Plausibly Live! - The Official Podcast of The Dave Bowman Show

Lincoln County, New Mexico, in the late 19th century was a place where money and power went hand in hand, and those who held them ruled with an iron fist. At the heart of this system was “The House,” a monopoly run by James Dolan and Lawrence Murphy. Their business, LG Murphy & Co., controlled everything from cattle sales to dry goods, banking, and even law enforcement. If you wanted to do business in Lincoln County, you had to go through The House—or face the consequences.

Josiah "Doc" Scurlock was a poet, philosopher, intellectual, and hardened killer long before he met Billy the Kid. His mysterious past in Mexico, rumors of dead men from New Orleans to Texas, penchant for vigilantism, and several close calls with hostile Natives all made Doc a man to be both feared and respected. However, the trials he would face after the Lincoln County War made Scurlock the man his family would remember.  Jose Chavez y Chavez was a constable in San Patricio and an ally of the Tunstall McSween faction during the Lincoln County War. Jose was a full participant in the troubles and was present during the Battle of Lincoln, making a getaway from the burning McSween home alongside Billy the Kid. But who was Jose Chavez y Chavez, really? Was he a Navajo, as popularly believed? And how did he become a hired assassin? Also discussed in this episode is Chavez's encounter with Bob Ford and the other Regulators and friends of Billy the Kid, guys like Henry Newton Brown, George and Frank Coe, Ab Saunders, John Middleton, Billy Wilson, Tom Pickett, and more! I also give my opinion on what really happened there at Fort Sumner on the night of Billy's alleged death and discuss The Kid's “body count”. This is a mashup of two previously released episodes on the pals of Billy the Kid. Welcome back as we tackle the questions nobody bothered to ask about our episode on Young Guns starring Emilio Estevez and everyone else who was hot in 1988. Zack gives us a brief history lesson about the Lincoln County War and how this film is surprisingly probably the most accurate representation ever put on film.  We go in detail about which of the Young "Buns" actors has showed his buns the most on screen and can't even believe the number that Charlie Sheen puts on the scoreboard.  Side note, one of the actresses in an early sex scene with LDP is someone Zack knows very well from Battlestar Galactica / Jenny from Pretty in Pink (and is apparently the daughter of the bad guy from Ernest Goes to Camp, small world). We play a brief game to see if Jenny can name a single current celebrity that is the age of the Young Guns cast.  Zack hits up more numbers than you would ever care to know about the box office and release schedule.   In print, we see the issue of Hustler magazine that started The People vs Larry Flynt was on the news stands when this movie was released.  In Playboy we are introduced to Cooper Hefner, who seems to be much less of a creep than his father.  Zack also realizes that he was lied to when he was told he was in the Guinness record holding conga line.  Jerry Seinfeld makes a very poor prediction about his future. In the Washington PA Observer Reporter we cover a few current events, but much more riveting was the Friday Night TV schedule and an article about the ladies boxing competition at the local fair getting much more spicy than the children in the audience were prepared for.

We are back and this time with a proper movie.  We watched Young Guns from 1988.  There were 80's heartthrobs all over the place in what bizarrely seems to be maybe the most historically accurate film depicting the Lincoln County War.  That's right, this is a biopic about Billy the Kid.   Spoiler alert, it is kind of serious and Bon Jovi is nowhere to be seen.  We think all of our preconceived notions about this film were from Young Guns 2.   Come along with us as we see a Fagan-like General Zod teach a wayward band of misfits about how to be cultured only to be gunned down in the streets by a business rival.  We get to see all of the shootin and cussin and jokes about bodily functions you would want in a film like this.  We have one of the wildest drug scenes in the history of film.  We get a little buns shot for the ladies from Coach Bombay that sadly does nothing for Jenny.  We get a less DILFy Dermot Mulrooney who nobody knew yet, so he has to just be gross.  Did we mention Lou Diamond Phillips and Howard Hughes are in this? Watch this movie and then come along for the ride on something that was even more forbidden than we realized.

But when you quadruple the budget, beef up the cast and toss in Christian Slater, the Shat Crew (and commissioner Kelly B.) certainly will saddle up. This 1990 Western is more "The Ballad of Brushy Bill Roberts" than an accurate retelling of the events following the Lincoln County War—with questionable wound care, incredible distances traveled, oddly accurate "wanted" posters, terrible Old Face and the notion that anyone would want to boink William Petersen. In this episode, hear about Big D's powwow adventure, play "Navajo or Shakespeare," learn how a Jenny Wright nude scene could possibly be a bad thing and decide whether Aragorn really needed to be in "Young Guns II." After the five-day Battle of Lincoln, the deputized posse called the Regulators disbanded. The Lincoln County War appeared to be over. Lew Wallace, the newly appointed governor of the New Mexico Territory knew that some of the former desperados were worried that they could be arrested at any point for whatever role they had played during the ordeal, so he offered amnesty for many of them. But those who had already been indicted for murder were still on law enforcement's “wanted” list. And that list included the person at the heart of today's episode: Billy the Kid. In the summer of 1895 John Selman Sr gunned down John Wesley Hardin. Considered one of the deadliest shootists of the Old west, Hardin killed his first man at the tender age of fifteen. In the decade that followed dozens of others would fall to the young man's guns, including – if the legend is true – a victim whose only crime was snoring too loud. Yet despite all this, Hardin's killer with a badge – John Selman – was far worse. One of the more memorable characters from Young Guns 1 and 2 was Chavez y Chavez, portrayed by the talented Lou Diamond Philips. And yes, Chavez was real! He was a constable in San Patricio and an ally of the Tunstall McSween faction during the Lincoln County War. Jose was a full participant in the troubles, and he was present during the Battle of Lincoln, making a getaway from the burning McSween home right alongside Billy the Kid. But who was Jose Chavez y Chavez really? Was he a Navajo as popularly believed? And how did he become a hired assassin? Also discussed in this episode is Chavez's encounter with Bob Ford and the other Regulators and friends of Billy the Kid, guys like Henry Newton Brown, George and Frank Coe, Ab Saunders, John Middleton, Billy Wilson, Tom Pickett, and more! I also give my opinion on what really happened there at Fort Sumner on the night of Billy's alleged death and discuss The Kid's “body count”.    Check out the website for more true tales from the Old West! https://www.wildwestextra.com/   Email me! https://www.wildwestextra.com/contact/   Buy me a coffee! https://www.buymeacoffee.com/wildwest   Free Newsletter! https://wildwestjosh.substack.com/   Join Patreon for ad free content! https://www.patreon.com/wildwestextra   1899 News Article on Vicente Silva - https://www.newspapers.com/clip/20885528/vicente-silva-law-vegas-new-mexico/   Dirty Sexy History | Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6FMMKMemXFFOkEgxWAqnvb#:~:text=The%20book%20focuses%20on%20intersex,fiction%2C%20and%20permits%20for%20pants!   Dirty Sexy History | Website - https://dirtysexyhistory.com/ Arkansas Dave Rudabaugh - https://www.wildwestextra.com/arkansas-dave-rudabaugh/   Frederick Tecumseh Waite article - https://wildwestjosh.substack.com/p/frederick-tecumseh-waite   Billy the Kid episode 1 – https://www.wildwestextra.com/billy-the-kid-orphan/   Billy the Kid episode 2 – https://www.wildwestextra.com/billy-the-kid-prelude-to-war/   Billy the Kid episode 3 – https://www.wildwestextra.com/billy-the-kid-lincoln-county-war/   Billy the Kid episode 4 – https://www.wildwestextra.com/billy-the-kid-desperado/   Billy the Kid episode 5 – https://www.wildwestextra.com/billy-the-kid-quien-es/   Billy the Kid: A Short and Violent Life | Robert Utley - https://www.amazon.com/dp/0803295588?linkCode=ssc&tag=onamzjoshta02-20&creativeASIN=0803295588&asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.YEHGNY7KFAU7&ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d_asin   Billy the Kid: The Endless Ride | Michael Wallis - https://www.amazon.com/dp/0393060683?linkCode=ssc&tag=onamzjoshta02-20&creativeASIN=0393060683&asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.YEHGNY7KFAU7&ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d_asin

Lincoln County, New Mexico Territory was the setting of a brutal conflict between rival factions vying for control of the county's dry goods and cattle interests. The Lincoln County War, as it came to be known, began in 1878 and persisted until 1881, a time of lawlessness and bloodshed in the Old West. One side of the feud was led by James Dolan, a powerful figure who wielded a monopoly over dry goods through his establishment "The House". The other faction was established by English-born John Tunstall and his partner Alexander McSween, who opened their own competing store with support from established cattleman John Chisum. Both sides gathered lawmen, businessmen, and criminal gangs to their aid, setting the stage for a violent and deadly confrontation. The Dolan faction was aligned with Sheriff William J. Brady and supported by the notorious Jesse Evans Gang. The Tunstall-McSween faction organized their own armed posse, the Lincoln County Regulators, with their own lawmen in the form of town constable Richard M. Brewer and Deputy US Marshal Robert A. Widenmann. And of course the notorious Billy the Kid. The War was characterized by a series of brutal revenge killings, starting with the murder of Tunstall by members of a Dolan authorized posse and the Evans Gang. The Regulators retaliated by killing Sheriff Brady and others in a series of violent incidents. The conflict continued to escalate for several months, culminating in the epic five-day battle of Lincoln, which resulted in the death of McSween and the dispersal of the Regulators. William H. Bonney rode into Lincoln County a teenager on the run from a noose. By the time he came out of McSween's burning home, guns blazing, he was well on the way to becoming the legend known as Billy the Kid. This is part three in the series on Billy the Kid. Lincoln Historic Site is unique in that it manages most of the historical buildings in the community of Lincoln. This most widely visited state monument in New Mexico is part of a community frozen in time—the 1870's and 1880's. Through a gift from the Hubbard Family Trust, the historic site now includes 17 structures and outbuildings, 7 of which are open year round and 2 more seasonally as museums. Most of the buildings in the community are representative of the Territorial Style of adobe architecture in the American Southwest. Lincoln is a town made famous by one of the most violent periods in New Mexico history. Today's visitors can see the Old Lincoln County Courthouse with museum exhibits that recount the details of the Lincoln County War and the historic use of the "House" as store, residence, Masonic Lodge, courthouse, and jail. Walk in the footsteps of Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett, and other famous and infamous characters of the Wild West. Trace the events of 1878 through the Courthouse and the Tunstall Store, with their preserved 19th-century atmosphere. Remarkably, the Tunstall Store contains displays of the original 19th-century merchandise in the original shelving and cases! Continue your walk through history by visiting El Torreón (a defensive tower built by native New Mexican settlers in the 1850s), the San Juan Mission Church, the Convento, Dr. Woods' House, the Montaño store and other historic structures throughout the town. The Anderson-Freeman Visitor's Center & Museum features historical exhibits in a timeline starting with American Indian prehistory and ending with the Lincoln County War. A 22 minute video about the Lincoln County War and the community is shown every half hour. The importance of this community and the significance of the Bonito Valley in the prehistory and history of the Territory of New Mexico are interpreted within some of the 17 structures that comprise Lincoln Historic Site. These historic adobe and stone buildings are preserved as they were in the late 1800s and represent the factions involved in the Lincoln County War, 1878-1881. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/loren-alberts/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loren-alberts/support

Today we mark the unfortunate passing of the talented historian, researcher, and author Robert Utley who wrote 2 excellent books on Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County War. His "Billy the Kid, A Short and Violent Life" was the very first BTK book that Michael bought after watching Young Guns 2. Our thoughts go out to Melody Webb, Bob's wife of over 40 years and we wish his family peace and comfort. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Every single piece of historical knowledge I have about the Wild West is from two movies; Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and Young Guns. And while watching Billy The Kid wreak havoc on the San Dimas Mall was fun, Young Guns probably did a better job of retelling the adventure of William H. Bonney and the Lincoln County War. Following the blueprint of The Outsiders, The Breakfast Club, and Stand By Me, Young Guns was more than a history lesson, it was another radical 80s ensemble cast. It is that very cast that we will be experimenting with. On today's episode we will recast Young Guns using actors and actresses from the 1980s. I'm Mo Shapiro, and joining me in the spirit world today is Max Sanders, and with that...
