Scripture: Matthew 7:7-12, 15-20 Dear Church, Sometimes the words of Jesus soothe, and sometimes they sear. This Sunday, we will pick up where we left off last week in the sermon on the mount and consider this teaching from our Lord: Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly … Continue reading "True/False-Week 2 // True & False Prophets // Pastor Kate Murphy"

Every once in a while, an interview turns more into a conversation amongst rap dudes. We anticipated having Rapper Big Pooh and Phonte for just 45 minutes, so when I tell you the interview lasted 2 hours and 30 minutes, it tells you just how funny and relatable these guys are to talk to. We covered an awful lot, yet it wasn't nearly enough once it was over. We discuss the May the Lord Watch documentary, their love for Beck or Bjork and their hate for Sci-Fi and its magical white people. We touch on their ridiculous stretch of music that ultimately burnt them out. We get into the brilliance of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Ice Cube's Death Certificate, which is better Low End Theory or Midnight Marauders, and Dominican broads making chili con queso. We also talk Ghostface, Murs, Common, The Roots, Evidence, Kendrick Lamar and their affection for Outkast. I saw a great quote the other day and it said, "If Wu-Tang is for the kids, Little Brother is for the ones that raise them." Thanks to Rapper Big Pooh, Phonte, Andre Barnes and our longtime homie, I.D. for the idea. Stay tuned as we prepare to drop our Little Brother tribute in early March. Enjoy the discussion. www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal Follow us on Instagram @takeitpersonalradio

Little Brother is a rap group from North Carolina. The three original members – Phonte, Big Pooh and 9th Wonder – were living in their college dorms when they decided to make music together. They hit open mics and played local shows, but they never expected a rags-to-riches story. After uploading a few songs to a hip-hop message board called Okayplayer, they released their debut LP, The Listening. By indie-label standards, it was a hit. They signed to a major label, but their second album didn't perform as well as they would've liked. After being dropped by their label, 9th Wonder left the group and Little Brother disbanded shortly after. In 2019, Phonte and Big Pooh reunited as Little Brother and dropped their album May the Lord Watch. Now, they're on tour to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut album. They also have a documentary in the works. This week on Bullseye, Phonte and Big Pooh join us to reflect on their long and eventful career as Little Brother.

Let the Record Show – the crate-dug interview series in which artists discuss their favorite songs of all time as the tracks spin on vinyl – is back after a pandemic-induced hiatus. Episode 41 is the first in its video-conferenced “Socially Distant Series” featuring North Carolina hip-hop duo Little Brother (aka Phonte Coleman and Rapper Big Pooh). A lot of history precedes the episode, as Little Brother group member Phonte was one of the earliest guests on Let the Record Show in its second episode alongside Nicolay as The Foreign Exchange. In turn, the Let the Record Show hosts championed Little Brother’s music early on via HipHopSite.com in the early 2000s through a series of exclusive retail releases. Most recently, Little Brother received critical acclaim for their 2019 return album May the Lord Watch. Longtime friends reunite in this episode to debate everything from Raekwon to Radiohead, with a series of hot takes that erupt into hilarious, spirited debates. Topics include the moment Ice Cube albums began to disappoint, if Nas’ It Was Written is superior to Illmatic (!), if Goodie Mob’s Soul Food is better than Outkast’s ATLiens (!!), and what the worst Wu-Tang solo album is. As the longest episode in the series yet, the rap blasphemy is abundant and the musical minutia is massive, with over 75 songs mentioned or referenced throughout the conversation. Towards the end of the show, Little Brother reveals plans for an upcoming, full-length documentary film, which will explore their story in detail, and where things went wrong during the group’s history. Originally released April 2020.
