, hundreds of couples said “yes” to tie the knot. Today, the kingdom is known as a safe haven for LGBTQ communities across the region where other countries such as Myanmar or Malaysia still consider same-sex relationships a crime. But despite homosexual couples' newly acquired right to marry, not everything is rosy in the "Land of Smiles". William de Tamaris, Mélodie Sforza and Justin McCurry report.
Japan is one of the fastest-ageing societies in the world, with almost a third of its population over 65 years old. As a result, the county is seeing more and more cases of dementia each year: almost 5 million people are now living with the condition. In response, the government is taking the problem seriously and has formed a special committee in a bid to tackle the crisis.
