Hello. It's 2025. How can that be? I look at the number and think, that's a futuristic number. Wasn't the future supposed to be easier? Something tells me 2025 will not be easy. Still, I'm determined to meet it with can-do attitude. For now though, let's ease into it. With that it mind I chose this recording, Forest Stream Suite. The environmental sound was captured last June in Forest Park, Portland, Oregon; a place we'll be revisiting throughout the coming year. Many of the seasonal streams were, by that time, down to a trickle. The percussive sound at the top of the recording is one such a trickle, a thread of water falling over a stone, as captured by a homemade hydrophone. The hydrophone is a simple design incorporating a ~$1 bulk-supply 27mm contact mic, a kombucha bottle screw cap, a coin (for ballast), a 1/8th inch stereo cord, a swatch of duct tape, and a couple dips in liquid plastic. I was instructed in the ways of DIY contact mic wizardry by the gifted sound artist Marcus Fischer at a workshop hosted by Oregon Contemporary about a month prior. Thanks Marcus and Oregon Contemporary! Hydrophone recording is something I hope to do more of in the coming year. Maybe I'll invest in something a little more sensitive. Or possibly a stereo pair? The instrumentation follows the pattern of previous Listening Spot releases: One continuous field recording and several distinct musical movements in the same key. With the hydrophone click track as a jumping-off point, this one is reaches out its sound tentacles in new directions, without letting go of the familiar. There's some of my favorite wildlife belting it out here: American Robin, Pacific Wren, Wilson's Warbler, Yellow Warbler… While listening, I can picture the dappled light of the forest. Thanks for tuning in. I'm grateful for your interest. Forest Stream Suite is available under the artist name Listening Spot on all streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple, Tidal, Amazon, YouTube…) Friday, January 3rd. I hope you can spend some quiet time with it.Lastly, I took some time to write some reflections on my first year of being on Substack a couple days ago. I didn't send it out as a newsletter, because it was mostly written as an exercise to clarify some things for myself. I'm mentioning it here for those who may be curious about the platform, my impressions as a musician, and some intentions in 2025. Happy New Year! This is a public episode. Kristan Kennedy is a Portland-based artist, curator, and educator.  She is the Artistic Director, Curator of Visual Art for the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA). For more than a decade, Kennedy has focused on commissioning new work by international emerging artists in the form of large-scale, site-specific installations and solo projects that exist at the borders of genres. Kennedy teaches in the Visual Studies MFA program at the Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) Contemporary Art. Kennedy is represented by Fourteen30 Contemporary, Portland, Oregon. While the artist identifies as a painter, she also questions the history, process and medium that she is complicit in perpetuating. Curator and critic Stephanie Snyder says of Kennedy's paintings in Artforum, “their intense dialectic of beauty and repulsion mirrors the artist's philosophical struggles—we sense that both artist and artwork have gone through the wringer—together—to achieve a hard-won grace”. Recent exhibitions include Flat Fix, Halsey McKay Gallery, NY; Eyes, Ditch Projects, OR; Sunday, Crisp-Ellert Museum, FL; Kristan Kennedy Meets a Clock, Soloway, NY; Sleeper, Fourteen30 Contemporary, OR; OO, Misako & Rosen, Tokyo; Tomorrow, Tomorrow, CANADA and Other Colors, Fourteen30 Contemporary. Mysteries of the Deep is delighted to present its second album by Portland, Oregon-based musician and multimedia artist William Selman (@wselman), entitled “Naming Before Names.” In a world that demands categorization of everything around us through taxonomies, genres, and strict schemas, Selman’s album aims to explore the spaces between categories. His goal is not to offer concrete explanatory gestures, but rather, to create a deliberate space for suspension and ambiguity. These eight compositions conjure a world in which humans are asked to stand on the periphery, observing their surroundings from a vantage of curious wonder, rather than clear definition. Selman draws from distinct sonic realms, however, citing David Berhman, Maggi Payne, and Alvin Curran as influences. He says, “I like the way these artists use simple forms to ground dense compositions with an approach to composition that is improvisational and collage-like.” In line with this sentiment, the album’s quality is uncannily natural. Many of Selman’s field recordings, collected over a twenty-year period, find a home here, adorning a landscape that’s as visual as it is sonic; we hear hydrophone recordings of tide pools and summer lagoons, grasshopper wings in a lava field, broken humidifiers and sandstorms alongside moments of intentional instrumentation. Light vibraphone gives way to slow hand drum movements. Textured synths add viscosity without extracting us from the ecological world. It feels inaccurate to say the album’s occasional rhythms are constructed; rather, patterns seem to arise organically out of the aether. In Selman’s universe, there’s a sense that everything exists in primordial unity, untouched by the human imprint that insists on fragmenting the world into recognizable parts. Written, produced, and recorded by William Selman in Portland, Oregon Jan 2018 - Feb 2020 Bass guitar on "A New Old Firmament" by Steve Wade Special thanks to Paul Dickow and Marcus Fischer for percussion and the time-share vibraphone Additional mixing by Oliver Chapoy at Ohm Sweet Ohm, NY Mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri at Black Knoll Studio, NY Photography by Candace Price Words by Taylor Bratches

Marcus Fischer is a musician + interdisciplinary artist based in Portland, Oregon. His work typically centers around memory, geography + the manipulation of physical audio recording mediums. Slowly unfolding melodies and warm tape saturated drones have become a trademark of his recordings + live performances alike. These sounds have found their way into multimedia installations, short films, and even into the award winning public radio program Radiolab. Fischer has released a number of recordings on the widely respected 12k label including his photographic + sonic collaborations with label founder Taylor Deupree. In 2017 Marcus Fischer was an artist in residence at the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation / Rauschenberg Residency where he completed "Loss", his most recent solo album (released September, 2017) Two of his sound works are on view in the 2019 Whitney Biennial from May 17th-Sept 22nd and he recently performed in the Museum as part of the show.

There’s something about Marcus Fischer’s music that fits this season. Last year, a lot of listeners shared how the snowstorms they were homebound by were the perfect backdrop to Marcus’s reflections. As another year closes, I am so excited to share another conversation with this wonderful artist. This isn’t something I expected, but Marcus has been really giving of his time and it was his suggestion to do a follow-up. In the spirit of the season, I’m very thankful to have gotten to know him better. Since episode 5, Marcus has been for lack of a much better word, busy. He completed the Rauschenberg Residency and released the follow-up to 2010’s 'Monocoastal' — 'Loss', which is absolutely stunning. He established an experimental power trio with Paul Dickow and William Selman called Wild Card, which toured with High Plains at the end of this past summer. He’s been performing with Lisa Schonberg’s Secret Drum Band. He recorded another collaboration with 12k’s Taylor Deupree called 'Lowlands'. And I’m sure I’m missing something. This episode digs beyond his output as an artist to explore the internal processes that inform his approach, especially as an improviser. As always, the music from each of these projects and partnerships weaves throughout the episode, which can all be purchased as digital or characteristically breathtaking physical objects on Bandcamp. Grab a warm cup of tea and dive in. It has finally happened...wine is on the set and Brittany couldn't be happier. The Indianapolis Wine Festival is coming up in a few weeks and we wanted to bring them on the show to talk about what we can expect this year. Plus, Indy Do Day is looking to get 20,000 people out for community service projects this year - Let's help them achieve this goal! All this and Paul Poteet is back...on the EDGE! Marcus Fischer, Trade Marketing Manager for Anheuser-Busch and organizer of the event, says there will be over 200 different wines from around the world at this year's event. Marcus Fischer has been a staple figure in modern ambient and experimental music for the better part of the last decade. Characterized by his masterful use of tape loops, Fischer's works also build space and emotion through layers of baritone guitar and modular synths. His solo debut, 'Monocoastal', was released on 12k in 2010 to international acclaim. Over the course of his career, he has partnered with several artists: Matt Jones (as Unrecognizable Now), Ted Laderas/The OO-Ray, Simon Scott, Devin Underwood. His collaborations with Taylor Deupree, with whom Fischer released 'Twine' in 2015, are masterclasses in shared voice and restraint. Fischer is a longstanding member of lines (www.llllllll.co), the online community that surrounds Eurorack module and instrument maker monome. Happy May Day. Across Canada and the world social justice and progressive activists are readying themselves to celebrate solidarity in art, music, words, ideas, and actions. Over the last year or so, the Occupy movement has been one of the largest and most visible actions for solidarity across the globe. In this episode of rabble radio, we thought we'd bring together art and activism by turning the show over to audio artist Sarah Boothroyd. Over the last year or more, Boothroyd has brought together sound, music, and action. It has all wound up in a 28-minute audio piece called rabble rousers. Boothroyd's audio work has been featured by broadcasters, festivals and galleries in over a dozen countries and we're happy to host it at rabble.ca as well. Rabble rousers touches on ethics, justice, democracy, global citizenship, and art. It also explores the notion of protest as a spontaneous installation of improvised music in public space.  It features field recordings from protests around the globe, including many from the occupy movement. Rabble rousers was supported by the Ontario Arts Council. All music is licensed under creative commons licenses. Featured artists included Random Coil, Pleq, Papercutz, Carlos Lemosh, Marcus Fischer, Upsteria, Erstlaub, Aurastore, Aos Crowley(Matt Dean), Pocka (Brad Mitchell), Mattias Ksipert and the Prelinger Archives.
