Pastors Don and Ethel Rucker both heard the voice of God when they first laid eyes on each other. Meeting in a church — she was there because church was always her "safe haven" and he was there because he wanted to "appease" his sister — the word reached them as a whisper in their hearts acknowledging they had met their life partner. It wasn't long afterward that they married. But even though they were destined for each other, they admit the first three years of marriage were lousy."I had no positive role models on how to submit to men, how to respect them, how to honor them. What was that?" Pastor Ethel said."I didn't have any tools. And neither did he because his father walked away as well."But the glue they shared was commitment and faith."The turning point for us was that we realized this is not God's will. He did not bring us together for us to be miserable," Don said. The two set out investigating what they needed to build a strong marriage, and with God's help, developed 10 principles that laid the foundation for their union."If you look at your marriage as a business, you have towork that thing. That means there's got to be policies ... to govern that relationship," Don said. "It can failproof your relationship, the principles that God gave us."Now, 41 years married, Ethel and Don teach these principles in couples' workshops. They have also written a book about their journey, From Misery to Marital Bliss. That's not all they achieved. Through a program called "Reach One, Teach One, and Grow One," they are building on God's messages of transformation. In 2014, they founded the Christian Development Center in Montclair, California, and now feed and clothe 600 families monthly. They conductparenting and other educational classes and collaborate with local businesses to serve the greater San Bernadino County. They've even started down the path of investment to build affordable housing that can serve neighbors based ontheir income levels, rather than market value."(God) said, 'You will always have the poor. You will not always have me.' So, from Ethel and our perspective, what we're doing in the community is really doing what He would be doing if He was here," Don said.I met Ethel and Don through Kyle Wilson's Inner Circle group, and I am struck by their ministry and their amazing accomplishments. I do believe they are transforming behaviors and outcomes in the lives of many, helping to build the kingdom of God. You can learn more about them on their website, Facebook and Instagram. CEO and culture creator Meredith Monday Schwartz is passionate about investing in her employees and building a work environment that feels like family. At her wedding venue company, Here Comes the Guide, she works tirelessly to not only hire the best people for her teams but to create a sense of equality amongst them. According to Meredith, the value of an employee is not measured by how much time they spend working. Through clearly communicated key performance indicators, the leadership team at Here Comes the Guide can easily track an individual's growth and productivity. With a combination of trust and verification, leadership empowers employees to function at their highest capacity. Other core values Meredith has built at her female-owned and operated company include investing in the sisterhood, putting relationships before sales, prioritizing work/life balance, and practicing fearless authenticity, especially during conflict. In order to keep drama at bay, she encourages open and honest communication directly with those involved. Through culture-building activities such as company retreats, book clubs, and small group goal setting, she is able to foster a sense of connectivity even though everyone works remotely. By implementing a more human-centered approach, Meredith is building a company that she hopes will be around long after she is gone. Meredith Monday Schwartz began her career at the women-powered wedding venue company Here Comes the Guide in 1997 as their first employee; now she's the CEO. Before onboarding with the company, she was working in a highly stressful environment at a Top 10 legal firm as a paralegal. Seeking more life/work balance, she joined the fledgling team where she put her problem solving skills to work. In the early days, she played every role and learned how to do all the jobs she would eventually hire people to do. Those years of experience helped her develop the empathy and business savvy required to be the strong leader she is today. Here Comes the Guide helps couples all across the country find the perfect wedding venue for them. Its business structure is an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, which provides employees with a certain percentage of shareholdings after they've worked with the company for one year. This structure creates a sense of buy-in for employees to help the company grow and increase in value. During the global shut down in 2020, possibly one of the greatest challenges for the wedding industry to date, Here Comes the Guide actually flourished. They focused on helping clients navigate the crisis, moved to a four-day work week, and adapted to meet the ever-changing needs of their clientele. Meredith attributes much of the company's success to their slow growth, grassroots approach that values the culture of the company over any quick profit plan. Main Topics How Meredith came to be a CEO (01:48) From paralegal work to a wedding venue start-up (04:15) The evolution of her role at Here Comes the Guide (08:35) Benefits of knowing how to do every job at the company (12:40) Systems and processing as a superpower (14:35) Employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) (17:00) How the company grew through the pandemic (19:50) Transitioning from print to virtual (24:20) The value of slow growth (28:40) Adopting a four-day work week (30:00) Episode Linkshttps://www.herecomestheguide.com Go to TheFridayHabit.com to find show notes for this episode. Can you believe it's been 10 years since we said "I do"? To celebrate our milestone marriage anniversary, we decided to skip the traditional gifts and indulge in a scrumptious dining experience at the renowned Columbia restaurant in Tampa. Join us as we reminisce about our amazing dinner and share our thoughts on the importance of experiences over tangible gifts, especially in a world where commercialization seems to be taking over the true essence of holidays and anniversaries. During our culinary adventure, we were blown away by not only the delicious food - grouper, steak, devil crab croquettes, and paella - but also the rich history and sheer size of the Columbia restaurant. Our fantastic server, Christophe, regaled us with family stories connected to the restaurant and the local cigar rolling factory in Ybor. Plus, you won't believe the high-tech algorithm-based system the restaurant uses to ensure timely preparation of their famous paella! As we reflect on a decade of wedded bliss, we dive into the crucial elements that have kept our bond strong: communication, respect, and a healthy dose of laughter. We also tackle the challenges technology poses to modern marriages, such as cell phone addiction and the impact of social media on relationships. So grab a cup of coffee (or a glass of wine) and join us as we explore the keys to a successful marriage and reminisce about our journey together over the past 10 years. In this psalm, the sons of Korah portray the beauty of the marriage covenant in all its grandeur. In its purest essence, this psalm is designed to teach us what the ideal portrait of a marriage looks like. It highlights the nature and role of a godly husband and his wife, and it calls us to look upon marriage, not only as a wonderful gift from God-but a gift that is to be exercised with great purpose and sobriety. But it is also a gift to be delighted in by others. When a marriage functions as it should, it is a thing of profound beauty to behold to all who see it. The reason for this is simple- witnesses to a godly marriage truly see it as an image of the gospel. In verses 10-17 then, we examine the portrait of the queen.
