Ever wonder about the women who defied conventions by wearing the pants—quite literally? In this episode, comedy writer and actress Tracy Dawson highlight trailblazers throughout history who disguised themselves as men to gain access and opportunities denied them simply because they were women. The conversation delves into various stories from Tracy's book, Let Me Be Frank: A Book About Women Who Dressed Like Men To Do Shit They Weren't Supposed To Do, highlighting women like Rena "Rusty" Kanokogi, the mother of women's judo, and Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, the only woman to ever receive the Medal of Honor. Tracey emphasizes the transformative impact these women had on history, breaking barriers in sports, literature, and medicine. The discussion extends to the broader implications of gender roles and the ongoing challenges women face, and what can we learn from these women's audacious journeys. Some topics we cover include: Tracy's shocking encounter in the entertainment industry that fueled her passion for this topic Restrictions of gender, the struggle for equal rights, and the importance of women forging their paths Various women featured in the book, such Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to run the Boston Marathon, to Ellen Craft, who passed as a white plantation owner to escape slavery How the themes of survival, defiance against patriarchy, and the fight for freedom of movement resonate across different cultures and historical periods The transformative impact of these women's actions on history The relevance of these issues in today's world Transcription is available here Buy Let Me Be Frank: A Book About Women Who Dressed Like Men To Do Shit They Weren't Supposed To Do -- Become a Patron for access to bonus content and to support the podcast, or buy me a (metaphorical) coffee Follow us: Instagram | Twitter | Facebook | Tik Tok | Youtube | LinkedIn Subscribe to our newsletter for a weekly dose of all things WOMAN We need more women's stories in the world!. In this Women's History Month episode of Armchair Historians, Anne Marie talks to Wendy Rouse about the suffrage movement, specifically about the all but erased queer history of the movement. Wendy Rouse is a historian whose research focuses on the history of gender and sexuality in the Progressive Era. Her most recent book, Public Faces, Secret Lives: A Queer History of the Women's Suffrage Movement (NYU Press), challenges the heteronormative framing of the traditional narrative of the campaign for the vote. Her previous two books explored the history of women and children in the Progressive Era: The Children of Chinatown: Growing up Chinese American in San Francisco, 1850 to 1920 (UNC Press) and Her Own Hero: The Origins of the Women's Self-Defense Movement (NYU Press). Batter Up! Hear that Call! The time has come! For one and all! To play ball! Gosh A League of their Own is just... It's just the best movie. Hi Weirdos, welcome to another HERSTORY lesson! This is week two of women throughout history that you should know! But probably don't... womp womp. This week our main focus is Betty Pack the WWII MI6 spy who foiled the Nazis, ensured that the Allied forces made safe passage into Hitler's territories, and even helped crack the enigma machine and she did it all with her BODY! That's right, Pack was a SNACK and she did what we see men do in film and television all the time-- but are we taught about her in history class? No. Because what she didn't isn't "lady-like." But she is a queen, she's my hero, and I can't wait for you to meet her! We're also going to sing our praises for Princess Diana, Sybil Ludington, Barbara Lee, Josephine Butler, Mary Edwards Walker, and NATURALLY Geena Davis and the entire cast and crew of A League of Their Own. This episode is FULL of women we adore... and one woman we just hate. Stay tuned to the very end to find out who that is. Warning: This episode contains foul language, descriptions of sexual acts, and brief mentions of HIV/AIDS, abusive relationships, and Nazis

A Broad is a woman who lives by her own rules. Broads You Should Know is the podcast about the Broads who helped shape our world. This week, Sam brings us the story of a woman who received a Medal of Honor for her work during the US Civil War: Mary Edwards Walker!Born to "free thinking" parents in Upstate New York, Mary was taught to question gender roles from a very early age. She became active in a quest to make it socially acceptable for women to wear slacks instead of dresses, both for patriarchal and hygienic reasons. She went on to become a surgeon, and when the Civil War broke out in 1861, she volunteered her services to the Union army. As a female, she was rejected from serving, but was "permitted" to be an unpaid volunteer. There's a lot more to the story, so check out the episode to hear the riveting tale of Mary Edwards Walker! Broads You Should Know is Hosted by Sam Eggers, Sara Gorsky, & Justin Xavier. This week, Kelley and Emily wine about some forward-thinking ladies over a bottle of Seven Daughters Moscato (because life is screwed up!) First, Emily digs into the dark side of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution and one of the many women it left out- suffragette Dr. Mabel Ping-Hua Lee. Then, Kelley tells the story of Dr. Mary Edwards Walker whose progressive upbringing made her a strong, independent, pants-wearing badass who was too woke for nearly everyone! Keith Negley (@keithnegley) is the author/illustrator of MARY WEARS WHAT SHE WANTS. The story follows a young Mary Edwards Walker, determined to swap the confining, uncomfortable dress expected of her and other girls and women for a more sensible pair of pants. Keith shares that the idea grew from media coverage of transgender individuals being restricted access to bathrooms, as well as a podcast episode of The Memory Palace regarding the norm-defying life of Mary Walker. All in all it is a story of a woman who, even as a girl, enjoyed the opportunity to prove someone wrong by enacting change in her surroundings.
