The reality is remarkably different. America's small towns are not all the same. Yes, some are struggling, but many more are working together and utilizing the innovation and skills of their people to thrive. Stay tuned for a three-part series on rural innovation inspired by the Smithsonian's traveling exhibition Spark! Places of Innovation. Andy Wilkins, business consultant; Honorary Visiting Fellow at Bayes Business School; and co-founder of consultancy Perspectiv, discusses creativity in business with Professor Neil Maiden. The conversation covers a wide range of issues and considers how ten years ago, industrial focus was on process improvements, which has now given way to the leadership of complexity, establishing cultures, and the delusion of self-awareness. The current business environment is increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) and this podcast offers insights from two experienced guides in business and creativity. Text Hawk to 66866 to become part of "Mindful Monday." Join 10's of thousands of your fellow learning leaders and receive a carefully curated email from me each Monday morning to help you start your week off right... Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Twitter/IG: @RyanHawk12 https://twitter.com/RyanHawk12 Seth Godin is the author of 20 international bestsellers that have changed the way people think about marketing, leadership, and work. His blog (which you can find by typing "seth" into Google) is the most viewed marketing blog in the world. Some of my favorite books of his are… Tribes, Linchpin, Purple Cow, and most recently The Song of Significance. Notes: Hiring Leaders — when deciding who to hire for a leadership role: look at the careers of the people who have worked for them. And look at the careers of the people they've led. Leaders aren't managers with fancy titles. Leaders are planting the seeds for generations of impact to come. Let's get real or let's not play. Tension is what we seek. It's important to show up early. Frederick Taylor met Henry Ford and management was created. Study bees - They leave their home and have 72 hours to find their next one. Matt Mullenweg (Automatic CEO) - "Create the conditions for forward motion." To create the environment for the people they're leading to flourish. How are you intentionally creating the environment for the people you're leading to do their best work? Management doesn't just exist. It was invented. When you race to the bottom, You see people as resources, not as people. (I don't like the term human capital management) When Paul Orfalea was building kinkos (which he later sold to fed ex for $2B), he said his best technique for growing the business was simple. He would walk into their stores and ask someone there to tell him about an innovation they've recently made. And then he'd tell all the other stores about it… “Real value is no longer created by traditional measures of productivity. It's created by personal interactions, innovation, creative solutions, resilience, and the power of speed.”

In this episode of No Walls, Taylor and Preston discuss what makes Marvel successful, as well as what it looks like to add creativity to others' innovations.
Are Creativity and Innovation the Same Thing? Creativity and innovation are often used interchangeably. In reality, they are more like two sides of the same coin. When put together, they have different functions that produce new products and ways of thinking. Understanding the difference and how they work together gives you an edge on your business and personal goals. You have to have both to make your mark on the world. How Creativity and Innovation Differ from (and Support) Each Other You might think you know how to be creative. You may even consider that being creative is to be innovative. That's not quite the case. Creativity can exist without innovation. But innovation is nonexistent without creativity. When you understand the difference between the two and how they can be used together, the sky is the limit: Creativity Is a Characteristic: Think about all of the ideas you come up with – widget to solve a customer problem or the ending to the novel you are writing. That's being creative. It's the generation of new ideas, alternatives, possibilities, and solutions. It's using your imagination. Innovation Is Putting Ideas into Practice: All of those ideas remain on paper without innovation. That widget goes from an idea to testing to the marketplace through innovation. It's taking creative ideas and putting them into action. Other Ways to Think of Creativity and Innovation: Creativity often happens in a brainstorming session; however, it remains in a creativity status unless an idea is implemented. You can measure innovation by the product or service produced. You cannot measure creativity. Another way to look at both is to see creativity as a front-end process that must happen before innovation can. Innovation takes risks; creativity does not. You Need Both to Prosper: Today's world seeks continual upgrades and new products or services. That means a company or entrepreneur needs to be innovative. You cannot implement a new idea if you don't first generate the idea. That means you must be continually working on ideas. You cannot achieve success without innovation, and innovation requires creativity. Innovation takes your ideas, considers how to bring them into reality, tests them, and then presents them to the world. Without creative thinking, though, your innovation will fall flat. Ensure you stay relevant in the market by embracing both creativity and innovation. Encourage creative thinking with your colleagues and team members. Then put the ideas into practice through innovative techniques.

What if you were unconscious for 6 weeks due to a severe battle with Covid? How would that experience shape your faith, knowing that prayers and a miracle saved your life? How would that change your relationship with your family, God, and life itself? What if you also happened to be the president of a large philanthropic organization in the midst of major projects that you felt were inspired by God? Joining me on the show to talk about all of that is Jason Shanks, President of Our Sunday Visitor Institute. We kind of have two conversations at once in this interview. We talk about the OSV Challenge, why the Church needs innovators, and how to embrace your creative side (even if you're not an artist). And we also dive into Jason's near-death experience, his recovery, and what that experience taught him about life, reality, and valuing the ordinary. You're going to love toady's episode! Wouldn't it be fantastic if … …everyone in business felt inspired, confident and unapologetic enough to think independently, create more and regurgitate less? …people trusted in themselves and listened to their own intuition? …they consulted others, took on board different perspectives, and then came to their own conclusions, thinking creatively AND critically? Never before have we had so much access to such a huge diversity of opinion, data, information, and so many opportunities to connect with and follow people from around the world. In some ways, we are in a wonderful golden age of shared thought and enlightenment because of all the online conversation and connections. But is all that volume creating a reduction in the impact for us as innovators and consumers of content? There's a lot of noise out there, a lot of copying, as well as a myriad of insights and wisdom. How might we find strategies to cut through the noise and find the gems that help us, as innovators, to create, communicate and consume for more meaningful outcomes? I'd love you to join me for this show where I'll be exploring the theme of thought-leadership and innovation. Let me know what you think. Contribute to the debate. Let's see what insights and ideas we can co-create in the moment. Looking forward to collaborating with you.
Too many interruptions are taking us away from what truly matters. We also see leaders afraid to listen. And this blocks the dynamics of listening, preventing a decision to trickle down to the lower echelons of the organization. Sense-making is a process that uses listening as a tool to foster learning that encompasses innovation, creativity, and transformation. It supports all voices being heard and leads to successful business outcomes while having positive societal impact and a sense of belonging. Dr. Gemma Jiang is the founding director of the Organizational Innovation Lab at the University of Pittsburgh. As a complexity leadership scholar and practitioner, Gemma is committed to bridging the "knowing-doing" gap by building capacity for addressing complex social challenges. She is involved in a diverse set of projects, including a National Science Foundation-funded convergence research project on circular economy and two Pittsburgh locally funded projects: the Pitt u.lab hub and the Adaptive Space. In this episode, Gemma shares how projects she started, like, 'Let's do lunch' and 'Ideation Expo', set the tone for sense-making in its true meaning. Voices from the bottom are heard and listened to; fear barriers are broken, their concerns and aspirations taken into consideration. A picture of bottom-up and top-down interaction through listening can create an environment of learning and belonging. "Listening engenders belonging. Learning and belonging mutually reinforce each other." - Gemma Jiang Listen IN Notes: 00:01 - One of the key tools in sense-making: listening to each other and listening to the environment, making sense of it, and making adaptive changes based on what you hear. 02:35 - Relational measures and ecosystem awareness: how individuals work together with fellow team members. 06:05 - How you make sense of the ecosystem: you develop your relationship with the community you're a part of no matter how small or big. 08:17 - Understanding a bigger system through giving and receiving. Speaking through dialogues. 10:24 - Why everybody is so busy: there is not enough sense-making. 13:02 - An initiative she started called 'Let's do Lunch' -- a very bottom-up approach to listening. 17:36 - What is this 'Ideation Expo' she created -- where the bottom-up dynamic meets the top-down dynamics. 21:14 - Turning fear into taking action 24:27 - Do you listen to the fear, or do you listen to one's future highest potential? 25:06 - Where she experienced the power of listening: Asian culture gives more emphasis on listening versus the western culture 27:24 - The importance of sense-making where once you start to see things differently, the solution surfaces. 31:43 - Questions she asks in her research: How might organizations create enabling conditions to center listening and questioning? 32:20 - Where this question led her: Learning is only part of the story. The other part of the story is belonging. 36:20 - Listen to your people, they might have the answer. 37:05 - How can leaders listen to their people? 40:05 - Why are leaders afraid to listen? 42:56 - What are adaptive spaces and how can they support organizations? 49:49 - What does adaptive spaces encompass other than the physical space? 55:39 - How is listening tied to gratitude? Key Takeaways: "I think people...are too busy with action-taking. And that action-taking...is almost like a group of arrows, shooting out and around at the same time. There's no coordination, and there's no coherence in it. And the arrows are canceling each other out...That's why everybody's so busy; you are busy canceling out each other's efforts." - Gemma Jiang "The mirroring back was absolutely amazing. It was like I became an owl; it's like I had a 360 view of the events. I was able to see perspectives and aspects of my challenge that I would never be able to see with my own perspective." - Gemma Jiang "When everybody listens from their perspective, and when they mirror that back, it helps you to see your situation differently. It also helps you to see where the listener comes from. It's like all of a sudden multiple lightbulbs came out. I came to know myself better, my situation better, and also I came to know my listeners better." - Gemma Jiang "If you have a question, listen to your people; they might have the answer." - Gemma Jiang "A lot of times, we have this illusion that if you are a leader, you have a lot of space. But I think the reality, especially in more hierarchical organizations, it's totally opposite. The higher you are in the hierarchy, the less room you have to be creative. What's more, the system demands you to carry on the agenda of the system." - Gemma Jiang "Adaptive space stands in between the bottom-up dynamic, which we call adaptive leadership, and top-down dynamic, which we call administrative leadership. And adaptive space stands right in between these two and connects them." - Gemma Jiang "I often tie listening with gratitude. Because it's a rare connection. It's a weird connection. But, in my mind, it makes sense because they are both in a state of receivership." - Gemma Jiang "Organizational transformation is grounded in individual transformation. One message is probably to investigate and examine personal relationships with listening, and then bring those new insights into organizations and into any relationship that we are part of, what a transformative effect it has." - Gemma Jiang Notes/Mentions: Theory U by Otto Scharmer: https://www.ottoscharmer.com/sites/default/files/Witten_Mindful_Leadership_h.pdf Otto Scharmer: https://www.ottoscharmer.com/ Connect with Gemma Jiang: LinkedIn Connect with Raquel Ark: www.listeningalchemy.com Mobile: + 491732340722 contact@listeningalchemy.com LinkedIn

So really, it WAS the perfect time to establish a suburban art gallery! So what does it take to set up a creative space in the middle of a pandemic? And, to make it a success? With a background as teacher, artist and creative, Melony Smirniotis knows how creativity can both foster innovation and support the community. As she states, “The art making process nourishes, challenges, provokes, humbles and provides grounding and perspective” Coupled with a desire to provide artists with a space to shine, Melony recognised the potential of the Epping community and the resilience of it’s artists to create a space in which the whole community could benefit, and prosper. Today, she hopes to help other businesses to learn from her experience, innovation and creative success. Why build an Art gallery in North Epping? How did you recognise the potential for what is essentially quite a suburban landscape? How did you research the area to create an artistic space that would be welcomed into the local community? What part do you think local, community based How do you choose Artist's to exhibit and also to teach workshops? What does it take to recognise artistic talent in others, what background do you need? Subscribe to Social Business Engine Apple Podcasts |Stitcher |Google Play On this episode, you’re going to meet Duncan Wardle. Duncan spent 30 years at arguably the best-known brand in the world - Disney. In his last role he was a global executive in charge of something most companies don’t even identify as a function in the business. That function is innovation. As Vice President of Innovation & Creativity it was his job to invent new ways to generate revenue. We think of innovation as something that companies DO, but in reality, it’s the people in those companies who innovate. The problem is most people aren’t given the time OR the tools to innovate. After 30 years in a global corporate brand, Duncan has started his own company - ID8&INNOV8 - where he travels the globe helping companies – many of which are household brand names – overcome the challenges associated with innovating. Duncan shares 4 tools that foster creativity and enable companies to innovate. Start with your end user’s greatest need List the rules of your challenge as quickly as you can Take one rule and ask “What if this rule didn't exist?” Imagine a world where that rule isn’t in effect These tools are applicable whether your company is B2C, B2B, or non-profit because they are universal principles. 4 Barriers To Creativity And Innovation In Most Organizations One of the most interesting things Duncan revealed during this conversation is that very few people say that they have their best ideas while they are at work. That means there’s a disconnect in the way companies are trying to encourage their team members to innovate - because they try to make it happen while the team is at work without addressing the reasons creativity is hampered. What is it about being at work that blocks creativity? Duncan says there are four common barriers to creativity and innovation in most organizations: A lack of time. Policies, procedures, processes, and more keep employees busy, not allowing much time for creativity Companies tend to have no common definition of creativity or innovation, so those working together have a hard time rowing in the same direction Companies tend to be risk averse instead of risk courageous, which causes them to miss the opportunity to be customer-centric Ideas tend to get stuck or killed as they move through the organization toward implementation Do you see any of these present in your workplace? The answer is not to get out of the office but to learn new ways of approaching the innovation process. Why We Need Design Thinking Tools To Help Us Innovate and Create Every human being is creative in some way, but we all struggle to believe it. That’s because from a very young age we’ve been told that there is a special group of people who are creative - and we’re likely not among them. Besides that, we’ve each built our own areas of experience and expertise. The strengths that come with expertise are predicated on the attainment of knowledge, facts, and certainty upon which we base our decisions and observations. That locks us into patterns and styles of thinking that are diametrically opposed to creativity. Design thinking tools enable us to turn problems or challenges into games that magically switch the brain to “What if?” mode rather than “It won’t work” mode. Duncan believes this kind of approach can help businesses and sales organizations discover new ways of serving customers. How To Use The Words “Yes, and” To Get Creativity And Innovation Going Many companies or teams organize “brainstorming” sessions to enable people to work toward innovative solutions together. The problem is that the work environment fosters a “stressed brain” condition that prohibits creativity. Duncan says there are a handful of design thinking tools that can be used to move the team out of that state. One of his favorites is this: Anytime a person raises an objection, someone on the team should respond with the phrase, “Yes, and…” That kind of response opens the door to possibilities rather than leaving the objection as a hard and fast obstacle that can’t be overcome. As a bonus outcome, using this approach causes most teams to experience the success as a team effort rather than the result of one person’s contribution. Duncan says this is an example of how being playful enables the brain to relax - which causes creativity to increase. Learn more about how to spark creativity and innovation in your company by listening to this conversation with Duncan Wardle. How Design Thinking Tools Can Be Applied Specifically To A B2B Context All through this conversation, Duncan insists that design thinking tools apply to a B2B context as well as any other. Bernie wanted to hear Duncan’s specific reasons behind that assertion and his answer was simple but powerful. He pointed out that many sales organizations or businesses have never physically gotten out of their controlled, comfortable environment to get into the shoes of their customer. That puts them at a disadvantage immediately because they don’t truly know their customer’s needs or their experience with the product or service they offer. Duncan says that if companies are unwilling to take that critical step, they may innovate but what they come up with won’t be relevant to their customers. Today I sit down with Andre Santos CEO of Nelo Kayaks one of the world largest and leading manufacturers of performance kayaks. While Nelo is a relatively new brand to the US market, on the world stage it has been highly regarded for over a decade as the leading innovator and pioneer in building the boats that own the Olympic podium. In 2016 Nelo boats won over 75% of the sprint kayak medals in Rio. While Nelo has built a few surfskis over the years, they got very serious about expanding into surfskis when they brought on Oscar Chalupsky as CEO of Nelo SURFSKI. Oscar has been working closely with Andre and the Nelo team applying their deep expertise in producing the fastest boats in the world, to very quickly launch an entire line-up of new and innovative surfskis. This is my first ever in person Podcast. Andre and I grabbed a quite space at the Douro Academy after the 510 Winter Cup race, to catch up and discuss all the latest and greatest happenings at Nelo. We cover a wide range of topics including: The launch of the 510 Cup, what it is about, why it was launched, and how it will serve as a catalyst to grow the sport of surfski paddling around the worldThe launch of the new Nelo Surfski line up including the 510, 520, yet to be released 550, 560, and the 600. Andre talks us through the thought process in creating this lineup, who each boat is targeted toward, and some of the unique innovations that went into the boatsNelo is well known for producing some of the coolest, wildest, and most outlandish graphics and paint jobs on the water. We talk about how this is embedded in their DNA and the creativity, passion, and pride that the Nelo team takes in building these boats that allows customers to express their individuality on the waterOf course the podcast wouldn’t be complete without the million dollar question, how is it working with Oscar Chalupsky? - I put Andre on the spot to tell the world what it's like trying to keep up with the energy, passion, and drive that Oscar brings to everything he does I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as I enjoyed my three days in Porto paddling the Nelo boats, touring the factory, touring the Douro Valley Wine Region, and of course soaking up every bit of wisdom I could from a great team of boat experts and paddlers.
