B. Cox is joined by Chris Mitchell (Kinetik) of the Breaking Atoms Podcast to review Little Brother's classic debut studio album The Listening as it turns 20. The group, which was formerly made up of the trio of emcees Phonte and Big Pooh and producer 9th Wonder, met as students on the campus of North Carolina Central University. They bonded over their shared love and passion of hip-hop and formed a collective with other North Carolina college students who were hip-hop artists and producers which would become known as the Justus League.Pooling together their resources and creativity, the trio started recording their debut album. After working their local hip-hop scene and the college radio circle in their home state of North Carolina, the group signed its record deal with ABB Records and gained a sizable fanbase, following and a community online though forums such as their own Justus League The LAWN, OkayPlayer and other hip-hop sites. Boosting the groups popularity was the skills and creativity Phonte and Pooh and the soulful sample based production of 9th Wonder that drew comparisons in tenor and tone to predecessors such as groups from the collectives the Native Tongues and Soulquarians. Over 65 minutes and utilizing a concept used frequently in hip-hop, the album is presented through the lens of a radio station broadcast schedule, WJLR, presenting all of the tropes of terrestrial radio complete with skits and fictional disc jockeys which accompanied the album's tracks. While the album had no major singles or sales numbers to report, its legend has been boosted by their niche, but loyal fanbase that has followed them since the beginning. The album has been deemed an underground and indie hip-hop classic and the launching pad of a group that has had a successful, yet complicated two decades in the industry.Follow Chris Mitchell (Kinetik) Onlinehttps://linktr.ee/iamkinetikVisit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comCheck Out Our Clothing and Merch Shop and Cop Some Gear!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Support The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodShow NotesPassion Weiss: The Oral History of The Lawn (by Chris "Kinetik" Mitchell)https://www.passionweiss.com/2022/03/24/the-oral-history-of-the-lawn/Albumism: Little Brother's Debut Album "The Listening" Turns 20 | Album Anniversaryhttps://albumism.com/features/little-brother-debut-album-the-listening-album-anniversaryPitchfork: Little Brother "The Listening" Review https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/little-brother-the-listening/GQ: Little Brother Looks Back On 20 Years Of "The Listening" https://www.gq.com/story/little-brother-the-listening-album-20-yearsHipHopDX: Little Brother on 'The Listening' at 20 & Marauding For Earshttps://hiphopdx.com/news/little-brother-the-listening-20-year-intervew Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

What's up Just Us League?!? Yeah, we're calling you all that from now on. It's cute and not at all cringey in the least! How was your Thanksgiving? Good? Full of family drama? We'd love to hear about it! Send us an email! Anyways, this week's story is one that I have been wanting to tell for a while. This story was the reason I wanted to make a YouTube channel to begin with, but opted for the better option of making a podcast instead. To be completely honest, this episode's story is the reason why I now understand why people don't leave their abusive relationships right away...Or sometimes at all. This story made me realize how weak I used to be, and how strong I am now. I hope this story can help people identify their abusive relationships, because they all don't look the same. If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship call 1-800-799-SAFE You're not alone. Talk to you soon. -P --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-just-us-podcast1/support

Introducing Justus Wolters.
Wordsworth and Pearl Gates navigate through tragedy and triumph with musical moxie on Champion Sound. Having previously collaborated on various projects (Wordsworth solo albums, eMC), this effort allows their familiarity to sonically take shape in ways, both complimentary and dynamic. This thirteen song, Quincy Tones-produced ensemble evokes the spirit of quintessential east coast hip-hop while elaborating stylistically beyond its boundaries. Quincy Tones, born and raised in West London, has produced for Royce Da 5’9 (Dinner Time), Jay Electronica and Diddy (Ghost of Christopher Wallace), Fashawn (Man of the House), and eMC (Winds of Change). Quincy Tones describes his sound as melodic, soulful, and emotional. Champion Sound is an honest journey into the human experience; traveling through captivating melodies, stellar drum loops and witty lyricism at the speed of life. Guest features include the legendary Kool G. Rap, Talib Kweli, Rasheed Chappell, and eMC affiliate Masta Ace. As Wordsworth says on the album titled track Champion Sound, “Title Contenders and Rivals surrender’”. Wordsworth is a musician and graduate of the University of Miami, with a Masters of Music Business, and a graduate of S.U.N.Y Old Westbury, with a bachelors degree in Language Arts. In 2016, he was honored as one of the top 50 graduates of Old Westbury. He used his unique skill to write his college papers in rhyme in multiple subjects. Recently, he’s received a Masters of Secondary Education, from Grand Canyon University. He is also known as a Co-creator of MTV’s The Lyricist Lounge Show. His music has appeared on shows such as Criminal Minds and NCIS. His musical contributions expand to animation soundtracks such as Spongebob Squarepants Movie, Dexter’s Laboratory: Hip-Hop experiment, and currently appears as himself on Netflix’s Peabody and Sherman, season 1 episode 2. Also, he is part of the Hip-Hop group eMC, with Masta Ace and Stricklin. Since, 2016 he has excelled as a teacher and developed a music course unlike any in the country. Wordsworth appeared on Fox 4 news discussing the program https://www.fox4now.com/news/local-news/oak-hammock-middle-school-combines-music-and-learning The curriculum has been created to contribute something unique to world after receiving his Masters of Music Business. He plans to turn his curriculum into a national course. He is currently working on an autobiography, documenting his journey of music and education. Wordsworth was recently the guest speaker at New York’s Baruch College to speak during one of their music business classes. Washington Heights, New York bred rapper/singer Pearl Gates is a fresh face in Hip Hop but no stranger to blessing industry insiders and fans with quality music. Pearl Gates released his first mixtape "A Star In A Broken Sky" and immediately began to strengthen his grassroots movement. This led to opportunities touring with Masta Ace, Wordsworth, Boldy James (Mass Appeal Records) and PRhyme (Royce da 5'9 and DJ Premier). Gates appeared alongside rap supergroup eMC (Masta Ace, Wordsworth, and Stricklin) on "Fly Thoughts," the first single off their album "The Tonight Show" (via Penalty Entertainment/Sony RED) and inked a deal with Below System Records (Netherlands) shortly thereafter. His debut EP “Diamond Mind” was released in 2015 and features production from Khrysis of Justus League (9th Wonder), Kic Beats, iRobot Scott (for Triangle Park Music) and Sirplus. Artists featured include Masta Ace, Wordsworth, and Boldy James among others. He then followed up with "Play This," an EP with fellow rapper Syll which gained support from the likes of DJ Premier and DJ Eclipse, and led to Kool G Rap featuring Pearl on his album "Return of The Don" alongside Crooked I and Willie The Kid on the song "World Is Mine." He's also featured on albums from Ed O.G, Blu and DV Alias Khryst among others. His critically acclaimed full length debut album "Live From The First" was released in 2017. The well received outing features Cassidy, Torae, Bri Steves (Atlantic Records) and Geechi Suede from Camp Lo. Aside from his releases, Gates has song placements on hit the TV series “Criminal Minds,” “NCIS LA” and Own Network’s show “Queen Sugar.” He’s also penned records for artists such as Keisha Chante, R&B group Good Girl (Warner Bros. Records) and is part of the Philadelphia-based hip hop collective TheIdea.

WE'RE BACK! Coming off our brief hiatus, we jump into the insane number of things that happened since Episode 10, including Rapsody and NC hip-hop in general on NETFLIX(!!) and the arrival of the new Kooley High album, “Never Come Down.” We're also talking to mixing engineer Brian Kidd, who is a living testament to the power of music. Not only did an early 2000's Consequence mixtape, and the song “I See Now,” featuring Kanye West and Little Brother, strengthen his resolve to one day work in music, it literally inspired him to move to North Carolina to see what 9th Wonder and the rest of the Justus League was getting up to. In our interview with Brian, he talks about working for free when you're starting out, shooting his shot on Twitter when he first arrived in NC, his thoughts on the new Kooley High album, and much more. ———— NEW ON THE SITE THIS WEEK! Contributors Jimmy Branley and Alex Yllanes reported back after seeing Big K.R.I.T., Ty Dolla $ign and others at The Ritz in Raleigh: http://www.superempty.com/news/2018/4/2/a-night-at-the-ritz-with-big-krit-friends Ace Henderson — rapper, friend of Super Empty, and thoughtful human being — shares his unique perspective on the eternal question of quantity versus quality: http://www.superempty.com/news/2018/4/4/stop-and-listen-to-the-flowers And don't forget, tomorrow (4/5) we have a BONUS POD dropping, with Kaze and Shaw Hargett of Hillmatic, the two-day hip-hop festival celebrating its third year in Chapel Hill this weekend. THURSDAY, JANUARY 5, 2017, 8 PM EST: UWA Elite Pro Wrestling is just 9 days away from Setting the Standard 2017, the first supercard of its 17th season! The very first episode of the All Access Podcast in 2017 is a massive one, with multiple interviews with major players in UWA Elite! The episode kicks off with an exclusive interview with Drake Chambers! Chambers won the coveted Golden Ticket last November, and with it the right to challenge for any UWA Elite title at any time. But his newfound opportunity brought Drake a new enemy in the form of Nicholas Kaye. What will Chambers say about his match with Nicholas Kaye at UWA Elite Setting the Standard - and will he cash in his Golden Ticket that night? Later in the show, Colin West gets the first-ever interview with the Just-Us League. This dangerous combination of Chris Steeler and Michael Massacre seems, at least on paper, to not make a ton of sense. But Steeler and Massacre appear to be on the same page, and that makes them focused - and highly dangerous. What brought the Just-Us League together? Find out on this episode! Plus, Colin West takes a deeper look at the Battle Royal at Setting the Standard, and the participants that may be new to current UWA Elite fans. What do you need to know about Everett Cross, Ron Voyage, "Chiller" Miles Thomas, Sprinkles the Clown, and Eric Alvarado? All this and more on the latest edition of the UWA Elite All Access Podcast, only on the Nerd Port Network! Tune into the All Access Podcast every Thursday night at 8 pm EST, or on demand anytime!
We are bringing you a new show done by geeks, for geeks. Brought to you by the Just-Us League, Robert and Rocky discuss a topic each week that people geek out about. Typically there will be guests discussing a unique subject that they geek out about, and we try to understand it in comparison to our own geeky ways. This week we are doing a soft roll out, and introduced one of the ways that we geeky out ourselves, Movies. More specifically, we discuss comic movies, and the most recent Batman vs Superman. Join us in the coming episodes as we find people and address their own GEEK.
In this episode we talk about Anderson Paak and Knxledge's new collaboration, Bryson Tiller, Big K.R.I.T's bday and throw it back with Yelawolf's Trunk Muzik, Justus League member, Median and Sango's back-catalogue
BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents @supastition_NC interview session!! You don’t say NC hip-hop without mentioning this man’s name - check the resume if you don’t already know - he’s been putting it down for long time for NC and the South in general. We dig into early day goodness, his first record deal experience with Davy DMX that ended up the inspiration for his debut LP “7 Years of Bad Luck”, why he had to hold down rhyme duties and get behind the boards himself early in his career, his early 12” deal with Rasco and his incredible knack for using little known producers early in their careers, that eventually turned future Grammy winners - Jake One, M-Phazes & Illmind to name a few! Supa breaks down his ceiling smashing appearance on “The Williams” alongside Foreign Exchange founder Nicolay in the early days of Okayplayer, his history & relationships with Little Brother, Big Dho and the entire Justus League, not to mention a great story around “Rollin’ Out”, the Khrysis produced heater that appeared on the DJ Drama / Little Brother mixtape “Separate But Equal”. On top of all that, we have a great sidebar convo about Landmark Diner and the regional expansion of Cookout’s across the Southeast, challenges in the Charlotte hip-hop scene, how Supa’s move to the ATL has gone and becoming part of the Soundsci collective. Of course we get into his new album, “The Gold Standard”, which drops June 2 and will be available on his 60+ day tour with Blueprint that kicks off in late May!
