But there have been instances of it raining frogs and fish. But did you hear about the time when for two-weeks straight it rained rocks and stones? (Raining Rocks, Storming Stones) *** In the film “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” the ending… sorry, spoiler here, but it has been since 1977 so you have had plenty of time to see it… at the end of the film, the aliens drop off dozens of humans that they've abducted over the years, and then welcome a volunteer human to leave with them – like an extraterrestrial foreign exchange student program. It's a fascinating concept, an extremely well-written premise for the film… but could that actually happen? Better question… has it already happened? (The Zeta Reticuli and Project Serpo) *** It could be argued that while William H. Bonney, better known as Billy the Kid, was a real person in history – that his story is more legend than fact. But then, being a notorious outlaw, pretending to die, and convincing everyone you are dead – then living out the rest of your life until you were an old man… that does probably deserve the label of “legend'. Is that story the fact… or is it fiction? (The Billy The Kid Conspiracy) *** Stories of giant, winged predators in the sky streaking down and attacking children and even full-grown men have been around since… well… ever. Some don't believe it possible, but if you do a Google search for “man-eating bird” you'll quickly find out they were not only real – but alive not that long ago. Or, perhaps… still soaring the skies, looking for their next meal… especially in and around New England. (Man-Eating Thunderbirds of New England) *** We've all heard of guardian angels – the idea that each one of us has a personal, supernatural protector following us at all times, battling for our souls to keep us from spiritual harm, if not physical. But if that's true – could we also each have a personal demon as well? A being also battling for our souls to send us to hell? One famous witch hunter believed exactly that. On the Billy the Kid Trail Billy The Kid Museum is located in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, on Highway 60-84, 2 miles east of downtown. It is one of the most complete museums in the Southwest and features relics of the historic past of one of Billy the Kid's favorite haunts. Scores of items are one of a kind and are not seen elsewhere. The museum appeals to old and young alike. Billy the Kid was a frequent visitor in Fort Sumner where the 21 year old outlaw was shot to death in 1881 by Lincoln County Sheriff, Pat Garrett. The Kid used William H. Bonney as his name even though he was born Henry McCarty. He also use the name Henry Antrium, taking the name of his stepfather. It's all blurred in the mists of myth that leaves the name ‘Billy the Kid' indelibly imprinted in folklore. One item in the museum is a rifle that belonged to Billy the Kid, along with the documentation. Other interesting things are the door Billy backed through the night he was slain and two curtains that came out of Pete Maxwell's bedroom where Billy was shot. There is a large rock he carved his name on. Also, on display you will see the chaps and spurs Billy liked to wear to the dances. Billy was a very good dancer and singer and was much admired by the young ladies. The museum's collection included antique cars, wagons, and buggies along with a horse drawn hearse and memorabilia from the once Fort Sumner military fort. Some of the most interesting items are an army blanket, cash box, and spurs that belonged to General Edwin Vose Sumner, the Civil War General for whom the fort was named in this eastern New Mexico town. There is a letter from his daughter giving the items to the museum. Billy The Kid is known the world over and has great appeal as an outlaw legend. Visitors have come from every state and 50 or more foreign countries. There is a large souvenir and gift shop in the front entrance to the museum where visitors may purchase items for the entire family. There is ample free parking around the museum. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/loren-alberts/message
Lincoln County, New Mexico Territory was the setting of a brutal conflict between rival factions vying for control of the county's dry goods and cattle interests. The Lincoln County War, as it came to be known, began in 1878 and persisted until 1881, a time of lawlessness and bloodshed in the Old West. One side of the feud was led by James Dolan, a powerful figure who wielded a monopoly over dry goods through his establishment "The House". The other faction was established by English-born John Tunstall and his partner Alexander McSween, who opened their own competing store with support from established cattleman John Chisum. Both sides gathered lawmen, businessmen, and criminal gangs to their aid, setting the stage for a violent and deadly confrontation. The Dolan faction was aligned with Sheriff William J. Brady and supported by the notorious Jesse Evans Gang. The Tunstall-McSween faction organized their own armed posse, the Lincoln County Regulators, with their own lawmen in the form of town constable Richard M. Brewer and Deputy US Marshal Robert A. Widenmann. And of course the notorious Billy the Kid. The War was characterized by a series of brutal revenge killings, starting with the murder of Tunstall by members of a Dolan authorized posse and the Evans Gang. The Regulators retaliated by killing Sheriff Brady and others in a series of violent incidents. The conflict continued to escalate for several months, culminating in the epic five-day battle of Lincoln, which resulted in the death of McSween and the dispersal of the Regulators. William H. Bonney rode into Lincoln County a teenager on the run from a noose. By the time he came out of McSween's burning home, guns blazing, he was well on the way to becoming the legend known as Billy the Kid. This is part three in the series on Billy the Kid. Fleeing a potential hangman's noose in Arizona, Kid Antrim returns to New Mexico, taking on the alias William H. Bonney as he begins riding with the outlaw Jesse Evans and his Boys. The Kid would soon find legitimate work elsewhere, however, coming into the employ of English rancher John Tunstall just as tensions are at an all time high with the rival Murphy Dolan faction. This young man, in his short life, has established his place in history and legend. Who was Billy the Kid? How did he become a legend? "I don't blame you for writing of me as you have. You had to believe other stories, but then I don't know if any one would believe anything good of me anyway.” ~ Billy the Kid's comment to a Las Vegas Gazette reporter (December, 1880)

Every single piece of historical knowledge I have about the Wild West is from two movies; Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and Young Guns. And while watching Billy The Kid wreak havoc on the San Dimas Mall was fun, Young Guns probably did a better job of retelling the adventure of William H. Bonney and the Lincoln County War. Following the blueprint of The Outsiders, The Breakfast Club, and Stand By Me, Young Guns was more than a history lesson, it was another radical 80s ensemble cast. It is that very cast that we will be experimenting with. On today's episode we will recast Young Guns using actors and actresses from the 1980s. I'm Mo Shapiro, and joining me in the spirit world today is Max Sanders, and with that...
Michael discussed in detail the disconnect between what William H. Bonney thought Governor Lew Wallace was going to do for him, and what Wallace actually did (basically, nothing). Wallace left Billy to twist in the wind up to and beyond the point he was indicted and found guilty of killing Sheriff William Brady on April 1, 1878. On July 14, 1791, President George Washington appointed Thomas Johnson, who had been Maryland's first governor and who was a resident of Frederick, as an Associate Justice of The States Supreme Court of The Un ited States. On July 14, 1885, Samuel Heidelberger Rosenstock, who achieved great success in the canning industry in Frederick County, and who made countless contributions to local institutions and charities, was born in Baltimore. He died March 22, 1981, at his West Second Street home across from Baker Park. On July 14, 1902, fire heavily damaged the south wing of the Montevue Hospital, then two miles from Frederick. All city fire equipment and manpower took nearly an hour to arrive on the scene. The blaze began in a clothes room on the fifth floor. Damage was extensive on the south wing's fourth and fifth floors and the south tower. More than 125 “inmates” were evacuated, as was a great deal of the buildings' furnishings. Today in 1881, Billy the Kid was shot and killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett in Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Billy the Kid's real name? William H. Bonney Jr. Today in 1911, Harry N. Atwood landed an airplane on the lawn of the White House to accept an award from President William Taft. Today in 1946, Benjamin Spock published the book that would forever change the way Americans raised their children. The book was “The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care,” and it is still one of the best-selling books in history. Today in 1951, the George Washington Carver National Monument in Joplin, Missouri, became the first national park to honor an African American. Today in 1965, the American space probe, the Mariner 4, flew by Mars, and sent back photographs of the planet. Today in 1966, Richard Speck brutally murdered eight student nurses in a Chicago dormitory. A ninth nurse survived the attack and later testified against him. Convicted of multiple murder in April 1967, Speck was sentenced to death a month later. The Supreme Court later overturned the sentence (on the basis that the sentence was unconstitutional) and Speck was ordered to serve consecutive life sentences that totaled more than 400 years. He only served 19 years of the term as he died of a massive heart attack in December 1991. Not surprisingly, no one claimed the body, which was later cremated with the ashes buried in an undisclosed location. Today in 1968, Hank Aaron hit his 500th career home run while with the Atlanta Braves. Today in 1976, Jimmy Carter won the Democratic Presidential nomination by an overwhelming margin at the party's convention in New York City. Today in 1981, the All-Star Game was postponed because of a 33-day-old baseball players strike. The game was finally played on August 9th. Today in 1983, House representative Daniel Crane of Illinois and Gerry Studds of Massachusetts admitted to having sex with congressional pages. Today in 1997, O.J. Simpson's California mansion was auctioned off for $2.6-million dollars. Today in 1998, the city of Los Angeles sued 15 tobacco companies for $2.5 billion over the dangers of secondhand smoke. Today in 1999, major league umpires voted to resign on September 2nd and not work the final month of the season in an effort to get more money. The strategy collapsed when baseball owners accepted the resignations of 22 umpires. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It was just 140 years ago today, April 28, 1881, when Henry McCarty, better known as Billy the Kid or William H. Bonney, broke out of the Lincoln County Court House in New Mexico, after having shot two Sheriff's Deputies. On the evening of the 28th, Deputy Bob Olinger had taken some prisoners downtown to eat their dinner, leaving Deputy James Bell to guard the Kid. Allowing McCarty to relieve himself with a bathroom break was Bell's mistake, for while climbing back up the Court House steps, Billy managed to get lose from his cuffs, beat Bell, grabbed his pistol... Did Pat Garrett kill Billy the Kid? It was a moonlit night in Ft. Sumner, NM when history tells us that Sheriff Pat Garrett shot down the notorious outlaw Billy “the Kid”. Newspapers across the country quickly reported that the Kid was dead and Garrett quickly put the body in the ground. But rumors spread that the Kid had survived and the testimony of Garrett’s posse was contradictory about how, exactly, the shooting had gone down. Nevertheless, without evidence, the story of the heroic Sheriff stood for almost 70 years. Then, in 1950, an old man from Hico, TX petitioned the governor of New Mexico for a pardon for crimes he committed as Billy the Kid. No one took him seriously, and yet the old man was an exact match in physical characteristics and knew intimate details about the Kid’s life. He also knew details about the fateful shooting the night Garrett claimed to have shot him that had been erased by history. Details, for example, that Garrett had killed his very drunk bearded half-Mexican partner, a claim that has only recently been verified by modern research. It has been said that the living write history and not the dead, but when one returns from the dead, so to speak, that which was lost to history is restored. This is the true story of Billy the Kid, complete with new evidence that he lived to a ripe old age and died a free man. THE STORY In 1882 the notorious outlaw Jesse Evans, a childhood friend of Billy the Kid and a participant in the Lincoln County War, walked out of jail after serving a sentence for killing a Texas ranger. Jesse walked out of prison a free man and disappeared, never to be heard from again. Never, that is, until 1949 when Jesse came out of hiding after almost 60 years to claim an inheritance left to him by his brother. In the course of proving his identity to a court, Jesse told some amazing stories of his time when he was an outlaw but his biggest revelation of all was that his good friend Billy the Kid was still alive. Jesse led a young lawyer named William Morrison to an old man named not William H. Bonney but William H. Roberts who after some consideration finally agreed to come forward and reveal himself as Billy the Kid. He agreed to this on one condition- that the lawyer helps him obtain the pardon he was promised by the Governor but never received so he could die a free man. You see, Billy the Kid was still wanted for murder and was condemned to hang. To reveal himself was to risk arrest and death. This was a risk that William H. Roberts was willing to take. He sat down with Mr. Morrison and told his story. This book contains that story. It is the one true autobiography of Billy the Kid. A story that aside from some definite highlights and adventures that one would expect from the Kid, was remarkable normal and focused on his skill breaking horses as much or as more as his skill as a gunslinger. Billy the Kid was, in fact, just a gifted young cowhand who found himself juxtaposed against corrupt officials and lawmen at what became a key moment in American History. Before one dismisses Mr. Roberts it should be considered that 5 living acquaintances of Billy the Kid, aside from Mr. Evans who revealed him, were willing to sign legal affidavits that Mr. Roberts was the man they knew as Billy the Kid. Further, the new photographic comparison shows beyond a shadow of a doubt that they were the same man. Mr. Roberts' story became the inspiration for the opening scene in the hit movie "Young Guns II" starring Emilio Estevez as Billy the Kid. Also, Consider that Pat Garrett was denied his reward for killing the kid for many months and that only a special act of the legislature allowed him to finally receive it. All of this and more is contained in this book. Thanks to Mr. Morrison each of us can now pull up a chair, sit down across from Billy the Kid, and listen as he shares his story. True Consequences is a proud member of the Barelas Podcasters Guild and The Oracl3 Network. Today's episode is brought to you by podcorn. Go to podcorn.com/podcasters for more information. True Consequences is a proud member of Billy the kid was one of the most notorious outlaws in the 1800s and his story has been sensationalized and blown out of proportion so I am going to attempt to tell you the story as close to the truth as I can determine. This version of Billy the Kid isn’t as sexy as many listeners are used to so I apologize for that in advance. But like I said his story has been sensationalized and a certain mythos has been created around his life. Henry McCarty was born on November 23rd (according to some) 1859 in New York City, New York. He was raised in poverty in New York with his mom and father. It is believed that he took the now famous alias of William H. Bonney by using the name of his mom’s boyfriend and her maiden name. This is the story of Billy the Kid - References: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Tunstallhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Dolan_(Lincoln_County_War)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Fe_Ringhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_County_Warhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_McSweenhttps://www.biography.com/crime-figure/billy-the-kid#:~:text=on%20November%2023%2C%201859%2C%20in,got%20involved%20in%20petty%20theft.https://eagle.rrps.net/UserFiles/Servers/Server_133377/File/NM7_Chapter_05.pdfhttps://www.legendsofamerica.com/we-jamesdolan/https://www.legendsofamerica.com/we-lawrencemurphy/Melzer, R., Kerwin, C. No other historical figure from the Old West has stirred up more controversy and eluded historians and biographers more than Billy the Kid alias William H. Bonney. This young man in his short life has established his place in history and legend, but there is more to the myth there’s the man. Who was Billy the Kid? How did he become a legend? Was he more of a victim of circumstance? In Part 1, that’s what we try to figure out while we separate fact from myth.“I don’t blame you for writing of me as you have. You had to believe other stories, but then I don’t know if any one would believe anything good of me anyway.”~ Billy the Kid’s comment to a Las Vegas Gazette reporter (December, 1880)
