When the iconic Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed around 1:30am on Tuesday, March 26, eight men who were working on the bridge at the time were plunged into the cold waters of the Patapsco River. Two of those men were recovered alive, six were not. As TRNN previously reported, all existing evidence points to the fact that these workers—who were working for a non-union contractor, Brawner Builders, filling potholes on the bridge—did not receive any warning from emergency dispatch that the shipping vessel Dali was about to plow into the bridge. As Baltimore reels from the shock of the bridge collapse, as investigations begin into the root causes of the accident, and as we begin to take stock of the seismic economic and potential environmental impacts that this catastrophic accident will have, the families of the six workers who died are mourning an incalculable loss. As Clara Longo de Frietas writes at The Baltimore Banner, “All of the men confirmed or presumed to be dead had emigrated from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador or Mexico. They were Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35; Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26; Miguel Luna, 49; Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval, 38; Jose Mynor Lopez, 35; and one as-yet-unnamed man… All of them came to Baltimore for a better life.” Amidst this tragedy, volunteers, community organizers, immigrant and Latino/Latine justice organizations, businesses, and more have responded with tireless efforts to support the families of the deceased workers, and to provide support for Baltimore's Latino/Latine and immigrant communities in general. In this special bilingual podcast, recorded in Spanish and English at El Taquito Mexicano restaurant in Fells Point, TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez sits down with a panel of community and immigrant justice organizers and members of Baltimore's Latino/Latine community to discuss those efforts, what we know about the men who were working on that bridge, and what this tragedy tells us about the plight of immigrant workers in Baltimore and around the US. Panelists include: Ricardo Ortiz, vice president of the Centro de Apoyo Para la Superación del Inmigrante (CAPSI); Susana Barrios, vice president of the Latino Racial Justice Circle; Carlos Crespo, who volunteers at CAPSI; Lucia Islas, president of Comité Latino de Baltimore; Norma Martinez, a high-school student in Baltimore, born in Honduras (and Max's foster daughter); Claudia, co-owner of El Taquito Mexicano; Victor, co-owner of El Taquito Mexicano. Wherever you are, whoever you're with, the winter holiday season often augurs a refreshing drink in hand. But alcohol is not an indispensable ingredient for a good time. Many Americans, around 1 in 3 according to Gallup polling, totally abstain from alcohol. So what are your options if you are looking for something to drink that is more sophisticated than a soda but less potent than the holiday eggnog. We ask Darryl Collins, owner of Hopscotch Zero-Proof Bottle Shop in Fells Point. Collins was profiled by Phillip Muriel in the Baltimore Beat in November. His store sells non-alcoholic beverages of all shapes and sizes. Later in the show, Joey Breeden and Rani Singh join us in-studio to mix mocktails. A controversy is growing over equipment that BGE wants to install around homes throughout Baltimore City that will regulate natural gas pressure. The equipment, which the company has already installed at homes in several Baltimore neighborhoods, is, according to BGE, necessary for safety. In a lawsuit filed against the company, hundreds of area residents disagree. A temporary restraining order halting further installation of this equipment issued in Baltimore City Circuit court has been extended for two more months. We've invited two city residents from different neighborhoods who oppose the installation of this equipment. We also invited BGE to send a representative to speak to the residents' concerns. The company responded through a spokesperson that they cannot comment on pending litigation. Brief summary of episode:Jack O'Connell has been an avid music lover since he was in diapers and was burning mixes at age 7, ripping a personal Beach Boys hits anthology. He has been listening constantly since. From hearing Fastball's All the Pain Money Can Buy on cassette in the car to elementary school, to The Spy Who Shagged Me soundtrack on the Walkman, he discovered music early and was hooked. Along the way he endured the zeitgeist of Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC, dancing along to their performances at Madison Square Garden on VHS. Eventually his babysitter introduced him to the local alternative rock station–99.1 WHFS (R.I.P.)–where he could finally hear pop-punk icons like Blink-182 and Good Charlotte, Jack's first exposure to the combination of raw rock and catchy pop. Blink also influenced him toward the drums. During a drive past the Baltimore School for Drumming while listening to Enema of the State at age 10, Travis Barker unwittingly set events in motion that led Jack toward devotion to the kit. During his eight years of private drum lessons with virtuoso and now long-time friend John Coale, Jack practiced his craft with Kidz Rock bands at The Music Workshop, instructed by singer/guitarist Fred Moss in the ways of performing and band dynamics. Eventually he played drums with his middle school's jazz ensemble, taking him out of his head-bashing comfort zone and into more complex and elegant styles. Since playing in liturgical and theatre bands in high school, he has played countless shows at venues in and around Baltimore, as well as major cities around the east coast on tour with surf rockers Trunkweed, honing an understanding for the politics of booking and the challenges of creating good live sound. Jack attended a summer program on music industry at Drexel University, which cemented his decision to attend Towson University. While working on his audio degree, doing audio/visual work for Towson event services, and teaching drum lessons from home, he began buying recording gear, building a studio, and producing on his own. Jack played virtually every venue in Baltimore and published a full-length record, Anything But Ordinary, which Jack co-wrote and produced, with his former band, pop-rockers The Chance.Jack has more recently been making music with his brother, Danny, as Backyard Games, and is currently working on their first full-length album, all recorded and produced at O'Connell Sound. He also periodically plays around Fells Point on the weekends playing cover gigs. The Truth In This ArtThe Truth In This Art is a podcast interview series supporting vibrancy and development of Baltimore & beyond's arts and culture. In his new book, Stop the Road: Stories from the Trenches of Baltimore's Road Wars, retired city planner E. Evans Paull tells the story of transportation plans that were overtly racist, and disastrously short-sighted. Had it not been for the tenacious efforts of neighborhood activists, some of Baltimore's most cherished and beloved historic neighborhoods would be very different places today. Those activists saved places like Fells Point, the Inner Harbor and Canton. Other, mostly Black neighborhoods didn't survive the onslaught of highways intended to accommodate white suburbanites. Places like Rosemont on the West Side were destroyed. More than 1,500 residents were displaced. Dozens of businesses, even a school were eliminated in the service of a stretch of highway that was begun, but eventually halted after years of organized opposition. The stories of the infamous Highway to Nowhere and the planned East-West Expressway are chronicled in Stop the Road. Author E. Evans Paull joins Tom today in Studio A… Klaus Philipsen, an urban planner, community activist and president of the Baltimore architectural firm ArchPlan, Inc., is the author of Baltimore: Reinventing an Industrial Legacy City. He joins us to talk about some of the lessons that can be learned from the mistakes of the past. Klaus Philipsen is with us in Studio A as well. ________________________________________________ Evans Paull discusses Stop the Road and signs copies of his book tonight (Thursday, Dec. 8) from 7-8:30pm at Snug Books in Baltimore. ABOUT Fells Point Cultivated CreationsCultivated Creations started as a house plant hobby gone wild. Founder Mike Holcomb always enjoyed gardening and became enraptured by the science of living terrariums, getting crafty with plants and putting them in his empty window storefront. One day the window ran out of space and we realized we could share these creations with the community that loved seeing them from afar. Partnering with local artist Alexander Madaus, they set out to create a space for the community to grow with the greenery. Thus, Cultivated Creations was born. We love that this is a way to bring joy to others and brighten up the community and we want to continue to grow and help others learn how to grow both plants and their spirits each day.To find more amazing stories from the artist and entrepreneurial scenes in & around Baltimore, check out my episode directory.Mentioned in this episode:Cultivated Creations' WebsiteSubscribe on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify, or listen on my website, follow on Instagram (where I am most active), like on Facebook, or email mtrthenetwork@gmail.com!Be sure to check out our other podcasts:Mastermind Team's Robcast - Mastermind Team's Robcast is an irreverent and hilarious podcast covering all things pop culture and weird news. "When we took over it was a nice I guess disco. It was just a poor excuse for a disco I guess but that's what it was. But I was always into music. I loved music and that's what I wanted to do. So I started booking bands and you know, we went from local bands to regional bands to everybody. From Smashing Pumpkins to David Cassidy," said Ron Furman, owner and founder of Max's Tap House. Ron and his family are originally from Baltimore and at the age of twelve got into the Max's business. From taking artifacts from historic buildings and repurposing them for his facility, Max's Tap House has a unique character and a top place to have a good time in the heart of Baltimore."If we can find use from something we used it. If you look at the first floor in the back that's all bowling alley that came out of the Old Southway Bowling Alley in Federal Hill. The second floor, the floor, and the walls all came out of the Secrets Distillery, the warehouse that was over in Dundalk before they tore it down.
